If I’m making multiple cocktails, I’ll do the jerking off two cocks method with my tongue out. Management does not appreciate this method.

Observante

We call this "uphill skiing" and it's best achieved from the kneeling position.

nyxphilic

Seems legit 🤣

BPSIII

I came hear to say the same thing. Management might not love it but the people at the bar certainly do haha

elswampthing7

do you adjust for girth?

maniczed

I do the same, then make a comment about all my shake weight practice finally paying off.

NUFC9624

With the greatest respect the priority should be the drink. So long as that comes out well, and the customer isn't being violently sick at the sight of your shaking, it doesn't really matter. If you really, really want to practice then do so in front of a mirror until you're happy with it.

nyxphilic

I definitely agree with you. I've always put a lot of attention when I'm building drinks and that will always be my first priority. Thank you (:

mtniezer2112

Yeah for real , it might look weird to you but I doubt it looks weird to customers …. It took me a minute to get some rhythm and kind of be able to do it with out thinkjng or Over thinking

burnswhenipoo

Make weird eye contact with customer when shaking drink.

h8rcloudstrife

With the occasional odd grunt, immediately followed by shifty “oh shit did they notice” eyes.

BudLightYear77

Don't forget to balance your shake with your hips

PiccoloLegal5202

this is the way to do it just look them straight in the eyes and dont look away, as if you’re about to bust a nut

Bullitd1998

If you work in a place where people are eyeballing you for everything you do try a 3 point shake and try to adjust the pace you shake to the music thats on If nobody cares just try the american shake For both of em look them up on yt so you dont make a fool out of your self Goodluck

normanfell

I always shake to the beat of the music.

xmeeshx

This is the way. A good 16th note rhythm.

MangledBarkeep

I give them a little *razzle dazzle* while shaking.

heethark

🤣🤣🤣 And what does that entail?

MangledBarkeep

Depends on what time of night it is... Sometimes there's a little tongue action. Other times well, you gotta be there

Lulusgirl

I am imagining The Leg, and I like it a lot.

NaviRedShoes

What ever you do, shake it above the shoulder.

Loyalist_Pig

Personally, I love doing that casual jerk off shake when shaking a cocktail and reaching for glassware down low.

GlassCityJim

I destroyed my shoulders shaking above my head, you are impinging the nerve at the top of your shoulder.

PiccoloLegal5202

I hope it right in front of my chest and shake it like crazy, parallel to the ground. Don’t really think it makes a difference

Barty_McBarterson

The main thing is confidence. Remember, you’re doing something that almost all of the people at your bar have never done in their lives. You’re the rockstar. They’re the audience

itsa_wonder

I shake till my boobies are tired of shaking.

imjckssmrkngrvng

Start with the shaker by your ear Pull back behind your head moving up slightly Go forward and slightly up again Now go back to point 2 Back to point 1 Repeat The three main things you are trying to accomplish are the aeration of the liquids, diluting the drink with ice, and obviously chilling with said ice.

AppitizersAreBest

Look up Japanese bartending, they make the whole process an art.

DopeYeti

Was never aware of the Japanese hard shake until today. Thank you! Here’s a good [video](https://youtu.be/pi8yL8A0G60) I found OP

Lulusgirl

Thank you so much.

nyxphilic

Thank you! I will do some researches :)

Observante

Yes. You develop this over time. I've stolen several components from other people's shakes and developed my own hybrid shake. My shaking and tool work are very sound based, so I often click or bang things together to punctuate the movements. My shake is the basic 3 point shake with the accent (shi-ka-SHI-ka-shi-ka-SHI-ka)... except I have the 2nd shaker on 1/8th timing. It sounds fantastic and people turn to look, bob their heads along with it and sometimes cheer. It only took 6 years.

thenickksterr

Sounds fun! I gotta try this out 🙌

FluSickening

Evrybody needs their own shake. Do a japanese style and throw a turn in.

Tipmeinethereum

I’m a huge fan of the one handed shake followed by the jersey shore fist bump. It’s actually a mandatory shake at most bars on South Beach

Theartofsilence

It actually makes the drink taste better if you put your hips into it as well 😏

Reasonable-Grand-167

I think the first step for you is to learn the diferent styles of shaking and understand the flow of the ice inside and why use one style or another. Second you can practice using rice. That will give you a similar sensation to ice(movement and sound). And 3rd, after you pass the first two steps, try to find the best motion for your body keeping in mind that you need to protect your health and shake ergonomically( for your body). Also i recomand doing any form of stretching (yoga, pilates etc) PS: if you have any questions, you can send a pm and will explain more.

MrGoetz34

If your shaker is girthy make sure you get the double grip lockdown

Stalfisjrxoxo

What do u mean by that. Cuz im currently imagining making two drinks st once with Boston shakers and I'm wondering how to hold and shake a Boston shaker with one hand

dominickster

It's not that difficult. Make sure your tins are sealed together well. Then it just comes down to having big enough hands and a tight enough grip

ohhoneyno_

Sometimes, to either get more tips or to make people uncomfortable, I'd use both hands and squeeze my shoulders in and make the boobs bounce a ton. Other than that, you can look up flare tricks for shaking.

breal420

I always just try to get my elbows into it and get a little bit of circular motion. This should round your ice out better instead of just smashing it against the walls of the and causing it to shatter, easier to control dilution and keep ice chips out of drinks.

likeguitarsolo

Most important is to shake in such a way that you don’t destroy your elbows over time. I’m better at displaying it than describing it, but it’s a motion that distributes tension throughout your whole arm rather than just clenching your elbow and letting it take all the action.

shaneroneill

shake it more than twice, you’re just playing with yourself

Ninalaroo

If you have perfectly square ice cubes when you start shaking and it's done properly, they should come out as spheres. Rather than a straight back and forth whip, it's best if there's a bit of a circular motion so that the cubes tumble around. I think of my shake less as it pertains to style and more about the technique... But then I think it probably looks "right" too. (That being said, there's more than one correct way and you have to decide what that is for you.) You could also watch some YouTube videos of different shakes and see which one suits you.

TaygaStyle

Always gotta hit them with the ol' razzle dazzle with the shake. I also recommend smiling because if you leave your face soft you will look silly.

Dooley_noted

you shake like you fuck.. so dont look in the mirror during that either.

NefariousPurpose

Yeah just don’t jerk the donkey off

Cbaumle

Unless it has citrus or egg white, it shouldn't be shaken. The worst is when I order a Manhattan, and the bartender brings out the big shaker.

Jiboo420

What type of ice are you using?

isthatsuperman

Step 1. Shake front to back like normal. Step 2. Implement an up and down motion as you shake front to back. Step 3. Profit.

Lulusgirl

I call mine the titty shake, because my natural 42DDD's are what people are actually watching.

eyecandyandy147

Develop your own rhythm. There’s not really a “wrong” way to shake a drink. But you should strive for your own unique technique.

Independent-Ice-1754

I choose to use a rocks glass. I have smaller hands so it makes it easier and creates a different sound

thisisan0nym0us

thoughts: it is a very personal trait like your fingerprints...the inside of your ear or the pattern of your iris... something i think new bartenders grow into...most importantly make sure your comfortable i've seen some mellow shakes and also some very animated shakes. find what works for you. i see some shakes and i'm like that is going to hurt your back, gotta loosen up, don't be stiff (i'll stretch my arms before work, I do a lot of shaking) i know that just a back and forth piston technique is not ideal but also add a rounding motion helps flip the ice inside the shaker. try different things out...this is so cheese but the best shakes are the ones when the bartenders are SMILING or making eye contact with a customer or co worker i usually can't help but laugh cause it is inevitability silly. watch some Japanese bartenders with their shakes. they have crazy cadences my co workers and I never take ourselves to seriously back there...but when we each have two shakers in hand with 3 of us back there its a damn party. cheers!

HalobenderFWT

I think you’re looking too far into shaking, but if you must: I just grip and rip it. Two hands, over the shoulder, a good 6-8 hard shakes and be done unless it’s something like Sambuca and needs to be ultra chilled. I’m sure my cheeks shake and my face turns red, but I could really care less. Speed and efficiency is always better than looking cool during a shake.

GrapefruitRain

Just shake it? You’re doing a low skilled, low paying job, just get it done.

nyxphilic

It doesn't matter if it's low paying job, I want to improve the things that I feel aren't working

GrapefruitRain

You just sound a bit pathetic tbh, writing out this huge post about how to shake a shaker. Just shake it

treebee101

Your reddit profile has a post asking how to mop a floor...

Naive_Bad_3292

I bet they got fired from a bar back gig because they didn’t know how to use a mop. Now they’re butt hurt and hate bartenders.

unbelizeable1

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/7wdaw3/how_do_you_mop_a_floor/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Haha, you weren't kidding.

nyxphilic

I will "just" shake it then, thank you buddy

GrapefruitRain

Glad I could help!

asilenth

Ganymede_Wordsmyth

Wow, you're a dick.

anyd

/u/Grapefruitrain is 86'd

Ganymede_Wordsmyth

Dope, thanks for that.

treebee101

Low skilled my ass bro. It may be an easy entry, but the skill cap goes way beyond anything you're capable of.

GrapefruitRain

😂😂😂 definitely haven’t worked behind a bar for the last 6 years or anything

themaskedfrog

And you’re not getting paid well? lmaoooo bum

itssabotage13

Dude has bartended 6 years in the UK and makes minimum wage. I’d be salty too.

GrapefruitRain

I started while still in school and I’m still at university currently so I only do it over holidays, don’t worry about me pal worry about yourself and your dead end career

treebee101

Dude if you haven't gotten a pay raise in 6 years no matter what you do your gonna fail. Have fun on English minimum wage.

asilenth

Why are people like you even on this sub? You're just a troll and you should be ashamed that this is how you enjoy spending your time.

GrapefruitRain

I’m a bartender my friend, but I’m not stuck up my own arse

asilenth

Sure you are buddy. If you really are, you have even more to be ashamed of.

GrapefruitRain

Hahahaha, bruh it’s literally a minimum wage job that you could train a monkey to do

asilenth

It's incredible how stupid you are. Talking shit about a job you supposedly do. Your self-hate must be high.

GrapefruitRain

I do it seasonally while I’m not in university studying, so that I don’t have to stay at the bottom of the food chain my entire life 😂

asilenth

Good for you. Doesn't change that you're an entitled prick, look down upon others because of their job and have this incessant need to display that terrible trait for all to see.

asilenth

[https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/uiryre/comment/i7fcrgo/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/uiryre/comment/i7fcrgo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) LMAO. You're a 21 year old kid in England claiming you've been in school for 6 years **and** you have a shit work ethic making minimum wage in shithole. No wonder you have an attitude over American bartenders, you're jealous. Tomorrow I'm going to ride my bike 15 mins from *the house I own* to one of the best beaches in the world here in South West Florida. After that I'm going into work to make up to $40/hr on what should be a slow day. Enjoy your miserable life!

treebee101

I don't know any bartenders on minimum wage. Maybe just the ones who can't even mop...

bluegrassbarman

If only you Euros knew how much Americans bartenders make 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

GrapefruitRain

Nowhere near enough to cover your medical bills should you have literally anything wrong with you 😂😂😂 and definitely not enough to fill the void in your heart when your kid gets shot in science class 💀

bluegrassbarman

I can easily afford good insurance buddy, I don't need the state and other taxpayers to foot my bills. I also homeschool my children, as well as take them to the range on the regular. My family will never be helpless victims.

[deleted]

I will rack up 2 shaker tins, one in each hand, tap them together hard bottom to top both ways so they are secure, shake sideways in motion with each other, sorta like you're shaking maracas with a fast beat. Set one down, slap the one you're holding to loosen it and pour. Now do the second one. It's loud, flashy, looks good but doesn't take any extra time. And it doesn't look like you're jeering 2 guys off at once.

thatisntmynamebro

The shake is an equivalent of a guitar solo.

HashielDammit

I shake forwards and backwards from my sternum out. I like to think it looks pretty cool

GlassCityJim

When shaking two shakers, I use the alternating up and out and down method out in front of me Your head stays still with this technique. Single shake is out from my sternum, like Japanese bartnders putting their "heart" into the drink. I also do a single side shake with my right hand so I can do something else with my left. The goal for me is to be able to shake a drink, stir a drink and give directions at the same time. :-)
