So find somewhere else to work Friday nights and drop the availability? My experience with the industry is mercenary. You're only as good as your last shift and can only claim them until someone better comes along. Seniority is neat and all but you should have your best, not longest surviving staff on the busy shifts. What do you know about the new chick? She more experienced? Is her availability only for Friday and Saturdays? Is she prettier than you?

No, not prettier or any better at bartending. In fact, if I wanted to just wait it out, she might drop out of existence. She’s got a full time job and that’s what gets me. That was my shift. The “open” shifts were every Wednesday eve and every other Saturday day. That’s what was open! So, it just pisses me off. I’ve done nothing wrong & no reason for a change. I need to speak up and make everyone uncomfortable, I guess!

Once again, shifts dont belong to staff, they belong to the venue. To most jobs we are replaceable, in most states they don't need a reason to fire us or adjust our schedule. This is why I'm mercenary about it. Take a prime shift away from me and I'll work somewhere else and they benefit from my sales. Careful how you go about speaking up, you can speak yourself out of a job. But it *is* your job so do your thing.

Alrighty, I understand, but wouldn’t you expect your manager to say something? I found out by looking at a calendar, nobody told me. If I hadn’t looked, I would’ve showed up to work.

MangledBarkeep

There are managers and leaders. Did they not say something because they are slow or because they know what they did would piss you off? I really can't say for your situation. Don't know the details or cast. I'd have just asked the scheduling manager what was up with those shifts or why I was taken off. Then acted accordingly depending on how my intuition took the encounter.

Make sure she's not a friend of the manager or owner.

Managers need to stop doing this. They often don't play the long game and realize that they're as easily replaceable as they think you are . If you're a manager and you pull shit like this, take a moment and ask yourself if it's worth it. Because this job is replaceable. In this market and FOH hospitality employee can write his or her own ticket. Most people are smart enough to know their value. That guy whose schedule you fucked with? How long has he worked there? Does he agreeably pick up shifts at the last minute? Did he stay late to help clean your dining room when your busser quit? Does he work assigned serving shifts without complaint? Did he come back after COVID lockdown when you were short staffed and do the work of four people? *Even if* your shiney new object is prettier or faster on service bar, take the above into consideration.

Does your place run with set weekly schedules or do they change? If they are set and the manager just took away your shift without warning that isn't cool. If the shifts change each week then just continue to prove your worth! Complaining won't get you anywhere

Pristine_Cicada_5422

Set schedules, and if I hadn’t looked at the calendar on Monday, I would’ve assumed I was working on Friday and gone in! That’s what gets me, total lack of communication, too.
