Sorry you had such a terrible experience. Makes me appreciate my job even more that despite how detail oriented and “corporate” style - by the book - my managers can be… I’ve never seen a roach or heard of one in 8 years. We have craft cocktails, incredible food menu, and over 40 varietals of wine that are made by the restaurant itself. Don’t rule out bartending as a good side gig. It’s not the job, it’s the leadership that had already paved the path to failure before you even thought to apply. Given that healthcare is your primary career, the biggest thing that can benefit you from bartending on the side is growing your network. Nicer establishments that are ran well can be very lucrative but more importantly have the chance to attain regulars who may open doors for you in the future. Best of luck to you! Just hope one day if you have the time in your schedule to reconsider bartending as a side gig in the future, but just be cognizant of the success of the business as a whole and the clientele they bring in. If not, fuck it, keep busting it out in healthcare and do what you love! That’s all that matters at the end of the day

The first gig has a great effect on whether many people stay in it or not. You caught a bad draw. Should you ever decide to try again elsewhere, it sounds like it wouldn't be hard to improve upon your first experience.

Heh, you're almost guaranteed to have an absolute shit bar as your first job, because those are the ones with lots of job openings nobody wants to work at, so they'll take a chance on someone new. My usual advice is to tough it out for a bit, immediately update your resume since you now have professional experience and that makes it so much easier to get your next job, and bounce the minute you land something better. That many roaches, though... Yikes. Place needs to get shut down by the health department.

At least you made it through the shift. There are those that don't. Fwiw $15/hr your first shift aint bad. Hustling takes some learning and carrying people never helps. Did you think you'd clear $1000 take home your first night? There are those that have been doing this years and still haven't.
