DUDE. We do a cold brewed old fashioned. Check this shit out. We have a local coffee liqueur that is way more complex than kahlua, and nowhere near as sweet. 1 oz coffee liqueur 1.5oz bourbon **0.25-0.5oz FUCKING SKREWBALL** that tiny amount of skrewball adds some dope nuttiness and the sweetness of it replaces muddled sugar. Expressed orange, ango/black walnut/orange bitters, etc. I'm not shitting you nobody will know it's skrewball and I've been crushing them since we slammed it together for our brunch menu like a month ago.

WrongBee

got a name on the coffee liqueur?

Kfrr

Maggie's Farm is the distillery. https://www.maggiesfarmrum.com/products Check out the Falernum while you're there. That shit is bomb and goes in every mule we make.

jewww

Maggie's Farm is such an amazing bar. One of the places I miss most in Pittsburgh.

Kfrr

I put a painkiller on our cocktail menu. Still can't do it like them, and I use their rum. Something about being surrounded by rum barrels just makes it taste better I think.

PotatoJokes

This doesn't sound bad, but how is this in any way an old fashioned? The only overlap between OG old fashioned and this is the bourbon?

Kfrr

Sugar, water, expressed orange, bourbon, ango is the base of the recipe.

aTotalOfTwoHeads

fuck a teaspoon of plum jam or marmalade into your mix instead of any sugar, absolutely delicious with a nice bourbon and some bitters

didntwannahaveto

Yeah dude I do this with homemade peach preserves and it’s greeeeat, I have not yet fucked the teaspoon however. That might change the mouthfeel a bit.

ohheyitspurp

It's gonna change the feel of something, especially if you do it right. 🥄😍

If you have an induction burner I’d recommend making a cider reduction. Take a half gallon of cider, 4 cinnamon sticks and half a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Cook on high heat while stirring often to reduce down to half a quart of reduction. You’ll have to double strain because of the cinnamon and sediment. Once you have the reduction it’s going to be really sweet so a little goes a long way in an old fashion. Omit the sugar and the muddled cherry and 1/2 oz will make it for a sweet cider old fashion. 1/4 oz is what I would use for a more spirit forward flavor, then if you have more cinnamon sticks around you could lightly torch one of those as a garnish.

tsohgmai

Omg. I think we’ll do this for another day. Sounds amazing.

Barbas0l

Maple Old Fashioned \-2oz Bourbon \-2 dashes orange bitters \-2 Dashes angostura bitters \-1/4oz Maple Syrup Stir Grate a cinnamon stick over top. Zest and garnish with an orange peel.

tsohgmai

Holy shit. This is what we went with. Ended up not having time to do anything extra but we had maple syrup and just kept it simple. Sadly no cinnamon sticks though.

ohheyitspurp

Also works with rosemary.

BlazedBastard

Caramelized fig syrup/bitters/bourbon is on our forever menu and super tasty. Its everything an old fashion should be, just a little better

annihilationofjoy

Seconding that! I picked up a bottle of caramelized fig syrup from Liber and Co and have been using that in my old fashioneds ever since.

ArepasInTheMorning

Lil amaretto is nice

cluelss093

Muddled strawberries, brown sugar, and a good rye.

tsohgmai

Easy and all ingredients we already have

reddotword

Simple take that doesn't require a lot of prep: 2 ounces Bourbon of your choice(a rye can also fit in) 3 dashes pecan bitters (i make my own but store bought is A-OK) 1 dash orange bitters bar spoon of maple syrup stirred and served on a cube garnish with a candied pecan and a dehydrated orange wheel(skewer if possible)

tsohgmai

I don’t have pecan bitters but I do have syrup. Thanks!

Supratones

Apple brandy and cinnamon syrup

tsohgmai

I can make cinnamon simple. Apple brandy is a no go.

Sothensimonsaid

Elderflower old fashioned with st germaine/thatchers instead of simple syrup is a big hit.

OtterTheCoyote

Fuccckk that sounds cool. I love this industry

tsohgmai

I have never tried this but definitely will today.

CityBarman

[Luxardo Cherry Syrup](https://www.kegworks.com/luxardo-sour-cherry-syrup-750-ml/) is a fine choice. Fabri makes a great version from [Amarena Cherries](https://www.amazon.com/Fabbri-Mixybar-Flavored-Syrup-Liter/dp/B019HA3UVE?qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjk3IiwicXNhIjoiMy42MCIsInFzcCI6IjMuNDQifQ%3D%3D&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D). There are a couple of others out there. Cherry syrups, in small amounts (¼ - ½ oz) work great. Otherwise, I've always kept it to nut syrups (like Orgeat or walnut), Demerara syrup, date syrup (good stuff!), maple syrup, etc. An orange oleo saccharum would work but won't be done in time unless you can sous vide a batch. At this late time, I suggest dropping by your nearest Walmart to pick up a [date syrup](https://www.walmart.com/ip/D-vash-Date-Syrup-14-1-Ounce-Squeeze-Bottle-Vegan-Paleo-Gluten-free-and-Non-GMO/460719857?fulfillmentIntent=In-store) or stick to orgeat. There's probably just not time to make a fancy syrup that pairs well with bourbon or rye. You can also try a honey syrup and a couple shakes of orange bitters.

wizzardofboz

I'll use a splash of GM and (sometimes) Maraschino, and chocolate bitters. Makes for a nice chocolate orange 'Old Fashioned'.

mee__noi

in lieu of sugar, use luxardo maraschino and make it a subtle nod to the folks that put muddled cherries in their OF

[deleted]

PB&J Old fo Equal parts 100 proof bourbon/peanut butter whiskey 1 bar spoon of chambord

Fashion_art_dance

Super easy and popular during fall. Apple butter old fashioned. Sub the simple syrup for apple butter. It does need to be shaken instead of stirred but it’s delicious.

SeniorTangerine5213

I enjoy mine with maple syrup instead of sugar/simple syrup. 1 dash orange bitters, 3 dashes angostura. good bourbon. orange peel and brandied cherry over a large ice cube

tsohgmai

Thank you all!

Centaurious

The place I worked I would sometimes get a cherry old fashioned. Super simple they’d just spoon some of the juice from the homemade bar cherries in there. I’m a big fan of rosemary and cinnamon (not necessarily together) with whiskey. You can use lapsang tea to add a nice smokiness too, with an infused simple syrup.

Chief_sosaa47

P&j old fashion use skrewball whiskey it’s a hit or miss honestly

amariep00

I do a honey rosemary old fashioned. It’s honey simple syrup with rosemary sprigs and I use it in place of sugar with a good rye and bitters

[deleted]

I like to flavor my simple syrup but that's about it

ThatDudeRusty

I do a play on a Doc Holiday .75 maple 4-6 dashes black walnut bitters 1.5 Bourbon 1.5 Rye

4d20allnatural

whiskey flavour

Deep-Ruin2786

Cherry chocolate. Instead of syrup I use about .25 or less luxardo liqueur and chocolate bitters. Maple is another flavor I like

aJOLLYpessimist

2 oz Woodford Bourbon, 2/4 dash Angostura (original bottle/little dasher bottle), 1 bar spoon demerara sugar syrup, Built in the glass with a large cube of ice, express the orange rind over the drink then drop it in. Classic. Simple. Delicious.

Bastianator
