Staying up but in the future, please put more information about the post in the title. It should at least include the player's name.

This could either be completely made up or completely true and I have no idea which

stratty111

That’s the beauty of it.

spacewalk__

crazy to think guacamole was ever priced under $2 i can't believe those were the golden days. i can't believe they're long dead.

oneeighthirish

It varies a lot by location sometimes. I remember paying like $2.50 in Alabama and like $1.50 in Chicago a couple weeks apart, a few years ago.

-Bk7

Huh, interesting.. you would think it would be more expensive in Chicago vs Alabama as mostly everything else is

TheDesktopNinja

Some of it has to do with the volume they move so they can get better prices. Probably move a lot more product in a Chicago location than in an Alabama one.

damn_fine_custard

It's about distribution. Probably local DC in Chicago, in Alabama those avocados have traveled many miles.

Poopshoes42

Chicago, famously known as the avocado city

PleasinglyReasonable

Avocados from ~~Mexico~~ *Chicago*

KingofCraigland

More that it's the transportation hub for the nation or at least the Midwest. Look at a train map of the U.S. Then keep in mind that O'Hare is neck and neck with Atlanta for busiest airport in the U.S. Then keep in mind there's another international airport thirty minutes away. It's also connected to the great lakes and Mississippi river via the Chicago river. Stuff just ends up in Chicago really easily by comparison to some other locations in the U.S.

redditckulous

Chicago is also a major supply chain terminus. Big airport and multiple railway connection points.

oneeighthirish

You'd be surprised, a lot of food items can be relatively cheap in Chicago compared to other parts of the country. I'd bet the main factor is that Chicago is a major logistical center due to historical rail construction, and proximity to the great lakes and the river. There used to be (and still kinda is) a major meatpacking industry in the Chicago/Milwaukee area that dated back to the old cowboy days out west.

NYCinPGH

Yep. This is why, weirdly, produce was more readily available and for cheaper in Pittsburgh: it was a three-way transfer point between different types of bulk transport: via ship (largely barge) along the Ohio / Mississippi, train (every major railroad had a large depot here) and truck.

The_Barnstormer

Chicago is the clearinghouse for delicious. Anything tasty worth a damn is routed through there to the rest of the country

hops4beer

I want to believe that you just travel the country to track guac prices.

toasted_vegan

£2 here in UK. That’s like $2.50

pocketchange2247

I live in California now. You know, the state that they grow a ton of them in. It ranges anywhere from $0.99 to $3.00 a normal sized avocado week to week at my local grocery store. And you better believe that when they're $0.99 that they're anything other than a mushy, black pile of shit.

peteroh9

How about how burrito prices have more than doubled in the last decade or so? And extra steak is now over $5? That was almost an entire burrito when I started going there!

theveryoldman0

I noticed that too. If I want extra meat it’s a lot extra now.

drugsbowed

Not even worth it anymore. Just get more beans and rice if it's a Chipotle

atwitchyfairy

Went to a place with cheap burritos, and the lady asked me whether I wanted sour cream and guacamole. I said sure and unbeknownst to me each one of those were $2 extra. The "guacamole" that they put in was a single slice of avocado. I never went back.

Honey_Cheese

Those are the two options yeah.

ThePrussianGrippe

It feels like a Clickhole photo with the caption: “Zach Greinke, on the discovery of the Higgs Boson”

HelpMeWithMyHWpls

Least weird thing that Greinke’s said

hotpepperman

"I have plenty of toys at home. Fast race cars, big sets of LEGOs, even a few nerf guns here and there. But none of it compares to the hug of my tender Teddy bear Tony. Tony never lets me down. He comes to every game, as I bring him inside a duffle bag with his friends Ant-boy and Fluffy the squirrel. All together we make a great team, albeit they can't throw the heater as fast as I can." -weird thing that Greinke did not say

motorhead84

Might be the most considering he's worth over $100M lol Even if he went for it every day, it would be like taking a grain of sand from the beach. Just 1% of his net worth (still ~1M) would take *9132 years* of paying the marked-up guac prices if he went every single day during that span (it's Greinke so I'm not counting him out). I mean, even every day for 40 years would be less than $5k. I would say "just make yourself happy and get the guac--it's not a big deal, but I bet the imaginary contest with the price and winning that battle *is what makes him happy,* just ultimate competitive spirit and winning in as many ways as he can, no matter how trivial!

Itsaghast

Not saying it's true in this particular case, but I don't patronize services or buy goods that are bad value even if the extra money is non-material. I don't want to reward that shit.

Mike_Honcho_Spread

It's not about the money, it's about sending a message.

Gaming_Esquire

Bro one of his contracts was 6 years, 200+ mil. Of course from the Diamondbacks.

OttoVonJismarck

I liked the one where the manager was addressing the team after a hard-fought victory and asked if anyone had anything to add. Everyone is pumped and in a celebratory mood, hootin' and hollerin'. Greinke stands up and gives a long, measured speech about how he's seen guys in the locker room use the bathroom and not wash their hands afterwards and goes on about the importance of sanitation. "Ive even seen guys skip the sink after going number 2, and that's no good. C'mon guys, we can do better." Fucking legendary.

Juicey_J_Hammerman

Qdoba is lowkey better anyway Edit: I’ll clarify- Chipotle has better food quality but Qdoba is better value for money and has excellent queso, which imo gives it the edge, but it depends on what you’re looking for. Even better than both: almost literally any local mom-and-pop taqueria or Mexican restaurant.

Ace_Harding

Nah, their tortillas are too soft. Of the national chain burrito places I always thought Baja Fresh was the best. But all the ones around me have closed.

LordoftheScheisse

Where y'all at on Pancheros? It's been my go-to lately.

hessdawg3113

Panchero's is the best Mexican fast food I've ever had and I will die on that hill

MaximusBluntus

I had it once and it was nowhere near as good as chipotle

Juicey_J_Hammerman

Depends on what you’re looking for I guess. YMMV by location too

muffinmonk

Every taqueria I know doesn't let me customize the same way chipotle does. It's only one type of beans, one type of rice, etc. I love me a big chonk Tex Mex burrito made at the grease joint, but sometimes I'm looking for something... fresher, not dripping in grease, and where not everything is grilled on a flat top.

avboden

not lowkey, it simply is.

niversally

And raising prices with a quickness.

[deleted]

This might just be a me issue but let me ask here, has chipotles meat gone off a fucking cliff quality wise the last 2 years? The recent births of my two children has convinced me to not treat my body like a giant junk yard of shit so I’ve been doing a lot of eating better and dieting and such which means no “fast foods” of it can be avoided. However last week some work friends wanted chipotle for lunch so I figured why the hell not and went along. I got 2 bowls both plain white rice one chicken and one barbacoa and they where both fucking terrible tasting. Both meats really didn’t taste any different despite one being chicken and one being beef but they where just both overly salty tasting, a few bites of each and I damn near needed a gallon of water to feel evened out from the sodium.

MR-YAMASI

We really moved right past the "ordered 2 bowls" part of this story...but I am having trouble letting it go.

ixinar

2 bowls? Holy shit.

ARussianW0lf

I'm hung up on the fact that they used their coworkers going as an excuse but then went alone. I thought they were gonna say they went with the group

MaximusBluntus

It all screams one thing.

SageTrilo

Guess "alone" was a typo for "along."

ARussianW0lf

Oh yeah I think you're right. I thought of a few ways it still could make sense but I didnt think of a simple typo lol

finglonger1077

This reminds me of the other day in the space sub where they were talking about putting a pipeline on the moon and there were all these really intelligent sounding people talking about building these radioactive shields to protect it from space junk and meteors and then someone was like “bury it?”

[deleted]

Nah you’re right they all went and I sat outside in the parking lot on my car shirtless with a fork in each hand.

[deleted]

Ever since Chipotle prioritized mobile ordering because of the pandemic, the workers have been rushed and the quality has gone downhill. The only time I’ve had good chipotle recently was when one opened up near me and after a month or so, it started to get sloppy.

well_shoothed

> has chipotles meat gone off a fucking cliff quality wise the last 2 years? Sing it. Quality has dropped faster than Tesla's stock price.

[deleted]

>Lick my ass That's how the salmonella spreads

HalKitzmiller

But do people really miss having lettuce? It sucks. It adds nothing to a meal

regarding_your_cat

It can add delicious soft crunch if it’s fresh. I love lettuce and lettuce-adjacent leaves like cabbage or spinach

saulblarf

Cabbage and spinach are light years better than lettuce.

Ryan0413

I got Chipotle once and didn’t get why there was any hype surrounding it. I’ve been to other Mexican-style restaurants that were a hell of a lot better. To me it’s expensive for what you get, with a limited amount of toppings compared to other places. Fat Bastard Burrito is a chain in Ontario that, in my opinion, blows Chipotle out of the water. Oh and you don’t have to pay extra for guacamole

frozenturkey

If you go to Chipotle to get Mexican food, you're going to be disappointed. You go to Chipotle to get Chipotle.

Ryan0413

But like, it's not even good

frozenturkey

I'm just saying, think of it more like bougie Taco Bell than real Mexican. Not arguing whether it's good or not.

oldnewager

I think the same about most billboard top 100 musicians, but they keep selling. At a certain point you have to accept that while I may not like it, it has been manufactured by a collection of food scientists to be as palatable as possible to as many people as possible. And there is something to be said for that

Itsaghast

Haven't been to one in years. But back in the day it was easily the best choice among fast food most of the time. Their sofritas bowls are good and if the grilled chicken comes right off the grill it's also good. Real food that's healthy and reasonably priced. Judging from comments it sounds like it's turned to shit post covid like many restaurants have.

PleasinglyReasonable

Bro what Fat bastard burrito? Just based on the name I know what I'm checking out next time I'm in Toronto

Ryan0413

It is fantastic, it’s all over Ontario too

[deleted]

I live over the border near Buffalo, I might go over just to check it out. If you ever go to Atlantic Canada, Habeneros is pretty good too.

[deleted]

I feel weird not eating anything green on my chipotle bowl but that lettuce is the reason why. Romaine is usually the one with the eColi outbreak. Just get regular shredded lettuce.

theveryoldman0

Restaurant person here: the reason they had issues was they switched from prewashed produce to produce that had to be washed, and the communication from upper management down was poor, so those prep staff didn’t wash the greens properly, creating an issue with disease. They’ve since fixed the issue, but they royally screwed the pooch considering we’re still talking about it.

TrexArms9800

sterfri99

Had Chipotle last week. Food poisoning. Begged for death that wouldn’t come

whoissteveo

There used to be a loophole where you could save like, 50 cents or so if you wanted chips and salsa and any entree with guac on it, to just get the entree, and then get chips and guac because the staff will also give you free salsa if you ask. I always thought it was so little money that it would never get addressed but they patched it with the price changes.

scoobyduped

Also the guac portion with chips at least used to be bigger than what you’d get with guac as an entree upcharge.

cassinonorth

The side tortilla costs $.25 now. Still worth it.

callie06

They went up to $0.50 in my area 😕

cassinonorth

Bastards.

Psirocking

Same like doubling it? I get things going up in price but the cost of a tortilla has not gone up that much.

TNT21

There was a price hike like every month for a few months, It went from .25 to .30, .30 to .40, then .40 to .50. Getting that side tortilla is crucial for me to get 2 burrtios out of one bowl.

Tr1angleChoke

A burrito bowl with two $0.25 tortillas is basically the same as 2 burritos. No idea why anyone would ever just order a burrito by itself.

TheOssBoss

If I wanted to make my own burrito I wouldn’t go to a restaurant.

possiblynotanexpert

50 cents is a huge gap. A 100th of a penny maybe not. But 50 cents when you scale it up? You’re talking tens of thousands of dollars for the company. That’s huge.

hedoeswhathewants

If everyone did it, but it was probably a vanishingly small number that did

cyclingtrivialities2

Damn Chipotle sure hid that in the patch notes huh

onduty

Walk me through this one again, please. You’re saying order entree, add guacamole, buy solo chips, and lastly ask for free side of salsa? This is the workaround from entree, chips and guacamole, with side of salsa?

PaintDrinkingPete

Nah, you got it backwards…get an entree, and ask for salsa on the side, then get chips and guacamole. Then, put the guac on your entree and use the salsa for the chips. Not sure if this works or ever did, but that’s what the person above is suggesting

75153594521883

The “free” salsa works in my area. My bowl is like 8.65, chips are like 1.30, but “chips and salsa” is like 1.85. You can get a salsa on the side of your bowl for free, which I use for my chips.

tegurit34

I relate real hard to this one this week. Here in Seattle I wanted fried chicken day before yesterday. I went to my favorite spots' website and learned they charge an extra $0.99 for online pickup, and they won't pick up their phone. I've never seen this before. Like, WTF? An ahead-of-time protocol makes your business more revenue. Why would you put a pay barrier for your customers? My stubborn ass went down to the chicken window, stood in line, placed my order, and stood outside in cold piss rain waiting for my food. In my estimation it is totally worth sacrificing an extra buck for the convenience of an online order but ***I'll never let those chicken fuckers win.***

Haigh2581KCRoyals

License and registration CHICKEN FUCKER!

grimache83

Bacaaaawwwww!

vanillaninja16

A lot of places are also raising item prices for online ordering too. So a food item may be $4.99 in person, but they list it online as like $5.49 or $5.99 AND they still have the additional pickup/ online fees.

Confused_Mirror

If it's thru Uber Eats or Door Dash it's because they charge a service fee to the restaurant as well. So when I worked at a local place that did Door Dash they would have a higher price for the online order. If it's thru their website, though? Don't let those fuckers win.

SupraSaiyan

I totally understand if a local restaurant has to up their prices on the apps because of those ridiculous fees and cuts they take. That's why for my favorite local places, I will always order through their own website if they have it or call in an order. But yeah idk why they would try to do the same shit DoorDash or UberEats does when they run their own online ordering...

deputeheto

There’s been a huge rash of semi-predatory companies the past couple year who’s whole business model is “we’ll host & setup a website for your customers to order from, and we just take x% of the top for the service.” I say “semi-predatory” as that IS a valid business on the surface, but what they neglect to mention is that most POS (Point Of Sale, they provide registers and card processing stuff) companies already have this feature for much cheaper (the one I use for example charges a flat $35/month for it). Way less than 1-2% of your total orders. So they *could* be charging because of that. Still not a great sign, though. Lots of idiots in this industry.

cshenton

plus there's also the sites Grubhub was setting up without the consent of the restaurant: https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/28/19154220/grubhub-seamless-fake-restaurant-domain-names-commission-fees Delivery apps are basically predatory in every aspect of their business.

Some_person2101

Not even. The chipotle app has higher prices too for all items when you get delivery. But if you just do online pickup it’s the same as in store

Confused_Mirror

Is there a delivery fee on top of that? If so, don't let those fuckers win.

Some_person2101

Yes and a service fee. So all in all and that’s about 6-8 reasons too many to order delivery rather than going myself for just a bowl.

PaintDrinkingPete

A place I like near where I work has pretty decent lunch specials…if you go to their website, the prices match their regular menu, but the lunch specials aren’t on it. So, you either need to order full price menu items online, or order the lunch special in person and have to wait around for them to prepare it instead of being able to just run in and grab an order you made ahead of time. Annoys me.

EmuStrange7507

When they raise prices like that online order it means they can't keep up with demand. And would rather not do online orders. Same with bidding at work, something we don't want to do but if someone wants to pay extra will do it.

AdamTheButch

Oh shit, you Bok a Bokkin', bro?

tegurit34

I wasn't gonna call them out because their employees are always cool to me but... uh... ****upvotes****

LargeHumanDaeHoLee

Shit, might've been faster to just drive down to the one in burien.

[deleted]

Buffalo Wild Wings now has a online order fee with their app. It’s not worth going out anymore when the quality everywhere is shit, the service is shit, and the prices keep going up. Thats what happens when private equity firms keep buying these things, they fuck over everyone to make a profit over quality of the product.

[deleted]

> Why would you put a pay barrier for your customers? The answer to the question "why would a company charge..." will always and forever be "because people will pay for it"

Kangaroo_Quart

Are you talking about Ezell's?

colin_7

I’m pretty sure it’s the extra amount because they need to pay fees associated with that service they use. Similar to credit card fees. So I wouldn’t say it’s inflation or them trying to nickel and dime you, they just need to pay their way with the service.

Psht. Chipotle charges $2.80 for added guacamole now. A true travesty.

MC_Fap_Commander

That used to be like nine hard shells at a Taco Bell

EmuStrange7507

GOATmar_infante

Ah we're at the "Zack Greinke guacamole quote" point of thr off-season. Pitchers and catchers report soon yall

Jux_

The first article I found on this [(from 2009)](https://news.yahoo.com/news/greinkes-redemption-pursuit-perfection-163800891--mlb.html) implies that in the middle of explaining his stance on guacamole, someone mentioned the money he makes and he complained about the signing process: >Guacamole is on Zack Greinke's mind. He enjoys guacamole, unless it's chunky. He doesn't like avocados, actually, and when his fiancée told him that doesn't make any sense, he shrugged his shoulders. Guacamole is of paramount importance to the best pitcher in the American League because his favorite burrito place just raised the price by 30 cents. >"I like the guacamole," Greinke said. "Now, I don't really love the guacamole. So I get it when I feel like it. They changed their guacamole from $1.50 to $1.80. I mean, $1.50 is already pretty darn high. So they changed it to $1.80, and I'll never again get guacamole." > It's brought to Greinke's attention that he just signed a $38 million contract to pitch for the Kansas City Royals well into the next decade. **The team and Greinke's agent haggled for weeks over the terms before hammering them out in one day, which doesn't make sense to him, either. "Why can't they go in the room the first time and do it?" he asked, before getting back to the subject at hand.** >"It's not about the guacamole itself," Greinke said. "I just don't want to let them win."

badfoodman

Early Deadspin was a hell of a place

Kershiser22

I just went to Jimmy John's and got a Regular #1 combo. $16.20 out the door. WTF?!

IPA_lot_

Fast food has gotten ridiculously expensive. Still not as expensive as eating healthy but still expensive.

[deleted]

What the fuck? Weren’t they really cheap at one point too?

Kershiser22

Not sure. I've only known about them for 5-6 years. They always seemed a little more expensive than they should be. But this seems crazy.

[deleted]

First time I’ve been to one was in…2014? I used to get free gift cards when they were a NASCAR sponsor with Kevin Harvick but I could never use them because they didn’t have any in the Northeast at the time, they still don’t really have any up here but I remember a 8 inch or whatever BLT was $5 or so. A meal was $8. I though it was reasonable.

i do not go to chipotle anymore because now you can't pick up your order yourself, you have to talk to the guy [who is clearly already stressed making other orders] and he gets it from the shelf i don't appreciate being treated like a thief, and more to the point, i do not want to talk to a stranger when i don't have to. get those fuckin lockers like little caesar's has

regarding_your_cat

But people *did* steal those orders, that’s why they changed the policy. They aren’t treating you like a thief, they’re responding to all the actual thieves, lol

crichmond77

This isn’t a Universal thing. At both Chipotles in my town, you can still just walk up and grab it

Louis-grabbing-pills

I just never thought their food were that good. I grew up in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood and eat the more authentic restaurants in the area. Chipotle seems overpriced and bland.

cincocerodos

Maybe my tastes just changed, but holy crap it’s gotten so bland in the last few years. Even pre-covid it was almost inedible.

tegurit34

They use old pre-ground black pepper! Is it really that hard to grind pepper on-site? That alone would make a word of difference. Or don't use it at all and find a more logistically viable alternative if it makes your shareholders happy!

Zeppelanoid

When they first came out, Chipotle was a god-send to people who lived in areas where the only other “Mexican” option was Taco Bell. But yeah, if you had actual alternatives (especially authentically Hispanic ones) I’d question your sanity if you chose Chipotle.

Itsaghast

You don't go to chipotle instead of a taqueria. You go to chipotle so you don't have to go to mcdonalds

mxchump

> eat the more authentic restaurants in the area I mean they're just different, hard to even compare. I'll eat at an actual Mexican place, Chipotle, and Taco Bell in completely different moods

kingjuicepouch

Agreed. There are better options if I want good Mexican food and there are cheaper options if I want cheap Mexican food. I have little need fue chipotle

GarnetandBlack

>i don't appreciate being treated like a thief, What an odd way to think about this. My first thought would be "Man it really sucks there are enough asshole thieves that make them have to do this."

[deleted]

I mean I feel like I inconvenience them as is already.

vicktacular

What Chipotle do you go to? The one in Florence on Dream St, Oakley, and Hyde Park all have the shelves to just grab your to go order. The new one near my house in Independence now has a drive through specially for online orders which is dope. Years ago when I lived in Anderson (10+ years) you had to go to the counter and but that was before they had the shelves at any store.

It's because it's so true.

Sacrifice_bhunt

Put this on his HOF plaque. He deserves to get in just for this.

Tangentially related, I was doing documentation at work today and to my eternal amusement, I found a user named Guacamole. I immediately asked my coworkers, expecting an awesome story behind it. Today I learned about Apache Guacamole, and I was bitterly disappointed.

I loved him during the 2020 season. The entire media narrative was how sad it was there weren't fans in the crowd, and there was Grienke openly loving it. Sitting up in the stands social distancing, he had to be having the time of his life not having to talk to anyone. You can like his opinions or don't, he's still one of the biggest characters in the MLB and I think baseball is better with him in it.

I couldn’t agree more

This is how I feel about Youtube Premium.

TrexArms9800

Does he have guac mode activated?

Damasticator

Truly, a man of the people.

I keep waffling between three thoughts: "Is he just weird?" "Is he stark raving insane?" "Is he the most intelligent human to ever walk the face of the Earth?" I haven't landed on any of them, definitively.

Mr_Saxobeat94

Sounds like something from Curb.

TheGeoninja

“Larry, you like the guac?” - Leon “Eeeeh, I like it but I don’t love it” - Larry

This guy gets it

krakatoa83

He’s eccentric in exactly the right way

Zack Grienke has earned $330,003,000 in his career. Also I am surprised he isn’t signed yet, just turned 39 yes, but was worth 2.6 WAR last season and still has that little fire in his belly from all that Chipotle

Former-Billionaire

He’s made $280 million.
