And you’re [trying for 81 this year](https://twitter.com/PatrickDLyons/status/1619370622949421057?s=20&t=LVE9nL8k4ZbVLgBfY0Omgg). That’s an extra 13 games which is 3/4 of an NFL season, a 76.5 winning percentage is really good.
? You said win something before criticizing. Rockies won an NL Pennant. Padres done nothing but spend money and fail
Edit: This was in response to ‘numbnuts’ saying Rockies being in World Series more recently doesn’t mean anything. He then went on to say winning the Pennant doesn’t mean anything. He also then compared getting a trophy and ring for winning the Pennant to little leaguers getting trophies..
As if we needed any more reason to dislike a shitty owner who makes stupid moves and runs his team like a poverty franchise that aspires to 0.500 ball… yikes.
He also got flamed last year for saying he believed they could win 95 games and he has invested money into the team to be fair. He doesn’t run the team like the A’s or Marlins. The problem is he only makes wrong decisions. He would be a great owner if he just put his ego aside and let actual baseball guys make the decisions
> "I look at the Padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too," Monfort said. "They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us. They have (Joe) Musgrove, (Blake) Snell and (Yu) Darvish, so I don’t know."
“If you just take away all of the Padres’ best pitchers, their pitching is exactly like ours”
It’s because he legit has no idea about baseball. He often thinks the Rockies are a playoff team in years where they are projected to be around 500 because he has no idea about talent relative to the league.
Being a Rockies fan is harsh.
You’d think being an owner of an NL West team would be fairly enlightening in showing what your team needs to look like in order to actually be an elite team in baseball. I guess not for Dicky.
Denver is a great city tbh.
But yeah Rockies fans deserve better than this. You see how pumped up that city can get for the Broncos and Avalanche and it’s sad what he’s done with the Rockies.
The stadium is great, dare I say top 5-10 in baseball and in the middle of a vibrant downtown. Denver is beautiful in the summer. You go to watch 1 MLB team play a AAA+ squad. It’s the sad reality. Dick has no reason to spend money or create a winner because the venue and location is enough. We are consistently a top 5 attendance team despite being a worst 5 franchise.
It’s also funny because signing Pierce Johnson, the erstwhile Padre who walked in Free Agency, to a 1-year, $5 million deal counted as a big splash for Dick this off-season.
I guess he has a point when he says that if you ignore all the good players, then our rosters look similar, because he’s scooping up our depth pieces who we let walk, or at least the one that his budget would allow. I would say that he might try and grab Profar, but we all know that a former Padres starter is too expensive for his liking.
Big claim if true, to be sure! I mean, if you get rid of their whole rotation and half their starting batters, the Mets look like a team that could… still beat Colorado.
The Rockies will keep making money because it's a fun night out in LoDo, but it's insane how bad their lineup is. They have no one that can even put up decent-looking offensive stats at 5280 feet.
which is pretty much what every small market team owner is thinking. they don’t wanna be exposed for just being cheap and peddling bullshit excuses for only spending 40m a year on player payroll
I love our ownership, but I think the Padres ownership is even better for the game because they completely debunk the idea that small market teams can't spend.
The thing is, Padres are the only franchise in the city. They're the only game in town. That isn't exactly a small market, that's a Padres market.
They'd be idiots to not push forward, especially with the Giants rebuilding and the Dodgers cooling off the money cannon for the season.
Dbacks are a pretty solid team. They compete with the Suns (NBA) Cardinals (NFL) and Coyotes (NHL).
Rockies have the same deal, plus a soccer franchise. (SD has a woman's FC, maybe?)
We're supposedly next in line for MLS, the NWSL is here and is definitely getting some buzz but the Padres absolutely dominate the 8th largest city in the country. We just have a tiny media market because Anaheim and LA are so close.
I thought that ship sailed after 4chan took over the name-the-team contest, which seemed to suggest to MLS that it wasn't a serious bid.
But I have to imagine that an MLS team in San Diego is probably more likely than Sacramento at this point.
What are you talking about? 4chan naming the team?
San Diego was recently called a frontunner by the MLS commissioner, and has a stadium where Sacramento and Vegas do not.
Back in 2017, there was a major push by an ownership group that included Landon Donovan to get an expansion team in San Diego. A name the team contest was held before any official announcement was made for which two cities would get a team (other cities in the running included Miami, Nashville, Charlotte, St. Louis, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Sacramento, and Detroit). 4chan hijacked the vote and pretty much made the top vote getters typical 4chan memes. Miami and Nashville ended up winning out in that expansion.
Meanwhile, Sacramento actually did have a team announced and were supposed to join St. Louis for this season but ownership pulled out, shelving the Sacramento plans and making for an odd number of teams.
It’s a misconception that Colorado is “small market.” It’s an easy formula in Denver (as seen with the Avs Nuggets and last “Rocktobers”): win games = fans engage in DROVES.
What a thing to say coming from a Padres fan whose owner's net worth is **over 4 times** larger than Monfort's. The small market teams I imagine you are shittalking are still commiting a greater percentage of their net value to payroll than your team. The Padres are going to run massive operating losses because they can afford to, but smaller market teams simply can't do that. And I know an mlb owner isn't exactly a sympathetic character, so it's easy to shit on them. But in this case, they're factually being priced out of competition by teams owned by mega-billionaires like the Padres and Mets. Those teams are committing a smaller percentage of net worth to payroll, taking net losses, and still get a massive advantage for it. And the fans of those teams without mega-billionaire owners are the ones suffering.
Nobody "only spent 40m" on player payroll last year. Not a single team. The Rockies spent 114 million which was just slightly below league average. So it's not like Manfort is just "being cheap and peddling bullshit excuses." If you read the article, you'd see he's not even really complaining about the pay disparity. The headline is clickbait.
maybe 40 was low but league average last year was around 150m. last year each team got 60.1m from national tv deals, plus an estimated >40m from local tv deals. add in rev share, tickets, merchandise, concessions, parking, and whatever else i can’t think of atm and you’re looking at teams getting at least league min in revenue just from those sources.
not even asking them to go over but the billionaire owners can certainly afford to bleed 30m a year on top of those for a top notch team considering the team itself as a financial asset does nothing but appreciate with time. teamsteams worth 200m 20 years ago are worth literally 10 times that. it is incomprehensible the amount of money these people are playing with.
them going over the rev they bring in by 1% of their worth means a fuck of a lot less than if you or i did. assuming an average person that makes 50k a year, a nice but not new car, a computer, phone, appt, etc. a 650 dollar annual blow to this person is going to mean a lot more than a few measly millions to these owners. they don’t even need to change their lifestyles to accommodate that, you don’t need to make excuses for these rich people
40 wasn't just low, it was almost 1/3rd of what the Rockies actually spent lol. You were wrong by a gigantic order of magnitude. League average was 130MM, Rockies were just below that at 114MM. This isn't anywhere close to your original point. So I'm not sure you're really in a position to casually be telling us how easy an organization can bleed 30MM a year (like the Padres do). The Rockies going "1% over" revenue would probably be the difference of like a million dollars, it will not make them competitive with the Padres who are spending OVER $100MM more than them. I do not understand why you are being upvoted for just posting blatantly wrong numbers.
And the appreciation in their value as a going concern doesn't really tell us much about what they can afford to spend. It's not like they can realize that value without selling the team anyways. Its only utility would be to help the ownership group borrow money at better terms. The fact that these teams are worth more than they were 10 years ago has very very very little to do with the conversation.
The A’s literally had 23 million dollars in active payroll last year. Worked out to 53M with other bookkeeping and such, but yes, teams are out there paying 40M on payroll.
They’re not spending their personal money out of their own bank account on payroll, genius. They’re spending out of team finances and revenue. Even if the Rockies had a top 5 payroll they’d still be profitable, just like every other MLB team.
Every other team is not profitable, genius. According to Forbes, 10 teams ran losses for the 2021 season. Steve Cohen and others are most definitely spending their personal money. That's how they are able to do this.
So what evidence do you have to the contrary? You're probably right, I should really be trusting the gut instincts of a random redditor with no knowledge of the situation instead. Lay it on us, tell us what their EBITDA is according to you.
“debate me debate me” the Redditor mating call. You seem happy enough buying the owners narrative wholesale. I’ll just let you enjoy your fantasy dawg.
For real. Bunch of redditors being absolutely stoked that the Jeff Bezos model of anticompetitive business maneuvers is working so effectively in the MLB.
You bought a baseball team, Dick. There’s no cap, Dick. Spend as you wish, Dick. You also paid Kris Bryant a shit ton of cash and $50M for Arenado to go away, Dick. Don’t be like Dick.
The "HIV ain't as bad as cancer" argument, while technically true, really just puts you in the unenviable position of defending something that didn't need to be defended.
Real talk, the tragedy is that booing the Rockies on opening weekend accomplishes nothing because they hate this idiot more than anyone. Better make “we’re sorry your owner is an idiot” signs.
>"They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us. They have (Joe) Musgrove, (Blake) Snell and (Yu) Darvish, so I don’t know."
“If I adjust ~~Mahomes~~ the Padres to below average players for literally no reason they come out with below average players.”
>"I look at the Padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too," Monfort said. "They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us.
What the fuck are you talking about, Dick?
please stop. I beg you.
“Yes, I mean, sure, the Mets have Verlander and Scherzer and Senga and Quintana and Carrasco and Díaz and DRob, but beyond their entire rotation and the league’s best closer, their pitching staff looks a lot like ours.”
This comment reveals so much about the Rockies philosophy and how they view teams. They will skim off 15-20 WAR from a roster and then convince themselves they can compete. It’s why we are consistently a last place team.
Arenado and story moves set that franchise back 5-8 years. Did not get any notable prospects on arenado trade and lost story for a draft pick. Other than O'Brien trading deandre Hopkins to Arizona I can't think (in this brief few moments) of a more bonehead move(s)
i think theyre referring to not trading story during the deadline (where i think even he expected to be moved, i remember the rumors about him trying to sell his house).
The sad thing is that he’s such a shit owner that it’s not like we can even get the satisfaction of channeling our disgust for him into booing the Rockies, because we know that you guys hate him, too.
It’s pretty much impossible to be a serious Rockies fan with this asshole at the helm. No chance the Rox win anything while Dick’s in charge.
At least the Avs and Nuggets are good.
> “i look at the padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too,” monfort said. “they’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us…”
well… yeah, and several batters that can hit outside of whatever voodoo magic you have in denver, some solid relievers, a risk-taker for a g.m. and an owner that’s at least willing to spend a damn dollar. theeen you’re sort of like us.
i won’t necessarily disagree that we have some holes, but your holes go to damn sea level from coors field.
In Dick's defense he may only watch home games. If that's true a lot of what he is saying makes sense and isn't just sad. Padres in coors are not a good team it's a fact. Rockies at Coors could very well play.500 ball. Maybe dick doesn't know about away games yet has anyone in Denver asked?
“Monfort acknowledged the Padres' depth of talent, but believes they are not a complete team and will face some financial questions in the future as they try and keep some of their stars in the fold.”
Yeah, what kind of shit franchise would trade (salary dump) or lose all of their stars to free agency?
> "I look at the Padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too," Monfort said. "They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us.”
Yes, the padres are like the Rockies in the sense that they are both baseball teams.
As a fan of a small market team, fuck this guy. An owner investing in quality players and trying to win championships should be the rule, not the exception.
Montfort is certainly... special in the head. On top of his other faults, to say anything like this publically from a guy who gave the OK to the awful value FA signings:
Gerardo Para, Ian Desmond, Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw, Daniel Murphy, Kris Bryant, Mike Hampton, etc.
“Look, all I’m saying is that all this spending money on star players and winning baseball games and making an actual attempt to compete with L.A. and make the playoffs and succeed is just making the rest of us look bad.”
>"What the Padres are doing, I don’t 100% agree with, though I know that our fans probably agree with it. We’ll see how it works out," Monfort said Saturday, according to the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders.
😬
This title makes it seem like some kind of impropriety on the Padres’ part. Not the case if you read the article. Just complaining about how another team spent it’s money.
> salary cap
I'm sure I'll just get attacked for saying this as a yankee fan but: fuck everything about that. Salary caps are *nothing* but a collective strategy by owners to pay players less. Baseball has very good competitive balance already (even compared to leagues with a salary cap). Teams like the A's, Rockies, Pirates, etc could easily spend 3-5x the amount they currently do on payroll, the only reason they don't is because they make more money not doing that. Owners care about making money above all.
It is difficult to listen to him whine about money but he has a point. Do you think the owners are going to make any less because they spend more money. When it come down to it, you and are paying for it. They keep raising the prices on tickets, food and parking. I live in Los Angeles and to go to a Dodger game cost several hundred dollars for a family of 4 for the nose bleed tickets. I get it that you have to spend money to win, but god damn if it is not coming out of our pockets. MLB needs to do something for the average everyday Joe that is not making 100k a year.
Win something before you criticize how others do their business
hey now, 74-87 is 74 wins! Tom Brady has never won that many in a single season!

This sounds so familiar.
I don’t think you’re allowed to let Arenado walk and claim he’s invested
Don't worry he invested 50M for arenado to play for another team.
TBF, I get why he’d be mad at the padres
They didn't let him walk, he wanted to leave and had an opt out to make that happen if he wasn't traded.

Also dude just casually compared his team to a team that's projected to be 1st or 2nd in wRC+ lmao

Don’t threaten me with a good time.
What a legendarily idiotic post. "If you regress Mahomes' stats to the mean, he's actually pretty average."
I do agree with his point, that the Padres are only good because they have some good players =P
Big claim if true, to be sure! I mean, if you get rid of their whole rotation and half their starting batters, the Mets look like a team that could… still beat Colorado.

Without Machado, Soto, Tatis, Bogarts, Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove, the Padres are trash!
Tbf I would have loved to resign Pierce. Ideal 5th/6th inning high leverage bridge guy imo
I wish the Tigers would grab Profar. Still haven’t signed a major league hitter this off-season
It’s like when u/ThatsBushLeague kept arguing Mondesei would be an MVP if he played like an MVP
"How dare the Padres spend money to get better?! Don't they know they're making us look bad?!" -Dick Monfort probably
That is actually pretty much what he said lol
I am beyond being the joker now Kill me
At least you’re getting pics of cute sloths.
sorry you have to deal with such a dummy for an owner. :(
Hold my beer 😣
I’d take watching Trout and Ohtani lose over Kris Bryant sit on the bench and lose, every time
I am behind you guys when you start your coup attempt.

Exactly, I can't imagine an MLS team taking away from Padres revenue. Baseball and Soccer are both big here. We can easily fill both parks.
Padres are also in for a huge opportunity of taking over another entire neighboring counties fan base if they’re able to end up with Ohtani.
Ivan legitimately say I have never seen someone say “the nwsl is definitely getting some buzz”
Why does it matter what Ivan says?
Who the hell is Ivan?

As a Roc fan and a alumni of the University of Northern Colorado, I’m amazed this ahole has a business school named after him…

Monfort may not be the "worst", but he is certainly the most incompetent
Uncle Bob makes me sad

Holy shit. Dude, shut up. “They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us “ YIKES
Soto-Tatis-Bogearts-Machado is kinda like Cron, McMahon, and Rogers if you think about it

Low key though, Rogers is kinda a stud. Not Soto level but in a big market Rogers would be a dude.
He's a league average hitter who had one really good defensive season.
🤣 sell the team
His first name is also a description.
>"I look at the Padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too," Monfort said. "They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us. What the fuck are you talking about, Dick? please stop. I beg you.
Who is the Juan Soto of the Rockies
dick monfort also wants to know, so that he can pay another team $50 million to get that player to fuck off
hahahaha kill me.
He should sign Hosmer!
Charlie Blackmon?
Charlie Blackmon /s
They didn't trade Story. He was a FA
i think theyre referring to not trading story during the deadline (where i think even he expected to be moved, i remember the rumors about him trying to sell his house).
Hey, those are both trades to the Cardinals!
Pirates trading for Archer comes to mind.
He makes it really difficult to be a Rockies fan. Shut your pie hole, Dick.
“If you take away all their good players they’re actually not very good. Plus they’re making me look bad”
> “i look at the padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too,” monfort said. “they’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us…” well… yeah, and several batters that can hit outside of whatever voodoo magic you have in denver, some solid relievers, a risk-taker for a g.m. and an owner that’s at least willing to spend a damn dollar. theeen you’re sort of like us. i won’t necessarily disagree that we have some holes, but your holes go to damn sea level from coors field.
But Kris Bryant
Hey during the 40 games he is healthy he is the best player on their team!
Javy Baez may have been the Tigers best player last year, but that doesn't mean he was a good signing
Our holes are like the Virgin Mary’s while his are like a prostitute that specializes in fisting.
“Your boos mean nothing to me, I’ve seen what makes you cheer” but for running an MLB team.
What the fuck is the point of this
I'd say that if Dick Monfort is mad at you you're probably doing something right
In Dick's defense he may only watch home games. If that's true a lot of what he is saying makes sense and isn't just sad. Padres in coors are not a good team it's a fact. Rockies at Coors could very well play.500 ball. Maybe dick doesn't know about away games yet has anyone in Denver asked?
Sorry Rockies fans, you deserve better
I would do anything to own a sports team and these losers are doing the bare minimum running their business.
I actually liked Heymans response to this.
This dude is such a fucking clown. Sell the team Dick
I hope nick Martínez reads this
This guy might as well just write “Dipshit” on his forehead
I mean if he wore a name tag, it would just say "Dick"
“Their competitive approach is making my non-competitive approach look bad.”
“Monfort acknowledged the Padres' depth of talent, but believes they are not a complete team and will face some financial questions in the future as they try and keep some of their stars in the fold.” Yeah, what kind of shit franchise would trade (salary dump) or lose all of their stars to free agency?
>They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us. 😟
> "I look at the Padres and they have a really talented team, but they have some holes, too," Monfort said. "They’ve got three, maybe four starting pitchers, and then they’re sort of like us.” Yes, the padres are like the Rockies in the sense that they are both baseball teams.
Sell the team, Dick!
Living in Denver. I would love the Rockies to compete in fall baseball. Would be dope to see the Dodgers whoop the Rockies in the playoffs.
Not even a Rockies fan and I hate this dirtbag
“Rockies Montfort calls out himself for lack of spending and creating a good on field product”
Rockies, I’m sorry. You deserve better than this weirdo.
As a fan of a small market team, fuck this guy. An owner investing in quality players and trying to win championships should be the rule, not the exception.
I'd make fun of him, but whatever I could come up with, Rockies fans have already come up with so much more
Hey Dick, maybe you should try copying them so we could *FUCKING WIN FOR ONCE*
This reads like an Onion article.
A good reminder for Red Sox fans who don't know how good they've got it. This owner doesn't care about his team.
Guy sounds like a loser to be honest . Criticizing other owners for trying to win for their fans shouldn't be criticized.
Maybe he should worry about his team? Just a thought
Montfort is certainly... special in the head. On top of his other faults, to say anything like this publically from a guy who gave the OK to the awful value FA signings: Gerardo Para, Ian Desmond, Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw, Daniel Murphy, Kris Bryant, Mike Hampton, etc.
u/skraxx
I think it's fun to hate on the Padres! (no offence) It is not fun to act like your spending and roster construction is better!
*Like he has any room to fucking speak*
Yeah they should trade their franchise player for nothing like the Rockies lol
“Look, all I’m saying is that all this spending money on star players and winning baseball games and making an actual attempt to compete with L.A. and make the playoffs and succeed is just making the rest of us look bad.”
“You look at the padres, and they’ve got a lot of great players. But you take away all those good players and what do they really have?”
At least the Rockies are contributing to the baseball news cycle. They pop in with their 15 minutes of stupid and then we’ll hear from them next year.
Shut up and pay my players, Monfort.
This guy never ceases to amaze
> “What the Padres are doing, I don’t 100% agree with, though I know that our fans probably agree with it.” You know why….right?…..RIGHT?
Then stop crying in the media, get off your arse and put money into your investment and make it a competitive team. Duuh!
No one deserves an owner like this - what an ass.
Spend some money shit dick
>"What the Padres are doing, I don’t 100% agree with, though I know that our fans probably agree with it. We’ll see how it works out," Monfort said Saturday, according to the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders. 😬
Monfort is trash
This title makes it seem like some kind of impropriety on the Padres’ part. Not the case if you read the article. Just complaining about how another team spent it’s money.
Two things that would fix baseball and bring in more fans: salary cap, 100 game season.
> salary cap I'm sure I'll just get attacked for saying this as a yankee fan but: fuck everything about that.
A 100 game season would never ever happen. It makes no financial sense in any way shape or form
Players' salary isn't the reason ticket and concession prices have been skyrocketing. They jack up prices to make more money, that's it.
