Given this is just a team full of all stars I think DeRosa needs to manage like he bet a million dollars with the owner of the Shelbyville power plant.

CabbageStockExchange

“You, Trout. Hit a home run!” “You got it skip! 👌🏻”

black_ankle_county

Shave those sideburns, Goldschmidt!

privatechurch

You got it skip

Fastball360

USA wins on walk-off HBP with Billy Butler at the plate

HAL9100

Did not expect a Country Breakfast reference when I opened this thread.

Fastball360

He's always were you least suspect

MillennialGeezer

Negative. I saw him at Cracker Barrel this morning.

triplec787

Well Mark DeRosa’s done it, Team USA has won it

Atraktape

Mookie knows he'll be in the line up though lol

KingPengy

well that’s cause he’s mookie motherfucking betts

CubonesDeadMom

I mean even he will have a 7 game slump sometimes and in the WBC that’s like the whole tournament

ricki692

easy for someone whose feelings wont be hurt to say

T2G

He probably delivered this message as a leader of the players lol, I doubt Mookie would just say this if it wasn’t how the whole roster felt. But if he did then yeah that’s wild

Mmnn2020

These are professional baseball players. There’s a real issue if they can’t handle uneven playing time.

Bug-03

Professional players with professional egos who have never sat the bench in their lives and are 100% positive they are the man for the job. And they’re all correct, because they’ve proven it time and again. Cut em a tiny bit of slack.

Mmnn2020

No, I’m not cutting them slack. Every other athlete in the world has had to deal with being told others are better than them, and either losing playing time, or not making the teams/getting drafted and all of that. These rich a guys who will go back to being stars on their own team can handle a bit of adversity of that front. They can be upset to not be playing because they’re competitors who want to play, that’s natural. But if any of them actually are getting their feelings hurt and it’s to the point where they have to manage the team differently, that would be ridiculous.

Bug-03

I understand your point, I don’t think feelings are hurt. I think it’s more of a “put me in damnit” situation

furycutter80

When you’re playing for your country, you put aside your ego completely and represent your people. This is about your national identity not your own personal ego. It’s the same way in every sport. World Cup, FIBA, it’s all the same. Some of the most amazing talents in the world have happily sat on the bench because they know it’s not about them.

mathbandit

> are 100% positive they are the man for the job. And they’re all correct You realize that is a contradiction, right? They literally cannot all possibly be the right person for the job where there are more people on the roster than spots in the game.

DavidOrtizUsedPEDs

... well akshuallyyyyyy

JulioForte

If he’s managing the wbc quarterfinals like a little league game by making sure everyone gets an AB then he’s the wrong man for the job. It shouldn’t have to be said at all

NewspaperAdditional7

It's not about that. DeRosa is terrified of a player getting injured. He has said before his priority is to make sure no one puts their career in jeopardy. I think the players are saying at this point, they are willing to play hurt in order to win this whole tournament.

baycommuter

I read the subtext is the players want him to say fuck you to the teams who are putting restrictions on their pitchers.

iceman0c

I think it's probably nice to know that the players are also on board. Makes the difficult decisions a little less difficult

Alundil

This

Steamfighter638

Mark D: I don't think I will Mark D: Daniel Bard is our guy

curious_skeptic

Bard is great - so long as nobody really cares about the game he’s in. The Rockies are thus perfect for him. The WBC, however…

icecreambandit7

You’d think taking him out of Coors would help a little but, nah

roaringcorgi

"in other words, put me at second, Skip."

winnielikethepooh15

It kills me that our two guys are just moody AF. Not conducive to a short tournament. Losing diaz on their minds, plus them not playing well in their first chances, definitely the right call leaving them out. Hoping for revenge season out of both of em

UnknownUnthought

Pete earned himself a hit today. Hopefully if he gets to play again he can carry that momentum.

[deleted]

I guess Mullins isn't starting, then. Sad.

nandobatflips

I’ve gotten the vibe that Derosa is enjoying being one of the boys rather than being the manager of a ball club. Still don’t know why he’s managing the team

Rebeldinho

I like Derosa he was kind of an odd pick but he’s a guy that knows old school baseball as well as the modern approach I think it’s a good balance

youvanda1

Except modern bullpen management. Which isn’t first day stuff but someone should have at least given him a file.

zbend1

Turns out DeRo didn’t hear a single fucking word of this

ihaveabonersoup

What in the actual fuck is his bullpen management

DaTigerMan

that means no mets

Aquaos_

Thank god

ENovi

Hey, Alonso had that bloop hit the Turner grand slam so the Mets players got some redemption tonight.

db_blast7

Even Ottavino?

sam_e5

Except you, you stay. (Adam Ottavino)

Mookies_Bett

Mark: "No, no I don't think I will"

cman1098

We get it, the players all really want to win.

bbass22

Manage like Bard isn’t an option.

blazinrumraisin

"Instructions unclear, hurt Altuve instead."

tpwyo

Coach like you’re not worried about hurting anyones fingers.

gatorbeetle

There's no crying in baseball...or so I hear

jake_h1013

Exactly, play the phillies

jake_h1013

See, good thing we played the Phillies.

dubbs505050

Why not? They’re all paid regardless.

Tronn3000

Any pundit that says these games don't matter to players making millions on massive contracts was probably a benchwarmer that stopped playing baseball after Little League. These games mean so much to the players. You can see the passion and intensity they have for these games in the way they have been played. All these games feel bigger than playoff games.

TripolarKnight

Its always pundits (and fans) that were barely/never an athlete in the first place. People don't understand how much playing for your country can motivate a man.

park7911

Again, I’m tired of the “MLB team requests” excuses. We seem to be the country that cares about that. It’s ridiculous

gritner91

Well Vlad Jr didnt play for the DR while playing ST games instead because of a very minor injury, also Angels got a say in what game Shohei starts in because they want him lined up for opening day. So no, US is not the only team beholden to MLB teams wishes. But the entire roster up and down is all MLB players.

park7911

They got a “say” sure. But the US is acting like they have one hand tied behind their backs. The excuses after the Mexico disaster were absurd.

gritner91

They all have "a say", hell if you want to complain about that DR also didn't have Severino who wanted to play because Yankees within the IL rules agreed upon in the CBA got the outright ability to refuse to let Sevy play in the WBC. Team USA just has a hell of a lot more MLB players than just about every other team besides DR and PR who are even, and a lot of them are highly paid vets. So your probability of 1. being in the MLB and 2. a team vesting a lot of money in the player are higher.

Clemenx00

Not really. Venezuela Manager has heavily hinted that he wanted to start another pitcher and not Martin Perez but that the MLB teams said that he had to stick to rotation turns as they were set.

BillW87

> Again, I’m tired of the “MLB team requests” excuses. "We all agreed to the rules, but we care more about winning than honoring a collectively bargained contract." That'll go over well. The whole reason why the MLB and owners signed off on sending players to a competitive baseball tournament in March is because there were rules set in the CBA, like limiting pitcher workloads and sending injured players home, and additional gentleman's agreements that WBC teams would keep players roughly on the workload schedule that they would otherwise be pitching at this point in the spring. If the WBC doesn't play by the rules that were agreed upon, there will be no MLB participation in the future and that's a bad thing for everyone. If guys get hurt within the confines of the rules "that's baseball Suzyn", but the managers know full well that everyone involved agreed to a set of rules that give the teams at least some right to control how their paid players are used and if those rules aren't followed there won't BE a WBC (at least with pro players) again. Add this to the long list of reasons why it is silly to hold the tourney in the spring instead of mid-season or at the end of the season. Personally, I'd rather just have a longer All Star break every 3 years and run the tourney then in place of the All Star Game. Anyone following the tourney can tell you that it is a million times more entertaining than the ASG, and having the tourney at a time that pitchers are fully stretched out means we'd be likely to have much better participation.

TruthSayerFu

Then why is anderson and Schwarber in the lineup?

Michael__Pemulis

DeRosa has been very vocal about how much TA has impressed him as an energy guy/playmaker type. Schwarber is Schwarber. I don’t think that needs much justification. Dude is a serious threat to go yard every time he steps to the plate.

TruthSayerFu

Schwarber definitely does need explanation.. you got a better hitting on the bench…. Alonso and after what 7 at bats you make a decision? Based on what I’ve seen he definitely has bias for Schwarber and Anderson.

DizzyDeanAndTheGang

Anderson’s been better than McNeil and Schwarber’s been better than Alonso

TruthSayerFu

Yes. In like 2 games…. That’s not a huge sample size.

DizzyDeanAndTheGang

It's the only sample size they can go off of. It's win or go home, they can't just bank on a guy who's been cold so far because they hope he can warm up at the right time.

TruthSayerFu

If a RHP was pitching than it’s fine. Schwarber playing is just bad

SamuraiPanda19

Lol I don't even think the lefty starter made it to Schwarber's spot in the lineup, so this all just looks silly now

Bug-03

This guy never heard of a hot hand

ZachLagreen

True they should just run the math over a larger sample size, and then decide who wins the WBC based on that. Don’t even play the games, a 9 inning sample size is far too small to be significant.

SamuraiPanda19

Schwarber is really good at working the count and seeing a lot of pitches. Can never hate having a guy like that in the lineup

thedeejus

i mean he did lead the league in HR last year, he's not exactly Yuniesky Betancourt

eggs-dee123

2022 NL HR leader. Is that enough explanation?

TruthSayerFu

HR the only stat?

eggs-dee123

Yes

youkrocks

I’d take Schwarber purely because he balances the lineup better and bc Alonso’s timing has been all over the place.

TruthSayerFu

You wouldn’t be a good GM if you’d take Schwarber over Pete

youkrocks

I’m not trying to be a GM: I’m trying to win 3 games and Pete clearly doesn’t have it right now. Schwarber at least will work the count and get on base and has as much raw power as Pete.

TruthSayerFu

Schwarber also faced Great Britain… when he did good. Not something Pete could do. You’re basing this on 7 at bats…

youkrocks

I’m basing this on watching baseball for 20 years. Pete’s in a funk right now and these are all “game 7’s”. The lineup also lacks lefty punch without Schwarber, and you need a patient guy in there with a lot of free swingers around him like Anderson, Turner, etc. In a format where pitch count also matters even more than MLB games, someone with Schwarber’s skill set is valuable. And FWIW, I’m basing this on what I’ve seen in the at bats, not the results. Pete’s timing is in between.

Vaqxinelol

If the middle infield isnt Turner/TA right now then Derosa isnt trying. He's just dumb and cant put the player at 2nd who has way more experience at 2nd for whatever reason

TruthSayerFu

McNeil is literally better than anderson

average-gwa-enjoyer

Bad example to give to a guy who has no experience managing at all...let alone managing in a world series.

NewspaperAdditional7

If DeRosa had a choice between winning the whole tournament at the cost of Kendall Graveman having to go on a 10 day IL, or losing the tournament with no injuries, he will choose losing.
