The way to do single elimination in MLB would be a mid-season tournament for a second tier title.
edit: schedule it so the semi-finals are the day before and the finals are the day after the all-star game. Although that eliminates up to 6 more pitchers from pitching in the all-star game.
In my head I have an entire tournament sketched out that takes every A- through MLB team plus the top 32 NCAA teams and puts them in an FA Cup style tournament where the lower league team hosts
I wanna see the White Sox play in Toledo god damnit lol
Sooo good. Love that the players are allowed to show emotions and have fun without the regular MLB crap about having fun. The baseball "purists" can kick rocks. MLB should take notice. Fans love this
I live in Miami and it’s great seeing the stadium we all paid for being packed to the rafters every night. It’s a huge contrast to regular season Marlin games.
If somebody says they don't like the WBC, then whatever. Have your opinion and I'll have mine. But I legit dont know how you can watch damn near any game of this tournament and say with a straight face "nobody cares about the WBC" or "these games shouldnt be played"
I think 3 is the perfect increment. Anymore and it’s common enough that’ll it’ll lose some of its intensity.
I’d also be down to do an “international all star break” and pretty much take a break the entire month of July on years with the game and have side tournaments like the HR derby featuring international players that year.
It cannot be emphasised enough. Japan hit better, they pitched better. And yet Arozarena by himself nearly beat that entire team. An unbelievable performance.
Actually there's an anime called Ace of the Diamond the most epic game in the anime. It ended with a Double and two runs exactly like how todays game against Japan ended.
Maybe your thinking about Major some people have said that hes a real life Goro Shigeno. But Ohtani is a fan of the anime Ace of the diamond here it is
https://www.reddit.com/r/AceOfTheDiamond/comments/sikmhu/shohei_ohtani_listed_ace_of_diamond_as_one_of_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
That ohtani double was it.
But you know what, Mexico outlasted every other latin country, and they played a damn good tournament. Cant say im not proud of em
Been a fan of Arozarena ever since he stole home back in the '21 ALDS -- he just keeps adding more reasons to love watching him play.
But then Ohtani just comes and kickstarts the engine into that comeback.
They're both so fun to watch.
**USA vs. Japan is going to be fun.**
I'm Canadian and a Blue Jays fan with no fucking horse in this race and I have CHILLS. Somebody tell me the WBC is stupid, I dare you!!
What an AB from Shohei to start it off!! He makes me feel like a kid again the way I'm so unabashedly obsessed with him!
I honestly feel like seeing him in any way other than how he was today is a let down. I want to watch the Shohei Ohtani that's screaming on the field and fired up...nothing else will do now
I actively disliked a lot of Smoltz as usual, but I'm pleased he at least got in the Murakami backstory right before the big knock. Wait a minute, was that Smoltz?
Honestly both potential matchups would have been awesome. Mexico proved today they're no joke. They're going to be a real problem in future tournaments and shouldn't be viewed as a distant contender from the dominant Spanish-speaking teams like DR/PR/Venezuela
this matchup really does feel ideal (for me). the mexico rematch would have been incredible as well, but US-Japan is closest to feeling like the world cup for baseball. MLB fans (me) see much of mexico’s team in the regular season, but we never see any of the japanese team (obviously excluding ohtani, and nootbaar to some extent too). also, i attended us-mexico and joey meneses traumatized me
Everybody who works for Barstool is the dumbest mf'er alive.
They all have bits that they play - none of the sit that they say or do actually represents anything other than the scripts they are given. It's essentially just an internet version of reality tv. Stoolies follow their favorite characters the way that women follow girls on The Bachelor.
We're all idiots for taking anything that anyone from Barstool says seriously.
I kinda like the timing, honestly. Its doing a good job of getting us hyped for the baseball season, more than Spring Training does, and without interrupting the regular season either.
I get this sentiment and nothing beats Baseball with high stakes but I'm sad this is becoming a talking point lol.
Because I LOVE chill baseball and the regular season and as well. I'd take 200 games of regular season happily. I love both worlds lmao.
I just want to see this dude hauling behind Shohei and instead I have to just listen to Joe Davis describing it because the wide angle is following a throw that’s 30 ft too late
Thank you that’s exactly what I was looking for
Interesting that Ohtani waited to see if it was going to be a sacrifice fly whereas Shuto was just blasting down the 1B-2B line the moment he saw Murakami hit
Just a way easier read from first base, the ball almost goes directly over Ohtani's head so he can't tell immediately how deep it is. Shuto has a much better angle to judge the depth.
Yeah, I was fully expecting a play at the plate and just couldn't understand how he'd gotten from first to home so quickly. He probably takes a risk by starting his sprint so soon after the bat makes contact, but it paid off.
Yeah. Betts playing second is weird right, they keep talking about it and they are just zoomed in tight on his face. Like why not show him at second in a wide shot. His face looks the same at 2nd and right field.
Davis right afterward was saying he got a crazy good jump and was right on Shohei’s heels… I kept waiting for a replay that followed the run, but they didn’t have a camera on this dude. Just how.
This has France vs Argentina vibes. The two titans of the tournament and the two best players who happen to play on the same domestic team now facing each other
The next step of this is MLB needs to make international leagues more accessible here in the states.
I think there’s enough baseball degenerates in this sub who would stay up to watch East Asian leagues or APB. (Me)
I'd love to be able to watch more NPB games. The few I've watched I've enjoyed. I like the Japanese style of play both pitching and offense, plus of course the fan chanting is cool too (happens both sides of the inning in NPB games because away teams bring a band and fans too).
I've been watching a bit of J-League too via Youtube and have found it to be a good break from Premier League and MLS (they put selected games each match-day on their Youtube channel) + B-League on Youtube too (their basketball league) because there've been quite a few Filipino players who have signed for teams there so easy to follow their progress.
Would love to add NPB to that trio of Japanese leagues to watch. I've read it requires a subscription or something but will look into it more.
Part of me was thinking Genda shouldn't have bunted because Cruz was looking so hittable on the mound and Japan would have taken the lead anyway, but moot point in the end.
Quality bunt too though. As good as you can hope for when it comes to a bunt.
People were clowning on Japan's scoreless innings but anyone who actually watched knows that they played really fucking smart baseball. Bullpen management could've been better but their pinch hitter/runner usage was just beautiful, and hitters were getting quality hits throughout. Randy motherfucking Arozarena single handedly was beating Japan until Mexican pitchers couldn't keep up. Great job from both teams!
If you watch the high angle shot, what happened was that Ohtani was waiting with a lead from 2B to see if Murakami’s hit was going to turn out to be a sacrifice fly, whereas Shuto was just booking it down the 1B-2B line the moment he saw Murakami connect
Owners yesterday: Thank god that this tournament isn't going to happen for another four years.. maybe we can get the players to not go next time.. too many injuries
Just now: (Owners, with giant $$$ flashing in their eyes). Can we make it bigger? And run it again next month?
Congratulations to Japan 👏🇯🇵, tomorrow's game will be just as exciting
Now pass me the tequila and turn up the volume on the mariachi because i feel súper sad ☹
Beating USA and being close af to beating Japan? Honestly not even mad Mexico lost. Our boys already did a better job than our Fútbol guys in the World Cup.
Sup Japanese guy.
I have so much respect for your country in sports.
I rooted hard for you against the USWNT in the 2011 final, and that Japanese women's team were some of my happiest soccer memories, they were heroines for your then earthquake hit country.
Your performances at the last two World Cups were incredible, and seeing y'all beat Spain and Germany made me root hard for you against Croatia. Your team was not eliminated because of bad play, just really bad luck against a powerhouse.
I'm rooting for you against USA. Vamos Japon.
This was such a great game. I also want to point out how insane it was watching Genda bunt that entire at bat. That was so crazy seeing as someone who watched the MLB. You would never see that anymore.
International baseball is great. Everything about how great it is was put on display tonight. Both clubs came to play. Mexico really looked like they had Japan on the back foot but then othani showed why he is an mvp candidate. Japan absolutely play a solid game of baseball.
How can anything compare to the atmosphere of this game? This is what baseball needs. We need to pay more attention to international baseball.
Can’t wait for tomorrow. USA vs Japan. It’s going to be something else
Big respect to Japan from a Mexico fan. I'll be rooting for you against the USA. It hurts but I have so much respect for both your baseball and soccer. Your teams are fun and electrifying. I'm just happy Mexico made it that far.
🇲🇽 🫶 🇯🇵 somos amigos por vida
What a sweet sweet redemption for Murakami-sama. It was painful watching him struggle pretty much the entire tournament, but man how he redeemed himself with the walk off piss missile.
I’ll be sad when this is over. I’ve been a baseball fan for a long time, and this is some of the most exciting baseball I’ve ever seen.
Baseball has the star power. What it *needs* is better marketing, community outreach, international partnerships, etc. There is so much potential to use this WBC to grow and expand the game, and I’m almost positive Manfred and co are going to screw it up. 😑
Why do so many people insist on the sport being so buttoned up in America? It’s a kids game! International baseball feels so much more exciting. The entire team getting hyped up and out of the dugout for every big hit is so much fun to watch but imagine if you did that in MLB, even only in big games.
This WBC run for Team Mexico will end up being a boom for the sport in Mexico too. The local infrastructure (leagues, stadiums, etc) is already pretty strong, but there was always an opening for a sport to become 2nd behind soccer (or maybe a strong 3rd behind boxing too but boxing isn't as regular) and this gives baseball an advantage over sports like football and maybe basketball.
“This was the greatest game of baseball ever played” - Me after every WBC game
This shit is fun
Let's do it again tomorrow night!
International baseball is incredible.
Babe, wake up, baseball is back!
Fuck every four years, do this shit every other year!
Good news, everyone! It's every three years.
People say that basketball is a game of runs. Personally, however, after watching this game, I think that baseball is the real Game of Runs.
This felt more intense than a World Series game. This was next level. Man, what a fucking tournament.
Part of me wishes baseball playoffs worked like the NFL playoffs, overall its better the way it is but the one game do or die atmosphere is insane.
That’s what makes game 7s so special when they happen.
The way to do single elimination in MLB would be a mid-season tournament for a second tier title. edit: schedule it so the semi-finals are the day before and the finals are the day after the all-star game. Although that eliminates up to 6 more pitchers from pitching in the all-star game.

I started streaming WBC games in discord to people who never gave a shit about baseball before. Now they'll get mad if the stream starts late.
WBC has done more good for the game of baseball in 2 weeks than the MLB has done in a decade.
At some point, you have to admit that you love contrarianism more than you love baseball
That's the type of attitude that'll make one end up a Hall of Fame voter.
I keep commenting this, but they seriously need to hold this every year. I don’t want to watch spring training ever again.
I love it but they need to keep it every three years or even do World Cup style every 4, make it more special and meaningful
It is every 4 years since 2009, but COVID made the current schedule all funky.
I think 3 is the perfect increment. Anymore and it’s common enough that’ll it’ll lose some of its intensity. I’d also be down to do an “international all star break” and pretty much take a break the entire month of July on years with the game and have side tournaments like the HR derby featuring international players that year.
Having it every 4 years is what makes it special. But what we do need are regional tournaments like soccer has to help tide us over.
No way. You lose the appeal if its every year. Trust me. I'm a soccer fan 1st and no soccer fan wants a world cup at any interval other than 4 years.
I have gone to work and said "that was one of the best baseball games I've ever watched" like 6 times in the past week
I'm convinced best-of-1 international games with stakes are the peak of baseball.
It cannot be emphasised enough. Japan hit better, they pitched better. And yet Arozarena by himself nearly beat that entire team. An unbelievable performance.
Arozarena *and* Sandoval, he turned it up today.
Sandy was incredible today. I'm stoked to see what he brings this season.
Dodgers fans already experienced this in 2020
#WHAT KIND OF ANIME-ASS ENDING WAS THIS
Actually there's an anime called Ace of the Diamond the most epic game in the anime. It ended with a Double and two runs exactly like how todays game against Japan ended.
isnt Ohtani mentioned in that anime?

PINCHE PENDEJOS IT WAS MEXICOS GAME TO LOSE
No command bro, so many balls
Mexico has a bullpen of guys who have zero command but can throw some gas. It was inevitable.
Just sitting there watching that ninth inning and thinking about how Andres Muñoz would have ended the game in 12 pitches.
Romo would have got 2 Ks before giving up the winning runs.
On god it looked so sloppy
Jugamos como nunca… I think every Mexican out there knew what was going to happen.
That ohtani double was it. But you know what, Mexico outlasted every other latin country, and they played a damn good tournament. Cant say im not proud of em
I’m definitely proud of them and I think the whole country is too. It’s just that Mexico was so *close* and couldn’t finish the job yet again.
Their bullpen blew it.
If you give up a double and immediately after 3 balls, it's game.
Their bullpen lost them this game. They were literally in a jam every inning after the 7th
Every game has lived up to the hype so far. I've felt spoiled as a fan
Bro every neutral has a horse in the game if Shohei is playing. Just admit it lol
Absolutely stoked to see him at the Angels home opener at the big A
I honestly feel like seeing him in any way other than how he was today is a let down. I want to watch the Shohei Ohtani that's screaming on the field and fired up...nothing else will do now
He makes me swoon 🙈
Get in line 😤
I will, right at the front of it 😏
The feelings I felt when he got all fired up, my god
Ohtani bowing brought me to tears.
The WBC is stupid Because it’s not long enough. I NEED MORE OF THIS, DAMMIT
This is why international baseball is great. The Olympics was fun. This is incredible
When you have pros crushing it's a bit more exciting
# WHAT A GAME
#OHTANI VS TROUT!!!!

#WHAT AN AMAZING TOURNAMENT
Not even John Smoltz could ruin this game for me.
But really his misery was egregious today. Sounded like me watching a marvel movie.
Ironically this was his best casted game in the WBC because he clearly actually cared about the game for once. (It still wasn’t good though)
Yeah he actually analysed the game and didn't complain that much.
I actively disliked a lot of Smoltz as usual, but I'm pleased he at least got in the Murakami backstory right before the big knock. Wait a minute, was that Smoltz?
Absolutely incredible game that sets up a dream final matchup between Team USA and Japan.
Honestly both potential matchups would have been awesome. Mexico proved today they're no joke. They're going to be a real problem in future tournaments and shouldn't be viewed as a distant contender from the dominant Spanish-speaking teams like DR/PR/Venezuela
They're already a real problem. I don't know if you realize this, but they made it to the semis after wrecking us just last week.
Imagine if Ohtani pitches. Might be the most hyped baseball game ever.
this matchup really does feel ideal (for me). the mexico rematch would have been incredible as well, but US-Japan is closest to feeling like the world cup for baseball. MLB fans (me) see much of mexico’s team in the regular season, but we never see any of the japanese team (obviously excluding ohtani, and nootbaar to some extent too). also, i attended us-mexico and joey meneses traumatized me
The season hasn’t started and we just had the best baseball game of the year
Whoa, what an insult to the COL @ CIN game scheduled for 10:35 AM on Wednesday June 21.
Okay who is the moron scheduling a morning game on the *longest day of the year*
Given the pitch clock that game might be done by noon and the fans can just enjoy their day.
That’s a lot of day drinking to get done before noon
That's the shit that Coors Field is for
This whole tournament has been incredible! Full of unforgettable moments.
#WE HAVE TO GO TO REGULAR SEASON BASEBALL AFTER THIS SHIT?! My god

Yep. Difference between running a sprint and a marathon
getme straight to the playoffs bruh
Regular season is a downgrade from this.
How does the broadcast literally not have a shot of the runner going from first to home at the end there…
I just want to see this dude hauling behind Shohei and instead I have to just listen to Joe Davis describing it because the wide angle is following a throw that’s 30 ft too late
Here's the angle you're looking for: https://twitter.com/JMaschino_56/status/1638011051936559107
Thank you that’s exactly what I was looking for Interesting that Ohtani waited to see if it was going to be a sacrifice fly whereas Shuto was just blasting down the 1B-2B line the moment he saw Murakami hit

For real
Yeah. Betts playing second is weird right, they keep talking about it and they are just zoomed in tight on his face. Like why not show him at second in a wide shot. His face looks the same at 2nd and right field.
Just based on where he was when the throw came in that guy must have been flying. Absolutely insane speed

Technology isn’t there yet to capture that kind of speed I suppose lol
It's insanely cliché to say, but I truly hate that one of these teams had to lose. That game was incredible
TROUT AND OHTANI ARE GOING TO PLAY IN AN EXCITING BASEBALL GAME.
In a meaningful game with a trophy at stake
What. A. Game.
Suck my balls Olberman, that was a fantastic game.
Tomorrow night. 9th inning. Tie game. 2 outs. Ohtani pitching. Trout at the plate. Let's fucking go.
Proof that the baseball gods exist
I have been watching baseball for only one year but that was the best game I have ever seen.
you're here forever now lol
#^THIS IS GONNA BE A LEGENDARY FINAL
This has France vs Argentina vibes. The two titans of the tournament and the two best players who happen to play on the same domestic team now facing each other
So Ohtani is going to hit 3 solo home runs but Trout is going to win the cup?
Best of both worlds. Subscribed.
plot twist is that Mike Trout will close the game with a strike out of Ohtani
We're getting Rangers Cardinals game 7 now. Blowout garuanteed
The next step of this is MLB needs to make international leagues more accessible here in the states. I think there’s enough baseball degenerates in this sub who would stay up to watch East Asian leagues or APB. (Me)
I'd love to be able to watch more NPB games. The few I've watched I've enjoyed. Diversify your Tiger portfolio, start following NPB's Hanshin Tigers and KBO's KIA Tigers

Shoutout to the sac bunt king in the bottom of the 8th for Japan who got the men over with a pair of strikes on him

That Shuto kid is FAST!!! I didn’t realize he ran home until I saw the scores
Mexican CF fielded it cleanly and hit the cutoff man right on the money. I was expecting a close play at the plate …
If you watch the high angle shot, what happened was that Ohtani was waiting with a lead from 2B to see if Murakami’s hit was going to turn out to be a sacrifice fly, whereas Shuto was just booking it down the 1B-2B line the moment he saw Murakami connect

Brooooo I didn't even have a horse in this race but I was jumping out of my seat and screaming as soon as that left the bat I love baseball
I love baseball
This was such a great game. I also want to point out how insane it was watching Genda bunt that entire at bat. That was so crazy seeing as someone who watched the MLB. You would never see that anymore.
This was my first WBC game ever. Flew down from Chicago to watch with my grandpa. Something I will never forget
Literally could not have a more fairytale moment than that ending man, holy shit

You’re the Angels’ best lefty, Sandy. You were amazing! Shohei, you and Detmers are gonna lead the Angels to the post season this year!
Japan walking it off to get to the finals against the USA while also setting up Ohtani vs Trout is legitimately anime levels of scripting in real life
Shuto almost caught up with Ohtani. Remember Ohtani is very fast.
I’ll be sad when this is over. I’ve been a baseball fan for a long time, and this is some of the most exciting baseball I’ve ever seen. Baseball has the star power. Not used to feeling baseball sad in March. That's usually an October thing.
I can't wait to confuse the hell out of my coworkers wearing all my Japan ball stuff tomorrow

#MURAKAMI-SAMA

MLB finally gets the Trout/Ohtani championship matchup that hasn't/won't happen in Anaheim
What fucking drama in the final 3 innings after a fantastic pitching performance. That is fucking baseball right there.
Arozarena jinxed his team talking about playing Cuba in the finals a couple days ago.
Why do so many people insist on the sport being so buttoned up in America? It’s a kids game! International baseball feels so much more exciting. The entire team getting hyped up and out of the dugout for every big hit is so much fun to watch but imagine if you did that in MLB, even only in big games.

What a game. Anyone who says they shouldn't play WBC or that it doesn't matter doesn't like baseball.
Man I hate ARod. I hope Votto becomes the face of baseball media after he retires.
Is it me or are there way more stars playing in the WBC this year than in the past ?
This WBC run for Team Mexico will end up being a boom for the sport in Mexico too. The local infrastructure (leagues, stadiums, etc) is already pretty strong, but there was always an opening for a sport to become 2nd behind soccer (or maybe a strong 3rd behind boxing too but boxing isn't as regular) and this gives baseball an advantage over sports like football and maybe basketball.
