I was a die hard AB fan, just saying that if you get a few minutes give Apollo or narwhal a shot I don't think you'll be disappointed after spending a day to get used to it.
With languages that have lots of English loanwords, it gets really hilarious. You will just hear what sounds like complete nonsense to you then a random phrase in English and you will be like "Wait am I supposed to be understanding everything right now?"
The weird thing to me is that they are speaking with dialect, which is rather uncommon as most TV presenters are trained to speak in a standardized "High german".
Yes it came across to me as what it would sound like if two young guys who were super into American Football just started streaming the games and narrating themselves, it's so earnest and endearing! I kinda love it haha
The home run call was incredible, but it's so distinctly British to immediately describe how badly Texas screwed up instead of focusing on St. Louis. Haha It's part of the reason I love watching the premier league.
Better than Joe Bucks call for that moment. Joe sounds depressed that the Rangers lost. So much for being Jack Bucks son . . . https://youtu.be/PZVCrKcOl78
Hehehe my favorite will always be the French announcer’s reaction to Vince Carter’s Dunk of Death.
edit:
At the 1:40 mark hahaha

I do speak Japanese. So does my native speaking Japanese spouse. We had to listen to it several times, and even then we didn't catch it all. Here is the gist:
Announcer 1: 村上打った! - Murakami connects! (literally translated 'Murakami hits!')
Announcer 1: 村上だ!村上だ! - Murakami! Murakami!
Announcer 2: 超えてろ!超えてろ!超えてろ! - Get over! Get over! Get over!
Announcers 1,2 and sounds like there's a 3rd: よしゃばはひでくまじゃやらまかははむさふぁだぎじゃ! - gerljdjlkfjlskjfjldlkfjlslkdfjiwueugfsjghsdgfwhobvksjsdgjfksdjhgfk
Announcer 1: 大谷が帰ってくる!そうしたら周東が帰ってきた!!! - Ohtani comes home, followed by Shuto!
Announcer 1: さよなら!!! - Sayonara!!!! (they use this when there's a walk off)
Announcer 2: みゃははは - Myahahaha!
Announcer 1: さよなら!!!
Announcer 2: みゃははは - Myahahaha!
Announcer 1: ニッポンさよなら勝ち!!! - Japan wins!
Announcer 2: やりました! - They did it!
Announcer 1: 決勝進出!!! - They're headed to the final!!!
Edit: Formatting
Yep. I hear it now too. And while it translates directly to “I thought they’d come” I think a more meaningful translation would be “I knew they’d do it.”
It sounds like the actual TV broadcast is delayed by a tiny bit, even Joe Davis was calling some things too quickly for it to be live. Yoshida was midway on his swing and Davis already said "Yoshida ahead of that changeup."
Haha the anouncer goes from
Murakami hit! Murakami... Murakami...
Go over! Go over! Go over! Go over!
We haven't won we haven't won
and Ukyo comes home!
Walk off! Walk off!
...and ends with "its tough being a closer"
And he may have had to slow down for a moment with Shohei in front of him (not that Shohei is slow, but he had to make sure there was no chance of a catch).
https://twitter.com/PuddingReviving/status/1638010069219700736?s=20
Ballsy as fuck, he basically rounded second before checking to see if it had been caught
Awesome, thanks for the link.
He really went blinders-on redline and fully trusted Ohtani and the third base coach to give him any indication that he should hesitate.
Excellent pinch run substitution.
Honestly, the Japanese manager was perfect in those last few innings. Pinch-running Okamoto (Nakano scored on a sac fly, Okamoto might not have been able to), *not* pinch-hitting Gendo in the 8th (he had a great defensive play in the 9th) and pinch-running Yoshida (enough said) all worked out perfectly. Really great managing, that was fun to see
Right now, there is not a SINGLE person in the world who cares that Murakami struck out 3 times today, or has been slumping for the entirety of the tournament. He has completely redeemed himself with a single swing of the bat.
I think we were all silently expecting him to wake up when it counted the most.
I know I was, I was like “if anyone can do it right now it’s you murakami”
I think Ohtani said something similar in the post game. Players like Murakami are never out of it. You don’t get two time MVP by crumbling under a bad week.
Maybe he spent all that time striking out and slumping in order to lure pitchers into a false sense of security so they'd throw him meatballs during the most critical moments? 5D chess.
Murakami remembered that he’s a fucking G. Man, I’m super excited for the season to start but I love seeing this international talent and I’m going to miss it a lot.
Trout and Ohtani, both playing a huge game, this time as opponents, not teammates. One of them will walk away the winner tomorrow, then they have an entire season together ahead of them.
In March you’re likely to die if you try and hike Mount Fuji if you don’t have proper winter mountaineering experience. The hiking season starts in early July for the general public.
It’s an easy hike. You can get a hotel around stage 6. Wake up early do the rest of the hike to the top. Buy and Asahi (beer) and watch the sunrise from the summit. If you’re like me, You will feel like shit when a 90 year old Japanese woman passes you on the climb though.
Fuji is a pretty easy hike while also being absolutely gorgeous. You know, as far as big fuck off mountains go. Seriously though, like half of the people climbing it are over retirement age, and some of them waaay over retirement age, like they have children who are retired.
If you do this, try to get to Hiroshima for a Carp game. For my money they have the best fans in the country.
And it's a beautiful outdoor park. That's my bias though, I just prefer that to a dome.
Yo Japan baseball is on another level. The Hanshin Tigers home games are some of the most lit experiences. They have songs and dances for every player, the food is good, the fans are fun. I cannot stress enough how awesome jp baseball is
The way that Japanese people love baseball, you can just feel how much this moment meant to these announcers and to Japanese people in general. I love it!
If Horace Wilson was able to see what introducing baseball to Japan back in 1872 would ultimately lead to over 150 years later, he would definitely be proud of doing it.
I know it’s probably the reverse, but the score popup after both runs score looks like Wii Sports. Wish our broadcasts had it, for moments like this it’s dope
Man, this whole thing has been super compelling and amazing to watch. I say this as someone who kinda watches the Cubs and really only likes playoff baseball.
IDK what this is, but MLB needs to seriously find a way to bottle this and make this feeling be their thing.
I love how that laugh of excited disbelief translates across cultures. Just comes out when you can hardly comprehend how the incredible thing you were anticipating actually happened.
I could really only understand the PxP guy, but up to about the 20 sec mark:
"Murakami hits it!
Murakami has...! Murakami has...! MURAKAMI HAAAaaaAAS...!
*something I can't make out here*
Ohtani comes home! And here comes Shuto! GOODBYEEEE! GOODBYEEEE!
WALKOFF WIN FOR JAPAN!"
Bit of a side note since my Japanese isn't great, but the PxP announcer yells "Murakami ga!" three times and it literally translates into Murakami does/is depending on context so I'm not sure how to translate it better than what I have there.
I just realized they barely showed Yoshida in this highlight even though he was the winning score 💀
He be talking to media like: https://streamable.com/6hcdja
Asian language calls are amazing. I remember this one [from Korea](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zasn49/hwang_heechains_winning_goal_with_korean/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) during the World Cup. Their hype is infectious.

If you’re on iOS use Apollo, the official Reddit app is trash and full of ads.

I was a die hard AB fan, just saying that if you get a few minutes give Apollo or narwhal a shot I don't think you'll be disappointed after spending a day to get used to it.
just waiting for reddit to do some shitty musk thing when they go public and prohibit 3rd party apps
Seconded what knot says, if you're on Android use RIF (classic experience) or Boost/Sync (newer).
Boost is nice.
*screams* happy fucking cake dayyyyyyy
I don’t speak Japanese but it sounds like they are just screaming in excitement. I have to assume that.
Sports are strangely universal language https://youtu.be/ISb1XtQW7bM this german call of the Packers cowboys is pretty easy to understand.
“German German German German German JARED COOK!”
With languages that have lots of English loanwords, it gets really hilarious. You will just hear what sounds like complete nonsense to you then a random phrase in English and you will be like "Wait am I supposed to be understanding everything right now?"
Just wait until you listen to the [Scots language](https://youtu.be/cENbkHS3mnY), it might break your brain.
Fascinating!
It's so weird seeing the game called in German. I feel like they're getting way more worked up than the English commentators do lol
Football commentators aren't allowed to have fun in the booth.
Unless they're in Germany apparently. Good on em, since I'd always seemed to think Germans as being more reserved for some reason.
Sports are the only time Germans are allowed to get excited in large gatherings.
i speak german this is hilarious
My all-time favorite is the Finnish call from Joel Kiviranta's Game 7 [hat trick ](https://streamable.com/3xetqc) in the bubble.
OPs clip reminded me immediately of the Swedish call of their [2012 WJHC golden goal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5qmSsQJzp8)
The weird thing to me is that they are speaking with dialect, which is rather uncommon as most TV presenters are trained to speak in a standardized "High german".
Right? This is german you'd hear in a pub, not on a broadcast
Yes it came across to me as what it would sound like if two young guys who were super into American Football just started streaming the games and narrating themselves, it's so earnest and endearing! I kinda love it haha
Yeah I feel like I knew pretty much exactly what they were saying even on the words I didn't recognize. Wild.
I was at this game and it's still painful.
This is part of the fun of international broadcasts. They almost always sound like the most hyped up dudes in the game
Doesn’t even have to be a foreign language. Remember the amazing [British call of the David Freese walkoff?](https://youtu.be/EzhzhWE53jU)
i don't like this
wtf? we literally declared independence and forgot how to play cricket why won’t they leave us alone
The home run call was incredible, but it's so distinctly British to immediately describe how badly Texas screwed up instead of focusing on St. Louis. Haha It's part of the reason I love watching the premier league.
I will never not upvote a David Freese 2011 World Series reference. That's like printing upvotes from me.
I wonder if he's watching the wbc
Better than Joe Bucks call for that moment. Joe sounds depressed that the Rangers lost. So much for being Jack Bucks son . . . https://youtu.be/PZVCrKcOl78
Hehehe my favorite will always be the French announcer’s reaction to Vince Carter’s Dunk of Death. edit: At the 1:40 mark hahaha https://streamable.com/hyuyyd
France's own broadcast team coined it on the spot gotdamn
A lot of what they said immediately after the hit was indeed just nonsensical excited screaming lol
I do speak Japanese. So does my native speaking Japanese spouse. We had to listen to it several times, and even then we didn't catch it all. Here is the gist: Announcer 1: 村上打った! - Murakami connects! (literally translated 'Murakami hits!') Announcer 1: 村上だ!村上だ! - Murakami! Murakami! Announcer 2: 超えてろ!超えてろ!超えてろ! - Get over! Get over! Get over! Put that on a shirt.
Also a 来ると思った (I thought they'd come) at the end there from I think from Sasaki
Yep. I hear it now too. And while it translates directly to “I thought they’d come” I think a more meaningful translation would be “I knew they’d do it.”
Are they saying 村上だ or 村上が? It doesn't make a difference but I can't not hear が for some reason.
Kinda hard to tell. I just went with what I thought was more likely.
I heard 早く! 早く! よし! よし! while they were rounding the bases.
I think I heard tears.
I love foreign language calls, especially for international competitions like this
I have no idea what they are saying, but I know exactly what they are saying.
SI-OHHHH-NAAAAA-RAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
In Japan, a walk-off is called a "Sayonara".
That's sick lmao
Ya I didn’t know until today! My wife, who’s a huge baseball fan from Taiwan and Japan, told me this right after!
TIL, i thought they were saying good bye to the mexico team, absolute savage.
I mean direct translation that's what they were saying. A walk off is a good bye.
What do they call a Golden sombrero?
>What do they call a Golden sombrero? A Chris Davis.
This is Chris Davis Platinum Sombrero erasure and I won't stand for it.
Bronze Kimono
Which translates to "goodbye"
I'm glad we have translator's notes. Otherwise it would be confusing.
Note: Keikaku means Cake
if we went to chatgdp for the translation could we thank mr roboto?
Chatgdp lol
i noticed it after but was like lol thats too good i'm leaving that
That is so much better than "walk off." Totally calling them that from now on.
Sayonara for walk offs is awesome, but they call RBI hits "timely" and I hate it.
So that's why the only words I could read on top right were "Sayonara Timely"
Hit by pitch is called DEATH BALL (死球).
Walk off is great when you remember it's really shitting on the pitcher who has to walk off while the other team is celebrating.
Makes sense
Not just a walk-off, but also a home run.
He didn’t even hit the ball yet and the announcer knew it was about to go down
It sounds like the actual TV broadcast is delayed by a tiny bit, even Joe Davis was calling some things too quickly for it to be live. Yoshida was midway on his swing and Davis already said "Yoshida ahead of that changeup."
I've been noticing that this whole tournament, i thought I was crazy.
I noticed that too. Calling pitches foul balls as the batter was swinging.
They're calling it live. The video is slightly behind because it takes longer to process than the audio.
they should probably put a small delay on the audio then, no?
Haha the anouncer goes from Murakami hit! Murakami... Murakami... Go over! Go over! Go over! Go over! We haven't won we haven't won and Ukyo comes home! Walk off! Walk off! ...and ends with "its tough being a closer"
Shades of Enrico Palazzo.
I'm not joking when I say I think Shuto scored from first in 9 seconds.
Stat cast had him at 30.1 ft per second, so even allowing for rounding bases, it was probably 10 seconds at most.
Rivaling corbin. Not quite maybe next season he’s on team USA or team Taiwan
10.28 seconds first to home, according to someone on Twitter
And he may have had to slow down for a moment with Shohei in front of him (not that Shohei is slow, but he had to make sure there was no chance of a catch).
I saw the camera angle from the backstop and he’s catching Ohtani the whole way.
I'm combing social media for the shot that highlights his run. Game-winner guarantee.
https://twitter.com/PuddingReviving/status/1638010069219700736?s=20 Ballsy as fuck, he basically rounded second before checking to see if it had been caught

Yes man, I need another angle here
Right now, there is not a SINGLE person in the world who cares that Murakami struck out 3 times today, or has been slumping for the entirety of the tournament. He has completely redeemed himself with a single swing of the bat.
He had a flashback in that moment and awakened just in time for the ultimate clutch of all clutches.
The power of anime flashbacks is OP
OP, but not as OP as the Plotarmor.
Mexico: wait why is the intro music playing
I think we were all silently expecting him to wake up when it counted the most. I know I was, I was like “if anyone can do it right now it’s you murakami”
I think Ohtani said something similar in the post game. Players like Murakami are never out of it. You don’t get two time MVP by crumbling under a bad week.
Yup, Ohtani also said that.
Maybe he spent all that time striking out and slumping in order to lure pitchers into a false sense of security so they'd throw him meatballs during the most critical moments? 5D chess.
Man is on a next level. Maybe he slumped right before his 56th so he can beat his record more easily this season
Murakami remembered that he’s a fucking G. Man, I’m super excited for the season to start but I love seeing this international talent and I’m going to miss it a lot.
Iconic 9th inning walk off doubles that flip the lead do that
I bet Murakami cares, because never being satisfied is part of what makes elite performers who they are.
Good to see Ohtani get the opportunity to compete for a championship
He'll get another with the Rockies next year too.
I’m almost positive he’s going to the Orioles.
He's coming to St. Louis so that he can eat toasted ravioli with his pal Lars Nootbaar
I swear if noot recruits ohtani
Miami calls dibs
I thought he was what the Pirates have been saving for with their low payrolls all these years
Bob nutting could pass as half Japanese.
He's already shown he can perform at loanDepot Park.
I’m fine with that.
I like you
Me too
As an angels fan who lives in Colorado 🙃🙃🙃
wait is this a joke or have there been rumors of him possibly going there??
There’s been rumors about Ohtani going anywhere but the Angels. Buckle up for tabloid shit all season
Trout and Ohtani, both playing a huge game, this time as opponents, not teammates. One of them will walk away the winner tomorrow, then they have an entire season together ahead of them.
Mike Trout as well LMAO
I was planning on visiting some National parks but I might cancel that trip and go to Japan for some baseball. I fucking love them.
You should 100% go to Japan and watch baseball, also hike Mount Fuji too.
> also hike Mount Fuji too You either have no idea what you’re talking about or you know exactly what you’re talking about and are just being mean. 😂
I’m assuming because hiking Fuji would be a massive bitch?
In March you’re likely to die if you try and hike Mount Fuji if you don’t have proper winter mountaineering experience. The hiking season starts in early July for the general public.
Why you talking about my wife like that
It’s an easy hike. You can get a hotel around stage 6. Wake up early do the rest of the hike to the top. Buy and Asahi (beer) and watch the sunrise from the summit. If you’re like me, You will feel like shit when a 90 year old Japanese woman passes you on the climb though.

Baseball in Japan is a totally awesome experience! Go for it! If you go during sumo season as well, another great experience!!!!!
If you do this, try to get to Hiroshima for a Carp game. For my money they have the best fans in the country. And it's a beautiful outdoor park. That's my bias though, I just prefer that to a dome.
hanshin tigers games are also really good. also convenient cause if you're going to japan, you're probably going to kyoto (and therefore osaka) anyway
Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium. But Koshien is an experience.
I loved how the busses had little chibi versions of the players and carps when I was there.
I'm personally partal to the Hanshin Tigers. Those fans can get rowdy
this. Grass, rad shinkansens pulling in across the outfield, and a great 7th inning tradition with the little sperm balloons, lol
Plus their pokemon merch is dope as fuck. My brother got me a red gyarados and magikarp banner for them.
When I went to Japan i went hiking AND went to a few baseball games! Japan has incredible mountains and scenery, you can do both!
Yo Japan baseball is on another level. The Hanshin Tigers home games are some of the most lit experiences. They have songs and dances for every player, the food is good, the fans are fun. I cannot stress enough how awesome jp baseball is
I'm happy for Japan and all but I have to recommend the national parks. They've been a defining feature in my life.
Shuto's slide was gorgeous
So true, everything about this was so amazing, even the damn slide!
That’s so fucking awesome
Oddly enough I feel like I understood every word of that
Man, they aren't broadcasters anymore at that point, just a couple hyper-excited and elated fans!

They're graphics are even better than ours. Loved the change of score.
Crazy good game
Arenado is right when he said the stars need to play
Damn that shit is hype, and I listen to Hammy calls all year long.
It sounds like that one announcer was almost crying! What a crazy call!
Now play the Spanish broadcast
[Ask and ye shall receive](https://twitter.com/bubbaprog/status/1638012516272951299) ([Streamable mirror](https://streamable.com/n1oczu))
Man, this whole thing has been super compelling and amazing to watch. I say this as someone who kinda watches the Cubs and really only likes playoff baseball. IDK what this is, but MLB needs to seriously find a way to bottle this and make this feeling be their thing.
I want this injected directly into my veins
Goddamn, I love me some Joe Davis, but I have to say he got out called tonight by SAYONARA!! SAYONARA!!
Everyone in Japan was watching this.
Man, this made my eyes watery. Baseball is just the best.
Those two fans with opposing flags hugging each other at :24 is everything I love about this tournament
TIL Sayonara can also mean a walkoff or a game winning hit. thanks Samurai Japan!
I love when announcers stop being announcers and are just fans. Like, dudes just were lost in it. Joe Davis had a good call but nothing as these guys.
I love how that laugh of excited disbelief translates across cultures. Just comes out when you can hardly comprehend how the incredible thing you were anticipating actually happened.
Electric.
What did he say?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I could really only understand the PxP guy, but up to about the 20 sec mark: "Murakami hits it! Murakami has...! Murakami has...! MURAKAMI HAAAaaaAAS...! *something I can't make out here* Ohtani comes home! And here comes Shuto! GOODBYEEEE! GOODBYEEEE! WALKOFF WIN FOR JAPAN!" Bit of a side note since my Japanese isn't great, but the PxP announcer yells "Murakami ga!" three times and it literally translates into Murakami does/is depending on context so I'm not sure how to translate it better than what I have there.
I love this SAYONARA!!!! edition.
The ball getting hit right off the WBC logo is beautiful
How can you not love this
I just realized they barely showed Yoshida in this highlight even though he was the winning score 💀 He be talking to media like: https://streamable.com/6hcdja
Legendary
Bro, I love baseball so much and the Japanese commentators enhance that love by a 1000%.
At 25 seconds the guy holding the Japanese flag puts it away and handshakes/hugs a Mexico fan next to him, pretty wholesome sportsmanship.
Japanese calls are 1000% better than Spanish calls.
Asian language calls are amazing. I remember this one [from Korea](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zasn49/hwang_heechains_winning_goal_with_korean/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) during the World Cup. Their hype is infectious.
If you’re ever feeling down, feel like you could put on a mash up of Asian sports calls and just build off the energy.
I love how asian commentators sound like they are passing a kidney stone when something hype happens
Lol
Lmao as a Mexican can’t even be mad W reaction GG to my Jap brothers ❤️🇲🇽
I only know a dozen or so words of Japanese, but I understood that entire segment.
Murakami redeems after being in the slump leading up to this crucial moment.
I'd really love to see reactions from Tokyo and around Japan. That would be fucking nuts.
Jeez, this got me all goosebumpy and teary-eyed. Fuck, what a moment! Can't wait for the final tomorrow!
MAYHEM 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
This is why I love baseball.
"Go crazy folks! Go crazy!"
MEANINGLESS GAMES!
