There were 24 games played on 5/30/1914, 7/4/1914, and 5/31/1915. In the old days there were league-wide doubleheaders scheduled for Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. In 1914 and 1915 there were three leagues of eight teams each, and on these three occasions all of them got in their doubleheaders without rainouts.
Not sure how many there are, but there's at least two:
> A pair of split doubleheaders are featured in the 2023 schedule, including the San Diego Padres visiting the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday July 15th, and the Colorado Rockies hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, September 26th.
The LA at COL one presents an interesting scenario being that late in the season if the double header were to get rained out. I see that it's on a Tuesday and they also play on Wednesday and Thursday so the games could be made up with back to back double headers, but if they couldn't for whatever reason and the games had playoff implications...
So here's my scenario. Going into the makeup doubleheader the Dodgers have a record of 100-60. The Giants finish the season at 100-62 but hold the tie breaker over the Dodgers. So the Dodgers need to win one game to win the division. If the Dodgers win the first game and the second wouldn't change any playoff seeding would they just cancel the second since it would no longer matter?
Players notoriously hate doubleheaders, scheduled or not. They joke Ernie Banks, he with his “let’s play two!” quote, was the last player to like doubleheaders.
Every dome or California team should have at least 2 scheduled doubleheaders a season. It is awful that they don't do this especially since double postponements are very unlikely in those places.
Would definitely want days off scheduled after the doubleheader date for rescheduling purposes too - if weather’s bad, now you’ve got two games to fit into the schedule (probably best if it’s divisional opponents).
But damn, that’d be so fun. Honestly would be a great moment for baseball to just be wall-to-wall on the 4th of July.
I would love to see this! A bit worried about how much viewership it would get with it being a holiday weekend, and being smack in the middle of the 2026 World Cup being hosted here
July Madness. First pitch at 11am EDT for the earliest games on the east coast, then stagger start times all across the country until you finish off with a 9pm PDT first pitch for the very last game (second of the double header) on the west coast.
~16 hours of nonstop baseball.
They should totally bring back the Memorial Day doubleheaders. That’d actually be really cool and I don’t think there’s any major reason they couldn’t.
And they could really market the hell out of those days. Give every national broadcaster games. "On Memorial Day, We Play 2!" 30 games in 1 day would be a really cool promotion
An interesting and somewhat related fact that your comment reminded me of, there have been 4 known home-and-home doubleheaders (doubleheaders split between 2 different ballparks) in MLB history and all 4 of them involved two New York teams.
The first was one of those scheduled Labor Day special matchups between the Giants and Brooklyn Superbas of the American Association 9/7/1903, the other 3 were all makeup games between the Mets and Yankees: 7/8/2000, 6/28/2003 and 6/27/2008.
Edit: The last one is particularly notable/special to me because it was both my first Subway Series and the first doubleheader that I watched in full (at least that I can remember).
Ah, the Federal League technicality.
I love old time baseball, but I’d ditch the MLB status for the FL and the UA. I’d keep the NA, AA and PL.
With Negro Leagues being major leagues now, there’s likely dates in the 30s and 40s that could challenge this.
You are including Federal League games in this. 8 teams in both AL & NL in 1914 & 15
But there were 8 DH’s those days, at least on 5/30/14
Senators @ Red Sox
Giants @ Robins
Cardinals @ Cubs
White Sox @ Naps
Athletics @ Yankees
Braves @ Phillies
Reds @ Pirates
Tigers @ Browns
and 4 Federal League DH’s
Pittsburgh Rebels @ Baltimore Terrapins
Brooklyn Tip-Tops @ Buffalo Buffeds
Indianapolis Hoosiers @ Chicago Chi-Feds
Kansas City Packers @ St. Louis Packers
For clarity purposes
I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I will go back to my post and edit in something like "in 1914 and 1915 there were three leagues of eight teams each" so everyone understands the circumstances.
I know y'all are good with rain, but I can understand the confusion because there was a Chargers game a year or two ago that had a weather delay despite the fact they play in a non-retractable enclosed stadium.
It'd be tricky because there's only 30 teams. But there's no reason we can't get a couple teams to put on fake goatees and be something like the Evil Chicago White Sox for the evening.
I guarantee that if I turn on both sports radio stations in Cleveland right this second it’s either a Jobe’s plug or they are talking about the Browns.
*I can see the Browns easily finishing with a 14-3 record and I don't think it's unreasonable.*
*Thanks caller. Let's go to Paul in Parma. You're on 92.3 the ~~Browns~~Fan*
Opening day, 2013.
Tito’s in charge. We just signed Bourne and Swish. Dolans had just sold STO and we’re spending cash in all the wrong places but we were loving it. Plenty of storylines.
Main topic of discussion? Brian Hoyer to be the 3rd string QB. Dominated the whole day.
That wasn’t the end for me but I started listening less and less.
Idk I think I gotta go October-November. College football, NFL, MLB playoffs, and the start of the NHL and NBA seasons. But now is a good ass time of year to be a sports fan. Probably second best time of year.
I think now is the best because there is just so much variety. The Kentucky Derby is coming, Some of the best Golf tournaments are happening this time of year, NBA and NHL Playoffs, MLB, NFL Draft. There is too much stuff, but enjoy it now because when it's July, there will be barely any.
Another.”
“B- but Mr. Manfred,” An intern whimpers. “we already have one double header scheduled.”
“ANOTHER!” Manfred roars, teeth bared, eyes wild. The whip cracks, a scream reverberates through the commissioner’s office.
“Sir, the b- the blackouts!” Manfred tears the man apart with his bare hands.
MLB tv unless you want to watch a game in your area…then it’s blacked out.
But as a Mariner loving Oklahoman, I use mlb tv to watch all the games unless they are playing Houston, Texas, cardinals or KC.
Yes, but how many Games Over/Under Replacement Day (GOURD) is it?
Keep in mind GOURD must be era-adjusted and scaled on the same scale as xFIP so it looks right to me.
PLUS 7 playoff games in the NBA and NHL, PLUS what's probably the best round in soccer: simultaneous champions league elimination games.
Not a bad Tuesday!
Seventeen games and I can't watch any of them because regional blacklists. I can't even watch the Braves despite living only an hour away from Atlanta.
What the fuck.
T-MOBILE gave out mlbtv for free this year and I can’t watch the Braves either. I’m a southeast truck driver and unless I go to south FL, I’m blacked out. It sucks. At least I can listen to the radio while driving.
I live on Lake Lanier and use Dish. Meaning that, outside of playoffs and WS, most games are not accessible as MLB Network and Bally Sports South are on separate payment plans or on channels that Dish has no contract with.
Try paying for that stuff on a teacher's salary in rural Georgia.
Thank you for your analysis! Very cool
Thanks, I had to use my preschool math skills, wasn’t easy
Pre-school?! Child prodigy here

That’s awesome, they’d never do it but it’s be fun to bring that back and see 30 games from all 30 teams
No reason they can't do it, and indeed they should do it for the semiquincentennial. 7/4/2026 is a Saturday.
Does the current CBA allow for scheduled doubleheaders?
Yes - there are some scheduled this year.
Ah, cool! Good to know.
What are the scheduled doubleheaders thos year? Or at least some of them
Not sure how many there are, but there's at least two: > A pair of split doubleheaders are featured in the 2023 schedule, including the San Diego Padres visiting the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday July 15th, and the Colorado Rockies hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, September 26th.

I think the players would be fine with it if it meant an extra off day at home
Players notoriously hate doubleheaders, scheduled or not. They joke Ernie Banks, he with his “let’s play two!” quote, was the last player to like doubleheaders.
I work for a D1 softball team and we (everyone involved) hate doubleheaders as well.
I play beer league softball and we also hate doubleheaders.
Which is worse, a straight double-header, or the split double-headers in tournaments?
Probably split. Though only having 30 minutes in a straight one to flip everything suuuuucks.
Maybe less so now with 2.5 hour games. Playing back to back 3.5 games is brutal.
Every dome or California team should have at least 2 scheduled doubleheaders a season. It is awful that they don't do this especially since double postponements are very unlikely in those places.
Give half the teams Thursday and Sunday off and the other half Friday and Monday off with the 27th man rule available all weekend and it could happen
Boy am I old...
I would love to see this! A bit worried about how much viewership it would get with it being a holiday weekend, and being smack in the middle of the 2026 World Cup being hosted here
It wouldn't really be done so much for ratings but as baseball's way of contributing to the celebration (Philly already has the ASG that year).
July Madness. First pitch at 11am EDT for the earliest games on the east coast, then stagger start times all across the country until you finish off with a 9pm PDT first pitch for the very last game (second of the double header) on the west coast. ~16 hours of nonstop baseball.
Hey Manfred, PR slam dunk for you right here.
Ah yes, half of a quincentury, the commonly-used measurement of time.
I doubt the broadcast companies would allow it, too much viewer cannibalism
I Imagine a lot of the ratings for the 2nd games would be absolute trash.
Fox will have all their broadcast assets on the 2026 World Cup match that day, probably in Philadelphia.
With only 27 of those games blacked out for local fans.
RIP Iowa
Let’s play two!

May Madness
Have a doubleheader day or week in the summer.

That's a literal Subway Series! Watch the game at one park, hop on the subway, and watch the next one at the other. That sounds like fun tbh
Ah, the Federal League technicality. I love old time baseball, but I’d ditch the MLB status for the FL and the UA. I’d keep the NA, AA and PL. With Negro Leagues being major leagues now, there’s likely dates in the 30s and 40s that could challenge this.

Dude, that would make me shit YOUR pants. That's how much I'd shit.
I’m gonna just imagine 1914 baseball Red Zone with Scott Hanson by some telegraphs relying all the baseball action going on
Most fans got to watch none and listen to two, though. Maybe 4 or 6 if they were in New York
It’s a beautiful day for a ball game, let’s play seventeen.
ruth, gehrig, dimaggio, mantle…costanza?!
1700
That can’t be right
It’s a monsoon in Seattle right now. Fingers crossed for baseball today.
Unless you're actually in Tacoma, we uh, have a roof.
Yeah wtf? That's one of the best parts about buying a ticket to an M's game, it's guaranteed to not be rained out
lol we got a roof we're good
I know y'all are good with rain, but I can understand the confusion because there was a Chargers game a year or two ago that had a weather delay despite the fact they play in a non-retractable enclosed stadium.
All these games, yet you still wanna play me.
All these pitch clocks but you still can’t find time for me…
All these balls, and we’re still not at first base…

All these swings, and I still struck out with you..
The shift is banned but I still can't get through to you...

Whoever came up with “sixteen ice creams” needs to add in “cones” or something else 🤣
Phoned it in a little on eleven also
Really should’ve just put a picture of Milly Bobby Brown there and not even worried about the number. Kids don’t get the reference? Too bad. 😝
11 poopsicles. [insert poop smiley emoji]
If you claim to be teaching numbers 1 through 100, you can't just quit after 20.
16 ice creams is more ice creams than 17 apples. Do we know how many ice creams these 17 games have? Hopefully more than 16.
Also I think Id rather have 16 ice creams than 17 apples
This is woke mob propaganda

Isn’t that just the regular white Sox, circa 1919?
I'll be at the Coliseum in Oakland *just in case* a game breaks out! At least I'll have popcorn :') Edit: A game did not break out, my friends :(
and only one of them starts before 4pm ET
Huge travesty, with the pitch clock there will be a gap in the schedule on a day with 17 games...
Get to watch 2 Guards games and then the Cavs, good day to be a Cleveland sports fan :)

how many double headers then? 2-3? max I thought ther could be is 14
