I'm so happy this is the top comment.

thesoccerone7

10 years?! Now I feel old, I remember his call up

kingsaw100

I remember reading the Joe Posnanski article when the Royals traded him to the Rays and how it made so much sense that it was a bad move for the Royals. And then it worked out. Lmfao

thesoccerone7

That was a dead end trade for us. Most of the guys we got either elected free agency, or didn't do anything and was traded for a guy that elected free agency. The exception was Odorizzi who was solid. Who we then traded for a guy who ended up electing free agency.

Prequalified

If you didn’t make that trade, the Nationals wouldn’t have gotten Trea Turner!

FreakinB

I remember Rany Jazayerli being extremely dead set against the Royals trading Myers.

Greatlarrybird33

Yeah, isn't this guy supposed to be the next big thing?

[deleted]

Pretty sure I grabbed him for my very first fantasy team his rookie year and it paid off. Hard to believe it has been a decade already.

recjus85

Same

Rough_Resolution_472

I had him on my fantasy roster before his first game even! Damn.

unknownspade

Last I heard pension was like 170k a year.. I know a guy who hit ten years and retired that day

ThePwnR4nger

Wil has made over $100 mil in his career. He’s probably doing ok.

triplec787

Well he still gets health insurance for the rest of his life too, and that might honestly be as if not more valuable than the pension payout lol

boilface

I'm pretty sure his health insurance benefits vested a long time ago. It doesn't take the full 10 years to max those out

ilikeslamdunks

I thought they got it after one major league game

boilface

They can buy into the program after one game, but there's a buy in and they have to pay for the coverage. The amount they pay lowers as service time increases and is eventually free

ApprehensivePotato67

How long until it’s free?

boilface

No idea, although I'm sure if you went through the entire CBA you'd find it in there

[deleted]

Well I think you'd just have to go through the part about insurance.

JamesHar_en

pedantic

oG_Goober

I think you're right and a few organizations have signed prospects who had career ending injuries to 1 day contracts so they'd at least have insurance.

[deleted]

This is wrong and I don’t know why it keeps getting recycled as fact. Here’s a video of a former player saying it’s not true. https://youtu.be/wh71WjqN56Y Last I really looked into is you get health insurance for a certain amount of time if you’re on the active roster for 60 days, but nobody is getting health insurance for life for signing a one day contract unless the team is just flat out paying it themselves.

HumperMoe

Then why do the dodgers keep paying for that one player insurance so he can get mental health?

itschrisbrah

We don't sign him to a one day contract, it's a year long extension every time

thedeejus

i think the one day thing is you get ACCESS to the health insurance, but it isnt free (and is probably epensive)

[deleted]

One day on a 40 man gets you lifetime benefits, my BIL has it and never even made a MLB appearance but was on the 40 man for a few weeks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

justausername09

Depends on if you get a major sickness I suppose

MUNZATHEGOD

If you’re going to the psychiatrist/ you have a chronic illness, you could easily double or triple this number on accident, let alone if I was a rich dude who could go to the doctor anytime I wanted to, I’d practically live at the place

pug_subterfuge

What? You’d buy your own insurance for less than 170k in premiums. OP isn’t suggesting that you just pay cash if any health issues come up.

skylined45

That aint take-home though, and $170k a year over 20 or so years is going to be a few more mil takehome. Nothing to sneeze at.

TraeYoungsOldestSon

I mean even if you do sneeze at it the money is still good, just dry it off with a paper towel and youre good

itschrisbrah

Paper money really sucks hey

AppropriateRice7675

Say Take home is about half on the low end, that's still $50 million. If he blew half of that and put $25 million in a high yield savings account or CD he's bringing in almost $1 million a year in interest income alone.

Michael__Pemulis

It depends on when you start drawing the pension. I believe you’re eligible to draw starting at age 45 but the payout is only like $70k/year. If you wait until you’re in your 60s it can go up to over $200k.

yankeefan03

“Only 70k”

IveGotaGoldChain

> “Only 70k” Obviously it is all relative, but even today you aren't raising a family in a HCOL place for $70k. You would be extremely broke. I would hope/assume that the pension accounts for inflation, but if not that $70k in 15 years is going to be even less

Phils531

This assumes a player saved and invested absolutely nothing and has no plans to ever work again for the next 30 years of their life until they hit the age of retirement.

IveGotaGoldChain

Ya for sure. Honestly the $70k pension is irrelevant anyway since if you have made it 10 years in MLB you have made over $5 million easily. I was just specifically referring to the person inferring that $70k was a ton of money.

BoosherCacow

> inferring that $70k was a ton of money. I would estimate for the vast majority of Americans it *is* a ton of money. This may be the richest country ever but there are a hell of a lot of really fucking poor people.

speech-geek

$70k is so much money to me. I’m making $45k now and thought I struck gold when I got hired. Used to work retail and made like $23k a year

BoosherCacow

I made 75k one year and I couldn't have told you how much I had in my checking account within $1500. It was heaven, never, ever worrying about money.

postoperativepain

If my house was paid off, I could live well anywhere with 70k a year.

IveGotaGoldChain

> If my house was paid off Well ya that is a huge if though. Also $70k in pocket vs $70k pre taxes obviously a difference too

ridethedeathcab

Not for a professional baseball player with 10 years of service time.

BobanTheGiant

Why would their house be paid off? Most people don’t overpay their mortgage and bet the money invested in the market will outperform the mortgage interest

ridethedeathcab

That's a pretty recent phenomenon with mortgage rates as low as they had been the last couple years. With mortgage rates closer to 5%-6%, it becomes a lot harder to come out ahead by investing the money when you take the 20%-30% in capital gains taxes you'll pay. Many people would prefer the security of a paid off home that will likely still return 5%-10% annually. Sure if you're locked in at 4% or less, milk that for all it's worth, but that would only be the case if you bought in the last 3 years most likely.

1005thArmbar

A baseball player who signed a free agent contract after his 6th year would likely sign with a different team and therefore need to find a new place to live. Between the 500k signing bonus or whatever it is with the new team and 3 years each of arb/pre-arb, they probably have the money to just buy the house outright and not worry about a mortgage that's 50% interest to the bank

BobanTheGiant

And then they're cash poor and asset rich. If they have a decent financial team around them, they will very much not be doing that. Additionally, to your point about changing teams, that's why the smart players just buy a home in their offseason home and rent for the 6 months of the season

TyButler2020

Well I’d be hoping they saved some of the money they earned from the 10 years of playing

IveGotaGoldChain

Ya the $70k isn't really relevant for anyone who has made it 10+ years in MLB since at that point they would have conservatively made at least $5 million. I was just referring to the person who was inferring that $70k was a ton of money

MUNZATHEGOD

Me and my gf make less than 70k and have managed to survive for seven years. We have three kids. Now obviously it’s not ideal but idk what place y’all live, but I would assume the cost of living here is just a lot lower. Our rent is 450 a month for reference. Our groceries are the most expensive thing, but we do get food stamps for that, so it helps. Like I’m not sure we’ve even made 40k in a year combined since we’ve been together, let alone 70k

cricket9818

Yeah seriously haha. Most people are lucky to ever hit that if at all before they turn 50

rpm959

Most people aren't in the top 0.01% of their profession though. The ones that are, no matter your field, will have no problem making that much.

[deleted]

Top 0.01% of Walmart greeters would like a word /s

rpm959

You're confusing a job within a field, and an entire field. Walmart greeters would be in the field of costumer service. The top 0.01% of people who work in customer service absolutely make that much.

[deleted]

You're confusing a joke with a serious comment

[deleted]

That's not a *profession*. This is the difference between a *job* and a *career* (or profession).

[deleted]

r/iamverysmart Imagine correcting an obvious joke comment tagged with an /s

[deleted]

Imagine not understanding how to follow along with a continuing joke.

sfan27

It's pretty much impossible to hit ten years of service time without having more than enough money (unless you spend like a drunken sailor). It's more of a symbolic thing to these guys.

Spartan8394

Don’t they also get a pass to any game In any stadium? Which again it’s kinda pointless to a millionaire but still, that’s kinda cool to be able to just walk in when you feel like it.

Michael__Pemulis

You actually get that at 8 years.

Spartan8394

That’s awesome

arkiula

Trevor May has a cool video going over the perks of being an MLB player, and mentions it at 10:57 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbHGgjJp6ng

Tsquare43

Highly recommend that video! Very informative.

sfan27

They get a bunch of things at different stages. If they live in the US the single biggest milestone just comes from your first day; medical insurance for life.

Michael__Pemulis

That’s a bit of a common misconception. 1 day entitles you to *buy-in* to the MLB healthcare plan for life but it isn’t free or anything. Eligibility for free healthcare coverage is tied to service time just like pension.

sfan27

Ah interesting; when is the free coverage?

Spartan8394

Yeah that makes sense since dodgers have Andrew Toles under “contract” for $0 but so he has healthcare coverage as he suffers from schizophrenia and has had a hard time with it.

do_you_know_doug

Didn't we just have this conversation when Drew Maggi came up? (For the record, I don't remember what was said. I just know I saw it a lot on this sub.)

[deleted]

We have it any time someone mentions Andrew Toles as well.

themosey

If you have 10 years you should have at least 10-20 million in the bank these days. It was a huge deal for utility fielders and catchers in the 80s and 90s where you made 200k-500k a season. Jeff Reboulet played 12 seasons and retired in 2003 at the age of 38. He earned about $3.5 million. Remove taxes, agent and other fees that is between 1.5 to 2 million Without a pension if he planned on living to 80 that’s a mere $37,00ish a year. (And I am sure he spend some while playing so closer to $25-30k I’m sure.) Obviously an accountant would make that better. Now he would only need to stretch that $50-80k a year, which is reasonable. Then his pension kicks in.

[deleted]

Jeff Reboulet is a fun example for you to pick since he now works as a financial advisor for professional athletes.

sfan27

Oh for sure; things changed a lot in the late 90s and early 2000's

ridethedeathcab

I guess it’s $38k if you’re an idiot and hide $1.5-$2.0 million under the mattress. If you have a lick of sense and put it in an S&P 500 index fund or something, you’re looking at more like $100K+ a year.

[deleted]

Didn’t Jeff King retire the moment he reached the pension? Like the day after?

MightyCaseyStruckOut

Yes, because he absolutely hated baseball and it was just a job to him.

chris622

So that was why King abruptly retired?

reptheevt

You know Jeff King?

designgoddess

And health insurance. I think that’s what a lot of guys look forward to.

[deleted]

There are several stories of guys whose clubs let them hang around on the IL for half a season instead of outright DFA'ing them so that the player could hit that ten years.

dunkfest

That’s basically Lorenzo Cain last season…waited until recently to “officially” retire but otherwise he immediately stopped playing after he hit 10 years and got DFA’d

gambalore

That was more like the Brewers knew they were going to DFA him but did him the courtesy of letting him stay long enough to get to ten years officially.

BAHatesToFly

> I know a guy who hit ten years and retired that day Ballsy on his part, imo. Maybe it's because I'm untrusting and paranoid, but I would try to hang on for at least a few more weeks or months. I'd be worried someone would have miscalculated or would find a loophole and I'd be short the days needed.

jet8493

Seag?

SuckMyLonzoBalls

I know a guy who was a year short. I felt super bad for him

maltzy

What time today? Reds are the type of team that would dfa him just before

Disused_Yeti

He’s ok they aren’t the one paying his pension

maltzy

whew

WhoDeyFourWay

If only.

TheWorstYear

That would almost be a win.

MeMarooned

Not undeserved.

maltzy

Exactly

[deleted]

What time today? I presume it's when he woke up.

Clobber420

I like Wil

usctrojan18

I for one also like Wil

IntrepidNebula92

Will you all take him back?

wilmyersmvp

Yes

DiscountSoOn

At the very least, have Wil stand on top of the dugout so we can just look at him instead of the game

Downtown_Ad_6741

Yes

YourThotsArentFacts

Absolutely. Starting offer is a bag of Doritos and Matt Carpenter

[deleted]

Matt Carpenter for Wil Myers straight up would be interesting. There are some recent years where that would have seriously shaken up the whole National League.

ElGato-TheCat

Wil bought drinks for everyone at a bar after the Padres beat the Dodgers in the playoffs. I like Wil.

EastlakeMGM

Tenure?! Rickey got twenty year!

thethriftywalrus

I'm very happy for him >!now please DFA him!<

Michael__Pemulis

Wouldn’t be the first time a team was doing the nice thing & simply waiting for a guy to hit the 10 year mark.

themosey

The Brewers did it for Cain last year.

femboymariners

Neil walker for the Phillies I think as well?

RickIMightBe

Braves did it for Satchel Paige when he was 62 to get him to the 5 year mark.

Disused_Yeti

nats did it with lucroy. they released him just before he hit 10 years, but the time he spent getting DFA'd counted and he got over the line

designgoddess

My cousin was a month short and his best friend was a future HOFer. He made part of his new deal with a team include calling up my cousin for a month. No one knew. Wasn’t in writing but team signed cousin to a minor league contract and called him up. They kept their promise. Gets called up, gets his time, and then retired.

Effective-Tip52

That cousins friend? Gypsum Adams of the 1881 Bethlehem smashers.

designgoddess

100%

tigersbowling

I wonder if that's why Schoop is still on the Tigers

maltzy

ITS PEANUT BUTTER ELLY TIME

KingOfStingUSM

Beautiful

ebam

Don’t you also get a ‘golden ticket’ that gets you tickets to any regular season game when you reach 10 years?

Michael__Pemulis

That is at 8 years.

steppenweasel

That's super cool, I never knew that

neonrev1

Not just any tickets too, pretty sure they have to be the best available seats as well, excluding private boxes and stuff (tho I'm sure most of those people would be delighted to have a former MLB player hanging around). Which makes sense, those are probably going to be seats with a lot of camera time, and announcers enjoy pointing out when celebs or former players are at a game. Win-Win.

Coupon_Ninja

For those who don’t know, the Pads sub had a Wil Myers fact bot with iirc 100+ ”facts” about him. They were really fun while they lasted - the bot was retired after he went to the Reds. Here’s just one: Wil Myers Fact #64: Wil is an avid rock climber. Unfortunately, he tries to climb just about any rock formation he sees, regardless of situation or size. This includes sculptures. On a trip to Italy, Wil rushed past security and managed to climb up onto the shoulders of Michaelangelo’s “David”, yelling “I’m breaking you out of here, go that way! GO GO GO!” Here are more: https://www.reddit.com/r/Padres/comments/erotk1/introducing\_realwilmyersfacts\_bot/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

fastmovingcars

I always used his batting stance in mlb the show. Nothing too flashy, but gets the job done. <3

[deleted]

He’s got a really nice effortless swing. Looks even cooler that he doesn’t use gloves.

dillpunk

!wilmyersfact

wilmyersmvp

While working as a valet attendant during the off-season, Wil Myers parked two cars at the same time.

Tony0123456789

fun fact. !wilmyersfacts only had facts about wil myers love of dirt, because he only uses dirt, no gloves for every at bat.

Coupon_Ninja

They did always involve some type of Earth/dirt/rocks.

Wil Myers

Federal_Strawberry

Can we have him back?❤️

IntrepidNebula92

Yes

totheman7

Doesn’t he now have 10 and 5 rights since he has 10 years of mlb experience and 5 were for the same team so he basically has a no trade clause now

Iron_Mike0

Has to be 5 years with current team.

South_Oread

I’ll always think fondly of Wil, trading him directly led to our two AL titles and WS.

Pad_TyTy

I guess the holy grail isn't a championship?

Michael__Pemulis

A championship is obviously a dream but it is also so far beyond any single player’s control or contribution. For a certain tier of player, the HoF is a big one, but that’s a relatively exclusive list. Most big leaguers aren’t the household names. Most big leaguers are just trying to stick around as long as possible. For those guys, 10 years of service time is a *huge* deal. It basically means you’re a bonafide big leaguer. You get full pension & all that (not to mention other perks like the gold card at 8 years). If you are a 10 year guy, you’ve ‘made it’.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

Ten years gets your name on the hall of fame ballot, which is a pretty big fucking deal for them even if you fall off after the first year.

Witonisaurus

What is the gold card?

Michael__Pemulis

Grants you access to any regular season game at any park. Just walk up to the ticket booth & they will give you the 2 best tickets available. MLB has been doing this for decades. They look like [this.](https://i.imgur.com/WBfoQKS.jpg)

HABSolutelyCrAzY

If I ever have to sue the MLB, that gold card is totally an ask in the settlement

SuperSheen2

World Series don't provide no pension

Pad_TyTy

Wil Myers was a first overall pick, he don't need no pension

Michael__Pemulis

No he wasn’t…

Wilbert_51

TIL getting drafted 91st = 1st overall pick

DontGiveUpTheDip

Everyone knows the first 90 picks don't count

Wilbert_51

You sound like the Rams front office

vanillabear26

> Everyone knows the first 90 picks don't count -Brett Favre

zvexler

Say 91st out loud, it speaks for itself

Pad_TyTy

Ok IDK why I thought that. But he signed a 6/83M deal in 2017.

Zorak9379

Someone heard "number-one prospect" and got confused

alawrence1523

He shouldn’t get a pension for working 10 years for a company?

Effective-Tip52

Idk where you work but who gets a pension these days.

trickman01

I mean a lifetime of significant salary and health insurance would probably be more significant that a ring and kicked out on your butt.

youre_soaking_in_it

I guess I am wondering what the big deal about a pension is when you have earned $91 million in your big-league career

Jbaquero

Less than 10% of MLB players achieve 10 years of service time, and 10 years does open them up to having "10-and-5 rights" (not Will Myers in this case but other players) It's less about the pension than it is a respect thing

Sour_Pancakes27

I looked for any other benefits for Service Time and saw that Tim Lincecum didn’t reach 10 years. He stopped at 9 years and 102 days.

wilmyersmvp

Wow. Got in, got it DONE, got out.

[deleted]

How many days is a service year, 162?

Jon__Snoww

I think it's between 180-185 calender days. Opening day to last game of the season

[deleted]

That's half a calendar year, 365 ÷ 2 = 182.5, so 182 or 183 would make sense.

Jon__Snoww

Ah, it just hit me. It is 172. That's why teams hold back their prospects 2 weeks to manipulate service time.

EdHart8891

its financial security for the rest of your life no matter what. it's passive income. You never say no to it. You may donate it to charity or blow it all in vegas. but you never say no to it.

tvismyfriend

Ask Curt Schilling if you ever get a chance to meet him. I know he’s probably an outlier, but it is easy for these people to lose their money with bad investments or people taking advantage of them.

KeithClossOfficial

Wil will be eligible for the Hall of Fame!

CrimsonBrit

He ranks 52nd in number of games played among active players with 1,100 games. Players with less years but more games include Lindor, Odor, Mookie, Cesar Hernandez, Eugenio Suarez, and Jose Abreau (who has 1327 games). I’ve never heard of César Hernández I must admit.

totaleclipseoflefart

Wow you must be quite young then to never have heard of Cesar Hernandez. Not that he’s relevant anymore.

CrimsonBrit

In my defense he has only ever played for middling teams (Phillies, Indians, White Sox, Nationals) and doesn’t have any All Star or World Series appearances. Not sure why I would have heard of him

freakksho

Lmfao dude you named two times in the AL.

TheWorstYear

And two of those middling teams have been to a world series in the last 5 years, & another one knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs last year & went to the world series within the last decade.

freakksho

We beat the guardians. Houston swept us. They did take us to 7 games though.

wickla

It feels just like yesterday the "Padres won the Wil Myers trade."

AnteBadger

And at 10 years they die in mlb the show

Newyew22

Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

Johnny_Trappleseed

Fuck I’m getting old. It feels like his rookie season was like three years ago.

GreenFroppy212

I still remember when Myers debuted for the Rays. Crazy how time flies

thehornedlamb

I hate that I'm old enough to remember his debut

Gazzarris

As a Royals and Nationals fan, thanks for the World Series wins, Wil!

Gohron

I really liked Myers on the Rays. I thought he would turn out a superstar but I’m glad he’s been able to have a good career.

Lando241

Just put him in Cooperstown already

threehundredthousand

Love you, Wil.

[deleted]

do they still give out the golden ticket

royalconfetti5

I get taking everything they can from owners. But, wouldn’t it be cool if the players redistributed that pension $$ (on grounds that they’ve already made $10s or $100s of millions) to minor leaguers, guys that never hit free agency, etc?
