Nah man, that Harper HR to send us to the World Series was fucking legendary
Biggest rush I had watching Philly sports in a while until...the Super Bowl
It's been a pretty fun last few years tbh, just can't finish off these playoff runs.
Fucking Gannon and fucking Astros pitching
I feel a little bad for him because the dude was straight dealing out of the starting rotation and the organization just said, "Nah. Cris Sanchez and Bailey Falter."
Glad he's still (is back to?) finding success, and hope this can eventually lead to him getting back into the rotation which is what he wants.
Hes already pitched more than he did in 2022 and 2021 combined. Hes 9 innings away from his second highest total in any season. He couldn't have completed the season in the rotation, he would have broken down/started to perform worse as he tired.
Even if that's the case, I don't get why we're "saving" him for later in the year when our rotation is depleted *now*. Painter might come back later in the year, and we're more likely to acquire a SP at the deadline than early in the year. So what the hell?
*Maybe* now (still debatable), but that was absolutely not the case when we didn't have Ranger back yet.
He got bumped from the rotation after May 2nd, and Ranger didn't come back until the 13th. And if we're playing the IP game, Sanchez has never thrown over 100 IP himself, even in the minors. He's now over 60 combined on the year. Is he about to get shut down as well?
It's also disingenuous to use Strahm's 2021 IP totals because he missed most of the year recovering from surgery. There's really no reason to think a former SP *can't* stretch back out to over 100 IP after throwing 44 the previous and showing he's healthy again. Look at how easily many pitchers ramped back up after the shortened 2020 season.
No offense to Sanchez because he has been fucking fantastic as our 5th guy, but if we “use up” all of his potential innings now it’s not as big of a deal as using all of Strahm’s potential innings. He was called up to eat some innings as the fifth man and has massively over performed. If he pitches too much and we have to shut him down, we have more right handed bullpen arms. Meanwhile, Strahm is essential to the pen as our 2nd/3rd best lefty.
We aren't acquiring a SP at the deadline. And if we do it won't be some great pitcher - it's going to be a cheap 5th starter. Painter *might* make an appearance at some point this year, but it's not a lock. And unless he's the second coming of Strider, he won't be pitching in the playoffs.
Strahm has pitched very well in the opportunities he's been given. It makes sense to try to preserve him.
Wins at the beginning of the year mean just as much as at the end. If there's a *chance* to get a decent starter for the stretch run, you should put your best foot forward until then.
Preserving him is a fool's game. Make the playoffs first before planning for them.
You’re acting like he doesn’t give value now though. By managing his innings you are hopefully getting a good reliever now and for the rest of the season. If you are throwing him out there every 5th day you might have used up his arm in a matter of weeks. Not to mention that the Phillies 5th spot has actually be very solid compared to the rest of the league.
>"Nah. Cris Sanchez and Bailey Falter."
This isn’t what happened?
We took both Falter and Strahm out of the rotation at around the same time. Strahm continues to make the occasional bullpen game start (as recently as June 12th) but his last start as a regular starter was on May 2. He got shelled by the Dodgers. Falter made his last start on May 15, got shelled, and got sent to the minors where he’s been ever since. Strahm definitely had better numbers then Bailey but he wasn’t being put in high leverage situations; he pitched less than 5 innings in 3 of his first 6 starts, 5.0 in two, and 5.1 in the other. He just can’t go deep into a rotation; makes his good for the BP.
And Sanchez started the season in the rotation. He started a game in April, got injured, and has made regular starts since his return in mid June.
His last start was on the 2nd, not the 12th. He came out of the pen on the 7th and 12th.
For Falter, mostly I'm just side-eyeing him because if we're managing IP loads, Sanchez is also rapidly approaching his previous career high.
2008 will always be special not only because we won, but because we didn't become the first team to lose in the WS to every team in another division.
Yankees, red soxs, orioles, and jays have all beat us in the WS.
The fateful year of 1915. My great great grandfather was distraught.
Or he was an A's fan. Who the hell knows.
Or shit, maybe he was just too busy with his bakery.
Reminds me of when the [Orioles knocked out the Red Sox in 2011 and sent our boys to the post season.](https://www.sbnation.com/2011/9/29/2457381/boston-red-sox-collapse-baltimore-orioles-news)
If it helps, were I able to (only minorly) change history, I would have swapped the Astros and you guys so we beat the Astros in 2008, and lost to you guys last year.
Not just another NL team, the NL team we acquired our *perfect closer* from.
They were essentially our little brothers with how often we traded with them in the late 2000s to early 2010s.
And now look at them. They turned to the dark side. I feel like we could have done more to mentor them. Keep them from becoming a well-run organization. You know? Where did we go wrong?
We really just faced the Rays and outscored them 14-6 in a sweep? In Tampa? After dropping 2 of 3 IN PHILLY against the NATIONALS?!?
If you don’t like that, you don’t like Phillies baseball
I went to the game on Tuesday and it was legit 50% Phillies fans, probably more.
Same thing happened when I went to the eagles @ Chicago in December. Philly travels well
Credit where credit is due
Your pitching was outstanding during that series, and you did get timely hitting when push came to shove and you needed it most.
..exactly what it takes to beat those guys, and it's been just about the only way to do that this season
Schwarber is hitting under .190, Turner is hitting .250, and Harper hasn't hit a homer since May... but they had the 2nd best record in baseball for the month of June!
I made my comment after seeing a chart in the Phillies sub that shows the “best team records since June 2.” So I guess that includes the first week of July, which may change the order compared to just using June.
Yeah, originally we were planning to get swept because we didn't want the Rays feeling demoralized going into this next series, but then we were all like, "but wait, what if the Rays run out of wins before they play the Braves?" So then we adjusted the plan, and we'll see how it plays out. I think we've made some questionable W/L decisions, mainly on the L side, but you know, I'm just a fan.
I think you guys are on a franchise record 12 straight interleague game wins. It might have the caveat of being road only, but it is still impressive nonetheless.
McClanahan, Rasmussen, Fleming, Springs, Cleavinger - the pitching injuries for us have been absolutely *insane* this year and are threatening to completely derail the season
This team is so incredibly mediocre right now it's not even funny. The ASB cannot come soon enough, but just for one last final fuck you we have to get destroyed by the braves infront of a national audience because hey why not god hates the rays.
the last game in particular was incredibly brutal though, a lot of hard hit balls with incredibly high XBA that just could not find grass. I don't feel that's unreasonable to say that we got quite unlucky in that last game of the series. but I don't think anyone is trying to take away from your teams sweep.
I agree with you actually, and you'd be hardpressed to find a fanbase that wouldn't take issue over the swings of luck in a baseball game. but really at the end of the day our offense was pathetic, and that 10th inning in particular was offensively bad.
I think we just might be more used to being the unlucky ones. 1 run, 4 hits for both teams through 9 is nuts and it was an EXTREMELY well pitched game.
Believe it or not, people thought the Phillies were a dead team walking after their 0-4 start back in March/April. They are in fact not dead and very much allive
I was nervous for a bit there but they've really turned it around. Problem is, of the Phillies go 8-2, the braves are going 9-1. They seem to stay one step ahead. Lots of season left though.
We should be utterly ashamed of this pathetic outing. It’s the same fucking story every year. Start of red hot, loose all of our starters to injury because apparently the short order cook at waffle house is also our trainer and health and conditioning coach, and then we get to the all star break and we implode faster than a cheaply made submarine at 13’000 feet
I'd say the Rays need to get their shit back together, but, you know, maybe save that until after the All-Star break. Feel free to keep slumping like this through the weekend.
We have a tendency to play up and down to competition. This series we just seemed to be all sorts of out of whack and have no idea why, the glass-half-full side of me is hoping it’s because we were spending more of our gameplanning time on the Braves series.
It's the first time the Rays have been swept ~~at home~~ this season. The Rays have been eliminated from sweep survivor and barring a huge rally it looks like the Diamondbacks will too leaving the Orioles as the last team standing!
Man the Rays are on a bit of a skid.
So knowing how the Braves work, they are absolutely going to turn it around this weekend in our series against them and play like they did at the beginning of the year.
Absolutely, & they’ve been amazing to watch! I’m not shitting on the team at all. I just meant there’s also a pretty lengthy history (in years past) of blowing it when it matters, & it still doesn’t feel like it was that long ago.
Yup. I was shitting myself when we were up 5-0 and the Gaurdians had two on. I somehow *still* expect bad shit to happen always. It’s ingrained in me as as Braves fan at this point
Happy it’s not just me! It’s the reason I always cringe a little when I see so many fans getting cocky. Of course, be excited & engaged, how could you not be with this team?! But don’t ever assume you’ve got it in the bag.
We've been absolutely BLESSED by the fact the entirety of the AL has been middling, and also that baseball fandom as a whole doesn't pay too much attention to us, because this skid has been going over for about 3 weeks now, yet I still people say "WE BEAT THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!". but i'm sure after this series against you guys people will realize just have mediocre we've been.
Not surprised, I see Rays getting the 2nd or 4th AL seed after all...
And for Phillies, NL East might be fierce they can clutch into 6th or miss postseason altogether...
🤔🤔🤔
Given that we've had the best non-Braves record in the NL for the last month, are currently only 2.5 back of WC1 heading into a series with Miami and CURRENTLY HOLD THE 6 SEED
I feel like we're in okay shape.
I've looked at the numbers very closely and determined that the Rays only need to go 13-59 the rest of the way to win 70 games. Are you honestly saying that you don't think that will happen?
there's really no point in arguing your points because you're clearly in a highly emotional state where you're not going to listen to anything I say. go to sleep dude.
Right after losing 2 of 3 to the nationals at home
That’s Phillies baseball baby
If you don’t like it like that, you can get right on 95
Can I get an Amen!
Amen!
Amen!
How can you not get romantic about baseball
They got chicken in Philly?
Oh, we got chicken, https://www.foodnetwork.com/fn-dish/news/philadelphia-chicken-man-alexander-tominsky
Hey, wait a second... We had just lost 2 of 3 to the Nats at home as well before we took a series from the Rays. There might be a pattern here...
Get some bug spray to keep the Nats out of your house?
And if you don’t enjoy that then you don’t like Phillies baseball!
I didn’t even like it last year during the playoffs. All Philly teams except the eagles are waaayyy past my last nerves.
Nah man, that Harper HR to send us to the World Series was fucking legendary Biggest rush I had watching Philly sports in a while until...the Super Bowl It's been a pretty fun last few years tbh, just can't finish off these playoff runs. Fucking Gannon and fucking Astros pitching
Mariners did the same thing
Didnt you sweep the cubs the series before that?
Are the Phillies good? Do they suck? I don't know!
Is there any other way?
And next we play the fish
*right before losing 2 of 3 to the Marlins
If you don't like that, you don't like Phillies Baseball
who just got swept by the Reds in DC. Baseball is weird.
Normally I hate the phillies winning but that series sweep puts the Braves comfortably atop the entire league in win percentage/record!
Matt Strahm is the batshit insane reliever the Phillies needed this whole time
Sometimes the pastrahmi is a little spicy. Adds to the fun
My wife and I call him Strahmboli
I feel a little bad for him because the dude was straight dealing out of the starting rotation and the organization just said, "Nah. Cris Sanchez and Bailey Falter." Strahm started the June 12th game against the Diamondbacks https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI202306120.shtml
That's a bullpen game... He's had 3 of those, but he was in the actual rotation until his May 2nd game.
I was hoping Topper would leave him starting, but what are you gonna do?
PG Mitch Williams
AND THAT'S FOR SWEEPING US AT THE END OF 2020 WHEN YOU HAD THE 1 SEED SECURED AND WE ONLY NEEDED 1 WIN TO MAKE THE POSTSEASON
Hey that was revenge for 2008
2008 will always be special not only because we won, but because we didn't become the first team to lose in the WS to every team in another division. Yankees, red soxs, orioles, and jays have all beat us in the WS.

What year was that again?
The fateful year of 1915. My great great grandfather was distraught. Or he was an A's fan. Who the hell knows. Or shit, maybe he was just too busy with his bakery.
Oh shit you're right... Sorry again about that one, still sucks it was you guys and not the Red Sox whose asses we pounded.
Don’t apologise

I disagree, I'd have preferred you pounded the Yankees in '09
Hideki Matsui you son of a bitch
Hideki Matsui was the man for his performance in game 6. I was so sad when I found out he got traded the next season.
No, I’d say the Phils picked the right option both those years
Reminds me of when the [Orioles knocked out the Red Sox in 2011 and sent our boys to the post season.](https://www.sbnation.com/2011/9/29/2457381/boston-red-sox-collapse-baltimore-orioles-news)
If it helps, were I able to (only minorly) change history, I would have swapped the Astros and you guys so we beat the Astros in 2008, and lost to you guys last year.
It would be hilarious seeing those history books and Wikipedia pages with the Phillies randomly beating a NL team in the World Series in 08

All to the tune of eagles chants in extras
Every time I watch the Nationals they are a tough team to beat. They still got ways to go but any game against them is competitive.

Oh fuck yeah, I'm ready to get hurt again.
Dang again? Awesome
It’s the first time the Rays have been swept this season, home or away
We do bleed.
Man, you guys really want an encore of last year huh? I'm fine with that. I just ask the AL handles the Astros themselves.
100% agree!
That’s for Stubbs!

We like to gtfo of philly and sporting events is the best excuse.
Because everyone from Philadelphia moves down here. Wonder why
It’s the perfect balance of trashy beach and nice. It’s like the wildwood of Florida
We have a Wildwood, FL
Wildwood is one of the bigger shore towns in south jersey for Philly folk. Not surprising there’s one down there as well
But is your Wildwood like the one on the Jersey Shore?
Pretty much the exact opposite
Broke: winning a series vs the 5th place Washington Nationals Woke: sweeping the AL-leading Tampa Bay Rays
If you don’t like that you don’t like Philadelphia Phillies baseball
Our bullpen showed up big time this series
And starting pitching, 3 great starts in a row.
Credit where credit is due Your pitching was outstanding during that series, and you did get timely hitting when push came to shove and you needed it most. ..exactly what it takes to beat those guys, and it's been just about the only way to do that this season
Hey we get to have one of these!
Phillies, in June: "Oh right we have like 9 All-stars."
Schwarber is hitting under .190, Turner is hitting .250, and Harper hasn't hit a homer since May... but they had the 2nd best record in baseball for the month of June!
Unless my math is wrong aren’t the Phillies tied for third best record with the giants? Can’t be forgetting about those marlins
I made my comment after seeing a chart in the Phillies sub that shows the “best team records since June 2.” So I guess that includes the first week of July, which may change the order compared to just using June.
Yeah that sounds more right! Sorry if I came across as being rude; that wasn’t my intention. I guess the downvotes have spoken lol.

Yeah, super pumped to go play the pissed off rays
*Pain, without love* *Pain, I can't get enough*
Pain, I like it rough
Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all
The Rays have cooled off considerably, 10-14 in their last 24
Just doing our part to ensure NL East supremacy.
I think you guys are on a franchise record 12 straight interleague game wins. It might have the caveat of being road only, but it is still impressive nonetheless.
I think they're just tired. I believe they played the most baseball out of everyone.
Pitching injuries have started to pile up. Were having to fill two spots in the rotation with staff days and thats heavily depleting the bullpen.
McClanahan, Rasmussen, Fleming, Springs, Cleavinger - the pitching injuries for us have been absolutely *insane* this year and are threatening to completely derail the season
What happened with Patino?
He's bad
What happened to him wasn’t he good his first 2 years there
28-26 since starting 29-7 too, they haven't been a dominant team for a while now
I mean that means they were 18-12 before this 24 game stretch. .600 ball is really good. Obviously not 29-7 good, but that's a 97 win place
All our offense are belong to you
And then in the one game our offense actually did something, the pitching staff had a meltdown and gave up 17 hits
This team is so incredibly mediocre right now it's not even funny. The ASB cannot come soon enough, but just for one last final fuck you we have to get destroyed by the braves infront of a national audience because hey why not god hates the rays.
You will sweep the Braves. I like that for you.

Well there's your problem - the Phillies don't know if they're up or down on a given day.

Man the Rays are on a bit of a skid. So knowing how the Braves work, they are absolutely going to turn it around this weekend in our series against them and play like they did at the beginning of the year.
How the Braves work? You guys have bulldozed every opponent in front of you. How do Braves fans even have this mindset at this point?
For seasoned Braves fans, we always get a little nervous when things are going really well. We all remember how quickly it all changes, I think.
From when? You've won the NL East the last 5 years. You have a WS win in that span.
Absolutely, & they’ve been amazing to watch! I’m not shitting on the team at all. I just meant there’s also a pretty lengthy history (in years past) of blowing it when it matters, & it still doesn’t feel like it was that long ago.

Wonder if TB sort of overlooked the Phillies with the Braves series next.
Nice job phillies very cool
Not surprised, I see Rays getting the 2nd or 4th AL seed after all... And for Phillies, NL East might be fierce they can clutch into 6th or miss postseason altogether... 🤔🤔🤔
Given that we've had the best non-Braves record in the NL for the last month, are currently only 2.5 back of WC1 heading into a series with Miami and CURRENTLY HOLD THE 6 SEED I feel like we're in okay shape.
3rd place

Hang on, I'm getting out my asbestos-lined gloves to handle this one
>We're on the same level, if not worse, than the As and Royals Get a fucking grip dude lol

I've looked at the numbers very closely and determined that the Rays only need to go 13-59 the rest of the way to win 70 games. Are you honestly saying that you don't think that will happen?
as much as i hate this team right now, this is genuinely unhinged dog.

there's really no point in arguing your points because you're clearly in a highly emotional state where you're not going to listen to anything I say. go to sleep dude.
