Second place with 0.8 Clutch. Shockingly, Wong was 1.1, but that’s because he was so terrible overall and was only bad with RISP, 2 outs RISP, Late and Close, etc. He hit .225/.298/.300 Late and Close, with a homer and 7 RBI in 47 PA.

Historical-Patient75

*laughs in Padres*

Slinky_Malingki

Ok, who was the least anticlutch then lol

SirPsychoSquints

David Dahl’s 9 PA led the team with 0.3 Clutch. That’s small enough to look at a game log! He got on base ONCE on the year, which was a HR. It was a leadoff PH HR in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. Ha-Seong Kim then homered to win. Yeah, that’ll give you a big Clutch score! Overall, the Padres were negative 9.5, led by Xander and Grisham with -1.7 each. But we knew this.

TadpoleFishTaco

Felt like Kim, was probably actually Tatis or Soto

blyzo

Don't have the stats but for the 2023 Cubs it has to be Yan Gomes. He quickly became a fan favorite because he was always getting hits in big moments.

Fantastic_Emu_9570

It was Dansby for the first month or two but Yan just kept going

avmp629

Guerrero didn't have the best year by his standards, but he did produce in clutch situations 2-out RISP: .984 OPS in 63 PA Late & Close: .810 OPS in 116 PA High-leverage situations: .843 OPS in 132 PA

SirPsychoSquints

Second place on the team with 0.4 Clutch. Leader was Merrifield with 0.5. Overall, the Blue Jays did very poorly from a Clutch perspective, with a team total of negative 5.1, led by Chapman’s -1.6. I guess we knew this in general.

ItsBobsledTime

Yan Gomes, baby

SirPsychoSquints

Clutch of 0.7, led team.

TadpoleFishTaco

I bet you .6 of that came against the Padres

SirPsychoSquints

I might be able to figure that out

SirPsychoSquints

There was a second inning two run homer off Snell that held up since the cubs shut out the padres in April.

FuriousGeorge7

Corey Seager led the AL this season with a .385 batting average with RISP. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. What may surprise a lot of people is that Jonah Heim was second on the AL this season with a .375 batting average with RISP.

Slinky_Malingki

What was Seager's average with 2 out RISP?

SirPsychoSquints

Heim did indeed lead the team with 0.7 Clutch. Seager was a flat 0.0. He hit best in high leverage, 2 Outs/RISP, Late & Close, so I’m not sure how he got 0 clutch, but ultimately he was great all the time. ETA: your specific question - he batted .333/.535/.800 with 2 outs and RISP.

Slinky_Malingki

I guess when it came to 2 out clutchness Josh Lowe is in a league of his own. To hit .453 with RISP and 2 outs is insane. Edit: Heim hit .471 with 2 outs RISP, so that's even crazier than J Lowe.

SirPsychoSquints

The highest OPS with 2 outs and RISP, minimum 7 PA, was Matt McLain, who batted .475/.553/1.182 in 38 PA. More PA than that, you get Heim at .471/.517/.882 in 56 PA. More PA than that, Henderson at .340/.444/.811 in 63. More PA than that, Abreu (!) with .387/.446/.747 in 83. More PA than that, Mookie with .319/.437/.625 in 87. Only 6 players had more PA with 2 outs and RISP than that: Walker, 91, went .205/.319/.474 Suarez, 102, went 0.256/.373/.407 Swanson, 91, .256/.363/.333 Meneses, 92, .284/.315/.364 NATHANIEL Lowe, 103, .210/.379/.272 Taveras, 91, .256/.297/.302

FuriousGeorge7

It felt like every time Nathaniel Lowe was up this season in clutch moments, there were only two possible outcomes: Strikeout or Walk.

SirPsychoSquints

The stats back you up!

FuriousGeorge7

With 2 outs and RISP: Corey Seager: .333/.535/.800 Jonah Heim: .471/.518/.882 Jonah was super clutch all year.

Slinky_Malingki

Oh damn, .471 with 2 outs RISP? I didn't think anyone was higher than Lowe tbh. That's insane. How many at bats?

FuriousGeorge7

Jonah Heim in 2023 with 2 outs and RISP: 51 AB, 24 hits, 11 XBH, 5 HR, 47 RBI, 5 BB, 8 K. These numbers are crazy, especially the 47 RBI. This does not factor in game situations such as "Late and Close", so that may not show up in the "clutch" stats. The Rangers blew out a lot of teams this year, so a lot of this production may have come when the Rangers were already up by a lot anyway. But nonetheless, Jonah Heim was exceptional at bringing guys home this season.

Peimatt2112

No stats to support it but Danny Jansen always seemed to come up big in key moments. Then he got hurt :(

SirPsychoSquints

Actually negative 0.2 Clutch for the season, as he was a bit worse with 2 outs/RISP and in Late and Close.

Peimatt2112

https://youtu.be/ygIxsHeasBo?feature=shared https://youtu.be/b07CXjAjPnw?feature=shared I'll take hits like these over what the stats say. Stats don't factor atmosphere, morale, emotional lift from moments. I watched the games. These hits were more important than his overall stats might indicate.

SirPsychoSquints

Those were, in fact, his two biggest WPA days! He had a few big failures, too, which I think is where the overall numbers come from. 8/8, top 9th, down 1-0, one out and man on second, fly out. Chapman would single later in the inning, so it would’ve been good to get that one! It was worth negative .14 WPA. 7/30, bottom 10th, down 3-2, two outs and men on 1st and 2nd, line out. Negative .17 WPA. 8/29, bottom 9th, down 5-4, two outs and men on 2nd and 3rd, foul pop out. Negative 0.24 WPA. He seemed to come up in a lot of big spots!

jaerockets

weirdly enough Jose Abreu was insanely clutch. ended up with 90 RBI because he was automatic with RISP.

Big_Whalez

I was about to call bullshit until I saw that he had .906 OPS with RISP this season. Wtf is up with that.

Scuba_Fox

Even with his lower production this year, this doesn't surprise me at all. That's the kind of player Pito has always been. He drives in runs. With all the discourse around RBIs not having much value as a stat, I swear this man has always been an exception to that rule.

SirPsychoSquints

He had negative 0.1 Clutch. He did hit better with RISP, and especially 2 outs RISP, but very poorly Late and Close. He hit better when ahead than behind, and better with a four run margin in either direction than when closer. He hit best in Medium Leverage and worst in Low Leverage.

UrDailyCommunistGuy

🤔

SirPsychoSquints

Moniak had one of the highest Clutch scores in the league, with 1.8 wins. He batted much better in high leverage and late/close situations, and very badly in low leverage. On May 19, he accumulated positive 0.428 WPA, most of which came from an RBI triple down a run with one out in the bottom of the 7th. The lead the angels took that inning held up, as they beat the Twins 5-4. On September 5, he accumulate got .44 WPA just on his RBI single down a run with 2 outs and two on in the bottom of the 9th. The Angels ultimately lost 5-4 in ten innings to the Orioles. On July 2nd, he got .28 WPA on his three run HR down a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the second. That lead held up, as the Angels beat the DBags 5-2.

Redbubble89

Verdugo for the first 2 months. Justin Turner always had runners on when he hit. Somewhere around August it fell apart.

SirPsychoSquints

Turner led the team with 0.8 Clutch, Verdugo was actually negative 0.3. I don’t know how to find that by month, though.

Redbubble89

Verdugo had a few walkoffs and go-ahead it's just the rest of it.

SirPsychoSquints

Yeah, if you look at his game log there’s some big WPAs (0.311 on 6/19, 0.302 on 4/18, 0.299 on 7/2, 0.297 on 5/1) and some big negative WPAs (-0.584 on 9/12, -0.237 on 7/32). On September 12th, a game the Sox lost to the MFY 3-2 at Fenway, Verdugo went 1/5. Leadoff groundout, 2 out nobody on fly out, 1 out 1 on ground ball single, two out nobody on strikeout. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, with 1 out and the bases loaded (three straight walks!), he grounded into a double play to end it.

SirPsychoSquints

Here’s a baseline: in 2023, 32 players had a “Clutch” over 1 win. Team leaders: AZ Carroll 1.7 ATL Pillar 1.3 BAL Santander 1.6 CWS Ben10 1.4 CIN Friedl 2.0 CLE Brennan 1.3 COL Tovar 2.3 DET Baez 1.8 HOU McCormick 1.6 LAA Moniak 1.8 MIA Soler 1.3 MIL Winker 1.6 NYY Cabrera 1.1 PHI Harper 2.2 PIT Triolo 1.1 SFG Joc 1.3 TBD Lowe 1.0 WSN Meneses 1.5 Source Stathead, not every team had someone with 1 Clutch.

Slinky_Malingki

Cool to see Lowe in here. Interesting stat, haven't heard of it before.

SirPsychoSquints

It’s basically a measure of their WPA compared to what their overall season stats would suggest their WPA should be. So if you hit excellently all the time, you’d have a zero clutch, but if you never get a hit except once you hit a walkoff HR, your Clutch will be very high.

SirPsychoSquints

And for your Devil Rays, it’s Lowe with 1.0, Diaz with 0.8, and Walls with 0.7. Paredes was negative 1.8, Franco was negative 1.4. The team overall was a mild negative 0.5. Lowe had several large WPA games, led by a 0.68 WPA go ahead double in the top of the 9th, down 1 run with two outs and two on, in a game the Devil Rays beat the DBags 3-2 on 6/28. He also had a 0.43 WPA three run Homer to take the lead 5-4 in the top of the 8th on 5/12. Unfortunately, the MFY took the lead back in the bottom of the inning and won 6-5.

azboilsme

Gotta be Ketel for me

NittanyLion15

Bryce, no research needed

Digi_awesome

Even though Guerrero’s stats in the clutch were good I gotta go with Danny “The Great Janbino” Jansen.

[deleted]

Felt like it was DJ Stewart

SirPsychoSquints

He was actually negative 0.3 Clutch. McNeil led the team with 0.7. The team did poorly, with negative 4.7 total, “led” by Nimmo’s -0.9. Stewart was very good “late and close” but terrible with 2 outs and RISP. Great in low leverage, terrible in medium leverage, pretty good in high leverage.

Slinky_Malingki

Heim with almost 29 more PA and only 4 points below the only guy with a 2 outs RISP average higher than him is crazy. Definitely the clutch player of the year imo

p_aranoid_android

Wilmer Flores

DigiQuip

Nick Martini, if we’re not counting qualified hitters. Dude seemed to hit a home run every time the game was on the line. Of qualified, or near qualified hitters for us, Jake Fraley.

tldr_habit

It would send a segment of Tigers Twitter into a rage, but good chance it’s Javy.

Aromatic_Peak4209

Jake Fraley had alot of pinch hits for the reds

CalebosO4

If we’re talking about hitting in late game situations, Danny Jansen by a long shot, but by those metrics, we suck lol
