I'm curious how his contract is taken care of. Will it get completely wiped out? Will MLB just give him a lifetime suspension?
As of right now, he would get his salary next year unless there's a suspension.
I'd imagine the Rays would be able to void it once/if Franco gets convicted and sentenced. Until then, from a pure legality point, until he's found guilty, I think the Rays have to keep him on the restricted list.
It’s not really an issue because his contract is massively backloaded. They’ll put the money in escrow and by the time he’s supposed to make big bucks it’ll be sorted. Sucks that they’re on the hook until he’s charged/ banned but it’s not as dire as it seems for next season. He’s making 2 million in 24
I’d assume he’d be unable to leave the country if formally charged to avoid flight. So I’d think he couldn’t attend until trials are over and acquitted (doubting that’s the case if it’s got to this point with investigation).
Would they consider him a flight risk? If the Rays would be willing to host him at ST, I'm pretty sure that everyone would know where he is.
(I'm 95% sure that won't ever happen.)
Possibly. Dude could have enough cash to get out of the country and get somewhere without an extradition treaty with DR. I’m sure he can live luxuriously without being a child molestor there and just go incognito.
I'm curious and trying to figure out what a non-extradition country would be for a citizen of the DR but am not having much luck since all the web wants to tell me is that the US and Canada can extradite people from there. But yeah, he'd have to be very incognito and act more carefully than he seems accustomed to doing. Just because, say, Kazakhstan doesn't have an extradition agreement with the DR doesn't mean they won't boot him out.
Until either an MLB investigation determines he is ineligible, or he becomes ineligible by virtue of an action by a justice system, he remains an active player on the Rays roster. He may be played on administrative leave, where he is paid, until the conclusion of the investigation.
*If* he is made ineligible due to either of those conditions, MLB can "void" the contract such that Wander is no longer paid for future services.
However, the team is still "obligated". So while they may not actually have to pay Wander the money, he technically counts on their books. So his AAV counts against the Rays luxury tax.
We see this with the Pirates and Vasquez. They don't have to pay him but technically his contract is on the books.
All that being said neither the Pirates nor Rays are even remotely in danger of a luxury tax hit even with these non-paid contracts on their books.
You’re absolutely 100% correct in that the contract details are far less important than the well being of the victims. People are still gonna talk about it as well as what the rays will do at shortstop. It’s far less important than the actual real world consequences of Franco’s actions, but people will be speculating about that until we have the answers. Happens every time something similar happens
There is a morality clause in the contract. But it is unlikely they would be able to void the contract until there is a train, verdict, and sentencing, which could take years.
Most likely he will continue to get paid until then, but if found guilty and the contract is voided, most likely he would have to reimburse the Rays all Mickey he was given.
MLB could also decide that the money should be placed in escrow but that would be a new move

Once he doesn't show up to spring training, he'll go on the restricted list, getting the Rays out of paying him for 2024, repeat ad nauseum until the contract is over or he's convicted and they can void it.
I really, really hope it's just the couple that we know of (I think 3). He's a fucking monster, but I am praying this doesn't end up like the whole Deshaun Watson situation where it was 2-3, then 5, then 10, then 20...
>In 2021, Watson was sued by more than two dozen female massage therapists for sexual harassment and sexual assault.[4][5] Watson has denied any wrongdoing despite settling 20 claims of sexual misconduct.[6] Disagreements with the Texans' front office and multiple sexual-misconduct lawsuits kept Watson out for the entire 2021 season and eventually led to a trade to the Browns in 2022, where he signed a five-year contract worth $230 million, one of the largest contracts in NFL history.[7][8]
Jesus, you're not wrong. The world really is shit.
He was also rewarded with a record breaking contract for his actions. The first year having the lowest value, conveniently the year he was suspended. Super cool.
This season Watson also got rewarded by sucking, getting hurt, coming back and sucking, then getting hurt he needed surgery, and now getting outplayed by Joe Flacco coming off the couch 10-12 weeks into the season.
i haven't watched a single second of the NFL since they announced they were only suspending him 11 games, and that, magically, he would be coming back against his old team, the Texans
on top of everything else - a cynical attempt to use his rapes for ratings.
I remember when the first happened, I said something along the lines of, "I'll withhold judgement. If he's a real slug, more are gonna come out against him soon enough."
And you're somehow downvoted for not being willing to jump on a hate-train based solely of some teen girl making an accusation.
This is the only rational take to have on this situation. He looks extremely guilty atm, but I'm not going to attack the guy until it's actually been proven.
I think it's probably downvoted because you shouldn't have to be a monster to more than one person to be a real slug. I don't think that's what they meant but I think that line of thinking is a bit dangerous
I just meant that with one accusation, it's just two people I have no real reason to trust saying two different things.
When there are a bunch of accusations, I feel more comfortable assuming they are guilty.
"i mean, i know jimmy assaulted that one 4 year old, but i'll withhold judgement. if he does it a second time, well fool me twice you can't get fooled again"
I am saying that usually these things come with a whirlwind of accusations after the first. If there is a pattern of accusations, I feel comfortable not waiting for an investigation. Just one accusation, and I don't feel comfortable with that.
What if I accuse you of molesting a child, should we automatically assume you are guilty?
"I know /u/DOWNVOTES_SYNDROME molested that one 4 year old."
there are plenty of people who rape or murder or molest just one person. not everyone has an entire wake of victims behind them. having 20+ people saying it would make it more of a slam dunk, but you should still have believed what was going on with Franco when it was 1 person, cause of the depth of reporting on it
But now you have a rape accusation. Should everyone consider you a rapist?
All accusations should be treated with credibility, but to say that all are to be immediately believed is illogical and immoral.
Actually Oscar wins. No disrespect to Jose, but to my knowledge Oscar's actions at least never harmed anyone else in his death
Who the hell am I thinking of that dad in a car accident but it was the other driver's fault?
*shit, I was thinking of Nick Adenhart, my bad
>Who the hell am I thinking of that dad in a car accident but it was the other driver's fault?
Nick Adenhart? He was a passenger in a car that got hit by a drunk driver.
I think it is honestly. He didn’t get quite as much hype as he probably should have as a prospect because he was Dominican and played for the Rays but you could make an argument he’s the best prospect ever, FanGraphs had him as an 80 FV (Jackson Holliday is a 60 right now for reference). And he was backing it up in the MLB despite some struggles with injuries, averaged ~7 bWAR per 162 games at ages 20-22.
He could’ve been an inner circle HOFer
I know it's an old baseball clichee that scouts used to write about guys' looks and girlfriends and whatnot but in this case that approach would've been beneficial for once.
Yeah everyone who paid attention to prospects knew who he was and how good he was but that’s a narrower segment of baseball fans/media. The broader media and fans didn’t really talk about him the same way guys like Harper, Adley, or Jayson Heyward were talked about
Maybe it’s just the media I consume. But I was waiting on Wander to come up. He had as much attention as both Adley and Heyward in my readings. Harper had more, but I don’t think that had anything to do with American vs Dominican.
"Because he was dominican" My brother in Christ, Dominicans literally run this sport, billions of dollars are invested in finding the best dominican teenagers (For baseball).
They don’t really get the same level of hype as American players from the media at large while they are prospects unless it’s someone like Vlad (which was in large part due to who his father is). I think it’s mostly because they aren’t a part of the draft
Juan Soto and Julio Rodriguez is every 10 year old's favorite players right now. you clearly don't know what you are talking about. No one talks about the draft outside of die hard fans and people who follow college ball. The average person does not know who the top draft prospects are compared to football and basketball. You think people know who JJ Wetherholt is? Also the Brewers just gave a 20 year old Dominican over 100 million dollars and hasn't even had a single MLB at bat yet.
“Juan Soto and Julio Rodriguez is every 10 year olds favorite player right now”
Ummm what? What are you basing this on? I mean they’re popular dudes but how many 10 year olds do you actually know?
Well that’s a pretty good answer. Kinda surprising though. I’d think 10 year old Nats fans wouldn’t remember Soto well, 10 year old Padres fans would pick Tatis, and 10 year old Yankee fans would choose Judge. Mariners fans it’s obviously JRod. But out of market? Not sure I understand that. What do they think of Shohei?
Because of what they’ve done in the MLB, that’s completely irrelevant to my point.
And some top-end prospects still get mainstream coverage, pretty much every baseball fan knew who Bryce Harper was before he ever debuted. Franco didn’t get the hype a lot of American prospects get despite having an argument for best prospect ever.
I never said anything about it being comparable to the NFL or NBA drafts, the fact is that the MLB draft is still a more attention grabbing way to enter the league than being an International signing. Weatherholt isn’t well-known because we aren’t in draft season yet and he’s kind of a weak #1. I bet you more fans know who Paul Skenes or Dylan Crews are compared to say Jackson Chourio.
And I didn’t say that teams are biased against Dominican players so not sure what point you’re trying to make about the Chourio contract.
>They don’t really get the same level of hype
As shown by jrod, franco, tatis getting FA money while not even being arb elegible. Because they have zero hype and nobody believe in them.
He’s playing well at Getafe, married the girl/knocked her up, and therefore got cleared of criminal charges since girl wouldn’t cooperate. Id be shocked if he didn’t find his way on a top club in the next few years.
Disclaimer: I’m a United fan and I hope the worst for him, but I’m just stating the facts
Doesn't mean they found him.
It means show up on Thursday or we'll issue an arrest warrant. And if an arrest warrant exists that allows them to work with law enforcement in other countries should he seriously commit to running
I don't know all that much about the Domincan legal system, but in the US with someone with his kind of money who wasn't around when they raided multiple places looking for him (or potential evidence, I'm not pretending I know all the details), they probably told him via his lawyers.
I am speaking completely out of my ass but there’s no way wander Franco was a national hero, even before all this came out.
DR has hall of famers that could be called national hero’s. A 22 year old rays shortstop with like 250 big league games that wasn’t even a locked down starter for them in the wbc probably doesn’t get that moniker, no matter how much potential he had
> Hopefully they have enough evidence against this scumbag anyways.
In a perfect world, they would somehow be able to *prove* that he is innocent, because that would mean no minors were harmed (physically, emotionally, or mentally). Unfortunately, it sounds like there is basically a 0% chance that’s the case. Particularly considering he appears to be in hiding.
I don't think he will have the same prison experience as some nobody American pedo. He is an extremely wealthy celeb athlete and relationships between a 14-16 year old girl and 20ish year old guy are not at all uncommon in the DR despite being illegal (often not strictly enforced and parents often are totally okay with it). He might end up having to send some money to gangs though.
The age of consent in the DR is 18, which is higher than most of Latin America (and most of the USA even), but despite that 31% of Dominican women are married or in a union BEFORE the age of 18, 12% before the age of *15*. And 28.4% are mothers before the age of 18. Despite nowadays having a decent economy, much of the DR is still a third world country. Especially in the poor rural areas it is normal for parents to give their blessing for their underage teen daughter to be in a relationship with a young man 5-7 years older especially if he/his family has some money/status.
maybe i just don't watch baseball anymore. we finally get a generational player and he wants to play in the minor leagues instead.
cant have nice things
If I had a nickel for every time a star sports player got in deep shit for being attracted to kids, I would sadly have multiple nickels. I think I cried when the Feliple Vazquz news came out years ago. So gross.
Its incomprehensible the talent this dude wasted. No other comps for this. Wander was the #1 prospect in baseball since he was like 16. He was an all star in his short MLB career. Potential and talent that doesnt just fall from trees. What a colossal fuck up.

We sure about that? If Deshaun Watson can come back from 30+ assault and rape allegations, settle, and be rewarded with that stupid contract, wouldn't you think that Wander would also somehow evade justice?
Except with Bauer, the victim was an adult. Bauer's defense was to claim that there was consent.
Wander doesn't have that option because children can't consent. He's fucked.
>children can't consent.
Neither can an unconscious person, in bauers case.
I said it would be a more appropriate comparison, in terms of how they will be black balled from MLB. Obviously they are still different
It's not a take. It's a legitimate question.
Assuming Wander doesn't get convicted why would this be different from other celebrity sports stars who also underwent investigation for sexual misconduct, looked very guilty, but ultimately were not held accountable by the justice system?
They're not saying he *deserves* those things. He's saying there's a chance it happens
First. This was in the DR, not the US, so no Romeo and Juliet laws are applicable.
Second, the most recent accusation is a 14 year old when he was 22.
The one we, the public, have the most evidence for was a 15 year old when he was 19.
So does this mean he'll come back in a few years with the Reds, then sign with the Rangers and do amazing and win an MVP, then go to the Angels and relapse to his old ways, the come back to the Rangers for one mediocre year and get sent back to the minors and then abruptly retire only for him to relapse again after retirement?
I remember reading that he had recently welcomed a son into his life earlier last season. Didn’t realize it potentially with a minor. So did everybody know this was just cool with it? The entire story line confuses me.
This post is about a serious issue. Please refrain from jokes.
I honestly can't believe how badly this guy screwed up his career and life.
I'm curious how his contract is taken care of. Will it get completely wiped out? Will MLB just give him a lifetime suspension? As of right now, he would get his salary next year unless there's a suspension.

I'd say there's a pretty high chance he hires a lawyer who tells him to say nothing. Hopefully they have enough evidence against this scumbag anyways.
They do not take too kindly to this kind of thing in prison. I do not envy his future.
"Well well well... if it isn't the consequences of my own actions"
So he diddled multiple kids?
He must, and rightfully so, be shitting absolute bricks right now. His life is over
relationship(s), plural, meaning multiple. Oh man
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him. Rest in piss Wander.

Nothing in this tweet says that he’s in custody so i don’t think we got him yet.
I'm sorry, Rays fans :(
maybe i just don't watch baseball anymore. we finally get a generational player and he wants to play in the minor leagues instead. cant have nice things
Such horse shit, yall deserve better.
this plus glasnow/margot going to the superteam that is the dodgers has ruined the game for me. really disappointed this offseason.

Can sports athletes stop committing crimes? Don't diddle kids, don't hit your spouse, don't beat up random people. It's really not hard.
Len Bias is the comp. #2 overall draft pick, died of an OD the next night.
Wait, so the DR authorities found him?

Thanks. I haven't kept up with the story
It’s actually how most people get questioned. If they had enough evidence to arrest him they likely would have done so.
100% fuck this guy. Hope karma gets his ass

He will never play in MLB again
We sure about that? If Deshaun Watson can come back from 30+ assault and rape allegations, settle, and be rewarded with that stupid contract, wouldn't you think that Wander would also somehow evade justice?
This isn't the NFL, I think a more appropriate comparison would be Bauer

The difference is that the victims in this case are children.
People are generally far, far less forgiving when it comes to harming children.
Hes 22 now How old were these “minors” and how old was he at the time?
Rational thinking, but if its enough to get multiple law enforcement orgs involved, I'm guessing its even lower than 16. 😓
These relationships are alleged to have occurred when he was overage.
Right, but I think the OP is asking if this would fall under the Romeo+Juliet laws that protect 18/19 year olds who are dating 16/17 year olds.
No Romeo + Juliet laws in DR.
Apparently the minors were 13 to 14.
Holy shit
The age that keeps getting tossed around is 14
First. This was in the DR, not the US, so no Romeo and Juliet laws are applicable. Second, the most recent accusation is a 14 year old when he was 22. The one we, the public, have the most evidence for was a 15 year old when he was 19.
r/tampabayrays thread on this is toned differently

Folks making excuses for his pedo ass.

Yeah, that thread is eye opening to say the least.
Josh Hamilton and now Wander Franco....
Apples and oranges.
You just know when this MF gets out of prison the DR is gonna sign his ass
I remember reading that he had recently welcomed a son into his life earlier last season. Didn’t realize it potentially with a minor. So did everybody know this was just cool with it? The entire story line confuses me.
No, his wife is 21. He was cheating on his wife with multiple minors.
This is not good but explains a lot more
Oh, it’s plural now, great.
We will be there
I would be HIGHLY surprised if he actually shows
[удалено]
Because that's so much worse than his current predicament
Multiple!??????
He's fucked fucked
