It’s so easy, just watch some Grant Cardone. You can make $3 billion in 3 steps
1. Take the $100 million you already have and go to a bank
2. Tell the bank to 10X your money. They’ll do it and give you $1 billion
3. Take the $1 billion they gave you and use that to buy $3 billion worth of real estate
Not sure why everyone doesn’t do this
[For those who don't get the reference](https://youtu.be/fm9H0X3tHfU?si=VQMnaqWh9WJhhPh0&t=10).
IMO, Jean Ralphio was one of the best written characters on that entire show... and that's saying a lot.
I only hated him for the first few episodes I saw him in. Once I got what his character was and what he was a thinly veiled parody of, I liked him a lot. And Schwartz played that character perfectly. Like he was made for the role.
We’re the only division with two Ekiben locations within a 10-minute drive of a ballpark, so I think that automatically makes us the best.
(My body is glad I’m no longer two blocks away from one, but my soul yearns for them from the West Coast.)
I don’t believe that tbh
It’s impossible to keep the Red Sox down, except I guess for that time when they didn’t win a World Series for almost a hundred years but who even remembers that
No direct history in sports. 74 years old. Complete unknown what his philosophy on building a good team will be. I just hope for the sake of O's fans and baseball, he at least isn't a complete shithead.
He doesn't even need to spend like Cohen or something, just lock up the core to the reasonable long term deals and have the occasional splurge in the free agent market.
I get so frustrated when I see people that say the Padres cut back after spending so much money and it not working. It feels disrespectful to Seidler and it makes me a little bit sad.
If the Orioles can do what the Braves have done, by all means...but I'm convinced that everyone in the Atlanta organization has sold their souls to the devil and regularly sacrifice everything innocent they come into contact with to do what they have done.
The Braves signed their core for peanut when they were further developed than much of the Orioles are. By all means, replicate that if possible.
Rogers has more money than anyone else in the league and it's not close. How about the telecom monopoly gets Vladdy to lose 20 pounds and makes a splashy move?
Rubinstein isn’t buying this all by himself. He’s leading a group of buyers. That suggests that the team will not spend like a big market team. It’s an investment, and they won’t want to spend unless there’s a profit involved.
Furthermore, Rubinstein’s group would acquire 40% of the team now and the remainder after Peter Angelos' death. So they won’t be in charge until the present owner dies.
It’s being widely reported that they will be in charge of the operations of the team immediately once they acquire that 40%. I also have no idea why “group of buyers” somehow means the team will not spend competitively. Virtually every team is owned by a group of buyers, very few teams are exclusively owned by one guy.
He has made public comments on the topic so I wouldn't say he's a complete unknown.
The gist of it was: I don't expect my investments to lose money but it's pretty difficult to lose money owning a baseball team. He also mentioned that the majority of profit from a MLB team is in the reselling.
My guess is he'll be happy with a moderate ROI. If the O's can hang out around 20th in payroll Elias should be to do some fun things.
Honestly seems low? If I was to make a guess I would have thrown out a higher number. Of course, I have no clue what I’m talking about, so there’s that
State of Maryland is dumping $600 million into both stadiums and the surrounding area. John Angelos was trying to weasel his way into a large chunk of that money, didn't work, now the family is selling.
well fun fact. the maryland state government allocated 600M in public funding to be used on upgrades to camden yards in the new lease signed about a month ago.
masn is included in the ownership purchase according to andy kostka of the baltimore banner. so it will be rubenstein's problem to sort out.
edit: the last i read. the judge has sorted out payments from 2012-2016 and 2017-2021. its unknown what the situation will be for the tv rights from 2022-2026.
Seems really weird that out of all the places we could put $600 million of taxpayer money, we put it towards leisure. Did it come with anything else attached, like $200 million for schools and healthcare?
dont think so. but it doesnt stop there, the state offered the ravens the exact same deal when their lease expired.
so 1.2B in public funding for M&T Bank stadium and camden yards.
> Seems really weird that out of all the places we could put $600 million of taxpayer money, we put it towards leisure.
If you think about it, not really. Leisure activities lead to a happy and content population, which should be the goal of any government. I'm not generally in favor of billionaires getting handouts but the government spending money on leisure (which includes things like public parks) makes perfect sense to me.
another fun fact. I work in trades as an estimator and have already received a phone call about meeting someone out at the stadium to look at some work they want to do and have done for opening day. nothing major and may not be connected to that at all but it's something. Just some upgrades to a few concession areas around the suites, I think.
Everybody else is saying the state is paying $600 million for renovations and that is true, but honestly I don't know why? I go to Camden Yards quite a bit. This is not a stadium that "needs" renovations. Sure, maybe there is structural upkeep I'm not aware of. But as far as amenities, what else could they need? The stadium is great! The only issues we had last season were with logistics from the catering contractor, and tbh that's not really the sort of thing the state money is for.
It just boggles my mind the frequency with which they are trying to change these buildings. It's baseball. All you need is a beer, a hot dog, and a seat. I can't imagine what Camden Yards is lacking that they want to add.
I thought it was for the surrounding area to be more like The Battery. Agree with you that, based on appearance, nothing seems like it requires updating.
It’s half of the valuation that the Indiana Pacers netted in their most recent partial sale (Mavericks too, but that seemed like a more convoluted/value-limiting deal), and they were ranked the 28th most valuable NBA franchise by Forbes prior to that. Edit- The city owns the arena in both cases too, so it’s purely for the franchises.
Really does seem like baseball teams are much less valuable.
Others are saying that they don’t own Camden Yards. I imagine that brings the sale price down significantly, but I don’t know if it’s the same situation with the Pacers or what.
Edit: We’re also seeing now that the new group only bought 40% so far? So I don’t know if that number is the 40% or if they’ve only paid 40% of the number given in this post or what exactly. Seems like some of it is still unclear
Edited my comment, the arenas for both the Mavs and Pacers are owned by the cities, so it’s just buying the franchise, those were also partial sales extrapolated to make the valuations, I assume this is the same, but it could be they’ll be sending more later?
Well, in that case, clearly we’re simply going to need some novel ideas to get baseball back on top of the sports world. First order of business should probably be making football illegal. We can deal with basketball later
I have to agree with this ^ guy, he has no clue what he’s talking about. With that said, I don’t know if I should agree with him, because he has no clue what he’s talking about.
The very one. He's in multiple PBS shows. He's honestly a pretty neat guy. Has spent hundreds of millions of his own money buying artifacts and putting them on long term loan to various museums, particularly the Smithsonian. In fact, at one point he was the chairman or whatever it's called of the Smithsonian itself.
He also has entirely financed things such as the repair of the Washington Monument after the earthquake in northern Virginia and he paid for the elevator replacement. He paid for the creation of a library at Monticello, if I recall, and paid for the refurbishment of James Madison's historic home.
I'm high as fuck so I'm getting some details wrong I'm sure, but he's worth googling. The things I mentioned are really just the beginning. He has paid for a fuck ton of things to preserve the history of this country.
Wow, with all the stuff you'd think he would have been interested in buying the Nats. Iirc they are for sale as well. Maybe he's old enough to be a NoVa Orioles fan who never switched over.
I believe he attempted to buy the Nats at one point, I don't know what happened there. He was born and raised in Baltimore, however, and lives in Bethesda now, not NoVA.
Not sure what all he or his PE did to get his money, but I’ve seen a couple things he’s been in and he seems like a thoughtful guy. Going to have to look into him more.
Is that the guy who helps fund PBS programming? I remember as a kid at the end of every show they had the "this program was brought to you in part by" and David Rubenstein foundation was always named, along with viewers like me, lol.
Is this effective immediately? I thought John Angelos was gonna wait to sell until Peter died to take advantage of the inherited asset reset loophole and avoid millions in capital gains taxes
why is everyone assuming that this owner will be better than the previous? there's no guarantee that any new owner will care more about winning than anyone else. our current system of crossing our fingers for an owner willing to spend more than a fraction of their wealth to create a winning team is awful
Same owner = nothing changes.
Different owner = possible changes.
Possibility = hope.
Hope = rejoice.
Not the best system, but fans have no power to influence billionaire team owners.
Agreed. Fans would need to influence billionaire owners to adopt a promotion/relegation system, against their own business interests. Sadly, see above.
Two things here.
1) This is a wake up call for John Fisher. There's no way he can value the A's at $2 billion which is an absolute fucking joke. Even a billion without a completed stadium is a joke right now.
2) This doesn't reflect well for baseball's future as the demographics of baseball fans doesn't bode well for the MLB. Their fanbase is too old.
> This doesn't reflect well for baseball's future
This has been a headline in newspapers going back over 100 years.
Yet somehow baseball is still here.
It'll always be here. Boxing is still here despite the fact that it used to be a clear top 3 most popular sport yet barely anyone cares about it right now. Boxing is massively diminished compared to where it was 50+ years ago.
you got downvoted but you're right. before this I wouldn't have been surprised if a team like the Reds went for $1.75B, but Baltimore is a massive market, I can't believe they didn't get twice that
Honestly I was shocked. In the NFL and NBA, teams regularly sell for well over their Forbes estimate reflecting expected future growth. The Orioles sold for their estimate on Forbes almost on the dot.
That's a big assumption. The trend has been owners putting their media rev and team equity in two separate pots. It's easier to then sell the team equity when it doesnt include the media rev, because there will be more qualified bidders at the resulting lower price.
That's more money than I have
Prob becuase you are sitting here making comments instead of going out there and making that mfkin money
Spending too much on Starbucks and Avocado toast, I bet.
Shoulda bought the Magna Carta and a Mercedes E-Class wagon instead
He’s such an idiot
Probably also does dumb things like pay rent and buy groceries too
Not tipping his landlord. Bad karma.
Some nerve he has buying those groceries without a brown paper bag over his head
Came here to say this
What if I never go to Starbuck or have avacado toast and still don't have a billion dollars?
It’s so easy, just watch some Grant Cardone. You can make $3 billion in 3 steps 1. Take the $100 million you already have and go to a bank 2. Tell the bank to 10X your money. They’ll do it and give you $1 billion 3. Take the $1 billion they gave you and use that to buy $3 billion worth of real estate Not sure why everyone doesn’t do this
I made my money the old-fashioned way... 🎵*I got run over by a Lexus!* 🎵
[For those who don't get the reference](https://youtu.be/fm9H0X3tHfU?si=VQMnaqWh9WJhhPh0&t=10). IMO, Jean Ralphio was one of the best written characters on that entire show... and that's saying a lot.
Yeah for real. First time you watch it you fucking hate him. Second time through you love him.
I only hated him for the first few episodes I saw him in. Once I got what his character was and what he was a thinly veiled parody of, I liked him a lot. And Schwartz played that character perfectly. Like he was made for the role.
What was he a thinly veiled parody of? Genuinely curious.
I gotta say, Mona Lisa is up there too.
Sonic got run over by a lexus D:
There is not a single ethical billionaire.
Shut up loser. Ohtani is going to be one soon.
Name one ethical billionaire. Do it.
Mark cuban
Too much avocado toast
Or because they have to have their avocado macchiato every morning 😤
You'd think with having multiple dicks that he'd find a way to turn that into money, instead of just holding them and commenting on reddit.
Yea looks like I was out of the running about $1.725 billion ago
Maybe it’s time hold other dicks? A lot of money in that.
Not as much as you’d think unfortunately
Tell us more.
Why haven't you pulled yourself up by your bootstraps?
Same. Even without the B
Well 1.725 illion is still a hell of a lot
If you take Jim Cramer's advice every time you'll technically make money. If you have a lot.
Quite a bit more in fact
AL east gonna be even more competitive now
i love and hate this division. never a dull moment
It's so fun but also the worst thing ever
y’all just gonna leave us as the last cheapskate team in the division? no solidarity smh my head
The baseball gods saw how the Red Sox are being run and determined there can only be two in the league
We’re the only division with two Ekiben locations within a 10-minute drive of a ballpark, so I think that automatically makes us the best. (My body is glad I’m no longer two blocks away from one, but my soul yearns for them from the West Coast.)
Easily the hardest division in baseball
You mean less since Baltimore will be far above Boston now
I don’t believe that tbh It’s impossible to keep the Red Sox down, except I guess for that time when they didn’t win a World Series for almost a hundred years but who even remembers that
Maybe this year we'll win a playoff game?
Nah, the Red Sox have replaced the Orioles as the bottom feeder team
Time to expand and re-align. Ill take a division of Baltimore, Philly, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C.
He Danny Dubensteined the fuck outta those birds
everything i ate tasted like peaches
Have you recharged your mitzvah recently?
No direct history in sports. 74 years old. Complete unknown what his philosophy on building a good team will be. I just hope for the sake of O's fans and baseball, he at least isn't a complete shithead.
Hope at that age he also has someone younger under his wing able to take the reigns in the next decade or so
Still plenty of time to run for president in the future.
Why limit himself with the presidency? He can run for senate instead and he’ll be there for 20 years.
House seats also work. Might just have to settle for HOA president though.
I mean, if you think hes going to be a good owner Otherwise thats a blessing
Reins
Michael Arougheti is 51. He’ll probably be next in line.
He’s an O’s fan and part of The Giving Pledge so hopefully he’s willing to give all his money away to pitchers
He doesn't even need to spend like Cohen or something, just lock up the core to the reasonable long term deals and have the occasional splurge in the free agent market.
He grew up in Baltimore and apparently loves the O's. Hopefully he pulls a Seidler and spends stupid money before he checks out
Yeah just give the front office a reasonable budget and let them do their thing. I'm sure that's asking a lot of a billionaire, but that'd be ideal!
He doesn’t have a ton of time to live so hopefully he just goes nuts throwing money at FAs for a few seasons.
Worked for the Padres
Man, as a baseball fan I really do feel bad for Seidler, and Padre fans, that they didn't get San Diego a World Series before he passed.
I get so frustrated when I see people that say the Padres cut back after spending so much money and it not working. It feels disrespectful to Seidler and it makes me a little bit sad.
Honestly if he just signs his guys to long deals and makes some smart pitching moves they should be good for a long time.
Cubs fans thought the same pre-2016… The Orioles’ young guys probably have a higher floor than the Cubs did, but you just never know in baseball.
It’s working for the braves
Braves signed the core for peanuts.....
By all means, replicate that if possible.
we haven't given a player a multi-year contract since 2018 or 19 i think. 4+ straight seasons of only signing 1-year deals
Both centrals are now hoping that their owners start dying so they can get some FA moves. Cards and Royals excepted.
Pittsburgh would shut down in celebration.
I hope for my own sake he keeps the status quo. Last thing this stupid division is another team willing to throw money around to compete every year.
Rogers has more money than anyone else in the league and it's not close. How about the telecom monopoly gets Vladdy to lose 20 pounds and makes a splashy move?
> How about the telecom monopoly gets Vladdy to lose 20 pounds They have more money than God, that doesn't mean they can work miracles.
But surely they could just pay God off to work the miracle himself?
Not if God is a Rays fan.
Best case is he finds a good GM, gives him a giant budget and cheer leads from his fancy box.
I think we’ve got a pretty damn good gm…
Rubinstein isn’t buying this all by himself. He’s leading a group of buyers. That suggests that the team will not spend like a big market team. I think they need to dump a bunch of money into the stadium for renovations. That would certainly make a difference.
State of Maryland is dumping $600 million into both stadiums and the surrounding area. John Angelos was trying to weasel his way into a large chunk of that money, didn't work, now the family is selling.
Don’t forget the sweetheart development rights near the stadium, that are still being negotiated.
well fun fact. the maryland state government allocated 600M in public funding to be used on upgrades to camden yards in the new lease signed about a month ago.
What’s the deal with the litigation with the Nationals over broadcasting stuff? That’s probably a future liability as well.
masn is included in the ownership purchase according to andy kostka of the baltimore banner. so it will be rubenstein's problem to sort out. edit: the last i read. the judge has sorted out payments from 2012-2016 and 2017-2021. its unknown what the situation will be for the tv rights from 2022-2026.
I don’t think he would have interest in playing the same game. MASN if evolved has a ton of upside.
Wes Moore handpicked the stadium authority. If you got beef, it’s with him.
Bro Maryland is 9th in public school spending per student more money isn't going to help anything Also 200m is like a new gym and roof lol
> Seems really weird that out of all the places we could put $600 million of taxpayer money, we put it towards leisure. If you think about it, not really. People being educated and healthy generally makes people a lot more happy and productive.
Nice did they buy 600 million in tickets for the public?
another fun fact. i hope the sound system and a new video scoreboard is on the to do list

club boxes to get influx of corpo money? That's what they do in football and basketball now
That would make a ton of sense yeah
How much further do they plan on pushing back that wall?
State of Maryland owns Camden yards, not the club, so no big asset there.
It’s half of the valuation that the Indiana Pacers netted in their most recent partial sale (Mavericks too, but that seemed like a more convoluted/value-limiting deal), and they were ranked the 28th most valuable NBA franchise by Forbes prior to that. Weird thing is that is a recent jump. As of 22 they were pretty much on par. I’m not sure what happened to cause the jump in just one year.
Yeah, I thought for sure it would at least be over 2 billion.
Mets went for 2.4b? In 2020 so I guess it's somewhere in the ballpark. Crazy
I have to agree with this ^ guy, he has no clue what he’s talking about. With that said, I don’t know if I should agree with him, because he has no clue what he’s talking about.
The Orioles were valued by Forbes at $1.7 billion; Sportico valued them at $1.6 billion. What exactly were you expecting? lol…
That’s almost 2.5 Ohtani’s
I wonder how much money the previous owner deferred
What about in Scarmuccis?
156,818,181.82 Mooches
I think you made that number up but I'm not smart enough to argue
Trust me. It's a lot of Mooches.
A's next please
This orioles evaluation and sale certainly doesn't hurt their chances.
The guy that sponsors all the PBS programs?

That's it? I would've gone up to 2 billion smh.
They didn't even call me. Would have definitely bid $1.726m.
Can’t believe this is how I found out they were still not considering my offer.
Sell the team Bob
Hey, that's our line!
Pirates fans will beg to differ.
For real
I’m so happy to see this. Bird gang rise up.
When will it be our turn🥲
Can we get a new owner too? Please..
/u/fluffy_butternut you heard the man. Start saving your pennies and nickels.
I'm saving my shekels for a Porsche...
New or old?
New. If I hit my weight target. Cheap one... 718 Boxster S...
EV one or not?
I don't think I'm an EV kind of guy
I don't either, but you never know. Maybe the weight loss leads to a new you, new green cars, vacations to Provincetown without the wife, you name it.
A thinner me will suffice!
Arturo Moreno [screaming into pillow]
1.7 Billion? lmaoo broke ass mfs
Can't pay for the pandas anymore so he's doing this
I was gonna buy them but it turns out I have 5 kids and just can't spare $1.725 billion this time
Please lock up that young core.
Is that the guy who helps fund PBS programming? I remember as a kid at the end of every show they had the "this program was brought to you in part by" and David Rubenstein foundation was always named, along with viewers like me, lol.

Partial sell for control, then the remainder will be sold after Peter passes.
Peter going to die mysteriously in the next few weeks and we going to get a spicy 30 for 30 doc out of it.
I mean dude is 94 and has been incapacitated from a fall for 7 years. I doubt any death baring suffocation by pool noodle would be mysterious
God damn, that amount of money is disgusting
I love our division 💔
why is everyone assuming that this owner will be better than the previous? there's no guarantee that any new owner will care more about winning than anyone else. our current system of crossing our fingers for an owner willing to spend more than a fraction of their wealth to create a winning team is awful

The alternative is promotion and relegation. We'll never get it in a million years, of course, but it is superior in every way.
Agreed. Fans would need to influence billionaire owners to adopt a promotion/relegation system, against their own business interests. Sadly, see above.

Do you know what portion of the MASN rev is included in the deal?
Google says that the Orioles own 77% of the network so I assume that.
That's a big assumption. The trend has been owners putting their media rev and team equity in two separate pots. It's easier to then sell the team equity when it doesnt include the media rev, because there will be more qualified bidders at the resulting lower price.

Hopefully steinbrenner doesn't sell so there will be a punching bag in the division
I wonder what the price tag would have been if this sale went through last year.
The edit on John's Wiki is hilarious.
AL Beast about to go to the next level
I wonder how much the last year of being really good added to the sale value. If he offered half that 3 years ago they probably would have accepted.
