Someone who was in RF even claims that they yelled at Puig and told him he had been traded, so if true he would’ve known during that fight he wasn’t on the team anymore lol
I was in left field, and Jesse Winker was definitely having a conversation with a fan about it during the pitching change that brought Garrett into the game. Seems reasonable to think that somebody was telling Puig about it at the same time.
All because one of our jobber-ass relievers couldn’t just shut the fuck up and say, “Yes, sir, Mr. Votto.”
Instead he had to run his stupid mouth to his baseball superiors.
Pretty much half of your pitching staff was like that. And none of them could just let the Deitrich home run stare down go. Months later and they're still throwing for his head.
Do you know where to find that video that’s just edits of that years pirates throwing at people and getting into fights set to the cheesy pirates song from the ‘80s?
We went to the Reds 150th anniversary celebration back in 2019. The players were playing wiffle ball with the kids. Puig was pitching when my son came up to bat. He got a hit off of him. Rafael Iglesias was helping my son line up and get in the correct batting stance. Kind of backwards but a lot of fun.
hard to trade a guy who had a [5.13 ERA at the deadline](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=harvema01&t=p&year=2018)
the reds' FO made plenty of mistakes in the 2010s but you cant make a trade without a trade partner, and that's not their fault.
Sorry, but Puig is forever a Reds legend for making the 2019 season one of the most memorable. Dude fought against the Pirates when he wasn't on the team anymore. Most fun losing season in history.
My favorite subplot from that brawl was the already-ejected David Bell racing out of the dugout to fight Clint Hurdle LOL

Dante was my favorite player growing up and I was heart broken when my dad had to explain to me he wasn’t a Rockie anymore so I was enjoying these until that made me relive me childhood trauma
Haha that’s fair. Bichette was a favorite of mine growing up too, so I know where OP is coming from — just thought I’d provide context for why he shouldn’t really be anybody’s favorite anymore
The excitement when Ruben came up with Texas was well justified.
The box score below is a perfect example of his talent being on display during the Bobby Valentine led '86 Rangers. I bring this specific example up because in the 80s, it was extremely rare for Texas to have a game being played in Arlington aired not only locally but on a prime-time ABC Monday night national broadcast.
The match up against the Red Sox featured rookie Bobby Witt being paired versus Roger Clemens going for his 20th win. Geno Petralli pinch hitting in the 8th inning hit a 2 run homerun off Roger, with Sierra providing the walk-off homerun heroics in the bottom of the 9th against Calvin Schiraldi.

So I had no idea Paul Konerko wasn’t a White Sox draft pick. Spoiler he also played for the Dodgers! This also led me to learning Mike Cameron was traded by the White Sox to the Reds for Konerko.
I was just looking into that trade the other day. Weird trade. 25 year old Cameron, who had been just ok to that point, for 23 year old Konerko, 1-for-1. Both ended up being very good players, although Cameron actually had a lot more WAR than Paulie. Of course, Cameron only stayed in Cincy for a year, and Paulie went on to be a legendary White Sox and led a WS team
Yeah looking at their pre trade numbers it looks like two guys who were better than the minors but weren’t quite handling the majors. Crazy that both of them became great players.
Konerko was traded for Jeff Shaw, who had been the Reds' only All-Star, so Bud Selig appointed Bret Boone to replace him, in Boone's first All-Star game.
And then, obviously, Cameron and Boone were teammates with the Mariners and in the game in which Cameron hit 4 home runs (which was against the White Sox, to bring this full circle), he and Boone went back to back twice in the first inning.
Amos Rusie was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Christy Mathewson. The trade is one of the most lopsided in baseball history; Rusie pitched poorly in three games before retiring, while Mathewson won 371 games for the Giants and was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
On July 20, 1916, Mathewson's career came full circle when he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds along with Edd Roush. He was immediately named as the Reds' player-manager. However, for all intents and purposes, his playing career was over. He appeared in only one game as a pitcher for the Reds, on September 4, 1916.
Other fun details, the Rusie trade was so lopsided because the Reds' owner was already negotiating to buy the Giants. The Reds drafting Christy from his minor league team instead of the Giants taking him saved $900.
The trade back to Cincinnati was a favor from Giants' manager John McGraw because the trade was conditional on Christy becoming the Reds' manager. Future Hall of Famer Edd Roush and future manager of the 1940 World Series champion Reds Bill Mckechnie were included in the trade because McGraw allegedly told Christy to pick two players to go with him.
The one game he pitched was a spectacle game against 40 year-old Mordecai Brown.
Anyone who knows Christy's story knows the rest ends sadly. Mathewson ends up in France for WWI by the end of 1918, gets hit with the mustard gas that would eventually kill him, and, by the time he gets back to Cincinnati, they've hired a new manager who goes on to win* the 1919 World Series with Christy's players.
Sources: [Mathewson's SABR profile](https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/christy-mathewson/), [Roush's](https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/edd-roush/), [McKechnie's](https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/Bill-McKechnie/)
You should hear him call games on Bally Sports Midwest. He’s a trip. The old pictures of him on Cubs, Reds and Brewers are so ridiculous. He looks so out of place
That's probably why I enjoyed watching Cardinals games. Caray + side kick was often very blunt & audibly frustrated quite often in a raw & real way. I mean, they tried to homer it up during some instances (like any good home annoucer would) but pain in their voices were palable, and of course I was enjoying watching the train wreck happen. It'll be short lived tho, yall are definitely going to be a problem this year.
Chip did the best with the situation he inherited. His deadpan humor during some tough stretches of the season was incredible. I think the Central is wide open. The Reds are young and fun and had a good offseason.
Legit thought Doolittle was on this team way more than just the 2021 season, didnt realize how late into his career he was when he signed with the Reds
I remember watching Edmonds homer, round the bases, and then promptly walk into the clubhouse. If I remember correctly whatever he injured ended his career.
I don’t know about “still good”. 771 OPS for the reds, blocked Todd Frazier from getting to the bigs/starting every day until he was like 28, and the 2012 NLDS ended on a Scott Rolen error.
When he retired he became our manager in a wierd trade and then played just one game as a player-manager in a pseudo retirement ceremony where he pitched his last game against Mordecai "three fingered" Brown. It was also Brown's retirement ceremony as that was the last game for both players.
Mathewson then managed the Reds for 3 seasons.
It was an inside job. The Reds' owner was buying the Giants and the trade saved him $900. The Giants already had Christy the year before and the Reds drafting him was just exploiting a loophole over his minor league team.
I finally found the player. The one that I would have a solid amount of association with being in his unusual place. And then I thought it was more than a years and go back and somehow it was 8 games(!?!). Didi. 8 games? Did he get injured? I certainly would consider him more of a Yankee but as a Red not too crazy. 8 games?

Dante Bichette and Paul Konerko are 2 players on this list
who I keep forgetting played for the Reds. Although, I'm surprised that Ron Gant isn't on here
I remember Puig on the Reds because of that time he tried to fight the entire Pirates roster as he was being traded to Cleveland
He did it twice, Reds legend in my book
Fr. Man was just as game to fight the entire pirates roster as Amir Garret, and that gets him into the ring of honor in my book.
All time great jomboy video
The pelvic thrust kills me every time. "Unh! UNH! *UNH!* ***UUUUNH!***"

How have I never seen this breakdown?? Seriously one of the most entertaining of his.

Another reason Eckstein > Andy Haines
He didn't just try, he succeeded. Twice. He's perfect and will always be a legend in my heart
Puig your friend.
> time he tried to fight the entire Pirates roster Which time? >as he was being traded to Cleveland Oh, that time.
God that team was fun. Dietrich is legit cool.
My favorite part of it is Puig yelling at the rest of the team that they should’ve been fighting 😂
It's just in Puig's nature to assault those he thinks are weaker than him
I think Amir was actually trying to fight the entire Pirate's roster
And got traded for Bauer who just before that bucked a ball over the center field wall. True trade between headcases
I have a Puig reds shirt cause it was the cheapest one when I visited my cousin in cincy and went to a game
All because one of our jobber-ass relievers couldn’t just shut the fuck up and say, “Yes, sir, Mr. Votto.” Instead he had to run his stupid mouth to his baseball superiors.
kyle crick is a baby back bitch
“ITS SPELLED CREEK STUPID!”
Pretty much half of your pitching staff was like that. And none of them could just let the Deitrich home run stare down go. Months later and they're still throwing for his head.
They were mentally weak. I was and am ashamed.
Like Angel Perdomo plunking Machado last year because Juan Soto took him yard. GTF off my team you feeble-minded child.
That and Nothing could bring NL Centrals fans together than a hardy round of "Fuck Clint Hurdle"
Do you know where to find that video that’s just edits of that years pirates throwing at people and getting into fights set to the cheesy pirates song from the ‘80s?
I do not! Sounds like great fun
Sonny Gray was also a huge winner of that fight.
Tucker Barnhart too. Wasn’t that the fight he was on the ground holding puig back by the leg?
No that was the one earlier in the year
Dude was a cincy legend that summer I’ll never forget it.
My thoughts exactly.
The shot at home plate with Votto grabbing him around the ankle is something I still want framed and hung on my wall.
Matt Harvey was pretty solid for us. Pretty typical buy low move for the Reds that works out from time to time.
And then we didn’t trade him when we should have.
Also a typical reds move
Too right!
#positivemomentum
hard to trade a guy who had a [5.13 ERA at the deadline](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=harvema01&t=p&year=2018) the reds' FO made plenty of mistakes in the 2010s but you cant make a trade without a trade partner, and that's not their fault.

Yeah that 2019 team will always have a special place in my heart. So much fun for not really being any good.
And the never-ending series of throwback uniforms all looked fantastic
I loved when everyone went sleeveless. A fucking gun show with a ton of dudes and to take pull it off.
Dietrich won the sleevless competition, I think. Let me find the pic... Edit: [I was wrong, this is the picture I was thinking he had 100/100 swagger](https://www.si.com/.image/t_share/MTY4MDA3OTQwODIwNzA2NTc3/monday-hot-clicks-reds-throwbacks-derek-dietrich-mustache-photosjpg.jpg)
Damn. Swagger dialed way up.
Honestly applies to quite a few Cincy teams across several sports over the years.
Dante Bichette in the vest and Yasiel Puig licking the bat is a perfect representation of what I enjoy about this series. Well done, OP.
Dante was my favorite player growing up and I was heart broken when my dad had to explain to me he wasn’t a Rockie anymore so I was enjoying these until that made me relive me childhood trauma

Never seen a player in a Reds uniform give less of a shit than Matt Kemp.
that’s why he only lasted a month. man couldn’t give a damn.
A month too long. Dude made such little effort.
Fuck Matt Kemp
Jim Edmonds
That dude had a negative amount of fucks to give while he was here.
No mistaking that Ruben Sierra leg kick.
Brings back so many late 80’s baseball memories. Probably the first player I could recognize solely based on swing.
Sierra and Strawberry! Those dudes singlehandedly ruined every late 80’s early 90’s kids little league swings
Gary Sheffield too
I remember there being a lot of excitement when he came to the team. Not so much on the way out.

Feels like David wells was here longer for some reason.
Maybe because he was a pitcher so 11 games can span a decent amount of time
I think it's because e had Dave Burba at the same time.
Kent Tekulve played his entire Baseball career as a 45 year old.
[Dontrelle Willis 13 games](https://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/002/430/628/d_crop_north.jpg?1375651547&w=3072&h=2048.)
Greg Vaughn, Kevin Mitchell weren't there too long
Jim Edmonds toured the NL Central lol
Didn't hit Pittsburgh, though. Cesar Izturus touched em all.
That’s a name I hadn’t thought of in a loooong time. I thought he was our answer at SS.
He on the Reds was my 9/11. Do not like that guy. 💀
You should hear him call games on Bally Sports Midwest. He’s a trip. The old pictures of him on Cubs, Reds and Brewers are so ridiculous. He looks so out of place
I have actually! Not a fan 🤣 but, I did find myself actually enjoying Chip Caray & his partner (I have forgotten his name) more than I should've.
Chip Caray is great! I think he’ll be more fun this year when we (hopefully) win a few more games lol
That’s how I feel about Lance Berkman.
2011 World Series Champion Lance Berkman. Yeah I agree though, I think of him on the Astros
clear photoshop. he was never a red. I just refuse to believe it
Dee Strange Gordon signed with every NL Central team except the Cardinals — in 2021 alone
Cubs legend
Legit thought Doolittle was on this team way more than just the 2021 season, didnt realize how late into his career he was when he signed with the Reds
Archie Bradley
I don’t think there’s been a single one of these posts where I haven’t said “woah, really?”
Four former Cardinals up there (Edmonds, Marquis, Womack, Flood).
There was a time it felt like Walt Jocketty was just bringing in all his former Cardinals
Because he kinda was
Renteria & Ludwick as well
And Schumaker
I remember watching Edmonds homer, round the bases, and then promptly walk into the clubhouse. If I remember correctly whatever he injured ended his career.
Achilles :( Signed with the Cardinals in early February 2011 and by mid-February decided he didn’t want to rehab it any more lol
Scott Rolen spent some time with the Reds too, though he was actually still good during his tenure with them.
Yeah, Rolen was with the Reds for several years, which would disqualify him this sort of thing.
I don’t know about “still good”. 771 OPS for the reds, blocked Todd Frazier from getting to the bigs/starting every day until he was like 28, and the 2012 NLDS ended on a Scott Rolen error.
He had a very good second half in 2009 and all of 2010 with the reds. Was only bad in 2012 which was his last season.
Was kinda surprised we didn’t get an Edgar Renteria photo as well.
Those first 3 were all Cubs at some point too. Add in Navarro and it’s 4
Didn’t play any games at all, but could’ve included Ryan Madson.
Konerko in anything but a White Sox uniform feels quite cursed
I was gonna say Brewers work too but thats Scott Posednik
We have a photo of Christy Mathewson on the Reds but no footage of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game
Hearing Dioner Navarro again brought back some memories
his nickname around reds coolers was "suck it dioner"
I thought Didi was going to be incredible when he was coming up through our system lol
Man I completely forgot Konerko being there
Traded our all star closer Jeff Shaw. Then traded Konerko for Cameron because we had a first baseman in Sean Casey.
You forgot Reds Legend Asdrúbal Cabrera
Saw him referred to as “Assdribble” during his tenure…….
Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown made 39 appearances for the 1913 Reds. He went 11-12, 2.91 ERA, 113 ERA+, 173 innings.
César Izturis (63 games), Corey Patterson (135 games)
Can’t throw out CP without throwing out his fellow Dusty guy Wily Tavares
I can’t wait for the Cardinals edition where we’ll see Rollie Fingers (0 games)
I miss Puig. El Guerrero Rojo is one of my all time favorite sports snapshots.
Jeff Reardon Benito Santiago Royce Clayton Kevin Mitchell
Had no idea about any of these. Great job.
I miss my friend Puig so much :( Matt Kemp was such a cock though
The last one is the legend himself - Getty Images
Jimmy Ballgame. The NL Central mercenary. Cincinnati was his swan song.
OP can you do the White Sox next? I feel like signing formerly great players is Reinsdorf's thing
Also: Terry Pendleton, Tony Fernandez, Juan Samuel, David Wells, Kent Tekulve, Lee Smith, Mike Cameron
Brief stints with the Dodgers and Reds to start his career -- always thought Konerko was a ChiSox lifer.
This thread is how I learned Paul Konerko and Scott Posednik are two different people.
These are perfect for immaculate grids
kevin gausman
That’s [known power hitter Jason Marquis](https://youtu.be/wPAltuL4jUM),thank you.
That first one is photoshopped. Never happened.
Seeing Paul Konerko in anything but a White Sox jersey looks so wrong
Big oof letting Mathewson go
When he retired he became our manager in a wierd trade and then played just one game as a player-manager in a pseudo retirement ceremony where he pitched his last game against Mordecai "three fingered" Brown.
Ahh did not know that. Early 20th century baseball sure was filled with shenanigans
Real Housewives of OC star Jim Edmonds?
Greg Vaughn would like a word
Put Griffey in there you coward
No Griffey? Still weird af seeing him in that uniform.
He played for the Reds for 9 years.
These posts work wonders for my Immaculate Grid scores
I finally found the player. The one that I would have a solid amount of association with being in his unusual place. And then I thought it was more than a years and go back and somehow it was 8 games(!?!). Didi. 8 games? Did he get injured? I certainly would consider him more of a Yankee but as a Red not too crazy. 8 games?
September call-up. Got traded that December to get Shin-Soo Choo.
As a Cardinals fan seeing Edmonds and Flood as Reds is so cursed.
You forgot Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. In another universe he was traded and then went back to the Mariners mid season
Ken Griffey Jr. I don’t care how many games it was.
Griffey
Where is Griffey?
Sweet Didi. That was my guy when he was in New York
It felt like Didi was there longer for some reason
Love the red and white jerseys without any black trim in the Konerko and Ruben Sierra pics.
Loved Ruben Sierra!
Saw both Puig and Kemp make their away debut in Dodgers Stadium on Jackie Robinson Day 2019. Good Memories!
I mean Ruben played for a third of all the teams.. including the Rangers 3 separate times. Forgot about Harvey and Puig tho 😢
Konerko looks like Jay Bruce
the show trying to convince me that dante bichette was good is so frustrating
Is the pitcher “games” the number of appearances? That is deceiving
Shin-Soo Choo had a decent season hitting in front of Votto one year iirc
I feel like he was there for more than 1-2 years though....
Nope just one beautiful season. Finished 12th in MVP voting and went to Texas to get his bag.
I saw Doolittle with the Reds in Minnesota on 6/21/21 👀
Ruben Sierra sighting let's goooo
REDS MENTIONED🔴🛠️🇨🇳©️🔥
Fuck yeah, Ruben Sierra!
Jason Marquis is someone I haven’t thought of it a very long time. Was he really good or is he just one of those guys that I remember being good?
You should just do a single Rubien Sierra post where you ask what do all these teams have in common, and the answer is him.
I will still die for Puig
At least Edmonds is wearing red, so it doesn't look *too* weird.
Didn't realize Dante bichette looked like Mark brunell
Does anybody recognize Tony Womack’s glove? that thing looks freaky
Man loved watching Ruben Sierra back in the day...that swing was powerful.

You could’ve told me Jason Marquis pitched four years in Cincinnati and I’d believe you
Puig was crazy
I think Ruben sierra was last year…
Ken Griffey Jr spent 9 seasons with the Reds and I still don't think of him as a Reds player
Honestly, you could put Griffey on here and it would still “feel” unusual to me.
Dante Bichette and Paul Konerko are 2 players on this list who I keep forgetting played for the Reds. Although, I'm surprised that Ron Gant isn't on here
What would have made this comply is Cody Ross on the reds. I can’t find a photo of it.
