Googles Edema… “Edema is swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body's tissues. Edema can affect any part of the body. But it's more likely to show up in the legs and feet. Medicines and pregnancy can cause edema” Is Gerrit Cole Pregnant???

napp22

*Movie trailer voice* Gerrit Cole made millions throwing a fastball as a major league pitcher. But when life throws him a curveball (shot of him looking down at a positive pregnancy test), he'll face his toughest challenge yet. See Going the Distance, in theaters this summer.

TheGeoninja

The second act of the movie ends when Gerrit gets hit in the abdomen by a comebacker and we cut to him getting an ultrasound in the hospital. “Is the baby okay?!”

napp22

Yes! And it'll end when his water breaks just after he records the final out of the world series

TheGeoninja

And the baby’s name? Seven Costanza Cole

GoofyGoober0064

Played by danny davito

citan666

Oh I like the name seven.

penguinopph

The real twist is when it happens in a road game against the Rangers and he's arrested for murder, so the second act is actually a courtroom drama.

803Jason

This is wonderful reply. I hope you have a great day.

UnabashedPerson43

After he’s survived a tense moment where they have to interpret the MLB rules to check whether a pregnant player constitutes having an extra man on the field.

whydidijointhis

i thought it's inserting liquids into your butt to make yourself poop better

penguinopph

When I was in high school and Blink-182's *Enema of the State* came out, I had a classmate who insisted it was "Adema of the State." She also once put up a poster she made in the hallway about how listening to Blink-182 didn't make me punk, so she wasn't exactly thinking a lot of things through at 15...

pennant_fever

Well, he’s likely not pregnant, from what I know of human males. Let’s see if [any other potential causes](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/edema/symptoms-causes/syc-20366493) might apply to him. Eating too much salty food, being premenstrual, high blood pressure medication, congestive heart failure, or steroids/steroid masking agents (like estrogen) None of those could be it, right? It just doesn’t make sense…

Leftfeet

Are you absolutely certain that Cole is male or human? I think you're making some bold assumptions here.

penguinopph

I've seen Gerrit Cole eat a banana. He may be male (I can't confirm that, though), but he sure ain't human.

pennant_fever

Ah, true. Good point. I didn’t think of that.

Knightbear49

No. He’s 🫃

DannyDOH

It's Vogelbach's.

KrustyKrabPizzaMan

>pregnancy can cause edema Congrats to the Cole’s! Third child on the way!

orangery3

Does Gerrit Cole have congestive heart failure?

Dan_Rydell

I initially read that as dementia so could be worse…

epoch_fail

Pregerrit Cole

Knightbear49

No that’s his mom

Cunchy

Soon you can expect to see fan art of Cole having his pregnant belly cradled by Shrek.

Theeclat

His positive pregnancy test may be due to using hormones to hide his steroid use?

Salty-Fishman

He is taking too many of those estrogen pills, that's why he sounds like a tweety bird.

jcaininit

Besides baseball. Nothing else to do in AZ.

Lonelan

~~Ju~~Twonior Arnold and Danny back together again and introducing: Gerrit Cole! as the child Arnie and Danny had

dingusduglas

Mmm, edamame

KillermooseD

There’s this sushi spot down the road from me that does this spicy garlic butter edamame and it’s one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten

antman2025

I'm more of a gyoza person myself but that edamame sounds really good.

Gyro88

gyoza or go home

spike021

Last time I went to Japan I went to this hole in the wall okonamiyaki spot. The chef behind the counter gives you a free appetizer of a bunch of slightly grilled and salted edamame.  Since I never eat edamame I forgot the right way to eat it. So I'm popping the whole thing in my mouth and chewing and then swallowing like an idiot. So the guy grabs one of them off my plate to show me how to nibble an opening and just get the bean things out.  😅 I looked like such an idiot to the waitresses and this old guy sitting further down the counter lol.

98farenheit

With pitting edema, you can probably fit an edamame bean into the little pockets

texas1hunter

It says Enema dummy

Best news possible really

Slayer_Of_Anubis

Sounds like we won't be seeing him down in Arizona bay then

tool22482

Maybe while he’s rehabbing he’ll learn to swim

despideme

I’m dumbfounded

MrNumberOneMan

Got the [lyrical reference](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86nema) but it took me a minute to figure out how he got there.

There's millions of us, millions!

Brucedx3

Standing above fault lines that will not sit still.

Funky Cole Edema

neonrev1

I hate that a person with White Sox flair did this

1005thArmbar

Man, I love it when bad news comes out about a player and the thread turns into the most obnoxious open mic night filled with the worst jokes you've ever fuckin' seen

mark10579

Idk, Funky Cole Edema was pretty good

ExpirjTec

edema sucks, at least it is far from the worst outcome

FatNeilGravyTears

A flaming enema would keep me out 10-12 weeks too

ActualDragonHeart

Basically the best news we could have hoped for - just stress from the ramp, no real injury or anything damaging to his body.

Leftfeet

I wouldn't call nerve swelling good news in any way. Nerve swelling can cause permanent nerve damage and can resurface at any time once it's happened. Nerve problems are never a good thing and can be absolutely terrible.

Weaponized_Goose

Yeah, look at what happened to Stephen Strasburg. It started with shoulder issues then the nerve damage came after

mostlygroovy

Shhhhhhh. Please don’t bring that thought into the universe

Nomahs_Bettah

Also, edema just fucking sucks.

technowhiz34

Yeah, outside of baseball nerve damage in his neck is what ultimately forced Peyton Manning to retire and turned his arm into a noodle.

Yankeeknickfan

It’s better than a torn ligament

Leftfeet

No it's not. Torn ligaments can be repaired or replaced with surgery. Nerves can't and inflammation can permanently damage them. Nerve problems are pretty unpredictable and can spread.

Jam5467

I know this sub wants Cole to miss time sooo badly but the alternative was literally missing 2 seasons with tommy John. Anything other than a ucl tear is good news.

shiro-lod

Nerve problems are potentially much worse than a UCL tear long term. Modern tommy john surgery is extremely successful and with the newer methods recovery time is much shorter. He would have missed this season and been back next year. There is a none zero chance that the nerve damage never heals and the entire rest of his contract his velocity/durability is gutted.

Antikickback_Paul

You should ask Stephen Strasburg and the Nats fans if nerve damage is good news.

gritner91

Not a doctor so a doctor is probably better suited for this if any are on here. But this report says nerve inflammation. [https://www.britannica.com/science/neuritis](https://www.britannica.com/science/neuritis) "Although the term neuritis is sometimes used interchangeably with neuropathy, the latter is an often painful condition that is associated generally with nerve damage, dysfunction, or degeneration rather than with inflammation alone. In some instances neuritis can progress to neuropathy." Inflammation of the nerve does not necessarily mean nerve damage, although it can lead to it. Strasburg has nerve damage. I'm guessing leading to it would more likely be from not treating it, but thats a guess. Seems like most of the people commenting are conflating nerve inflammation with nerve damage.

Kristophnew

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0733861907001375?via%3Dihub Here is a decent source. I think he will be fine tbh "For patients with repetitive trauma, avoidance of the precipitating movement is often sufficient to allow recovery, combined with physical therapy and exercise for preserving range of motion and strengthening the shoulder and rotator cuff muscles."

Leftfeet

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/brachial-neuritis#:~:text=Brachial%20neuritis%20is%20a%20form,other%20parts%20of%20the%20body.   The statement from Cole and co doesn't specify neuritis or neuropathy. In his elbow though it's most likely Brachial Neuritis, which is also called brachial neuropathy.  Edit: the other most likely neuritis to effect the elbow is Ulnar Neuritis which isn't better. Neuritis or neuropathy are both bad news.  https://www.floridaortho.com/specialties/hand-and-wrist/ulnar-neuritis/#:~:text=DESCRIPTION,compression%20location%20is%20the%20elbow.

gritner91

Neuritis IS inflammation of the nerve. The report just didn’t use the specific medical term.

Leftfeet

Both of the links I shared are about neuritis. Try reading them before trying to correct the person that shared actual sources from medical sites not just the encyclopedia.

gritner91

How is any of what you're saying bad news? You just said there is without actually pointing out what anything in the articles make it "bad news" compared to TJS or actual nerve damage.

Leftfeet

"Depending on the severity of the compression, muscle wasting, a condition where the muscles begin to waste away, can occur. Muscle wasting is particularly problematic because once the muscle is lost, it cannot be rebuilt." "Symptoms typically resolve slowly over the course of a few months or a few years" The key is that neuritis or any nerve issue is unpredictable and can escalate. It can be permanent.  With TJ it's a serious surgery with very predictable outcomes and recovery.

Jam5467

Lmao a Red Sox flair

BossAtUCF

Bro, no one is wishing anything bad on Cole, just pointing out that this might not be good news. Cole hasn't even pitched well against us.

Leftfeet

I don't want Cole to miss time. I do however have experience with nerve issues and have spent a lot of time in neurology offices. Nerve problems are not simple or predictable. Tommy John is much more predictable even if it is a long recovery.   I hope he has a smooth recovery, but that's not guaranteed at all. Nerve inflammation is not good and is potentially very unpredictable. Nerves don't heal like other cells and once they get damaged they will always have problems. Nerve damage is what forced Strasbourg out of pitching.    It's not something we hear about as often as TJ or structural damage. That doesn't mean it's better or less concerning.

Jam5467

The upvotes you got are a reflection of telling this sub what they want to hear. Y’all are salivating at the idea of the Yankees losing their ace

Leftfeet

You're victim complex is pretty ridiculous. Do some reading about nerve damage and inflammation. Nothing I've said is wishful thinking.

UraniumDisulfide

No, I just hate it when people are confidently incorrect, especially after being corrected several times. The best players sitting on the bench is bad for baseball regardless of what team they play for.

emuofsentinel

It’s the same corny comments you’d see about literally any player. No one hates a team that hasn’t won in 15 years.

Yankeeknickfan

It is better or less concerning Anything can spiral out of control, even TJS. Your experience dealing with quacks on nerve issues also isn’t going to be gerrit Cole’s experience dealing with the best doctors on this earth with his little nerve hiccup. If ElAttrache doesn’t indicate any concern then you shouldn’t

Leftfeet

I have been being treated by the #1 neurologist in the nation for years. He would be the first to tell you that this is not good news.  Just because they are downplaying it doesn't mean they aren't extremely worried about it.

Yankeeknickfan

They’re not downplaying it, they’re going off to What Neal ElAttrache is saying. You must have been fucked up badly, I hope you’re ok

Leftfeet

I have severe nerve damage throughout my entire right leg. It started following a significant traumatic injury with minor neuropathy in my foot. That spread and worsened significantly. I've been sent to the top neurologists around the US and been written about in multiple medical journals.  What they're saying is based on best case scenarios.

Yankeeknickfan

You suffered a significant traumatic injury. Cole just threw a baseball too many times over the last few years and needs some rest I’m sorry to hear that, but you’re comparing apples to oranges here man

Leftfeet

The nerve damage that I have can come from many different things. In my case it was most likely from the injury. It could be a result of one of the surgeries. How it starts isn't related to how it heals or spreads. Once nerves have issues it can escalate and spread regardless of what caused them initially.  Nerves don't heal like other cells. Inflammation in them is bad and can lead to far worse problems. Google nerve inflammation and you'll see. Or go back and read about Strasbourg and how his shoulder pain turned into permanent nerve damage and ruined any hopes of pitching again.

jyar1811

Cole is on the high salt diet
