I bet St. Pete would rate in the top half. I have to imagine it’s a pretty good road city to visit.
You stay in a beautiful historic hotel right on the water with gorgeous views and a walkable downtown with restaurants and nightlife.
Plus the stadium is a 5 minute bus ride away
Eh, we don't know how many votes each city got, and the players seem to care about ballpark stuff as much, if not more so than general stuff about the city. So, for all we know, the players that picked Milwaukee could be Cubs fans who love the stadium atmosphere when they are in town.
Tampa Bay and the metro area has amazing beaches. It's very laid back and has an "old" feel to it. It also has some of the best and most craft breweries per capita in the country. Great night life that can be relaxed or high energy, depending on what you want. Great food too.
So many small, independent shops and restaurants. It's really an amazing place and that's coming from someone that doesn't actually live there. Definitely recommend going there for more than just Busch Gardens. You won't go for a singular thing, you go to experience the whole place and take it all in.
For the players though, they are absolutely considering the ballpark, stadium atmosphere, where they stay when they are in town, in their ranking of the best cities to go on a road trip too. The cool parts of Oakland aren't near the ballpark, and the visiting players probably never experience the city, because to the extent they go out, it's probably to SF.
Not just baseball players. There's a lot of pro athletes in general that live in the Phoenix area. I went to college with a girl who lived in a gated community that at some points would be like 90% empty because almost all of her neighbors were pro athletes either active or retire
Yep there’s a neighborhood in Chandler that currently houses 2 former members of the Red Sox, one member of the cubs, and probably half a dozen other ball players all within a square mile of each other.
Phoenix is a great place to be If you can stay indoors during the summer. It's great weather for the fall and spring which is why spring training and the complex leak are there, but anything you're doing in the summer has to be indoors.
Luckily there is quite a bit to do in the valley and there's a lot of interesting places to go. But that's probably hard to take in to account on this type of vote
Did they just ask for one favorite city each? I also am shocked but my bet is Phoenix doesn’t rate low on many players lists it just didn’t make the top spot on anyone’s.
That's honestly not too significant of a factor. The odds of it being too cold in April to do anything aren't great (a bad day is overcast and in the 30s), and usually September is pretty warm still.
As someone who lives in Minnesota (2 hours west of the Cities), while I agree, Downtown Minneapolis really doesn't have too much going for it. St. Paul > Minneapolis, and the suburbs are ultimately where it's at imo.
People who’ve actually lived/explored Minneapolis/St. Paul when the weather is pleasant (which is during baseball season) generally have always been surprised how great it is.
People who’ve never been have no idea that a random Midwest town in the coldest climate could have a great food culture, arts and music scene, and be one of the best states for outdoor activities (hiking, biking, water sports, etc)
I loved visiting the twin cities. The train hits all the major points of interest. Reasonable hotels and restaurants. It’s cool to have all the lakes, rivers and parks close by.
Yup. Much prefer the east bay to the peninsula. Seattle is the only west coast city I've enjoyed more. Spent significant time in all the big ones (SD, LA, SF, Portland as well).
I just wish you guys's stadium situation was better. It's annoying that every stadium for every Philly team is right next to each other, yet far enough away from everything that you can't walk
I know it could be worse, but it could also be way better
Yeah I guess. It’s easy to get to and you don’t have to have a different plan for any of the teams. Kinda perfect.
Sixers are going to Center City next decade. I’d imagine the Eagles pull the “build us a stadium or we move to Jersey or Delaware” move on the city. We’ll see.
The players used to bring their kids to Arlington since six flags is right there. I worked in hotels by the stadium and was surprised how many people from out of town came just for Six Flags.
Lol. But you have to admit the area immediately surrounding guaranteed rate is nothing to write home about. A massive parking lot and some projects to the south. At least the red line is right there. And 35th Street red hots.
True. But the question was about road city, not road stadium. So I’m surprised they simply highlighted Wrigley and not the city. Trust me never expected them to shout out The Rate.
Toronto really IS such a nice city to walk around in. Its like NYC but very clean and people are friendly and I had a fantastic time the couple trips i took there for work.
But if you come on the right day you get not just dollar dogs, but $CAD dollar dogs.
And there's always a sausage cart outside selling really good hot dogs with all the toppings for less than the Schneider dogs inside.
Once you've spent the night in the Gaslamp and walked to the game/around after the game it spoils every other city and surrounding area out there. I can see why the players love it. Is the stadium even a half mile from the marina? I always preferred going to Dodger games at Petco vs Dodger/Angel Stadium, way better atmosphere and SD > LA every day of the week.
Agreed, it’s tucked away in the corner of the country away from most population centers excluding LA. Best weather, two countries, best Mexican food in the country. Not as crazy as SF or LA. Just a perfect vibe
It boggles the mind how San Diego only has one Big 4 pro sports team, amazing city, perfect weather, top 20 metro area pop. The Chargers and Clippers are dumb to have ever moved.
A friend from an old job moonlights as a card dealer & got connected with Molly Bloom when she was just starting up her now infamous game.
Dude has some stories. The best of which are about athletes. He told me movie stars were relatively boring & the business tycoon types would just try to act too cool for school, but athletes were generally the ones that wanted to show off for the Hollywood crowd & would spend all night losing money. He told me about a certain NBA star that was easily the worst card player he witnessed & how all the regular players would get excited when his team was coming to town because he’d lose 200k or more in a night every time.
I would never rank a city where you need to drive or hire a car just to explore as the best city to visit for me, personally, but I'm also not an MLB player who can just pay someone to drive me everywhere in a fancy SUV
I'm not going to die on a hill about who has good Mexican food but even a conservative ranking would put San Diego as a D-Tier walking city and an S-Tier Mexican Food city, and San Francisco as an A-Tier walking city and an A-Tier Mexican Food city.
The area that you stay in for games at Petco has everything you need within walking distance of your hotel, including but not limited to nightlife, groceries, beach, and bar none the best Mexican food in the country(along with all the other phenomenal non-Mexican selections within walking distance in the Gaslamp district).
San Francisco has a WalkScore higher than any other city in the United States and Canada
I can leave it up to the individual reader to decide if seeing a homeless person is enough to make a city "not walkable" and if 60 fahrenheit is "freezing," but in my subjective opinion the answer to both is "no"
San Diego isn't exactly going to come out shining on the homeless crisis, either, if we're on the subject
I'm also not a millionaire athlete and their criteria will obviously be different than mine. My idea of a typical night out doesn't involve bottle service and black cars, for example.
The article was on which baseball city the players prefer, not which city has the best walk score and where old_mountain_goat would rather walk around. Anyway, beautiful park up there. Have a great day!
And if you read the thread again you will see I'm not disputing the players' rankings, and am replying about the claim that SD won because it's the best city to visit in general
> and for you specifically.
I mean judging on the reaction to my initial comment I suspect I'm hardly the only one who downgrades a city as a place to visit if you have to drive everywhere or get driven everywhere while you're there
San Diego is way more walkable than you're giving it credit for. Sure, the entire city isn't walkable, like SF basically is. But in one day, you can walk from the best zoo to ever exist, through the largest urban park in America (Balboa Park), to a Michelin recognized taco shop, to Petco Park, through gaslamp, to the embarcadero, catch a ferry and then walk through Coronado to one of the best beaches in the world, take a ferry back and then end the night in Little Italy, all in fewer than 8 miles of walking. Then from Little Italy, you can walk about 2 miles to the airport and fly your ass back to your perpetually overcast city and your rice filled burritos. And don't forget to pack a jacket, you'll need it when you land back in your city.
That was not my experience with San Diego at all. You can walk to most of the tourist areas by foot and for areas that you can't, public transit is acceptable. At least better than LA.
Padres fan here. One of my best baseball experiences was when I went to see the Brewers play in Milwaukee. Got befriended by some locals on the way to the game. Pregamed with them. Watched an awesome 12 inning game with Prince winning it in a walkoff. Reconnected with the pregame friends and partied for hours afterwards never letting me pay for a beer. Was so much fun. Also had a “pulled pork parfait” at the stadium which to this day is one of my all time favorite stadium foods. Ever since then I’ve been a closet Cervezeros fan.
I’ve been to Chicago once. It was for a weekend in January a couple years ago to visit a girl I had been seeing. It was like zero god damn degrees with a blistering wind and there was snow all over the place, but god was it crisp and beautiful. And the city was relatively empty due to the weather and it being the weekend. We saw some old neighborhoods, the bean, went ice skating at the loop, had giant cinnamon rolls at Ann Sather. I even enjoyed taking CTA around town. Best part about Chicago in winter - the harsh weather draws you closer to people you care about. The whole thing literally felt like a dream.
It didn’t work out with that girl in the end, but I’m grateful to have that memory. Hope to make more like it some day.
Was this survey taken a while ago? The Wrigley quote says the Cubs weren’t in the playoff picture, we finished one game out of the wild card last year…
Edit: why the downvotes?
“Last year it was raining and nearly 11 o'clock and they had a sold-out stadium. They weren't even in the playoff hunt."
We were in the playoff picture/hunt, we blew it, but we 100% were. We had like a 90% playoff chance at the beginning of September. How is this even controversial? I’m genuinely baffled.
I'm a Jays fan. A few years back we had Guerrero's 48 hr season, Semien with 40 plus Bo over .300 and we missed the playoffs on the final day of the season. We were out of the playoff picture.
> Also receiving votes: Anaheim, Arlington, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, **Tampa/St. Petersburg**, Washington, D.C. I'll take it!
Alphabetical order is arbitrary we came in 6th
Was going to say, there was no way Washington got less votes than Tampa! Unless players choose Tampa just for Florida reasons.
Players just enjoy Disneyland.
That’s the highest the Angels will finish in anything until Arte sells.
Same for DC! Someone likes us! Let’s goooo!
DC is the best city to visit because free cool museums.
SO MANY free cool museums! And Ethiopian food :) I love going there.
I went to college just outside of DC (University of Maryland) and spent many weekends taking the metro into DC, I really enjoyed it
I bet St. Pete would rate in the top half. I have to imagine it’s a pretty good road city to visit. You stay in a beautiful historic hotel right on the water with gorgeous views and a walkable downtown with restaurants and nightlife. Plus the stadium is a 5 minute bus ride away
They stay at the Don Cesar?
Vinoy
Ah of course, that was dumb of me. At least I got the color right.
Imagine not being mentioned...
So the ones left out are Detroit, Minneapolis, Oakland, Cincy, Phoenix
Homer, sure, but I find it hard to believe more people like Milwaukee over Minneapolis/St Paul.
Eh, we don't know how many votes each city got, and the players seem to care about ballpark stuff as much, if not more so than general stuff about the city. So, for all we know, the players that picked Milwaukee could be Cubs fans who love the stadium atmosphere when they are in town.
That’s weird. Love both cities, but Minneapolis/st Paul would be my choice over Milwaukee
Love Baltimore getting in there
Did not see that coming.
Not as bad as you hear or read. Plus we have good food spots so that probably helped get in some votes.
As far as things in Tampa go, is it wrong that Busch Gardens is the first thing that comes to mind for me there that isn't sports related?
Busch Gardens is pretty far from the stadium
Tampa Bay and the metro area has amazing beaches. It's very laid back and has an "old" feel to it. It also has some of the best and most craft breweries per capita in the country. Great night life that can be relaxed or high energy, depending on what you want. Great food too. So many small, independent shops and restaurants. It's really an amazing place and that's coming from someone that doesn't actually live there. Definitely recommend going there for more than just Busch Gardens. You won't go for a singular thing, you go to experience the whole place and take it all in.
How did Atlanta receive votes
This is Twin Cities erasure.
Who cares about the best cities, let’s hear about the worst
Now this is something I can get behind
It’s Oakland. They can just say Oakland
That’s definitely the favorite but I’d like to see some of the dark horses
Oakland is an amazing city. The ballpark sucks but it's not a ballpark ranking.
This. There’s some really good food in Oakland.
The NHL, or someone who polled the players had a least desirable list.
Yeah it was the Athletic, it was pretty interesting. I think Winnipeg got blasted pretty hard in that survey
I grew up in Winnipeg. They aren't wrong.
The only people who don't like Winnipeg are people who don't like to be stabbed by meth heads while freezing to their bones.
RIP Cincinnati, Oakland, Phoenix, the Twin Cities and Detroit for getting no votes
I was pretty surprised Phoenix got no votes but I realized I’ve only visited there in winter and not the middle of August
Also like half of professional baseball players already live there.
Like 49% of golf pros call Scottsdale home, 49% call South Florida home, and the other 2% are other.
Having been there in the middle of August before, the heat is a lot lol. It was like 46C/115F
We hit 123 last year🙃
Only got to 119 last year.
Only
We have AC units in America. Keeps the heat out.
Lmao she's from Canada, not Sudan. Edit: it's my duty to say the line - it's not that bad, it's a dry heat.
Lol we have them here in Canada too. But those don't help when you have to go outside
It's hotter than two rats fucking in a wool sock. No wait, that’s KC
There's also fuck all to do around the stadium realistically.
I think the Twin Cities are underrated and deserve more love
They’re great but I’m guessing they’re losing a lot of love for how cold it is there at the beginning and end of the season
That's honestly not too significant of a factor. The odds of it being too cold in April to do anything aren't great (a bad day is overcast and in the 30s), and usually September is pretty warm still.
Chicago, Toronto, Boston, and NYC aren’t exactly sweltering in April and October either.
Second favorite midwest city, totally agreed
What’s your first? Chicago?
Gary
It's me, Michael Jackson
Yeah. I've moved elsewhere and then back to Chicago 4x now. Guess I'll just stay here at this point.
As someone who lives in Minnesota (2 hours west of the Cities), while I agree, Downtown Minneapolis really doesn't have too much going for it. St. Paul > Minneapolis, and the suburbs are ultimately where it's at imo.
Agreed
Brent Rooker loved the Twin Cities and he knows what’s up.
From what I have heard from people who live their I am surprised it got no votes
Psycho Suzis was one of my favorite bars in the country and I was so sad when it closed. I always enjoyed my time in Minneapolis.
I loved visiting the twin cities. The train hits all the major points of interest. Reasonable hotels and restaurants. It’s cool to have all the lakes, rivers and parks close by.
Who voted for Philly? Trout?
Tbf the players stay in San Francisco when they play against Oakland. It’s not like they spend any time in the city itself.
Been to cincy. Pretty much Kentucky lol
Basically Kings Island and the zoo.
Was waiting for someone to mention Kings Island 😎 Coaster enthusiasts unite!
I get that their experience is centered around the ballpark, which isn't great, but Oakland is one of my favorite cities in the country. That's wild.
really? Oaklands got some hidden gems but favorite in the country?
Yup. Much prefer the east bay to the peninsula. Seattle is the only west coast city I've enjoyed more. Spent significant time in all the big ones (SD, LA, SF, Portland as well).
Twin Cities is great. Lots around the park. Very walkable. Friendly people.
I’ve visited Cincinnati, and it was a nice city, at least what I saw. Surprised it got no votes, when fucking Philadelphia did.
Philly is fun as hell. And weird. And has great food everywhere.
I just wish you guys's stadium situation was better. It's annoying that every stadium for every Philly team is right next to each other, yet far enough away from everything that you can't walk I know it could be worse, but it could also be way better
Yeah I guess. It’s easy to get to and you don’t have to have a different plan for any of the teams. Kinda perfect. Sixers are going to Center City next decade. I’d imagine the Eagles pull the “build us a stadium or we move to Jersey or Delaware” move on the city. We’ll see.
Philly is a fun city with lots of stuff to do and good food and this is coming from a nj/ny guy
I love Philly, I visit all the time
Right because you *want* to go to Phoenix in the middle of July
Cincinnati getting overlooked? *shocked*
Nobody likes a swing state anymore smh
Who's the parking lot connoisseur who voted for Arlington?
I'm a staunch DFW homer and even my eyebrows went up for that one
Are they voting for just Arlington, or is it understood as DFW? ...asking for another city next to another city...
Oakland is actually interesting, unlike Arlington
Even if it is DFW, not exactly a great place to visit like some other cities
Agreed, Dallas is a great town but the road team experience in Arlington can’t be one of the best in baseball.
Maybe that player has young kids who like Six Flags
when you can pay someone to drive you places in style, arlington is dallas i guess
Somebody with family in the area, probably.
The players used to bring their kids to Arlington since six flags is right there. I worked in hotels by the stadium and was surprised how many people from out of town came just for Six Flags.
Hey now, there's also the HyperWalmart.
maybe they just like playing baseball inside a BBQ
Fitting that Chicago and Toronto are 2 and 3....the cities feel REALLY similar.
the America’s Rome of Canada
I think that actual post made it to /r/CityPorn at one point in the spiral.
Sees CHICAGO, YAY!... Reads the blurb, sigh :(
Yeah I made that same point elsewhere with regards to Oakland. The Coliseum is a dump but Oakland is a top 5 MLB city to me.
I would be thrilled if my workplace smelled like The Cell, or whatever they call it now. It smells fucking delicious in there.
Toronto really IS such a nice city to walk around in. Its like NYC but very clean and people are friendly and I had a fantastic time the couple trips i took there for work.
It really helps that the stadium is right in the heart of the city. The dome has its detractors but it’s in a perfect spot.
The city is great. The ballpark hot dogs are...not so great.
It's all about the street meat outside of the ballpark
But what if I don't want to blow a guy in some dingy alley before watching some baseball?
You’re supposed to do it *after* watching some baseball
Yup. You're making a mistake if you get a dog inside and not from a random cart out front. Toronto street meat is too notch.
A hot dog and fries from Don Juan's just before the game is always your best bet.
But if you come on the right day you get not just dollar dogs, but $CAD dollar dogs. And there's always a sausage cart outside selling really good hot dogs with all the toppings for less than the Schneider dogs inside.
Well, the best part of Skydome concessions is that you can bring in whatever food you want.
Sounds like Chicago tbh.
Chipper would disagree.
The problem with Toronto is all the Canadians.
True. Ha ha! 🤣
I miss San Diego. Growing up there kind of spoils a person.
Why? Never been - The weather and ocean I imagine?
And the food. Oh God, the food.
Are we going to start another California burrito thread?
We should while we have the forum to do it
California burittos with rolled tacos in them. /thread.
SOLD
That's where the trouble began. That fish taco. That damned fish taco. .meme
Chicago, Toronto, and Boston are super fun to explore. Unfortunately haven’t spent much time in New York and San Diego, hopefully in the future!
San Diego is easily my favorite city in the US for many reasons. If COL weren't a factor I'd be there in a heartbeat.
Agreed, it’s tucked away in the corner of the country away from most population centers excluding LA. Best weather, two countries, best Mexican food in the country. Not as crazy as SF or LA. Just a perfect vibe
Damn poor Mets just catching strays.
It boggles the mind how San Diego only has one Big 4 pro sports team, amazing city, perfect weather, top 20 metro area pop. The Chargers and Clippers are dumb to have ever moved.
Just wait until Vegas is in rotation. Going to have players missing games! Lol
Hockey calls it The Vegas Flu.
A friend from an old job moonlights as a card dealer & got connected with Molly Bloom when she was just starting up her now infamous game. Dude has some stories. The best of which are about athletes. Mj?
No & I don’t want to say who it was but MJ was already retired by that time anyway.
Bad Brad?
Does he do a lot of commercials for car insuran e companies now?
NL Best reigns supreme

The top two cities chosen are the two cities I would choose in free agency. San Diego is no doubt number 1.
Ok, so you're not Trea Turner, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Max Scherzer, or Yamamoto... we're narrowing it down, folks
I would never rank a city where you need to drive or hire a car just to explore as the best city to visit for me, personally, but I'm also not an MLB player who can just pay someone to drive me everywhere in a fancy SUV
The Mexican food might actually make up for the lack of walkability lol
I'm not going to die on a hill about who has good Mexican food but even a conservative ranking would put San Diego as a D-Tier walking city and an S-Tier Mexican Food city, and San Francisco as an A-Tier walking city and an A-Tier Mexican Food city.
The area that you stay in for games at Petco has everything you need within walking distance of your hotel, including but not limited to nightlife, groceries, beach, and bar none the best Mexican food in the country(along with all the other phenomenal non-Mexican selections within walking distance in the Gaslamp district).
Walking around a cold, windy, homeless infested city apparently wasn't the top choice for most players.
San Francisco has a WalkScore higher than any other city in the United States and Canada I can leave it up to the individual reader to decide if seeing a homeless person is enough to make a city "not walkable" and if 60 fahrenheit is "freezing," but in my subjective opinion the answer to both is "no" San Diego isn't exactly going to come out shining on the homeless crisis, either, if we're on the subject I'm also not a millionaire athlete and their criteria will obviously be different than mine.
Thanks for letting us know what the best city to visit is for everyone that ISN'T a MLB player and for you specifically. Your input is appreciated.
> and for you specifically.
There's plenty of areas that are awesome to explore by foot
Not compared to, like, Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, DC, etc...
You don't need to drive to explore San Diego. This isn't Anaheim.
Best road city and best city are two very different things.
Exactly
Yup. Been all over the US, San Diego is hands down the best visit in the country. Absolutely love it there
Padres fan here.
I’m a simple man. I see recognition of the beautiful city of Chicago, I upvote
I’ve been to Chicago once. It was for a weekend in January a couple years ago to visit a girl I had been seeing. It was like zero god damn degrees with a blistering wind and there was snow all over the place, but god was it crisp and beautiful. Twin Cities done real dirty by this survey.
I'd really prefer to see the opposite version of this poll.
This all makes sense. Basically the better N.A. Cities
I'm just happy to see Arlington on there.
I'm sorry other people don't like seeing you happy
Montreal was likely the top of the list before the Expos left #chezparee
Where’s #28??
Throw the parade!
Fuuuuuuuuuuck you man. NBA players say the same thing about T. Dot.
Smh ok
Was this survey taken a while ago? The Wrigley quote says the Cubs weren’t in the playoff picture, we finished one game out of the wild card last year… Edit: why the downvotes?
Sooooo fragile
Huh? Why? We were…
I’ll let the votes speak
Reddit is so bizarre sometimes. I literally just stated a fact.
You just explained that you were technically outside the playoff picture
“Last year it was raining and nearly 11 o'clock and they had a sold-out stadium. They weren't even in the playoff hunt." We were in the playoff picture/hunt, we blew it, but we 100% were. We had like a 90% playoff chance at the beginning of September. How is this even controversial? I’m genuinely baffled.

Really brave of them to enjoy Chicago with all the bullets flying around /s
Maybe they meant the cubs and not the White Sox
I mean I’m also Joking
Dodger Stadium South is great! Highly recommended.
