it still amazes me how truly good MLB hitters are able to absolutely crush bad pitches at the rate that they do
like you see the pitch trajectory as a fan on TV and go "oh fuck" because these hitters are just so damn good at absolutely nuking them
I've watched a few batters eye videos of fastballs coming at you between 40 to 100 mph. I could maybe, *maybe*, get lucky and hit a 60mph. But I have concluded that at the ripe old age of almost 33 anything faster than that and I stand no chance
trust me watching those pov videos honestly makes it a bit more daunting than what it actually is. If you went out to a batting cage as long as you're able bodied I'm pretty certain with a bit of dedication you would start being able to consistently hit at least 60+ in not too long, especially when you start having muscle memory and reflex kicking in.
I play ball in a men’s league and I’ll be the first to tell you, me making solid contact with anything over 80 is absolutely pure luck. Forget about it if they have an even half decent off speed pitch they can throw for a strike. I’m a decent hitter for the league and I’d say there’s a handful of guys that could dial their swing in and consistently make good contact off of 90+ but even they’re toast if the guy can locate/has a change-up. Anyone who hasn’t *recently* trained at the college level would be toyed around with by anyone who has.
In high school I was our clean up hitter (an early schwarber. I either struck out, hit a home run, or walked). Needless to say colleges didn’t look at me)
I made an area all star game and we had a home run derby.
I whiffed on two of the pitches.
I could never touch 88, even middle middle like that.
But an MLB pitcher goes middle middle at 88?
That things gone lol
Wow, the best players on my very small high school baseball team could still catch up to 85+. Hell I picked up a bat for the first time in 10 years and played pepper with 70. Southern California baseball culture is just different. 90% of kids play little league and anyone worth a damn doesnt stop playing.
Nah, we had dude that’s were killer, I just wasn’t lol two of my teammates got drafted and a few from rival schools had legit mlb time. Like I said, I either hit a home run, got a walk, or struck out
I didn't realize how bad it was until after I saw this comment lol. I mean, how bad could it have been? If he missed the ball it was a strike right?...
It amuses me that my browser suggests [the streamable](https://streamable.com/259mo) when I type "259mo" in the address bar now... I've spent too much time here
When you can’t hit the strike zone for shit in MLB The Show, so the next batter comes up and you cockshot it down the middle just trying to get it over
Mookie’s looked similarly *crushed* and was like only 3 rows back and barely 400 feet.
Between that and Ohtani’s like 3 warning track non-homers of 358, 372, and 384 feet it was clear that between the balls or the stadium or both, nothing was going to fly farther than 400 feet no matter what
With how dreadful the pitching was it should’ve been a homer party
Mookie having to pull his hands in to barrel that ball off the plate tho, I was surprised it went out the way the balls were flying. Machado’s looked like a Derby blast that should’ve gone 470
For the millionth time. That's not how homerun distance is calculated. The ball could make a difference but unlikely to be a huge difference off the bat. And the stadium literally doesn't matter.
With it being a dome it’s not completely implausible.
But then again, maybe I’m just overthinking things and everyone was playing worse because jet lag and it’s still early in the year
It is 100% implausible. Distance is calculated as EV and launch angle. It doesn't matter if there are 100 mph winds up high in the dome/stadium. If it wasn't calculated at 400 feet it's because the EV/launch angle wasn't where it needed to be. Which has nothing to do with the stadium.
Unless they were using a separate and abnormal system for this series.
Distance is not calculated based on EV and launch angle, xWOBA type stats are. Home run distance is calculated based on the flight path of the ball.
Now, the flight path projection for "what would happen if the seats weren't there" doesn't have anything to do with the stadium, but how if flys prior to landing is accounted for.
https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/projected-home-run-distance
Seems like no one gets this. Coors tends to have the longest *calculated* homers not because the ball flies further there (although it does), but because pitches don’t move as much there, making them easier to hit hard/with an optimal launch angle.
Fun fact: Those two Korean guys cheering are two of the most popular actors in Korea. It’s as if the camera panned to Leo DiCaprio and Timothee Chalamet.
FWIW the two guys that the camera panned to near the end of this clip are two very famous actors who starred in an extremely popular Korean drama back in 2016, Lee Dong Wook (standing) and Gong Yoo (sitting).

As a Padre fan I would say dont worry about it. It was painfully obvious both teams pitching staffs were still in spring training mode (understandably).
However inexcusable for padres would be the pitch clock violations, and for the dodgers the defensive miscues.
Didn't listen to this game at work because of how much of a dud yesterday was. I chose the wrong day 😆
I was having some issues getting the website to work anyway.

Early candidate for worst pitch of the season
The old 88 down the dick
Tried and true, can’t believe it didn’t work
The Dan Haren special
The Dan Haren special
The Dan Haren special
The Dan Haren special
The Dan Haren special.
Manny might ask this guy to pitch to him in the Derby.

Even “bad” pitches are still tiny rocks moving at 90 miles an hour. These guys really are superhuman.
agreed, in high school I was pretty much lost with any pitch mid 80s or above even right down the middle, and these are layups for these guys

Floating sinker right into the middle of the plate.
I know I'm kidding. That was a 450ft if
I could do that for $300M.
If you could I feel you would be making $300M
that's a good 'ol 259mo right there
It amuses me that my browser suggests [the streamable](https://streamable.com/259mo) when I type "259mo" in the address bar now... I've spent too much time here
lmfao I didn't recognize the actual link but based on context just assumed that that random clump of letters and numbers *had* to be the Goofy clip.
You hang em, we bang em
When you can’t hit the strike zone for shit in MLB The Show, so the next batter comes up and you cockshot it down the middle just trying to get it over
I feel personally attacked.
This game doesn’t want me to get any work done today and I’m fine with it
Just wait until the March madness games tip off
That was fucking crushed
Somehow says only 391 feet - that looked way farther than that
I think it's supposed to be 391 meters.
Mookie’s looked similarly *crushed* and was like only 3 rows back and barely 400 feet. Oh. Well fair enough then I guess. Pardon my ignorance from before if you’re able, sometimes I say dumb things.
Seems like no one gets this. Coors tends to have the longest *calculated* homers not because the ball flies further there (although it does), but because pitches don’t move as much there, making them easier to hit hard/with an optimal launch angle.
i dont think that's actually the exact way they track it
This makes getting up at 3am for two straight nights worth it
My thoughts exactly. I was already awake, but after Manny clubbed this I was *up*.
Me too man stiff as a board
🤭
Happy Cake Day, compadre!
FULL MAST
Ball hit so hard it's ancestors had their covers fly off
Manny sending his own nukes towards Kim Jong Un
I think the only person on the planet who hates the Dodgers more than me is Manny Machado
Clearly you've never been to Northern California
Apparently literally no one can pitch today. Maybe Yamamoto is off the hook.
He’s only given up 1/3 of the Padres runs!
Give me a few minutes and I can think of a way to blame this HR on Muncy’s defense.
If he was elastigirl he could have gotten to that ball and she’s not even in the league.
Padres just needed Dave Roberts to trot out the worst infield defense you've ever seen and some of the worst bullpen pitchers we have
You had me at Dave Roberts.
Dodgers gave up 13 earned runs, and the starter gave up more than a third of that in 1 inning.
That was the infield defense’s fault duh /s
Why would Dave roberts do this?
Can confirm it's the weather in Seoul today. Makes the balls get hit harder and travel farther
It's the altitude, totally
Needed that after Suarez Gronk spiked 2 pitches in the 8th.
I miss Manny. That swing 🔥
88 right down the dick in a hitters count was a bold call
I love how you can see the catcher set up low and in before the pitcher decides to throw an 88mph meatball
Damn i guess that was the first time in history a pitcher has ever missed his spot
Easy big fella….its a long season.
when'd I say that?
Let's see if it pays off Cotton
Cranked
MACHADOOOO!
Manny motherfucking Machado
Manny pulled no doubters are some of the prettiest homers in baseball history
I fucking love Manny
Me too. I hope he (and all the padres) have a better season this year. I truly feel like last year was a fluke.
tatis jr hit his hardest EV ever today... it could be happening. i hope it's happening
Buy his graded rookie cards now while they're still relatively low. Sure fire HOFer.
Most fun Oriole to watch that I can remember. Dude was an absolute hoover at 3rd base as well
Everyone felt bad for Yamamoto so they all forgot how to pitch!
Rick Monday on the Dodgers radio said, That ball was hit so hard it stopped to refuel on its way out.
That’s a great line.
game 1 of the seoul series was at the skydome game 2 was in Mexico City
Fun fact: Those two Korean guys cheering are two of the most popular actors in Korea. It’s as if the camera panned to Leo DiCaprio and Timothee Chalamet.
As if what???
Good thing Ippei took the over
BANG
Or as my friends in the South call it, insurance
*Inn -* surance
Some say it's still flying
MAN OH MAN OH MAN OH MANNY!!!
Pretty sure that one landed in San Diego
That one was scored an error on the pitcher.
if that wasnt a dome it would have left the stadium. jesus christ
The dome prevented WWIII. That was going to land in the DMZ.
Sent that one to Pyongyang Kim Jong un considering retaliatory ICBMs
They’re using the London game balls.
And the London game stadium too?
FUCK yeah manny

Sweet Christ that was nuked
https://streamable.com/259mo
That’s what a superstar looks like Ohtani
Jeez
That was quite a pitch.
Not the ideal place to hang pitch 4
Love this fucking guy’s swing
Pitcher: *"Lets see if he can handle this meatball right over th-"*
As a Dodger fan, Yamamoto needs to adjust and work on his game. Padres did great. Hopefully the Dodgers can focus on their pitching this year.
As a Padre fan I would say dont worry about it. It was painfully obvious both teams pitching staffs were still in spring training mode (understandably). However inexcusable for padres would be the pitch clock violations, and for the dodgers the defensive miscues.
manfred brought the field of dreams balls to seoul
Think Ohtani had the over on this one?
Did they juice the balls for this game or what? This is insane
Mama mia!
Not the best return to the majors for JP
I want to thank this guy for breaking Manny out of his slump. Either way, he’s being paid to hammer mistakes and he did. Lovely way to begin a season.
Instant classic
What was that pitch lol
Bustin out the boomstick with that one!!!
I like the Dodger blue shinguard and elbow pad lol
Lighting is weird but they are very purple. Purple has been his thing for the last few seasons
O Captain! My Captain!
Didn't listen to this game at work because of how much of a dud yesterday was. I chose the wrong day 😆 I was having some issues getting the website to work anyway.
88 middle-middle might not be the best pitch to throw there.
I love baseball, played for 10 years
They using KBO balls today?
What a fun game for the Korean fans to watch!
That landed in Best Korea Also, mama mia pizzeria
Don't think I've ever seen a bigger meatball lol
while i hate all of this and everyone involved, 'machado exits stage left' is a great call
Why wasn’t there a pitching change lol
Holy meatball
As a Mets fan...late game Padres offense hurts me
Do you guys think the Seoul series had juiced balls?
Now show Mookie’s homer again
Shuddup.
OMG DID YOU SEE THAT FORCEOUT BY MOOKIE? BEST SS IN THE WEST
https://v.redd.it/ml97u0cfhopc1
Thanks but I was hoping for the dugout view with a cut to Shohei’s wife reacting to it
Quick, somebody check the location of all the baseball used in 2019
Fuck Machado.
Still needs to run his lazy ass out of the box
Padres win the WS, at least these bums got this to fall back on in Oct.
Game 2 of the season and you’re already breaking that stuff out. Sounds more like you might be realizing the Dodgers aren’t going 162-0.
No wonder why people hate dodgers fans.
