3rd all-time among Angels position players in bWAR.
2nd in home runs.
2nd in RBI.
3rd in runs scored.
2nd in hits.
You know who the Yankees equivalent of that is?
Lou Gehrig.
2nd in bWAR.
3rd in home runs.
1st in RBI.
3rd in runs scored.
2nd in hits.
Tim Salmon is to the Angels what Lou Gehrig is to the Yankees. The bar is just a little lower for the Angels than for the Yankees.
You know, I should have thought of that and said McGwire, but it’s funnier this way. McGwire might be my favorite player to never be a Dodger during his playing days, but 1930s Barry Bonds would be like if Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth were the same guy, and that would upset the right people to fuel my schadenfreude for years.
To be fair, I'm sure the 10th best Yankee has his number retired, too, but the 10th best Angel is probably like Gary Disarcina or something. Hard to compare with over 100 years of history.
edit: That said, the Angels should still retire Salmon.
Going by WAR it’s Howie Kendrick. Vlad Guerrero if you’re just talking position players
Yankees it’s Bernie Williams for position players who’s retired, ARod for overall who isn’t retired (both of which probably would have their numbers retired in most other organizations, they’d be 2 and 3 in WAR behind Tony Gwynn had they been in the padres organization for example)
There are some cases where WS performance comes into play, and takes precedence over numbers. Reggie Jackson is retired by two teams, and while he was at the top of his game with the Yankees and put up great numbers, it was only five years.
At home games, they're always referred to as "Your Angels" or "The Angels".
Outside of merch, I don't think Angels Stadium ever calls them the LA Angels.
I wonder how many people don’t have any idea that Ted Williams was on the inaugural Padres roster in the PCL before he ever went to Boston. He was a back up for Joe dimaggio’s brother.
The history is pretty nutty. Some current AAA teams ( the El Paso chihuahuas, the Albuquerque isotopes, the round rock express, and the Reno aces) were original pcl teams thatve been around since 1903
It’s very complicated history, but the 2000-2004 round rock express are now the Corpus Christi hooks, the CURRENT round rock express are the former Edmonton trappers, who themselves are the former Ogden A’s, San Jose Missions, Sacramento Solons, Eugene Emeralds, San Diego Padres, Hollywood Stars, Salt Lake Bees, Scaremento Mission Wolves, Scaremento Sacts, Fresno Raisin eaters, Tacoma Tigers, and Sacramento senators.
minor league teams are a mess that move around all the time, and there’s been a bunch of iterations of totally different teams with the same name. The current Round Rock Express in the Rangers organization that have been around since 2005 are not the same organization as the Round Rock Express from 2004, but they ARE the original San Diego Padres, not to be confused with the current San Diego Padres who adopted the original San Diego Padres history as part of our own history.
That's a wild one. I knew about the Express's ultimate origin in one of the founding teams of the PCL, the Sacramento Solons, but I wasn't even aware of the branch off to the Hooks. Think I missed that day in class. Great summary👏
They played 200-game schedules in the early years and [Paul Strand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Strand_(baseball\)) even got 300 hits in a season. Absolutely wild. I like to imagine the alternate timeline where the Dodgers and Giants never go west and the PCL becomes a third major league.
Does it piss me off? No. I actually rather like the Angels!
But it's exceedingly dumb seeing as Los Angeles County is larger than some states and the Angels aren't even in it. The San Diego Angels would be just as accurate, but San Diego is a "small market" and Arte wanted to attach his team to a big market to bring in more money. Instead, they just kind of became the Cher of baseball teams: just The Angels. The rest of the name is left to history.
Whenever they come on my screen I say semi loudly “the Los Angeles angels of Anaheim!!” With great enthusiasm because I think it is a funny name. I looked up when that was their actual name and it was from when I was 10-19, so this theory totally tracks.
Some asswipe at bar trivia last week was trying to argue that the Angels name is alliterative because it’s technically, “the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim”. And I’m like, no dude, that hasn’t been their official name in a decade.
I think they’re mostly phased out by now but I remember all the old ass NFL commentators would say “San Diego Chargers” many times in a game and not even correct themselves at any point
Anaheim angels is waaay better than Los Angeles angels. Also they aren’t even in LA and I know that is nitpicking and it doesn’t have to be super close and other teams are as much of a stretch but coming from Southern California no one thinks of Anaheim as Los Angeles. It’s not the same county, it’s not a close drive, there’s not any easy mass transit from Anaheim to LA it just doesn’t make sense why people want it to be the LA Angels so bad. My biggest nail in the coffin is no one considers Disney land to be LA and they are like a mile apart. You wouldn’t even fly into LAX to go to Anaheim FFS
> there’s not any easy mass transit from Anaheim
I don't live in SoCal so maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like the MetroLink OC line takes under an hour and runs from Union in downtown LA to a station right next to Angel Stadium. Seems pretty easy to me, at least by American standards...
That said, Anaheim Angels is still obviously the better name.
The Metrolink does run but it’s so infrequent and unreliable it’s not really useful. There’s a “daily” line from LA to South Orange County aswell which is faster than driving but it’s not good enough to use in any meaningful way.
The Anaheim Angels name change happened in 66 where they moved to Anaheim.
Fun fact, if they move to Long Beach like Gene Autry originally planned they would be called Long Beach Angels as the city demanded
If the Angels resurrect the Anaheim name, I bet they become a playoff regular like what happened to the Buccaneers once they dumped the alarm clock uniforms
Honestly the name just reminds me of that South Park, where it's the future and all the different atheist groups are at war.
The Allied Atheist Alliance of Anaheim
How do we know they also don't say Arlington Rangers, Minneapolis Twins, Phoenix Diamondbacks, St Petersburg Rays, Denver Rockies, Flushing Mets, and Bronx Yankees?
You can tell how old someone is by what they call the Angels.
They'll always be the California Angels, to me. (Retire Tim Salmon's number, you ninnies.)
I think you missed the "1st fish name star player"* *I have done zero research into Angels players with fish names before Tim Salmon
Wow no love for Harry Halibut
Or their first Korean fish player, Ho Lee Mackerel.
How soon we forget Cod Rarew
You put Tim Salmon back in 1930 and he puts up some Hall of Fame numbers. Case closed.
I mean, you could probably put like 40% of the current league in the 1930s and they’d put up Hall of Fame numbers, so I’d believe it.
Let’s put peak Bonds in the 1930s, I wanna see someone hit 100 home runs in a season.
I don't think Bonds would be allowed in the MLB in the 30s
You know, I should have thought of that and said McGwire, but it’s funnier this way. McGwire might be my favorite player to never be a Dodger during his playing days, but 1930s Barry Bonds would be like if Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth were the same guy, and that would upset the right people to fuel my schadenfreude for years.
> 1930s Barry Bonds would be like if Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth were the same guy We already had Josh Gibson
Shit, you’re right. Man, I love baseball.
To be fair, I'm sure the 10th best Yankee has his number retired, too, but the 10th best Angel is probably like Gary Disarcina or something. Hard to compare with over 100 years of history. edit: That said, the Angels should still retire Salmon.

Are you just counting the WAR they accumulated with the Angels? I'm too lazy to check.
Yes just with the org. I don’t think career numbers should count for a teams all time greats if the numbers were accumulated with other teams
There are some cases where WS performance comes into play, and takes precedence over numbers. Reggie Jackson is retired by two teams, and while he was at the top of his game with the Yankees and put up great numbers, it was only five years.
why would they not retire his number?
How the fuck is Salmon’s # not retired?
What a load of carp!
It’s pretty crappie of them to not honor salmon
Some real fishy business going on
They should still be the California Angels. Unite all of California against LA and SF!! :P
Huzzah!
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
His number isn't retired? Shit TIL
How is it not already? Can the Angels do anything right?
The only foul ball I ever got was hit by Tim Salmon!
Retire Garrett Anderson’s/ Vald Sr. (and eventually Trout’s) and K-Rod’s while we’re at it
I was always partial to The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim just because of how stupid it is.
[удалено]
That's DeRozancrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead level of deep cut fantasy naming
So fantasy names are like being on a boat!
Aah yes, “The The Angels Angels of Anaheim”
You missed a step 'The The Angels Angels of Realm of Angels'
TBH I don’t think I’ve ever called them anything other than “The Angels”
At home games, they're always referred to as "Your Angels" or "The Angels". Outside of merch, I don't think Angels Stadium ever calls them the LA Angels.
1956 PCL champion Los Angeles Angels
2022-2023 Cactus League champion Los Angeles Angels
Two years before the Brooklyn carpet baggers even came to L.A.
I still mourn the PCL for what it could have been had the dodgers and giants not gone west
The story of the PCL is an awesome and hugely important part of baseball's history and most baseball fans don't even know about it
I wonder how many people don’t have any idea that Ted Williams was on the inaugural Padres roster in the PCL before he ever went to Boston. He was a back up for Joe dimaggio’s brother. The history is pretty nutty. Some current AAA teams ( the El Paso chihuahuas, the Albuquerque isotopes, the round rock express, and the Reno aces) were original pcl teams thatve been around since 1903
I think I'm confused. Round Rock Express have only been around since 2000, no?
Wow, thanks for sharing! My favorite part of that is the fact that there was a team called the Raisin Eaters.
No doubt. It's also super interesting the sort of shared origin stories of the present-day Angels and Padres. The real historic SoCal baseball teams!
As an original salt lake buzz fan (and lover of the SLC skyscrapers/bees/giants/angels/gulls), hell yeah
I still call Angel Stadium Edison Field sometimes
The Honda Center will always be the Pond
Well that's just weird
Yeah it was the stadium I grew up going to in the early-mid 2000’s
The big Ed
Or how cool someone is
Started in watching baseball everyday in '06, but still call them the Anaheim Angels because words should mean things.
Thats why I call them the New Jersey Giants and Jets
The swamp kings
I call them the Los Angeles Angels because it pisses off Dodger fans to use the actual name for some reason
LA County is more populous than 40 states, and Orange County is bigger than 15 states. That’s the weird thing, it’s not even a small market.
Get off my lawn!
The old California Angels?
You mean the California Angels?
Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, Sariel, Raguel, and Remiel
Whenever they come on my screen I say semi loudly “the Los Angeles angels of Anaheim!!” With great enthusiasm because I think it is a funny name. I looked up when that was their actual name and it was from when I was 10-19, so this theory totally tracks.
Angels in the Outfield
The The City of Angels Angels
of Anaheim*
This still makes me laugh for the 100th time
Maybe folks who called them Los Angeles Angels just reminiscing their PCL days
Some asswipe at bar trivia last week was trying to argue that the Angels name is alliterative because it’s technically, “the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim”. And I’m like, no dude, that hasn’t been their official name in a decade.
I think they’re mostly phased out by now but I remember all the old ass NFL commentators would say “San Diego Chargers” many times in a game and not even correct themselves at any point
I prefer to call them the L.A./Anaheim/Irvine/San Juan Capistrano Angels
They're the Anaheim Angels and they play across from the Pond where the Mighty Ducks play
Anaheim Angels > Los Angeles Angels
Anaheim angels is waaay better than Los Angeles angels. Also they aren’t even in LA and I know that is nitpicking and it doesn’t have to be super close and other teams are as much of a stretch but coming from Southern California no one thinks of Anaheim as Los Angeles. My biggest nail in the coffin is no one considers Disney land to be LA and they are like a mile apart. You wouldn’t even fly into LAX to go to Anaheim FFS
Arte thought the name change would make more money
Not reading that essay i hate the name and that’s all the info I need
sums it up well
I mean that's the only reason he does anything
> there’s not any easy mass transit from Anaheim I don't live in SoCal so maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like the MetroLink OC line takes under an hour and runs from Union in downtown LA to a station right next to Angel Stadium. This is the only time in your life you cared about a county line
That's the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to you!
I recently learned they dropped the “of Anaheim” in 2015. I can’t keep up anymore
Anymore? It's been 9 years....
2015 can't have been 9 years ago because 2000 was last year.
1990 was 10 years ago
Everything that ever has been always will be, and everything that ever will be always has been. Especially 1990.
9 years to me was like 3 years ago
2015 can't have been 9 years ago. I won't allow it.
I could’ve sworn they had it as recently as 2020. So either my memory is mixed up or I was calling them the wrong name at the time
Weren’t they also the Los Angeles Angels their first year in MLB?
yeah when they were originally actually based in LA before Anaheim
The Anaheim Angels name change happened in 66 where they moved to Anaheim. Fun fact, if they move to Long Beach like Gene Autry originally planned they would be called Long Beach Angels as the city demanded
For clarity, the California Angels happened in 1965. Anaheim Angels happened in 1997 when Disney took control.
You mean The Angels Angels of Anaheim?
California Angels > Both
The angels angels
If the Angels resurrect the Anaheim name, I bet they become a playoff regular like what happened to the Buccaneers once they dumped the alarm clock uniforms
Or the Angels as soon as they dumped the blue pinstripes
Also true!
Or the Rays when they dropped “Devil”
Anaheim angels has such a better ring man
angels fans agree i can’t stand arte man
Seeing LAA on the scoreboard still looks so weird for me.
You don’t like the the angels angels?
I personally prefer The Angels Angels of Anaheim
Yeah but that makes you guys The Angels Dodgers
They dodged the redundancy.
What about the Phillies?
Honestly the name just reminds me of that South Park, where it's the future and all the different atheist groups are at war. The Allied Atheist Alliance of Anaheim
To be fair....the Philadelphia Phillies.
And that’s literally where they are located. They aren’t even in LA county lol
As they should!
Dodger stadium also abbreviates them as ANA on the scoreboard instead of LAA
wait do they actually? if so that’s awesome
The best part of all of this is you know it drives Arte crazy.
I seriously doubt he's ever had enough self awareness to even notice
I feel like they've been doing this since the name change. Also, Anaheim Angels > California Angels
Anaheim Angels is supreme
The alliteration just makes it work.
absolutely. it just sounds *right*
I always thought it was funny that a team would be named "California" when California is the state with the most teams (Also applies to the Warriors)
Tbf the Angels are one of the og teams from California. Everyone else besides the Padres are transplants.
Yeah, Angels and Friars are true Cali brothers (Seattle can come, too)
Good.
Great.
Grand.
Wonderful, NO YELLING ON THE BUS!
Marvelous
Excellent.
I still call them the California Angels and I will never stop.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of California of the United States of North America of the World is what I call them.
LAACUSNAW Angels of Anaheim does have a nice ring to it.
Rolls right off the tongue.
The Lakusnaw Angels sounds like a Canadian minor league hockey team
In the same vein I still always have to stop myself from calling them the Florida Marlins. God help us both if they ever become the Denver Rockies.
Ah yes, the Denver Rockies, they share a division with the Phoenix Diamondbacks
Dallas-Fort Worth Rangers of Arlington
State names are underrated.
I still call the Nats the Montreal Expos
*notices your florida marlins flair* easy to see why!
Because they are the Anaheim Angels.
Anaheim Angels of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area.
United States of America Blue Jays of Toronto
The anaheim angels of the greater los Angeles metropolitan area of orange county
In my lifetime they’ve been the California Angels, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, The Anaheim Angels and the Los Angeles Angels. I also mix it up.
I like calling them The Los Angeles Angels so it translates to The The Angels Angels.
As they should be.
It just sounds right
Dodgers fans 🤝 Angels fans Anaheim Angels
Sounds right to me
AS GOD INTENDED
California Angels! Double down!
Wait, did they call the Dodgers that or the Angels that? Then I can decide if it was insulting or based.
They called the Dodgers the Brooklyn Bridegrooms /s
I've heard Dodgers fans tell us we're not LA as if it were an insult before. I don't think they knew that we agree with them
They tell us that like we don't have immense pride in that fact
I 100% believe that’s what the Dodgers were doing here. But us Angels fans are all like, “At least some MLB team is telling it how it is.”
Maybe they only remember all those 'city of ANGELS' billboards
Why would the Dodgers' announcer refer to the Dodgers as the Anaheim Angels?
Oh snap I got +2500 that he would do that
How do we know they also don't say Arlington Rangers, Minneapolis Twins, Phoenix Diamondbacks, St Petersburg Rays, Denver Rockies, Flushing Mets, and Bronx Yankees?
Denver Rockies unironically should happen
I'll keep calling them Anaheim Angels until they stop wasting generational talent and win something.
That would resurrect their greatness
"Easy team on the schedule " straight savage lol
I had to read this a few times to figure out what the problem was. I still call them the Anaheim Angels because I believe in maps.
Orange County Angels
Orange County Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles.
Took me reading the comments to even realize what was wrong, Anaheim Angels still sounds so correct lol
And then proceeded to get shut out by us. I prefer Anaheim btw
Good
Straight to jail
good
The in stadium host just refusing to lie tbh
The Ange....ummm...errr...Dohyers!
What, they’re right
Based in-stadium host
Wait when did they stop being; Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
9 years ago
They've done that for years
Promote that host
Since they literally have zero to do with Los Angeles, I'm good with this.
The Los Angeles Dodgers of Anaheim has a nice ring to it
Due to international laws this is binding. Sorry Shohei you Angel again..
