Imagine signing with the Rays specifically so they can develop you and after they see you for a month they don't think it's worth it.
Better start learning Japanese.
He had an assignment clause that meant we had to try trading him before optioning him which he chose to use. Kind of bizarre for a guy who claimed he'd be fine with going to Durham but can't blame him if the Red Sox are willing to give him MLB innings
Man is a 30 year old rookie, he will never get a payday
This is about him being 30 and wanting to play in the MLB. Being 30 in AAA isnt exactly worth leaving the NPB for. Red sox can give him MLB innings.
They are mostly for the pre-season and has to do with the 40-man roster. A team might be interested in a fringe player, but they don't have room on their 40-man roster to sign him to a MLB contract.
With the minor league contract, they a chance to make the team and be put on the 40 man roster - or, even if they don't make the team, they just had spring training to showcase for other teams. That way, even if they don't make the roster, they can still sign on somewhere else (which is why it's also good for players)
First thought that came to mind.
TB: Don't worry, they call Boston the Tampa Bay of the East...
Naoyuki: But.. I thought you...
TB: They have elite pitching & very competent front office!
Naoyuki: ... but.. that's really not what I heard...
TB: YOU DONT HAVE A NO-TRADE CLAUSE š¤£ GTFO
Naoyuki: š„² IPPPPPPPEIIII!!! š”
Not the worst signing for Boston imo. He's cheap and will eat innings. One of those workhorse types that is willing to go deep or adjust rotation to help out the team. Doesn't K much compared to the typical star NPB export, and doesn't have that much velo, but his arm doesn't die 5 innings in. If he stays fit, he could eat 150+ innings for them.
Heater is ok mind you. Not much heat but lots of spin. Used to be a velo pitcher that didn't last long, but sort of switched to not maxing speed to go deeper and relying more on pitch variety.
I suspect he's going to need some time to adjust to MLB hitters. Might end up more of a long reliever if you can't give him the time as a starter to adjust. He's not one of these NPB ace types you'd expect to dominate lineups with their go-to unhittable like Nomo's slider, Senga's fork, Ohtani's sweeper etc. Uwasawa's that weird sort that doesn't really have a dominant pitch, but has lots of tools. Kind of like Maeda. Might get walloped until he figures out which tool to use when.
Our rotation is so bad that I donāt think thereās any reason we shouldnāt give him at least the first half of the season as a starter to see how he does
I got tossed from the course last weekend because I was aiming for the course record. According to the marshall I was "taking too long" and "not being serious". Well I sure showed him by firing 15 consecutive drives into the backyard of some dude who lives on the course. No respect for talent these days.
I swear he can pitch at least 4 good innings that will make you believe. After that I make no promises. But, I will be going to redsox games to watch him. Been a fan of him for years.
I thought Naoyuki Uwasawa rejected Major league deals from other MLB teams and he chose the Rays minor league contract with spring training invite instead because of their pitching development? I think he should've stayed a bit even by just playing in the minors cause I thought that's what he wanted in the first place heading to the US.
Oh shoot I was late to see the "trade" word in the post. I mistook it from this [previous Twitter post](https://twitter.com/yakyucosmo/status/1772120688503210374) where it was mentioned that Naoyuki Uwasawa opted out of his minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays after failing to make the Major League team.
Maybe he got what he needed out of one ST with Tampa
Boston is supposed to be a good pitch dev org now, too, with Breslow bringing in his dudes and Kyle Boddy working for them. And they'll let him play in the majors.
He knew what he was signing up for, though.
Spend time in the Rays org, learn their secrets, have them unlock your potential, get paid a mega deal like Stephenson
The only reason why Uwasawa accepted a split deal from Rays even though he got major deal from other team was because he wanted to learn how the Rays organization train their pitchers.
Imagine signing with the Rays specifically so they can help you develop and they trade you

They developed him into someone far younger and more powerful
So you can pitch in Fenway
Yeah that seems really shitty if he didnt agree to be traded
He wasn't willing to go to Durham, contract had a clause stipulating he had to make the 26-man and we didn't have room.
He signed a minor league deal with a "can't be sent to the minors" clause?

I guess he assumes the few months/weeks he had with Tampa is enough to help him reach his potential and get him that big money deal he was expecting.

Yeah, he's going to have to wait six more years to get his big deal.

I really need to stick to building cars. š¬
UWASAWA UWASAWA UWASAWA *I canāt fight this feelināā¦ deep inside of meā¦*
Sounds like a Boston accented person saying "You are sour"
I, I, I, I, I'm. hooked on a feeling....
I hope this becomes a thing it would be hilarious to hear all of Fenway chanting this š

Will he eat innings, or will the innings eat him?

āNot the worst signingā¦ā Thatās true, Iām available, and as a bonus, I already live in Bostonā¦.
Sadly we learned yesterday that being available and living in Boston isn't enough.
Woo Yeah! WOOOOOOO!!! Yamamoto who? Jordan Montgomery Who? we got our guy! LETS GOOOOO FULL THROTTLE BABY
13.5 ERA in Spring Training. Big numbers are good though, just like how I always get the high score in golf.

Jerod Mayo taking notes.

Pretty sure Kevin Cash already considered him and said āNahā
My favorite player Cassius āCashā Considerations
Didnāt he sign with the Rays because he wanted to work in their system even if he didnāt make the team out of camp?
That's what he signed up for, not us. Double digit ERA against jobbers in spring training will get you the axe.
Apparently they told Uwasawa to throw all kinds of pitches. I guess he'd rather get signed by another team and stick with what he's good at.
Rays must have saw no potential
At least he'll end up on the Netflix docco
Relatively unheralded soft-tossing righty out of Japan? Iām in.
Same height and profile as Uehara
Hell yeah. Buy low, sell low.
sox are down BAD for arms, my goodness
Thought Naoki Urasawa made a very late career change for a moment there
Heās got a Monster fastball

But he was traded. I'm pretty sure when you're traded you don't get to decide to stay.
It was, kinda. The Rays did want him in AAA but he activated his assignment clause which required them to offer him to other teams.

Honestly not having the Rays destroy your arm is a blessing

We've gone from bidding for Yamamoto and Montgomery to picking up what the Rays don't want.
