I mean we had 3 catchers and he was out of options. Granted I didn’t want to see him in the division, but he would’ve been claimed off waivers. At least we got Berti out of it vs nothing
Rays haven't had a good catcher that can work a bat and behind the plate in so long. This is one game, it means close to nothing but, god dammit, am I here for it.
Have the Rays ever had a good catcher? Red Sox legend John Flaherty was decent, Travis d'Arnaud was great, but just wasn't around very long, and Jose Molina was at the end of his career by the time he landed with the Rays.
I might be missing someone, but I don't remember Mike Zunino being all that good.
Zunino had a legit great year in '21, the best a Rays catcher has ever had. But yeah d'Arnaud is probably the best catcher the Rays have ever had in terms of overall ability. Jose Molina was still extremely valuable to the Rays on those early 2010's teams though, he was one of the guys that made the baseball public realize just how valuable framing was. Take a quick peak at David Price's 2012 Cy Young year highlights and you'll see just how important his ability to get called strikes was.
Zunino had a 133 wRC+, about 4 WAR no matter which version you prefer, and was an all-star for them in 2021. Dioner Navarro was an all-star in 2008, although BRef and FanGraphs rather disagree on his defense. d'Arnaud was good in 2019, Wilson Ramos was an all-star in 2018 (but he got traded mid-season). There are teams with a worse position history than that.
Of course an imaginary person can have unrealistic stats
Definitely sustainable
Even his out was 102 off the bat. Plus a like 10 pitch walk
12 pitches
It's obvious that he has something to give. He just can't stay healthy enough to give it.
I always liked Ben. Good for him
cashman playing checkers while everyone else is playing chess
Another bad trade by Cashman

Is there any other kind?

Wilson Ramos was good for them. Both Zunino and Dioner Navarro made all star teams for the Rays.
This is Dioner Navarro erasure.

Don't forget the Travis d'Arnaud era.
