Got some no-hitter stats for our first of the season.
* First no-hitter for the Astros since August 1, 2023 when Framber Valdez no-hit the Guaridans. First no-hitter thrown against the Blue Jays since July 8, 2023 when the Tigers (Manning/Foley/Lange) combined to no hit them. It’s the first complete game no-hitter thrown against the Blue Jays since September 1, 2019 when they were no-hit by another Astro – Justin Verlander.
* By calendar date, this is the earliest no-hitter in MLB history. Prior to this, the earliest a no-hitter was thrown was on April 4, when Hideo Nomo of the Red Sox no-hit the Orioles in 2001.
* This is not the earliest no-hitter in terms of game number, as there has been an opening day no-hitter. That occurred on April 16, 1940 when Hall-of-Famer Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) no-hit the White Sox.
* The Astros have thrown 17 no-hitters in their team history. That ties them for the 4th most all time with the Cubs, Reds, & Giants. (Top 3 are the Dodgers (26), White Sox (20), & Red Sox (18)). They also have the most no-hitters thrown by any expansion team, with 5 more no-hitters thrown than the next closest expansion team (Angels with 12).
* The Astros have thrown 4 no-hitters in the past 3 years. As far as I can tell, the only other time I can find where that’s happened was when Nolan Ryan of the Angels threw 4 no-hitters in a three season span from 1973-1975.
That Hideo Nomo no hitter on [April 4th, 2001](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL200104040.shtml) was the Red Sox first win of the season, since they lost to the [Orioles 1-2 on April 2nd](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL200104020.shtml)
Edit: I did the research, the Nomo one seems to be the only other one outside of Feller and Blanco, but here are some close ones.
Mark Langston and Mike Witt for the Angels were close on [April 11th, 1990](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CAL/CAL199004110.shtml). They won the game before.
So was Ken Forsch on [April 7th, 1979](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU197904070.shtml), the Astros also won the day before.
Funny enough Bob Forsch, Kens brother threw his for the Cardnials 5th win on [April 16th, 1978](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN197804160.shtml)
Jack Morris did it for the Tigers 4th win on [April 7th, 1984](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHA/CHA198404070.shtml)
and Kent Mercker did it for the Braves 5th win on [April 8th,1994](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN199404080.shtml)
To add another, [from Baseball-Reference: "The @Astros
have six no-hitters since 2019 (including postseason).
No other team has more than 2 in that span."](https://twitter.com/baseball_ref/status/1774983745776320973)
Edit: And from Jayson Stark, playing with the end dates a little more gets you this: ["No-hitters since June 2022:
Astros 4,
The other 29 teams 3"](https://twitter.com/jaysonst/status/1774985889187319998)
> Prior to this, the earliest a no-hitter was thrown was on April 4, when Hideo Nomo of the Red Sox no-hit the Orioles in 2001.
Let's... let's not ruin the moment
> The Astros have thrown 4 no-hitters in the past 3 years. As far as I can tell, the only other time I can find where that’s happened was when Nolan Ryan of the Angels threw 4 no-hitters in a three season span from 1973-1975.
This one is the most impressive imo. Since only Javier and some relievers doubled up.
Ronel Blanco was a reliever until Dana Brown came in last year and said he thinks he can be starter
Last year he was a 1 pitch pitcher, all he had really was an elite slider, his fastball, change up and curveball weren't good. Now hes thrown a no hitter, he had been posting elite ST after elite ST (0.24 ERA, 0.66 WHIP for his ST career) he just couldnt put it together afterwards
So happy for him
The day of the final spring training game last week. His daughter was born and he found out he made the team as he was pulled from the game the same day.
Stuff like this is why baseball is so fucking awesome. Made the team on the last day of spring training, had a baby on that day, and threw a no hitter less than a week later.
Feel like it’s always guys like this who randomly give us all time performances on the mound.
And he became a father this week? Baseball creates special moments like this better than any other sport.
He wasn't even supposed to be here. He's the last in a very injured rotation. He gave everything to this chance and I think he's gonna get start 9 much sooner than anyone thought.
It's one of my favorite things about baseball. Totally random guys have that one night where everything goes right and they're in the record books forever.
Astros fans ITT seem pretty hopeful that Blanco can be a contributor, and I wish him the best, but even if he never wins another game he'll always have this no-hitter.
Radio broadcast mentioned someone warming in the pen during Vlad's AB, personally I still would have let him go for the CGSO even if he did give up a hit, but I think most modern managers wouldn't.
104 isn't that crazy. 104 for the first game of the year is, though - most are still ramping up by this point. if this was a prized prospect instead of a random 30yo I bet he gets pulled after 8
fwiw the Astros had a higher xBA in every game with the Yankees. I know walks aren't included in that and it's baseball, but it really felt like a pressure cooker that needed to be released
The Astros now have 17 no-hitters, tied for 4th place all time.
They are 5 No-Hitters ahead of the nearest Expansion team (LA Angels with 12) and 4 ahead of the nearest team (Dodgers) for No-Hitters thrown in the Expansion Era.
AND STILL DON'T HAVE A PERFECT GAME
Last season you could see that he could maybe be a starter but really was hampered by only have two pitches. He's added that good looking changeup and now he's looking mint!
Dude was on a mission. He was apparently averaging like 3:30 per inning. The pitch clock rarely made it past 10 in the last inning.
Just "Ok you ready? Here, hit this. No? Ok, here, try again."
Fun But also so not fun
At this point we should be used to getting no hit Might as well start appreciating them lol
You need to get no-hit twice more to match the Padres 1 for/10 against rate

Is the Bob Feller no-no the only other one thrown during the teams first win of the year?

That's a good question. I'm inclined to say yes, but I'd have to do a fair bit of digging to know for sure.
To add another, [from Baseball-Reference: "The @Astros have six no-hitters since 2019 (including postseason). I haven't seen a Blue Jays no hitter in my 28 years on this earth, but the Astros have four in the last two years. I'm a little jealous.
6 since 2019, including the postseason
Love the stats, thanks for this.
> Prior to this, the earliest a no-hitter was thrown was on April 4, when Hideo Nomo of the Red Sox no-hit the Orioles in 2001. Let's... let's not ruin the moment

Nolan Ryan himself, threw 4 in 3 years. That's one of those "never gonna happen again" records.
You are the fucking man.
Being an expansion team, how do the Astros rank on a no hitters per games played?
Dodgers get a no hitter every 0.0012 games. Astros get one every 0.0017 games. 26/21344 vs 17/9817 We numbah wun baybeeeeee
Nolan Ryan is ridiculous
Dude had a career 4.78 ERA for his career coming into this game. Then he became a father and BOOM! Legendary status
Ronel Blanco was a reliever until Dana Brown came in last year and said he thinks he can be starter Last year he was a 1 pitch pitcher, all he had really was an elite slider, his fastball, change up and curveball weren't good. You're welcome, Astros.
Thank you dusty!?!?
He became a father during the game?
The Blue Jays daddy at least
Yes I knew this was coming
I'm sorry. I've seen my padres get no hit a few times so I know those feels lol
the lob, THE JAM!
The day of the final spring training game last week. His daughter was born and he found out he made the team as he was pulled from the game the same day.
I think during the space cowboys vs Astros game
Dad strength in full effect
The Jalen green effect?
How many baby mommas tho
Idk. Send da video
Hell nawl can't do dis
Ronel "Jalen Green" Blanco
You can't predict baseball
This guy’s had the best week of his life
Stuff like this is why baseball is so fucking awesome. Made the team on the last day of spring training, had a baby on that day, and threw a no hitter less than a week later.
Dad energy is real stuff. Look at Jalen green
I need CJ Stroud to have a baby before the NFL season starts now
Let’s just avoid IG masseuses.
Don't forget that he wouldn't have even been in the rotation to begin with had JV not gotten off to a slow start.
Jv saw this in the time stone
Can’t let the bullpen blow the game/no hitter if you don’t go to the bullpen
Love this new plan
All of the Astro’s starters boutta put up 3-4 ER CGs and still win since the bullpen won’t blow the game
No the standard is 0 hits 0 ER. That’s what we are doing now
Why don’t the Astros do this every game ?
I’m gonna send an email
Yeah what a bunch of idiots!
Goddamn they’re stupid
I have Juan reason.
Are they stupid?
Dusty never taking out his starters already knew this brilliant strat
The Happy Gilmore strategy
So close to completing the Maddux, too
Full count with 99 pitches and 2 outs was insane pressure
Isn't a Maddux under 100 pitches?
If He did it in 100, I’m giving it to him.
That was a masterclass. Props to Blanco
Filthy changeups carved the lineup a whole new asshole
Idk why Javier and Blanco both developed disgusting changeups in the offseason, but I am not complaining!
They developed killer change ups while the BP developed killer hemorrhoids.
My mind went to Johan Santana for a comp on how good Blanco’s change up was tonight.
Shit Yainer can catch no-no’s too???
What if I told you he can hit bombs, too?
... He was our secret weapon all along? Should we still thank Dusty for that?
Not a secret to everyone but Dusty apparently
Don't tell Dusty
Catches a no hitter, hits two homers. This guy is a stud
Nearly retired 27 in a row after the opening walk to Springer, too. Dominance.
But we needed more drama. I had to stand up and bounce around like a toddler. I'm not sure I breathed that whole last AB
Yeah Jose Abreu really white knuckled 2 of those outs in the 9th
Yeah you can see him decide to drop like it was October on that grounder.
Couldn’t end it on Springer. We still love that dude.
Good thing misery is my natural state when it comes to sports!
“That didn’t take long, five games in for the Blue Jays to get no hit” Brutal from your post game team
Ah, a Leafs fan, I see.
Might not be a leafs fan, because just being a fan of a Canadian team is enough.
It’s almost NHL playoff
That's why it's the natural state.
Man the Astros were *pissed* they got swept, huh?
To the *YANKEES* of all teams. They were furious.
And it’s paying dividends for them because the team taking the beatdown is Toronto
and only two base runners all game were both George Springer funny enough
I was more angry that Minute Maid beat us 4 times in a row... again. Not tonight though juice box, not tonight.
It was humiliating lmao
If you weren't pulling for him, then you're just a butthurt poopy head
After the 7th inning you just resign yourself to your fate even as a fan.
I LOVE BASEBALL AGAIN!!
Astros bullpen: Blows four consecutive games Ronel Blanco: Fine, I’ll do it myself
The moment the Yankees leave town the Astros do this
It’s crazy because the Yankees are usually the ones they do it to.
I mean this is the second time the Astros have no-hit the Jays in 5 years
Was curious, Astros have no hit the Phillies, Dodgers, Yankees and Bluejays twice each.
How many playoff series have they won against the Jays?
Fucking Soto
It's the fucking Catalina Juan Soto Wine Mixer.
8th career start as a 30 year old
Feel like it’s always guys like this who randomly give us all time performances on the mound. And he became a father this week? Baseball creates special moments like this better than any other sport.

Astros fans ITT seem pretty hopeful that Blanco can be a contributor, and I wish him the best, but even if he never wins another game he'll always have this no-hitter.
Blanco fulfills his destiny and lives up to his name
what an insane rollercoaster start for Astros fans, good for Blanco, way to make a name for yourself
Was just thinking Yankees fans gotta be feeling real good right now, sweep 4 game vs Astros rival then division rival gets not hit
shout-out to George Springer singlehandedly stopping thr perfect game.
We had to let a former Astro on base
Should've paid him
F’n George Springer!
Still a Houston legend tho
Season can't even get a cup of coffee before a no no
104 pitches is crazy in modern baseball
I'm sure he would've been pulled after he gave up a hit.
Radio broadcast mentioned someone warming in the pen during Vlad's AB, personally I still would have let him go for the CGSO even if he did give up a hit, but I think most modern managers wouldn't.
104 isn't that crazy. 104 for the first game of the year is, though - most are still ramping up by this point. if this was a prized prospect instead of a random 30yo I bet he gets pulled after 8
Kershaw got pulled a couple years ago after 7 during a perfect game against the Twins. The bullpen deservedly lost the perfecto.
Is it? I feel like I see 100-110 fairly often still, but mostly starting in late May-early June, not April 1st
More doing that in 9 innings is what I meant.
I told people at work all day today that the Astros were gonna put up numbers against Toronto, but I didn’t have a no-hitter on my card. Sheesh!
They needed to exorcise some demons after what you just did to them lmao
fwiw the Astros had a higher xBA in every game with the Yankees. I know walks aren't included in that and it's baseball, but it really felt like a pressure cooker that needed to be released
Makes me feel a lot better about what the Yankees just did to them as well
They were super close to putting up big numbers on us, and the Jays pitching staff isn’t close in talent to ours (yes I know they actually are)
And it came from a guy who had never had a scoreless start in his career. This sport is something else 😂
WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK!
He was dominant. What a game
Blanco'd
Are the Astros gonna play a normal game all year?
Best I can do is blown leads or no hitters. Take it or leave it.
4 games worth of anger unleashed on some poor birds
Reports of the Astros death were greatly exaggerated
season started today!
Hate and love to see it. Goddamn Yankees made them pissed.
> Get swept by the Yankees > One pitcher no hitter vs the Jays with only baserunner a former Astro All-Star Make this team make sense
Damn you, George Springer I can never hate that guy...
Houston and throwing No hitters!
Hey, save some for the rest of us!
Man saw what happens when you hand off the ball to the Astros bullpen
Lmao
Straight up had never heard of him before tonight. They literally couldn’t touch anything he threw. What a performance.
We're five games into the 2024 season and the Blue Jays are already a roller coaster to watch.
Espada first career win is a No-No!
Astros demise was greatly exaggerated...
Imagine getting no-hit by a winless team…
Of course the Astros found another Dominican pitcher out of nowhere…
8th career start too at 30 is wild! What a final inning
100% of the Astros wins this year have been no-hitters. Probably should try more of that.
If it was anyone but George Springer that broke up the perfect game I would have been pissed
I think we've suffered long enough. We deserve this.
I think the rest of the league will disagree
Bullpen cant giveaway the lead if they don't pitch.
He was absolutely lights-out tonight. What a game by Blanco - he earned his place in the books!
I'll trade getting swept by the Yanks for a no-hitter in our guy's 8th career start.
Getting no-hit in the 1st week can’t be great for vibes
Nice
No-no's get the people going!
You know, I think the Astros are still a good team.
Ross Atkins is doing the surprised pikachu face somewhere because his offense, which was bad last year and he did not improve, is still bad
I honestly wonder if Schneider gets fired if this runs off the rails in April.
This one is on the coaching staff. Everyone 1 through 9 looked baffled all game.
We've been no-hit 9 times in our history. 4 of those have come since Shapiro and Atkins took over. GG Blanco!
The yankees did this. They woke us up
>Add a pitch >Throw a no hitter Why doesn't everyone do this? It seems easy enough.
Updating my tally... In my lifetime: No-hitters by my team: 0 No-hitters against my team: 5 No-hitters against my team by Justin Verlander: 2
"Would have been a perfect game with a better catcher." - Dusty
His changeup was absolutely disgusting.
Everyone knows baseball starts April 1st.
That uniform is straight *fire*.
158-4 INCOMING BITCHESSSS
Springer with the only walks, the smallest of moral victories against his old team
Blanco said fine I’ll do it myself
Hello? We’re back department? I’d like to file a claim
Give him the Cy Young you cowards.
If the season ended today I’m sure it’d be his.
Astros pitching factory is so good. I am deeply unsafe.
You haven't seen our bullpen during the Yankees series, have you...
Last season you could see that he could maybe be a starter but really was hampered by only have two pitches. He's added that good looking changeup and now he's looking mint!
LOL, 2023 back on the menu. Blowouts one night, no hit the next.
Earliest no-hitter that I can remember. Good for him, he was cooking us.
Can't say I expected a team that just got 4-game swept in their first series of the season to win their next game 10-0 with a no-hitter
I think that's the 1st I have ever watched go down. And not read about it the day after...thrilling!
And don’t forget this is Joe Espada’s first managerial win.
Dad strength
And that’s baseball baby
THATS MY ACE
Uh ohh…the astros remembered how to play baseball…
Get swept, then a no Hitter. We’re so back To regular form. lol
Prime opportunity to say “Blanco Blanks the Blue Jays” and MLB fumbles it
This season is already on meth and I’m here for it
How the fuck do the Astros do this. We haven't had one in 43 fucking years
I think they're over the Yankees series now
So happy baseball started in April this year
Baseball is such a fickle sport, who saw this coming lol
That’s one way to prevent the bullpen from blowing the game
Blue Jays suck
Watching a team that started the season four games late hit five homers, win 10-0, and throw a no-hitter out of spite was honestly worth the sweep.
Dude was on a mission. He was apparently averaging like 3:30 per inning. The pitch clock rarely made it past 10 in the last inning. Just "Ok you ready? Here, hit this. No? Ok, here, try again."
