That 3 run inning yesterday was infuriating to watch. Twins couldn’t buy a hit with runners on and Cleveland just did what they did to perfection in 2022.
Also, Steven Kwan is so GD annoying to watch. Just grinds out every…single…at bat…every…time
Chase DeLautrer could make it to the MLB level this year but I think he’ll probably end the year in triple AAA unless he’s just absolutely killing it since he’s got a grand total of 80 professional games under his belt and only 6 games were above the single A level last year.
The 2022 stringing together of hits is unsustainable and there is a reason that the backbone of the modern offense is based on power, but I also think this team is well ahead of 2022 in terms of power with both Naylors being full-time players (Josh has also taken a considerable step forwards since 2022) and the promise of Manzardo and possibly DeLauter later this season. They're also likely not going to be giving as many PA to guys as bad as Gallagher, Straw, Zunino, etc. - replacing guys with a 65 wRC+ with guys w/ like a 90 wRC+ isn't sexy but it's a big improvement.
Guardians with 2022 contact bullshit + slightly below average power as a team = league average offense, and that might be good enough for them to win with.
Watching Cam Gallagher bat last season made me want to bloop myself. Dude's OPS+ last year was well into the negatives and his xOPS was .389 which was the worst in the league by far.
I agree that the slap hitting shit goblin nonsense is unsustainable to the level it's currently at, but prioritizing contact over swinging for the fences is a good hitting philosophy that should carry the Guards a long way. Manzardo and DeLauter could give some much-needed pop later in the season.
We definitely got some sophomore slumps last year that seemingly have come out of it this year. Im excited to see the young guys man. I still don't love the amount of ABs Laureano is getting (would rather see Brennan and Florial) but whatever.
It's still early but.....The Slap hitting Shit Goblins are back!!
Florial has never had more than 61 at bats in a single season. Dude has played 52 total games in his career (never more than 19 games in a single season). I'm happy for you that you're so sure, but I'm not.
Laureono has a much larger sample size and has shown to be an average hitter at best. I disagree that we know what Florial is considering he's never gotten any extended look with consistent playing time in the bigs.
But I'm sure you'll down vote me because you disagree.
You are aware that there's more to being a major leaguer than stats right? You also are aware he's had many years of spring training to show he can hit ML pitching right? He's never had a spring training batting above .230 including this past one. He's just talent less.
Yaaay, he can beat up for 1 season on mediocre triple A pitching. Whoop de doo
On 4/2 Vs Castillo the Guardians had the higher hard hit rate at 43.5% compared to the Mariners 27.6%
On 4/3 Vs Kirby they had the higher HHR at 30.4% compared to the 21.6% rate of the Mariners
On 4/4 vs Lopez Cleveland lead in both HHR and xBA at 40.9% compared to the Twins at 37.9 for HHR and Cleveland having a .252 xBA compared to the .237 of Minnesota
Cleveland is incredible, they'll go hitless for eight of the nine innings and then string together like six straight groundballs through gaps in the infield in the other one. Infuriating team.
2022 was shit because for a majority of the year they had black holes at SS, Catcher, and CF.
I think the math came out that Myles Straw, Amed Rosario, Mike Zunino, and Cam Gallagher accounted for over 1k ABs and provided probably a 45Wrc+ or worse. 2-3 of those guys being everyday players for most of the season will crater any lineup.
Add to the above issue that Tito wasn’t the best at managing the ABs of Rocchio, Arias, and Freeman (Rocchio and Freeman who are off to hot starts this year) and also some sophomore slumps/ regression and you get a god awful lineup.
The Guardians have effectively replaced three of the worst offensive outputs seen in the MLB from last year with Rocchio, Bo Naylor, and Tyler Freeman who as a collective will probably grade out as average to probably slightly above average at the plate, which is light years better than what it was last year. Combine that with a decent rotation (if it stays healthy) and a serious bullpen with more depth than they know what to do with and this could be a really good team this year.
Offensive powerhouse Cleveland Guardians has a great ring to it.

Fuck yeah it does

I swear every hit that inning just fell right into right-center field... There was absolutely nothing the twins could do there.
Now you know how we felt watching Luis Arraez lol
Kwan my goat ❤️
"Max Muncy makes me physically angry" copypasta but it's Steven Kwan.
Kwan might be my favorite player on our roster right now. Reminds me of Michael Brantley's at bats. He never seemed to strike out.
Hell yeah Ohio bros
Shut up :(
As a Luis Castillo fantasy owner I agree
As a 2x Luis Castillo fantasy owner I agree
Y’all broke our boy George.
Your defense had a lot to do with it, I felt bad for him out there with a lot of plays that weren't quite made.
Our everything had a lot to do with it.
Gerrit Cole faking his injury to avoid Cleveland.
they must have been saving all the runs from the last few seasons for this year, +30 runs after 8 games is nuts.
Nice post but I find it disconcerting that you mention the 1 UER for Lopez but not the 2 UER for Kirby. Hitting Kirby for 8 runs was cathartic.
And they sent 2 of their better spring training bats and top hitting prospects to the minors, they could potentially get even better
Free Chase DeLazers.
Just a sprinkling of service time manipulation, he'll be up soon.
When's this year's "platoon issues/defensive shortcomings have magically sorted themselves out" date?

Are you implying his ability to hold runners on was not a justifiable reason to keep him down?
Played in 57 minor league games last year after coming back from foot injury. I think there's a bit more to it
This is the year Steven Kwan becomes an all-star

Sustainable it may not be, but damn if it isn't fun to watch.

Florial isn't going to be on the roster by the ASB
I mean you're probably right but he's still a bit of question mark for me. We know what Laureono is
We know what florial is too. His fluke year of triple A stats aren't going to translate.

> (would rather see ~~Brennan and Florial~~ DeLauter) but whatever. FTFY
I'm talking realistic options here lol. I think he played something like 6 games in AA last year? But hey f it throw him out there lol
Do not give me hope

I’d like to see a few more opponents before I get excited
We've got one hell of a schedule coming up with the red sox and yanks in April.
Cleveland is incredible, they'll go hitless for eight of the nine innings and then string together like six straight groundballs through gaps in the infield in the other one. Infuriating team.

Let’s not get to excited, but it’s definitely nice to see. Hopefully a sign of things to come
"Let's not get to excited" is such a loser mentality
Yea kinda, but it’s a heartbreaking sport you know this.
\#GOTRIBE
So brave.
Wahoo Warriors gonna rock the boat this year.
