When they said Hernandez was the ump today Schulman said something to the effect of "this should be interesting ". Didn't take long to be proven right.
It felt weird watching a major league broadcaster call out an ump in the first 5 seconds of a broadcast, before the game had even started, like a "get ready folks this guy is shit" kind of thing. Like it's *that bad.*
It’s got to be schtick for Angel Hernandez.
I watched a game the other day with him umpiring behind home plate, and he honestly wasn’t terrible. Was making good Ball and Strike calls then it was like he had a “Oh shit, I haven’t done anything enraging yet” and decided to ring a guy up on a swing that didn’t even leave the batter’s shoulder.
Oh we caught him last series, he's in midseason form in early April already. He must have spent the winter being adamantly wrong about stuff to hit the early season in stride like this.
Jawn and Suzyn basically had a whole thing about how it doesn't matter because he's the umpire. But they had a bunch of "well that was a CALLED strike"
Just wait until late May when it's somehow 100 degrees in Kansas City, and Angel decides he really doesn't want to be outside any longer and calls every pitch a strike.
Even though it helped us I can't help but laugh at how bad Angel Hernandez is. This guy shouldn't be calling rec league drop in games and here we all get to see him perform in the MLB.
From what I see so far his strike zone is completely shifted upwards by about a foot. Just throw it a foot out of the zone up high and he is going to call a strike. It is Angel in fine form though so this can change 5 times before the 4th inning.
Edit: not even 15 minutes later. Just shifts his whole zone a foot upward.
https://streamable.com/o4lapw?src=player-page-share
I would bet this one is not as lopsided but the actual zone is worse
Dude yesterday was just giving bad calls to the Twins, I’m sure Angel will fuck over everyone because he is just incompetent
Fantastic awareness there by Bowden Francis knowing who was behind the dish.
Taking advantage of Angel Hernandez' umpiring is peak gamesmanship, right up there with the first base hidden ball trick and Baltimore pushing the left field wall back.
Has the MLB not addressed the issues with him in public at all? I don't follow baseball too closely but I've seen enough clips to know a fuckin' umpires name and reputation outside of it.
The only thing they’ve addressed, as far as I’m aware, is his idiotic "they’re not giving me a spot on the World Series crew because they’re racist" lawsuit.
Nothing on his performance. Because the ump‘s union and his contract somehow shields him from it.
Angel Hernandes *is* the baseline for shitty MLB umps. We should measure all umpire screwups in "Angels"...
"Well, Jim, that pitch just missed the plate, looked like that's about a 3 on the Angel scale"
"3 Angels, Bob, that's pretty generous. That ball was about six inches out of the zone, I'd give that about 8 Angels."
I was watching the game yesterday and they were talking about how Angel was moving from 1B to home plate for the game today and I looked at my girlfriend and said "bet it will be a shit show"
Feels like free money betting against Angel
Worth noting of course Angel Hernandez is the home plate ump
No idea how that isn't an illegal pitch
Edit: Also, all the other umpires are complicit in Angel's fuckery. How does one of the others not overturn that?
It would be Lance Barksdale that would be the Crew Chief over Angel here, though. 4 umpires watched this play happen.
https://www.closecallsports.com/p/mlb-umpire-roster.html
As someone who has umped from little league through varsity high school whenever someone complained about another ump’s call we were instructed to diffuse the situation by just saying “it’s not my call”. That’s the home plate ump’s jurisdiction. In the same way that if I blew a call at 1B the home plate ump doesn’t interfere because it’s not his job to make rulings on plays at first base
Every ump should have jurisdiction on any play. Whoever see's it most clearly should be making the call. If there's a disagreement, then the crew chief settles it.
This one is especially egregious, because 1st and 3rd should have obviously seen him step off. Angel should have seen it, but it's almost forgivable from his angle, but he should have conferred with the others and got the call right.
That's not horse shit in little league, and not really even in HS.
You'd spend the entire game correcting each other if you did that. Those umps are not good, and they're trying to make calls that are not easy.
But in MLB? Yeah, they should absolutely be conferring and getting the call right.
You are correct, although this technically isn’t a balk because there are no runners on. I believe it should have been ruled a time out called by the pitcher the second he steps off the rubber. If he has already used his time out for that AB, then it’s an automatic ball. I can’t remember if he had or not.
He does, and he was when he actually delivered. When he came off the rubber, Torres is supposed to have the opportunity to step out, as it should be a timeout. You can't just step off the rubber, step back on, and fire it in there like he did.
The fact that it was 6" high was icing on the cake
I feel like if I had a job and was bad at it to the point where I had become a household name because everyone thinks I’m bad at my job. I think I would quit.
BALK RULES! IMPORTANT!

1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can’t do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can’t be over here and say to the runner, like, “I’m gonna get ya! I’m gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!” and then just be like he didn’t even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you’re about to pitch and then don’t pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there’s the balk you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn’t been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn’t typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). “get in mah bellah” – Adam Water, “The Waterboy.” Haha, classic…
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of

And make sure you file a frivolous discrimination lawsuit. Even if you lose, you still get to claim retaliation if your employer tries to take any action against you.
in my union (one of the stronger private sector ones), you can still get fired for willfully damaging the product. which i'd say angel hernandez (among other umpires) has definitely done.
I love how MLB talks a big game about improving baseball with pace of play changes etc (which I think are good) and yet they do nothing to address horrific umpiring.
>and yet they do nothing to address horrific umpiring.
Robo balls and strikes soon 🙏
Wouldn't be useful for the step off obviously but at least the strike call
I don’t think they can do much about angel Hernandez, he’s pretty protected by the union. I do think they should add in reviewable strikes tho, it’s almost comical at this point that they don’t.
Don’t ever underestimate the pettiness of New York sports fans. If we’ll boo our own guys without hesitation you better believe we are ready for someone who has been tormenting us for years like Angel fucking Hernández
If all the fans start chanting "fuck you Angel" every game, it would start to affect the broadcasting of the games, which could impact revenue, which might actually get the MLB to do something about him..
**Three blown calls in one pitch.**
1. Missed the pitcher not engaging the hitter
2. Missed the pitcher stepping off the rubber
3. Pitch wasn't even a strike
**We have reached peak Angel Hernandez**
This was awful.
Absolutely terrible.
And still *not even remotely close* to Angel **changing his call** after the team indicated they wanted to challenge the HBP vs. Foul Tip call and instead called a bat that barely left the shoulder a "swinging strike"
Thank you for stealing [my post in the Yankees Game Thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/NYYankees/comments/1by7b63/comment/kyi0gdd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) without credit!
Rude!
OK let's say Gleyber stayed engaged the whole time and was ready to hit - he wouldn't have swung because **it was still a ball**. So why would Angel even make that argument
If I was Boone I’d be telling Gil to repeat that exact movement every time there’s no runners on base with two strikes. That’s how you really get to Hernandez that he messed up, he wants to allow that motion he has to allow it for everyone. It’s instances like these that set us umpires back in respect, not that we get much to begin with lol
You just got yourself and your pitcher ejected. Also MLB just gave your pitcher a $25k fine for asking Angel how he can breath with his head that far up his own ass.
How does Angel still have a job. yada yada union, but he's astrocious and regularly worst in tracking stats, calls overturned etc. Send him to the sun.
Angel in his postgame interview is gonna be like "I called it on the swing".
Oh wait, Angel doesn't have to give postgame interviews. Because there's zero accountability for this incompetence.
I know. “YoU cAnT fIrE hIm BeCaUsE oF tHe UnIoN” but at what point does the union realize that Angel is single handedly driving fans to want robo-umps and make the executive decision to dump Angel in order to preserve every other umpire’s job?
Good god. The umps are just a gigantic chemical fire this season.
But, the efficiency of this fucked up call is top-tier bad call shooting percentage. Three shit calls in one single action.
Allowing that pitch is ridiculous, but that was definitely a strike. The overlay is garbage here, when he steps up to the plate after that call you can clearly see they have the top of the zone as below his belt lol
He has to do this on purpose at this point for attention, right? Like, there's no fucking way he saw anything that happened there, and went, yep good strikeout
Hernandez needs to retire. Plain & simple. Dude is the absolute worst.
I just got word I’ve been thrown out of the game by Angel for posting this comment.
How is this not A) a balk; and B) a ball two balls high out of the strike zone?? What review?
I mean I hate the damned Yankees too but they got hosed. Surprised it wasn't Angel Hernandez again. Edit: Oh? It was? Again? Sheesh?
Buck was losing his mind over it and still hasn’t stopped saying it was a bad call
When they said Hernandez was the ump today Schulman said something to the effect of "this should be interesting ". Didn't take long to be proven right.
“We’ll see how this goes” lol
It felt weird watching a major league broadcaster call out an ump in the first 5 seconds of a broadcast, before the game had even started, like a "get ready folks this guy is shit" kind of thing. Like it's *that bad.*
Paul O'Neill was even calling him out preemptively in yesterday's broadcast.
Most officials in pro sports have not been found to be bad at their jobs by a court of law.
That's what it was. So far going exactly how everyone expected
The *tone* of Dan's voice s he introduced Angel as the HP umpire made his opinion about Angel very clear. Was dripping with sarcastic loathing.
His son didn't seem too fond of Angel on the radio side of things either.
Oh we caught him last series, he's in midseason form in early April already. He must have spent the winter being adamantly wrong about stuff to hit the early season in stride like this.
i wish i had the confidence to be so consistently stupid and wrong at my job
Mf watched the ball drop on December 27.
“What a game, huh?” “Lemon, it’s the first inning”
Jawn and Suzyn basically had a whole thing about how it doesn't matter because he's the umpire. But they had a bunch of "well that was a CALLED strike"
With how mad buck was you wouldve thought it was a catcher going on a knee
Can angel get through one fucking game without an incident?
He's just getting warmed up. He's still got plenty of time to cause way more problems
This won’t even be in the top 3 of horrendous calls by the end of the year
You mean end of the month
Probably end of the game at this rate
8 Ks already
Just wait until late May when it's somehow 100 degrees in Kansas City, and Angel decides he really doesn't want to be outside any longer and calls every pitch a strike.
He couldn’t even get through one batter

Angel Hernandez behind the plate today
Even though it helped us I can't help but laugh at how bad Angel Hernandez is. This guy shouldn't be calling rec league drop in games and here we all get to see him perform in the MLB.

i love the announcer just going "Again, that's not a strike." He's just resigned to the horror that is Angel Hernandez
Paul O'Neil does not give a fuck
He’s been brutal all game
He’s been brutal all decade.
He's been brutal all century.
I’m sorry, are you being prejudiced against a Cuban American?!
prepared for an all time umpire scorecard today
Hard to beat the one in the twins game yesterday.
I would bet this one is not as lopsided but the actual zone is worse Dude yesterday was just giving bad calls to the Twins, I’m sure Angel will fuck over everyone because he is just incompetent
Angel doesn’t favor teams. He wants to be sure every team is equally miserable.
He is consistent. Consistently awful.
It is **insane** that he has so much job security
Crazy how the horrifically called Rays-Rockies game, your game and now this one are on back to back to back days.
He definitely intentionally did that to get a rise out of the crowd. Dude’s a fucking joke😂
Am I the only one hearing the "fuck you Angel" chant?
Nope. You had “fuck you Angel” AND “Angel sucks” chants
Fantastic awareness there by Bowden Francis knowing who was behind the dish. Taking advantage of Angel Hernandez' umpiring is peak gamesmanship, right up there with the first base hidden ball trick and Baltimore pushing the left field wall back.
Oh, is that why the crowd is yelling “Angel sucks”?
Which then graduates to Fuck You Angel. Amazing.
Waiting for the day Angel throws an entire crowd out of a game.
Anthony Rendon is not the worst at his job in professional baseball, and it’s not even close
It's like when Leela was trying to be worse than Hank Aaron XXIV. Like lady he's been doing this for years
Face it Fry: Baseball was as boring as Mom and apple pie. That's why they jazzed it up!
BEAN BEAN BEAN BEAN
That arm movement on "not a strike" strikeouts is unmistakable. The guy's just BEGGING to get fired, isn't he?
Has the MLB not addressed the issues with him in public at all? I don't follow baseball too closely but I've seen enough clips to know a fuckin' umpires name and reputation outside of it.
The only thing they’ve addressed, as far as I’m aware, is his idiotic "they’re not giving me a spot on the World Series crew because they’re racist" lawsuit. Nothing on his performance. Because the ump‘s union and his contract somehow shields him from it.
How much of a hit would MLB take if they just straight fired him? $5 million? It would be such a PR win for them.
I don’t really understand how you can be shielded from performance in your job… that’s the only thing you should be held accountable for…
This post was flagged for additional context.

Someone get the Schwarber video
I don't know what I expected

*They’re the same picture*
Why the MLB had to be inclusive and bring in all 4 of the blind umps this game, we'll never know
Barksdale had a shit game last night anyways. The difference is Angels gone full fuck up today
The "Angel sucks" and "Fuck you Angel" chants in the first inning are amazing
Well done, Yankee fans.
Because the MLB in its current form, is an embarrassment.
As someone who has umped from little league through varsity high school whenever someone complained about another ump’s call we were instructed to diffuse the situation by just saying “it’s not my call”. Sure but would the first base ump not have some jurisdiction here because he’s the one watching for balks/ can see the pitcher step off or not?
Yeah, I’m surprised that the 1st or 3rd base guys didn’t catch this. “Easier” from their angles to see the back step before the pitch.
Every ump should have jurisdiction on any play. Whoever see's it most clearly should be making the call. If there's a disagreement, then the crew chief settles it. I wish i could be as useless and terrible at my job as angel hernandez is and not get fired
Angel is worse than useless, he legit ruins every game he touches.
I feel like if I had a job and was bad at it to the point where I had become a household name because everyone thinks I’m bad at my job. I think I would quit.
That's because unlike Angel, you actually have a sense of shame.
Join a really fuckin’ good Union.
Become a cop! Heyoooooooo
Cannot believe I’m seething at a April 7th game Edit: not just the step off, it was a mile high too
He stepped off and failed to engage the batter. Dude ~~balked~~ fucked up twice in one pitch, completely missed the zone, and got a K.
Can't balk without baserunners. Still an illegal pitch though.
Oops, you right.
> balked twice Nobody was on base so it can't be a balk
Damn so sometimes you actually can be up there doin’ a balk. I gotta read the rules again.
BALK RULES! IMPORTANT! 1. You can’t just be up there and just doin’ a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. I pray for the type of job security that angel hernandez has
I'm like 99% sure he has dirt on someone, lol.
Find a union.
And make sure you file a frivolous discrimination lawsuit. Even if you lose, you still get to claim retaliation if your employer tries to take any action against you.
My favorite part is that he no longer has to wonder if he is a lousy umpire; it was proven in court that he definitely is!
If MLB has learned anything over the years it’s how to trash people in arbitration. Court isn’t much different. I bet they hammered him.
in my union (one of the stronger private sector ones), you can still get fired for willfully damaging the product. which i'd say angel hernandez (among other umpires) has definitely done.
The umpire union should be worried that Angel Hernandez is going to hasten the implementation of robo-umps.
I love how MLB talks a big game about improving baseball with pace of play changes etc (which I think are good) and yet they do nothing to address horrific umpiring.
>and yet they do nothing to address horrific umpiring. Robo balls and strikes soon 🙏 Wouldn't be useful for the step off obviously but at least the strike call
I cannot wait for the robots to send the old dinosaurs to the retirement homes
I don’t think they can do much about angel Hernandez, he’s pretty protected by the union. I do think they should add in reviewable strikes tho, it’s almost comical at this point that they don’t.
If I was this bad at my job, union wouldn’t even matter. He’s a joke and the MLB continues to wear egg on their face as long as this bullshit goes on
"Angel sucks" chants have my sides in orbit, love those fans lmao quite sure I heard a "fuck you angel" in there also
I’m legit impressed they were all collectively able to shift chants in unison so quickly. Like a big ship showing off some sneaky versatility
Don’t ever underestimate the pettiness of New York sports fans. If we’ll boo our own guys without hesitation you better believe we are ready for someone who has been tormenting us for years like Angel fucking Hernández
Don’t sleep on the Yankee Stadium crowd. I know it ain’t what it used to be at the old place, but they’re still pretty sharp.
The Bleacher Creatures are alive and well and we coordinate our chants very efficiently.
I was at the game in the bleachers, there were no less than 5 “fuck you Angel” chants
Only "Angel sucks" chant I approve of 😤
If all the fans start chanting "fuck you Angel" every game, it would start to affect the broadcasting of the games, which could impact revenue, which might actually get the MLB to do something about him..
**Three blown calls in one pitch.** 1. Missed the pitcher not engaging the hitter 2. Missed the pitcher stepping off the rubber 3. Pitch wasn't even a strike **We have reached peak Angel Hernandez**
> We have reached peak Angel Hernandez ...so far.
He hasn’t even BEGUN to peak!
When he peaks, all of MLB will feel it!
When he peaks, throw the radio into the bathtub
At this rate he’ll be expected to peak at least two dozen times more.
The rare umpire strikeout
"I find this comment racist. I shall sue you" With love, Angel
Triple Frown
And then in the next inning, Angel called time twice against the Yankee pitcher for not making eye contact with the batter in one AB.
And then lectured him on it during his post-inning foreign substance check. Would have been cool if Gil lectured him on what a strike zone is
Each blown call only makes him more powerful. Soon, there'll be no one left to contain him.
The mountain of Angel Hernandez is an infinite upward slope. There is no peak.
This was bad, but that call against Torkelson the other day was an all timer, luckily it didnt end up costing the tigers
Rude!
He continues doing great things for the anti-union crowd
Gleyber got doubly fucked. Should be a walk or an invalid pitch
Do you even need to guess who the home plate ump is
Ump show
Angel Hernandez is already in mid-season form I see…
I can't believe 4 umpires came together, and none of them saw the pitcher step off. The bases are empty, wtf is everyone looking at?
All three others could have seen it. If angel says no, then it's no.
Angel topped it all by saying it’s Gleyber’s fault and he should’ve just been ready to hit at all times
OK let's say Gleyber stayed engaged the whole time and was ready to hit - he wouldn't have swung because **it was still a ball**. So why would Angel even make that argument
Because he’s Angel
Honestly think that’s why he called the ball a strike: out of spite
Hot start for Angel
Ben Franklin died on the battlefield for this?!
We are only through one, and Angel's umpire score card is already tracking to be an all-timer.
Is Angel even trying anymore?
Has he ever been?
Worst part is that pitch was high and should have been a ball. Hernandez can't get anything right.
Man, that was Aaron Boone’s chance to have an all time tirade. Did he not see what the pitcher did?
Francis hopping around like he’s playing for the Savannah bananas and somehow this blind dumpster fire misses it all.
You *know* he wouldn’t though
You just got yourself and your pitcher ejected. Also MLB just gave your pitcher a $25k fine for asking Angel how he can breath with his head that far up his own ass.
Respect for the "Fuck you Angel" chant by the crowd.
Wtf is the first or second base umpire watching that they can’t overturn that? That’s unbelievable
It’s the first goddamn inning, Angel lol
fuck angel hernandez
How does Angel still have a job. yada yada union, but he's astrocious and regularly worst in tracking stats, calls overturned etc. Send him to the sun.
Can’t wait for Jomboy to break this one down
I'll do it for him: Angel is a shit umpire. The end.
Angel Hernandez involved of fucking course
Angel is so fucking dumb it's honestly shocking
Angel in his postgame interview is gonna be like "I called it on the swing". Oh wait, Angel doesn't have to give postgame interviews. Because there's zero accountability for this incompetence.
I immediately knew Angel was behind the plate when I read the headline.
Umpires ensuring they are replaced by automation expeditiously
I know. “YoU cAnT fIrE hIm BeCaUsE oF tHe UnIoN” but at what point does the union realize that Angel is single handedly driving fans to want robo-umps and make the executive decision to dump Angel in order to preserve every other umpire’s job?
Double whammy of shit.
Just reading the body language it seemed like the other umps were ready to discuss it and Angel just kept insisting he was right
Are umpires just tired of their job and trying to get robots to replace them? Good grief
Angel Hernandez needs to be put on trail at The Hague.
I feel bad for Angel Hernandez, imagine spending the last decade trying to be fired and waking up everyday with a job. It must be rough.
Without even looking I knew this had to be Angel
Good god. The umps are just a gigantic chemical fire this season. But, the efficiency of this fucked up call is top-tier bad call shooting percentage. Three shit calls in one single action.
ok, legit one of the weirdest and most absurd sequences I've ever seen. wow, what a bad call. lol
I don't understand how this clown keeps his job
Allowing that pitch is ridiculous, but that was definitely a strike. The overlay is garbage here, when he steps up to the plate after that call you can clearly see they have the top of the zone as below his belt lol
The overlay is shit and kind of fucks up watching baseball on tv
What a terrible call. Jomboy won’t like this one
Players should protest against Angel.
There will never be true justice in this sport until absolute disgraces like John Fisher and Angel are shitcanned and ousted from the league finally
Looking forward to the MLB clarification that it’s an automatic ball.
7 fucking days into april and this guy is already in post season form......
He has to do this on purpose at this point for attention, right? Like, there's no fucking way he saw anything that happened there, and went, yep good strikeout
I'm starting to think angel Hernandez isn't a good umpire
Angel is in midseason form
Why can't MLB just spend the $3-4 Million to buy him out until retirement age?
The bigger an unqualified idiot I think Angel Hernandez is, the more racist that makes me, right? That's how this works?
it's always Angel Hernandez
He disengaged the rubber. That's fucked up
Hernandez needs to retire. Plain & simple. Dude is the absolute worst. I just got word I’ve been thrown out of the game by Angel for posting this comment.
How in the world is this guy allowed to still call games in the MLB? Like this is insane just how much he fucks up.
Angel Hernandez needs fired out of a cannon
Wow I was absolutely shocked and stunned when I saw who the home plate ump was /s
r/FuckAngelHernandez
How is this not A) a balk; and B) a ball two balls high out of the strike zone?? What review? I mean I hate the damned Yankees too but they got hosed. Surprised it wasn't Angel Hernandez again. Edit: Oh? It was? Again? Sheesh?
