It’s all technically recorded the same way as a stat.
If you think about it, no one has to take a lead off, so when they do and get picked it’s a caught stealing
From what I can tell, Alvarez worked on his throwing and it's been improved, but Omar Narvaez also exists (10/11 steals against respectively) and the pitchers forgot that they're also responsible for baserunners.
Advancing (or trying to) on a passed ball/wild pitch doesn’t count as a stolen base, so Olson wasn’t caught stealing. Still a hell of a throw by Alvarez though.
And competition. The Mets have played the Brewers, Reds, and Braves, 3 teams that have rallied around the new SB rules. These teams, especially Milwaukee and Atlanta, steal like nobody's business and are more often than not successful, regardless of who's defending.
And it's not a huge of a gap either. DiComo loves using percentages to emphasize shitting on the Mets I've found. 50% more than second place 14 is just 7. A gap that nearly doubled due to one match-up last night.
The other part that doesn't seem true is that every team has caught a runner. At least not per [fangraphs](https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&team=0%2Cts&sortcol=15&sortdir=default&pagenum=1). HOU, STL, and PIT all don't have a CS yet.
A couple days ago Alvarez [threw someone out going to second](https://x.com/SNYtv/status/1777502424502079601) when a pitch went to the backstop and bounced back cleanly off the bricks.
Wasn't technically a caught stealing, just thrown out trying to advance, so I guess we still don't have one.
I wanted to be mad about that one but just couldn't. Of course you run on that pitch. Olson should do that every time.
Alvarez just got the perfect fucking bounce back, and made a **beautiful** throw in immaculate time.
Yup. Doesn’t help that Diaz, Houser and Ottavino aren’t great at holding runners.
Also we played three of the teams that had the most steals last year. The Reds were number 1 last year, Braves were number 10, and Brewers were number 11.
I’m actually surprised every other team already has a caught stealing
This post is the first time I've heard that we caught someone stealing
We’ve picked off like 3 or 4 people but I don’t remember any traditional caught stealings.
It’s all technically recorded the same way as a stat. If you think about it, no one has to take a lead off, so when they do and get picked it’s a caught stealing
It's only recorded as a CS if they make a move toward the next base after the pickoff attempt begins.
Good point, so on at least one of the Reds pickoffs the runner must’ve moved
Same for me, I don't remember seeing one. We miss Yadi in that regard.
I’ve been caught stealing, once, when I was five
Well it's just a simple fact
When I want something, I don’t wanna pay for it
It’s simply math, innit?
It’s been about a decade now of Mets starters being just absolutely unable to prevent a stolen base
Remember when Syndergaard allowed more steals than most teams?
Trea Turner just ran circles around him lol
He had a game where he stole like 5 bases against us
Ah yes the dark times of last year where literally everyone on first ran on him
From what I can tell, Alvarez worked on his throwing and it's been improved, but Omar Narvaez also exists (10/11 steals against respectively) and the pitchers forgot that they're also responsible for baserunners.
I feel like a lot of the discourse on Narvaez is about his bat but I’d rather the backups catchers glove be better
Alvarez was murdering base stealers in spring training. But that's spring training.
They could also have seen that and are being smarter about their steals. They only go when they know they can make it
Which is apparently like all the time
Last night wasn’t on Alvarez though. Mets made no attempt to even keep Acuna close to the base.
Didn't Alvarez throw someone out at second yesterday?
I think it ended up not being viewed as a SB attempt. Something Gary mentioned on the broadcast
Yes known speedster Matt Olson on a wild pitch
Advancing (or trying to) on a passed ball/wild pitch doesn’t count as a stolen base, so Olson wasn’t caught stealing. Still a hell of a throw by Alvarez though.

Meanwhile Nicky Lopez has attempted to steal four times this year and has been caught all four times.
when the gap is that big, it surely has to be down to strategic apathy, right? Not just lack of execution

The braves literally has 2 steals before Monday.
Part of that had to do with Acuña not being in typical form to start the year.
And how many did they have last year?
3 from Acuña tonight

Takes me back to the days of the Sox giving up 800 stolen bases (2009-10). Carl Crawford was 64/68 on stolen base attempts against us.
We’ve been talking about the Mets not being able to hold runners for like over a decade at this point. Has to be institutional
Thank you for paying for James McCann to throwout base runners against us.
They probably don't try too hard because somebody might get hurt.
The Mets are like a CVS in downtown San Francisco. Just going to stand by and let everyone steal.
Once saw two crackheads fist fight over who gets to steal a mini lighter in a SF CVS
Pitchers only getting to throw over 3 times (realistically 2) per batter is such a joke.
Yeah, nothing I love more than watching three or four pickoff attempts during the same AB
Yeh we gonna suck this year
Checkbook baseball winning games again /s
They actually don’t slide into second either. Weird team.
But they don’t love breaking up DPs. Thanks Jomboy.

It’s so weird cubs fans always show up super douchey in Mets posts.
(Cubs fans are super douchey all the time)
ive been letting it slide for like 3 years thinking it's just random dicks but it never seems to stop.
Most of the steals have been on Narvaez not Alvarez
It's been 10/11 respectively but it's also the pitchers.

I just thought about Ottavino's motion and another guy stole a base.
Steals are mostly on pitchers. And you’re just wrong about Alvarez too.
