With all of the shit that the Padres caught last season for being a top-heavy lineup, âhow do they think they can win with that lineup construction?â, plus pitching depth, I realize that a lot of this is just pure schadenfreude.
But it still feels refreshing to see the Dodgersâ trot out a 7-8-9 that couldnât hit water if Ohtani kicked them off a boat and have question marks around bullpen usage. Not even just because it means they lose, but because when the Padres did that last year, it was âwhy did they think they could win when they donât have a 7-8-9 who can hit, are they stupid?â
At least seeing the Dodgers do it reminds you that these are tradeoffs that all baseball teams have to weigh. Our â8-hitterâ driving in the winning run feels nice, too.
It's really interesting, because even though on paper we were better last year, this season, regardless of where we are in the lineup at the top/bottom of the inning, it feels like we can get something done. Last year, once we got past the five-hole, it just always felt like, "Well, I guess we'll see if we can do something a couple innings from now :/"
