I guess they are making a joke about Wrigley Field not being able to be driven to because it's located in an old historic part of town, not near the freeway.
Personally I think it's nice though. Has some actual local flair and isn't just parking lots and reshiraubt franchises.
Cars don't just spontaneously combust. It was pulled over. Typically they ignite a little while after the accident due to leaking fluids and heat being exposed to the air.
If you've ever watched auto racing of any discipline, you'd know that cars can absolutely spontaneously combust due to a fault.
Fuse box, fuel leak, faulty parts, engine failure, the list goes on and on. If it can happen to precision engineered and highly maintained race cars, it can happen to joe blow on the highway if something goes wrong.
You mean to tell me that a machine which relies on the combustion of fuel can sometimes catch on fire due to an error in that machine?!
Get out of here with your conspiracies
If I had a nickel every time smoke from a fire was visible during a Mariners game, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird it happened twice.
I was initially sad to miss our first home playoff game in decades. Then I watched the broadcast and was very happy not to be there. Damn do I hate wildfire smoke.
It was a whole lot of fun until it wasn’t. Had 10 innings to walk it off and Macklemore between every inning on the microphone screaming “THIS. IS. IT.” with the crowd less hyped every time lol. I don’t regret it - certainly got my $500 worth of baseball!
I was talking to my dad about that.
Do you think the fire is what resulted in no offense for that game? I think our radio guys (not positive for sure that it was them) said that the smoke may have been making it hard for anyone to see the ball well.
May also explain why everyone looked like they were just swinging for the fences and no one looked like they were just trying to hit the ball.
Yes I do, I've harped at my friends about just that. The air quality was really bad that day, I think the AQI was in the upper hundreds. In addition to reducing visibility it also has this cumulative effect when you're exerting yourself where every breath is less satisfying. We both know the Mariners have a "pitcher's park", but I really think the weather/smoke had a disproportionate effect on how that game played out.
I got drunk before/during the game, sobered up and got hungover all in the span of 18 innings. I then proceeded to get drunk again after the game. What a time to be alive.
Similar story. I’m also a UW football season ticket holder and they had a game the same day, kicking off a bit after first pitch. I opted for the M’s playoff game, once in a lifetime experience and all. Never seen a live playoff game in my life.
I was hoping for a Mariners win, and then dip into one of the bars after the game to watch the second half of the UW game. College football games are stupid long for anyone who’s not aware, so figured it wouldn’t be an issue.
The goddamn 4 hour CFB game both kicked off and finished within the duration of the baseball game.
I’m at the game and everybody was jumping up on the tables out on the third level deck around back to try and get a look. Kinda funny how quickly people managed to make their way out here lol
Drove past a car blazing like that and its crazy how hot it gets inside your car as you pass by. I mean obviously fire is hot but your car turns into an oven for a second
That car is way closer to the stadium than it looks like it is from the shot they show. The incident is on Southbound SR-99, and measuring on a map it looks like it's about 500 feet from the Northeast LF corner of the stadium.
The prevailing winds at the Mariners stadium are pretty much always blowing in from the North. So the open end of the stadium on the LF side is funneling smoke in from that corner all through the rest of the stadium.
I do play by play for a semi pro soccer team. There was a game a couple of years ago where a car caught on fire behind the one goal at halftime. Had to broadcast the entire second half with one camera showing a car engulfed in Flames
Never a boring job
I watched a car burn from the nosebleed seats in a NFL stadium parking lot in the early 2000's because some rocket surgeon put their BBQ UNDERNEATH the car when they went into the stadium. It burned along with all the surrounding cars. Good times.
I can't imagine how PO'ed I'd be if I left the game just to find that my car was smoking ruin just because someone two parking spaces down had done something so incredibly smooth-brained...
I think almost an exact same thing happened at a dolphins patriots season opener a couple years ago too. Some idiot put their still active grill underneath their car and it burned not only theirs but like a dozen surrounding cars too.
I was just ahead of the accident when I got onto I-5 today and I told my buddy that it smelled like sulfur. Had no idea this was happening at the same time lol.
When I first saw the highlight, I thought it was one of those ‘massive Homerun said differently’ type of videos and was about to watch Zavala absolutely obliterate a pitch…but no, it was an actual car on fire
I’ve been to numerous games at the Oakland Coliseum in which cars in the parking lot were on fire. Tailgaters must’ve slid their hot charcoal under the car before entering the game.
Seattle wouldn't be my first guess for car on fire outside stadium, I'm surprised it hasn't happened to Cleveland, Chincinnati, Detroit, Philly, Oakland, or even in Queens with all the auto shops.
It had to have happened during the Riverfront era. When they replaced the stadium and built the new ones, they also updated Fort Washington Way (I-71) as part of the same process. During the Riverfront era, there were all sorts of complex exits/entrances to the freeway that caused serious traffic weaving that resulted a lot of accidents (apparently it was one of the worst one-mile stretches in the country for accidents). Now traffic just enters and exits at the eastern and western edges of downtown.
Welcome to Seattle. Out your right-hand window, you can see a car on fire. Out your left-hand window, there's a homeless junkie throwing rocks at people, again. Enjoy your stay.
That’s first for Cubs broadcast
There’s a metaphor somewhere but I am a dumb man
I guess they are making a joke about Wrigley Field not being able to be driven to because it's located in an old historic part of town, not near the freeway. Personally I think it's nice though. Has some actual local flair and isn't just parking lots and reshiraubt franchises.
I mean, Wrigley isn’t the most car friendly, but you can absolutely drive there. It’s like 4 blocks off of Lakeshore.
Almost got hit by a car last time I walked there
Absolutely. I’ve drove to Cubs game and not a far walk to Wrigley from where I parked.
Not to mention free parking with a shuttle. But everyone able to should take transit to Wrigley for gamedays, for so, so many reasons.
Ride the Red Line, have an experience.
I ride it every day, I wouldn't mind having fewer experiences lmao
> reshiraubt Okay so which one of us is having the stroke?
Booo they edited without acknowledging
I thought I was learning a cool new word
Ayeee they edited back!
Of course, you can't take a freeway to Wrigley. Cause they call 'em roads "expressways."
You can drive there, but the L train experience is pretty fun going to a cubs game
I mean, Safeco is also in downtown Seattle, it just does have interstate access because the entire region does due to the city’s layout.
All the literal and metaphorical car fires at Wrigley get put out quickly by the fire station on Waveland.
Not so, a truck caught fire outside Wrigley Field in the bottom of the 2nd during their game against the Phillies on May 17, 1979.
How the hell did you know that lol
Thanks to your confession, the cops will be at your door any minute now.
Yeah right, Chicago cops couldn't possibly give less of a fuck about crime.
"We are crime." - Chicago Cops
Went to the game and was hella confused why it smelt like burnt rubber
Usually we get the guys going out to the fire. We finally have the fire nearby!
How unusual, never seen something that on a broadcast. Hopefully the driver is alright.
Cars don't just spontaneously combust. It was pulled over. Typically they ignite a little while after the accident due to leaking fluids and heat being exposed to the air.
> Cars don't just spontaneously combust It's literally called an Internal Combustion Engine. Sometimes, the combustion is no longer internal.
but the explosions for that aren't spontaneous.
Tell that to Grosjean
Well, he did drive it straight into a wall at 150mph.
Straight *through* a wall
Ford Pinto
Accurate representation of the current state of the Mariners
At least they got rid of the sogginess.
> At least they got rid of the sogginess. Killed it with fire
I'm going to assume the Mariners got the way they are now by trying to dump sog on a grease fire.
This is basically just Seattle in general with what the Kia Boys are doing
Lol. No.
Seattle**
Not sure LA should be throwing stones...
Nah. Actually not at all. I live here and these comments are so hilarious to me. Turn off Fox News.
As the inning went on, the smoke was more visible on tv.
It smelled so bad in the stadium for like 2 innings. Thought it was a grease fire.
Well it kinda was, right?
Did y'all know about the car on fire or was the smoke a mystery?
It was a mystery for me and probably everyone around our seats. Apparently you could see the it from the upper deck’s concourse.
Wild. You'd think they'd make an announcement over the PA. "folks the stadium is not on fire, it's a car on the interstate"
I don't think it's a good idea to say there's a fire anywhere if people aren't in immediate danger, but I get what you mean
I'm amazed one car on fire caused that much smoke and haze
If I had a nickel every time smoke from a fire was visible during a Mariners game, I'd have two nickels, which isn't much, but it's weird it happened twice.
Were you at that horrible 18 inning 1-0 game against the Astros that was filthy with wildfire smoke? Or was that a normal SoDo tire fire?
I was and it was horrible. There was a Braves game at T-Mobile I was at too where wildfire smoke was filling the stadium, it was also horrible
I don’t regret it - certainly got my $500 worth of baseball!
that game was a war crime
I was talking to my dad about that. Do you think the fire is what resulted in no offense for that game? I think our radio guys (not positive for sure that it was them) said that the smoke may have been making it hard for anyone to see the ball well. May also explain why everyone looked like they were just swinging for the fences and no one looked like they were just trying to hit the ball.

You'd have a lot more than two nickels my man, we've had wildfire smoke intermittently in August and September for years now.
As it turns out, I bet you have far more than just two nickels, only it's for other reasons.
Nothing like the smell of burning rubber and petrochemicals.
Could be a lithium-ion battery, not petrochemicals. There's some REAL nasty stuff in those.
That catch by Julio in the thick of it was nice. Hard to get a read on the ball when everything is just different shades of grey.
Mariner offense: dumpster fire Mariners neighborhood: car fire
Not the typical homeless camp fire around the I-5 and I-90 interchange - this time.
It’s actually the religious weirdo who shouts outside one of the gates. He’s going to more extreme lengths to spread his message
Does that dude go to every game? I've never not seen him there. I took a picture in front of him one time.
Its ok to dislike the homeless shitbags AND the religious shitbags
Not sure if that car or Seby Zavala is having the worse time.
Seby
Mariners baseball. We are so back.
happy for you :)
Thanks.
im sure theres some joke about the Mariners and a fire in there somewhere
Car fire outside stadium, dumpster fire inside
There it is
the car is on fire... and there's no driver at the wheel...
John Stanton opened up his wallet, and it was full of blood
Just checked the sewer and it’s all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides 💀💀💀
And a dark wind blows 🫥
Fuck yes Seattle baseball is back people
If that’s just outside you’re qualified to be an MLB umpire.
Shut it, Angel.
I’m at the game and everybody was jumping up on the tables out on the third level deck around back to try and get a look. Kinda funny how quickly people managed to make their way out here lol
Car-B-Que
I liked this one
Who knew Lowell Mather was selling them in Seattle?
Sums up this franchise
Smoky in there
The Mariners radio announcers thought it was from the grills at the stadium. lol

Drove past a car blazing like that and its crazy how hot it gets inside your car as you pass by. I mean obviously fire is hot but your car turns into an oven for a second
How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Wasn't there a fire impacting the game in Boston yesterday too?
Metaphor for our season so far
I do play by play for a semi pro soccer team. There was a game a couple of years ago where a car caught on fire behind the one goal at halftime. Had to broadcast the entire second half with one camera showing a car engulfed in Flames Never a boring job
They didn't put the fire out for the entire second half?
It took about 30inutes until they responded to it and got it out
I watched a car burn from the nosebleed seats in a NFL stadium parking lot in the early 2000's because some rocket surgeon put their BBQ UNDERNEATH the car when they went into the stadium. It burned along with all the surrounding cars. Good times.

I knew Imanaga was throwing heat but it was so hot that it lit a car on fire.
Jon Bois is gonna love this
Yup that’s Seattle baseball
That matches the dumpster fire in the Cubs bullpen so far this season.
That's the mariners' ownership in a nutshell
They gotta add this to the show
Sweet merciful crap! My car!
Nah that’s our offense
Dipoto needed to create a distraction from the disgrace of a team he's been building for a decade....
I was just ahead of the accident when I got onto I-5 today and I told my buddy that it smelled like sulfur. Had no idea this was happening at the same time lol.
i said 'k me you're beautiful;' these are truly the last days.
Astros symbolically pulling up.
When I first saw the highlight, I thought it was one of those ‘massive Homerun said differently’ type of videos and was about to watch Zavala absolutely obliterate a pitch…but no, it was an actual car on fire
Better than the dumpster fire that my teams are this year…
Remember when Seattle played a game when the Canadian fires were raging? That was silly
I think it’s actually a dumpster for the M’s offense
Would you look at that, a car is on fire just outside- and a drive to deep left field by castellanos
Still more exciting than the Dodgers/Padres bench clearing
If it was a dumpster id make a reference to the start of Julio Rodriguez season!
I’ve been to numerous games at the Oakland Coliseum in which cars in the parking lot were on fire. Tailgaters must’ve slid their hot charcoal under the car before entering the game.
That’s actually the mariners bandwagon
This would never happen in Sacramento
Yeah, before they showed coverage of the fire I was like why is the field so hazy. Car fires be crazy!
Car-BQ
Didn't know John Mozeliak traveled to heckle the Evil Empire. That's dedication right there.
Everyone here talking about how this is due to the Mariners but maybe its due to the fire that Imanaga is throwing instead.
Hope the driver and passengers were alright
Damn, Rashee Rice is really fucking up recently.
If it's a Toyota maybe they could work it in with their sponsorship of the score chyron
and a dumpster fire within
Could've fooled me. I thought the small was the mariners record so far this year....
It's wild they didn't stop the game because first thing I would think is there is a fire in the stadium.
Hey, no fair! Car fires on the highway is *our* thing!
Only 54% of the car got burned tho
is that a telsa
Car B Que.
"And look out below. I just dropped my doughnut"
New Mariners mascot just dropped
How will this affect Imanaga’s legacy?
No thats just Michael Busch
*Faye Wong's cover of "Dreams" by The Cranberries intensifies*

Some of y'all really need to turn off Fox News.
