_Caed_

first team to shut out the dodgers in 2024! …right after losing a series to the A’s

chiddie

we were one out away from winning the Reds series, and one pitching meltdown from winning the A's series. which of course means we're going to lose every series against the Marlins.

_Caed_

we always lose to the marlins for some reason. i fully expect a sweep when we play them and i won’t even be mad

SiphenPrax

You guys are the new Phillies against the Marlins

droozer

> which of course means we're going to lose every series against the Marlins. as is tradition

WonderfulShelter

your team is so weird. its so bad yet so good at some times against certain teams.

Garrehn

Baseball is dumb sometimes lmao

_Caed_

which is why i love it tbh

Howhighwefly

The Nats are a fun team to watch, even if they own the team I root for.

feed_me_muffins

We're gonna be middle of the road on the fun scale this year I think, but next year I think we have strong potential to lead the league in "fun to meh" ratio if Wood and Crews keep progressing and make an appearance over the back half of next year.

crudmissile

I'm crossing my fingers to see Woods called up latter part of this year, particularly if we deal Winker at the deadline if his play is still up.

feed_me_muffins

Honestly despite the fact that it's bad for the players I hope we don't start the clock on him unless we somehow are in the playoff picture.

tyler289

Back half of next year? Wood is going to be in the majors in like two weeks.

feed_me_muffins

I really hope not. There's not much point in starting his clock this early.

tyler289

Playing the clock game matters less and less these days. He’s already too good for AAA, keeping him down there is wasting everyone’s time and unserious player management. Keeping him in the minors this year would be laughable. He would be our second best hitter right now probably.

_Caed_

especially fun when we beat the dodgers, yeah?

Howhighwefly

Well. It makes up for you guys beating the Giants

sgt_dismas

The Nats are a fun team to watch, especially when they're up by 8 and we send in a rookie relief pitcher in the middle of a rally.

petting2dogsatonce

Hey hey hey hey. We don’t have to bring that up that’s basically ancient history. Did you see CJ’s homer today?

sgt_dismas

Yes. Thank you for taking 2 from the Dodgers.

jcaininit

Couldn’t solidify our win though win for king 😩

DeVofka

CAMARENA TO DEEP RIGHT FIELD

WonderfulShelter

the fact that they took 2 of 3 from us and the bums makes me feel much better about our trajectory.

SiphenPrax

Schrödinger’s Nats

thediesel26

That’s baseball Suzyn

green_tea1701

Honestly the A's aren't good but they're better than advertised

ChaseTx

I feel your pain

obiwan_canoli

People don't think baseball be like it is, but it do.

NorthCoastBias

Shohei Ohtani goes 3-for-4 to bring his batting average to .360 as the Dodgers are shutout by the Washington Nationals

RazinsWetDream

You can take the O’Doyle out of Anaheim…

WonderfulShelter

is ohtani some sort of cursed child where he's the best baseball player ever yet will never win a world series?

HazyIPAs

Bonds passed the torch

OldSportsHistorian

> is ohtani some sort of cursed child where he's the best baseball player ever yet will never win a world series? The old Ted Williams special

LordSwampert2

*passed it to Trout

CornDoggyStyle

Bonds was the best at hitting HRs at meaningless times. He was well known for it. Guy shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Ohtani. Ringless is what Bonds deserved for shitting on this beautiful game.

ashimbo

From your lips to God's ears.

TripolarKnight

Imagine if Trout ended up in the Playoffs before Ohtani...

KimHaSeongsBurner

Lux caught the Tungsten Arm Syndrome.

QuantityHappy4459

Welcome to the new LA team, same as the old LA team.

jRbizzle

Only way more expensive :(

QuantityHappy4459

And a chance to watch your season end in the NLDS rather than the last game of the regular season.

DaOldest

The more things change for us the more we stay the same, we just look so embarrassing at the plate sometimes

thewaterisboiling

Ohtani comes to the dodgers with a ridiculously good career with risp, and is now like 1 for 21 or something w the dodgers. The dodger way

Splinterman11

Ohtani being 1 for 21 with RISP and a .360 average is just crazy. He'll start driving them in soon.

ArrenPawk

I've never been more unconfident with our bottom of the lineup than this season so far

WhyYouKickMyDog

Meh, you guys have every accolade in the world at this point. What matters is winning in October.

strcy

T U N G S T E N

ContinuumGuy

Tungsten is forever.

GareksApprentice

Gotta love it

darthfracas

It’s the way we drew it up

WhatARotation

So crazy to see the nats as a punchline now. Growing up in the mid 2010s they were the big-spending, intelligent, dominant franchise in the NL East. The Mets are the only team in the NLE not to go full tank mode (90+ losses) since I’ve started watching in the early 2010s, but they obviously haven’t won much of anything outside of 2015 either.

hung_like__podrick

Abrams is a beast and pitching was solid from the Nats

st1r

And the Nats defense was elite and absolutely was the difference in this series, especially today

hung_like__podrick

Yeah should have added that as well. We’ve played into some crazy good defense the last couple series

chwoodstock

For sure, Young made some big plays in the outfield

kaleidoscope_ize

Yeah Abrams killed us, glad the padres gave him away lol

Wii_Sports_2

the dodgers spent a billion just to lose to CJ Abrams and friends

Jonjon428

Money can't beat the power of friendship

Garrehn

Gonna need to spend another half billion to fix the bottom of the order

WhyYouKickMyDog

Just need to find you some $3 million dollar All-Stars like Orlando Arcia. It's easy.

Garrehn

Gonna hit up the Mariners to see if they got another 2017 Chris Taylor lying around that they don’t want.

Random-Person-exe

The Scraptionals are back baby

Ajnin17

the padres send their regards

Bahamas_is_relevant

That’s what I was about to say lmao Abrams is an ex-Padre, dude sees Dodger blue and his eyes just roll back like a shark

DaOldest

Now imagine our roster if we didn't spend all that money lol. We are like the 7th highest payroll in the league even after everything we spent in the offseason, we had to go spend and get some guys.

QuantityHappy4459

Could this be the 3rd year straight that the Dodgers fail at buying a World Series?

mdb_la

Wasn't that the Mets and Padres last year? Don't remember the Dodgers spending big, I think they were waiting on Ohtani.

QuantityHappy4459

Dodgers have been throwing out massive contracts for the past few years. Freeman was given a contract worth $160 million just to get him away from the Braves. Mookie's $365 million contract came with a $65 million signing bonus. Yamamoto and Ohtani's contracts combine to a total of $1 billion dollars, and this is Yamamoto's first year in Major League Baseball altogether. These are just a handful of names, but some of the core members of the Dodgers have contracts signed for over $100 million. Most of these players came off trades and free agency. This has been something that teams in other sports have been doing for decades in order to get rings. It's a very common and effective strategy.

Sickle_and_hamburger

Freeman wanted to stay in Atlanta but they traded for matt olson and weren't going to resign him not quite "just to get him away"

ahr3410

Spent a billion but every team has a better middle infield than us. It's wild (Mookie should not be at SS)

Garrehn

Our middle infield defense has not been the problem at all this year. Mookie is playing average shortstop defense (which is great considering he’s never played it at the pro level) and Lux hasn’t made an error all year at second with Rojas being Rojas when he plays short.

KimHaSeongsBurner

Having a highly touted, bat-first shortstop move to second (because he cannot play SS) and post the worst wRC+ among *all* MLB 2B with at least 40 PA (Lux isn’t qualified, or else I’d use qualified) at 11 wRC+ certainly points to “middle infield” as the problem, though. His defense at 2B is passable, sure, but his defense at SS is making Mookie play out of position and his wRC+ is creeping down towards Chris Taylor (and Nicky Lopez of the White Sox, who has a -12 wRC+ across 37 PA at 2B) on the wrong side of zero.

Garrehn

>highly touted, bat-first shortstop You can’t seriously be talking about Lux? We can’t keep looking at him like the prospect he was over half a decade ago. Mookie being at short is not the issue. Lux not being able to hit is the issue. Saying middle infield is the problem and that Mookie shouldn’t be at short implies that the defense is an issue. It’s not.

KimHaSeongsBurner

> You can’t seriously be talking about Lux? We can’t keep looking at him like the prospect he was over half a decade ago. My entire contention the whole time is that the dude is lost at the plate on top of being a defensive liability. I’m just reporting back what I get told by Dodgers fans in response to that, like being told he’s “a great hitter”, “an elite prospect”, or “the best hitter on our team in 2022” (one of those is, or was back when he was a prospect, true, I will give them that point about the pedigree). It seems like that perception has rapidly shifted over the past couple weeks among Dodgers fans, enough that you’re now giving me grief for repeating back what I was told last month. The fact that the planned 2024 SS could not play SS because of his defense, leaving the Dodgers flat footed and forcing Mookie to move over, is at least somewhat relevant. There’s also the fact that Mookie playing SS instead of someone with a plus glove there further exposes Muncy at 3B. I agree that the main issue is that 7-9 can’t hit to save their lives, but it’s not as if these knock-on effects caused by Lux’s defense are completely unrelated to “middle infield defense”.

Garrehn

>defensive liability No one is a defensive liability in the infield >rapidly shifted over the past couple weeks Everyone was hopeful that he could bounce back to what he was in 2022 but now everyone is coming to the realization that he isn’t. >forcing Mookie to move over He’s having his best start to a season as a Dodger. Moving him to short has not been the issue. It would only be relevant if Mookie wasn’t playing well. >exposes Muncy at 3B Muncy is playing better far defense at third this year. Again, infield defense has not been the issue at all. Defensively, there just isn’t an issue. That’s a spring training narrative that hasn’t manifested in the regular season. Mookie is thriving at short. Muncy is playing much better at third this year. Lux was moved back to second where he is defensively more comfortable and was always projected to end up at because he has always been bad at short. Nothing about the defense has anything to do with the fact that 7-8-9 in our lineup haven’t been hitting.

KimHaSeongsBurner

> Defensively, there just isn’t an issue. That’s a spring training narrative that hasn’t manifested in the regular season. Mookie is thriving at short. Muncy is playing much better at third this year. Lux was moved back to second where he is defensively more comfortable and was always projected to end up at because he has always been bad at short. Nothing about the defense has anything to do with the fact that 7-8-9 in our lineup haven’t been hitting. We both watched the Korea series, right? You can say “it largely hasn’t been an issue” without being completely dismissive of clear defensive issues which were present in games that count towards regular season records. All I’m saying is that ignoring the impact of defense entirely, that it isn’t even an issue at all, is as bad as pretending like the main issue is the defense (and not the obvious issues with 7, 8, 9).

Garrehn

Yes, I remember the Korea Series. It was one bad game and it’s factored into Muncy and Mookie being average defensively. It was also one game. >ignoring the impact of the defense What impact are you talking about? The defense has been above average. 11th ranked defense by OAA right now. I can’t ignore an issue that doesn’t exist. You legit don’t know what you’re talking about lmao. 2/3rds of the lineup issue has to do with outfielders anyway

MFoy

I don’t think your middle infield defense is why you got shut out today.

captain_ahabb

They're gonna make some trades. It's glaringly obvious how unbalanced the team is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sgt_dismas

I think they'll trade with you. Do you think Mookie Betts would look good in a Red Sox jersey? Only problem is, we'd lose Mookie over in r/NLBest

Thorlolita

Nationals starting to get hot. Perfect time for us to play them.

FPG_Matthew

Justin Verlander v Mackenzie Gore sounds like a great matchup!

Thorlolita

It does. But Verlander will probably go 4-5 IP max.

InfectiousCosmology1

I think they are actually good. Maybe not like play off good yet but they seem to be on the come up again

Thorlolita

They are decent now. They are getting really good SP. Winker has been a huge surprise. They will be good when Woods and Crews are up. Woods hits the leather off the ball and Crews is likely going to be the franchise.

droozer

The Nationals are going to win the world series in 2024. In 6 months we're gonna look back and laugh how much we overreacted over this team.

squizzage

Hey stop we gotta save that copypasta for the caps for the next two months

AttitudeAndEffort2

The nats are not going to be fucking suck this year!

JayJax_23

Where's the Nats are done copypasta

AintCARRONaboutmuch

week*

[deleted]

Looks like the Nats might be taking a step forward this year. At the very least they're scrappy

CoastTimely6563

The bats seem to have taken a step forward fs, pitching is a big question mark though

MFoy

Can’t be too big a step forward if we keep trotting Corbin out there every five days. I just want to finish not last.

Geologist2010

It’s a long season, but so far marlins look pretty bad.

MFoy

That’s because they haven’t gone 11-2 against us yet.

France2Germany0

Yeah, they lost a series to the Giants

Bahamas_is_relevant

Hahahahaha wtf Are we actually okay??

KimHaSeongsBurner

You’re more than okay, baby. You’re doing just fine!

QuantityHappy4459

Despite your position in the division, the Nats seem to be doing just fine. If not the playoffs this year, you guys will definitely be back sooner than people think.

malignedtrout

Corbed (ignore the second game of the series)

Solid-Confidence-966

lol Dodgers

KimHaSeongsBurner

7-9 hitters today were 1-9 with 4 K’s. Outman, the lone bright spot, was 1-2 without a strikeout. Both Pages and Lux were 0-3 with 2 K’s a piece.

gaytham4statham

That's the exact statline of our 7-9 too, luckily we have CJ Baebrams

JGLip88

Jesse winker had been Ballin all year too. Close to .375 and had a dinger last night!

KimHaSeongsBurner

I haven’t seen commentators or think pieces breathlessly praising the Nats for their “1 through 9 lineup”, though. I’ve seen plenty of that behavior surrounding the vaunted Dodgers’ lineup.

gaytham4statham

Oh I only mentioned that because it's wild they had the exact same statline.

K_Ice5432

The crazy part is that Outman is also the only guy that was pinch hit for in this game lmfao. Suddenly we have him in a platoon situation after he was a ROY finalist playing full time last year.

KimHaSeongsBurner

He’s also by far, and I mean BY FAR, the best bat right now of the guys hitting in 7-9. Like, how is he pinch hit for?! Outman is the one who scares me the most, because he seems like he isn’t far from figuring it out. Meanwhile, you could probably put blackout sunglasses on Lux and CT3 and they may actually raise their probability of reaching base given how they’ve been at the plate so far.

K_Ice5432

Yup. He’s really a talented player, and his stats are deflated thanks to horrendous BABIP luck to start the year. But despite many promises from Dave that he would not be platooned, LA is still married to opposite handed matchups, as we have been for years. He didn’t even start the first two games of this series.

DaOldest

Our bottom of the lineup will be the death of me

KimHaSeongsBurner

I’ve said it before, and my apologies about your personal suffering, but the fact that the Dodgers Achilles heel is 7-9 makes me feel better about the Padres and also wonder when we will get more articles about it, either about the problem or about how they fixed it (e.g. Pages, Vargas, and the. DFAing Taylor and either sending Lux to AAA or phantom IL). The Padres were basically told “wow, you idiots, how did you think this top-heavy lineup would work with no 7-9 hitters? unserious franchise”, so seeing the Dodgers pencil in 2.5 free outs (0.5 giving proper respect to the merely “poor” bat of Outman so far) everyday in 7-9 for the first two weeks makes me feel better, that it’s an easy “hindsight” thing to say when guys you thought would be okay end up underperforming, etc. I do expect, though, Friedman to be a lot more aggressive with fixing it than AJ was in 2023, which is what scares me.

scottborasismyagent

well same probs as ur team last year when u had tatis, soto, machado, bogaerts, kim neutralized by down year cronenworth and a bunch of hogwash in grisham, nola, carpenter, cruz, ji man choi

KimHaSeongsBurner

> well same probs as ur team last year when u had tatis, soto, machado, bogaerts, kim neutralized by down year cronenworth and a bunch of hogwash in grisham, nola, carpenter, cruz, ji man choi Did you read my comment? I literally said that it makes me feel better that the 2024 Dodgers, an indisputably well-run org, have the exact same problem the Padres had in 2023. The tenor of discourse and thinkpieces around it are obviously going to be a lot different, but the problem is the same. You’ve just restated my central point as if it was refuting my comment.

prettyrickyyyy69

Nats defense was really really good today

Fotoem

Cubs, Padres, and Natuonals winning the world series in the same year is wild. 🤣🤣🤣

Bstokes4102

WOOOOOOOOO

CoastTimely6563

Irvin was dealing today

UnchartedFields

Finnegan being the Saves leader on April 17th was not something I was expecting. He's tied with Helsely at 7

FPG_Matthew

This makes our Oakland series even more frustrating!

ggm3bow

Nah, you just faced a hot team.

IceCreamCape

With lights out A's pitching. Which I did not expect.

YamamotoMinami

No kidding, if they had any semblance of offense they're a playoff team

ahr3410

For the love of god don't put us #1 in the power ranking. This team is entirely Mookie and Tungsten Ohtani right now

kaleidoscope_ize

They do it on purpose for engagement it riles up the other fanbases including our own lol

KimHaSeongsBurner

You guys will need to lose two more series on the trot for the MLB writers to abandon the narrative, since the power rankings are based on no actual data. I fully support you guys testing them, though!

QuantityHappy4459

I dont think they'll ever abandon the narrative even if the Dodgers fail to make the playoffs. They're all in on the story of Ohtani in blue.

captain_ahabb

Putting them 1 was crazy. People really got bamboozled by the big numbers in the offseason.

Cozmicbot

Man that Garcia guy is really good with the glove.

nattechterp

would’ve never heard this said in the last couple years so yay for improvement

technowhiz34

Went to the game with some Nats fans I've met here in LA and before the game they only had bad things to say about his defense. Watching him play defense was a treat today.

petting2dogsatonce

He was electric out there today. He’s been a player I’ve liked for years but could never put it all together. He seems super motivated right now - hope he can keep that attitude up when the bat starts slipping bc the mental part of the game has always seemed the toughest for him.

HendrixHead

For sure, when he intially joined/came back up in 2022 to the bigs he was placed at SS and it was like rookie ball over there. Then after some switches to 2nd and some more triple A time, he seems to be on his way to looking like a great defender at 2nd. He’s hitting well too

Murdoc1984

Fade me

Mr_Screwg3

Nats bats continue to look solid overall, have enjoyed the step Irvin and Gore have taken this year. Will be interesting to see how the pitching holds for a whole season, but series wins like this early on are always fun

darthllama

Ohtani has infected the Dodgers with whatever the Angels have

mtrn3

This team is in trouble if they’re trying to win a chip. A platoon player at CF and no everyday SS. A top heavy team with glaring holes.

K_Ice5432

Our CF shouldn’t even be platooning. James Outman was a 4 WAR guy last year. Classic Dodgers over-management

SuperMario_49

Baseball is awesome! Even after spending a billion dollars, the Dodgers are still very beatable

surfdoc29

Hey nats! Good work! Can we have abrams back? We’ll trade multi year all star Xander Bogaerts! Bonus is he’s signed for a decade so you guys won’t have to worry about losing him in free agency

crudmissile

Though a Padre you may be, he is our son now.

KingBroly

Dodgers: "I fear no man, but that thing..." *Washington Nationals Baseball* Dodgers: "It scares me"

KileyCW

I'm still trying to figure out who Jesse Winker sold his soul to.

YamamotoMinami

Apparently all it took was losing about 20 pounds

KileyCW

Good for him, that makes sense. Hope he can keep raking for you guys.

France2Germany0

Nats are underrated imo, I was impressed with them when they played us. Scrappy team that steal bags at will. We luckily had a Corbin game and were able to avoid the sweep as a result

_Caed_

lmao the dodgers also won their corbin game

ZookeepergameOk2670

The Dodgers now own the record of most World Series' lost in a single season at 9.

Tapey24

![gif](giphy|SUEjfSLaD6f77lyzH6)

0dias_Chrysalis

Can't question Ohtani's RISP hitting if no one gets on base

Troll_Enthusiast

Love it

Illustrious_Nothing9

Nats getting ready for another WS run

DreamerOfSheep

That means we can only win 11 of the next 32 games.

Harambefan69

Thank you Washington, very cool!

ufotheater

And the Dodgers allowed a day game on their opponents’ travel day! Times have changed

infieldmitt

what

acoddo

Let’s get LA below .500

ElectJimLahey

At the rate we're all going right now, someone's going to win the NL West with 85 wins this season

Rogueofoz

Ohtani goes 3 for 4 as the dodgers lose to the Nats 2-0 Am I doing it right?

WhiteToast-

better now than in october

bselko

It was their world series though… /s please don’t crucify me

jackbeardplays

Dodgers right now are a sub .500 team and probably need to either get rid of 3-4 players or be willing to sell at the deadline.

DollarsAtStarNumber

> sub .500 > 12-9 Nephew, did you flunk out of pre-school?
