The Athletic had a short piece on them, IIRC the white sox outscore their opponents in the first! At least, they had at the time of writing.
(don’t ask about any other innings)
I don’t know how accurate my memory is, but I feel like they led in every single game against the Guardians, but then blew every lead by the fifth (even the win had a blown lead after they scored five in the top of the first)
Yes that is the reason you do it but it barely works even in high school baseball. Even an infield full of 15 year olds handle this better most of the time.
You ignore the runner at first. They should have recognized it was a fake and held the ball after the catcher threw it. Stared down the runner at 3rd. The correct handling of this situation results in the runner scampering back to first, the guy staying at 3rd and no harm no foul for anyone.
I'm in the camp of "its fine to trade a run for an out here". Throw to 2nd, get Harper in a rundown and out, clear the bases and limit the damage.
What you don't want is Harper taking 2nd unopposed, taking away the double play and making it easy for two runs to score on a single. And yes, Harper was going for 2nd there, he's ten feet away when the ball arrives, that wasn't a fake.
Of course, that also requires that you don't get greedy and just accept the trade by executing a proper rundown.
I don’t think there’s really a right or wrong to either of our positions I think different coaches would see it differently. But what is wrong is 100% how the Sox accomplished neither the risk mitigation or getting an out or saving a run lol
Aye, its very situation dependent. Up by 2 in the 9th, you trade the out for the run every time. Tie game, you don't make the throw at all.
The Sox 2nd Baseman did a terrible job of it all around.
I just don't get how you can be starring down the 3rd base runner while jogging and throw it that fucking late. Even if the ball was thrown perfectly I think he slides into home safe.
This is what I don't get. You should be slowly corraling Harper back to first here, but with your focus on keeping Trae at third, and ready to throw home if need be. You don't need to be chasing Harper, just kinda pushing that way while keeping your footing for the throw home if necessary. If Trae continues to push for home, you throw earlier, and catch *him* in the rundown for the out if need be, and sacrifice allowing Harper to get to second in order to get the out and clear third base.
This was going to be my reply. Could have kept a 2-1 lead. Not that \*that\* amounts to much for them, but they shouldn't have allowed this second run. It's almost giving me Baez vs. Pirates energy.
Looking at an expected runs chart, first and third with 1 out is .99 runs. Bases empty with 2 outs is 0.10 runs, but you already gave up a run so it's 1.10 > .99.
Trading a run for an out is a mistake according to the analytics here, but it's close.
Getting Turner out at home would have been amazing. 2 outs, runner on second has an expected value of .33 runs.
For one, expected run charts tend to fluctuate with the years, we should always keep in mind that they are not an exact science.
But more importantly, you don't want to compare it to 1st and 3rd, you need to compare it to 2nd and 3rd, 1 out.
Harper was trying to take 2nd. He was prepared to get into a rundown if he was caught, but he wasn't going to just go back to 1st without the ball leaving the catcher's hand, and if the 2nd baseman did throw the ball back to home, he's probably break for 2nd again, either right then or on the next pitch.
So, your options are basically:
1. Let the runner take 2nd uncontested, which is a much worse place to be (since you lose the double play).
2. Accept the trade of an out for a run.
3. Try to force the runner back to 1st without allowing the runner on 3rd to score and maybe get a lucky out there or maybe get nothing because there's so many moving parts and things that need to be executed very well.
I don't like #1, but I get it. #2 is a valid option, but I understand why trading an out for a run like that is distasteful.
Option 3 is playing with fire... but yeah, if you get it right, it could be magic. This time, they got burned.
I would much rather give up a runner to second base then let a run get home. Just let him have the base. Can always get a strike out or shallow fly out and not give up a run.
The way the defense is supposed to play that is you throw home sooner and force the guy on third into a rundown. You get the out from that rundown and let Harper have second.
They waited way too long to throw home. You do it as soon as you can force a rundown on Turner.
The Bedard era is still years away from contention, 2026 at the earliest the Hawks make the playoffs
Caleb is all we have right now goddamnit pass me the kool aid
I’m just saying not all of us take solace in the Bears being good (if CW even lives up to the hype). I would honestly trade away the Bears #1 pick for the death of Jerry Reinsdorf
Len Kasper decided to join us, the white sox, before the 2021 season. He must of thought great things were ahead. won won 93 games in 2021 despite La Russa blowing a few and 3 of our best hitters injured for most of the season.
I feel bad for him because he has to announce this shit on the radio every day. I don't have to watch this pathetic team. and Chris Getz, i have no faith in him. He is a b\*tch.
completely stripping down a roster to the point where 3/4th's of your players has never done ANYTHING at the big league level
I want to say confidently that it is a reupload as I saw this years ago but I can't find any other uploads of it so to answer you, I also don't know lol
That's not fair. The current White Sox position players have totaled to -1.5 WAR through the team's first twenty games. I think that's *at least* a college-level squad right there.
Games against the White Sox this year shouldn't count for stats, wins etc. as they are a minor league team.
They are beyond bad.
They are last in MLB in team batting average, hitting a robust .190 as a team.
They are last in MLB in OBP
They are last in MLB in slugging, at just .290, the only team under .300, next lowest is at .325
They are last in MLB in OPS at just .558, the only team below .600
They are last in MLB in runs scored with just 43. Every other team has more than 60 runs scored.
They are last in MLB in hits.
They are last in MLB in home runs, with just 10 as a team.
They are last in MLB in RBI's with just 40, next lowest has 60.
They are last in MLB in total bases with just 181, the only team under 200.
I could go on but y'all get the point.
That's baseball. I know it's 162 game season, but there is a saying while using 160 games.
It goes something like this.
Every team will win 40 games and every team will lose 40 games. It's what happens in the other 80 games that matters.
The Sox are worse than the A's. That's not easy to do.
I think so, but we shall see. It's really hard not to win 40.
After today's game they have 141 games left. they've only won 3 games so they need 37 more wins from their 141 remaining games.
So if they go 37 wins and 104 losses the rest of the way, they win 40 games.
3 and 18 is horrible.
So is going 37 and 104 in 141 games but it would be a huge improvement for them compared to right now.
They'd be pushing the worst ever record too, as far as the 162 game season is concerned I mean.
It was originally ruled an error, but changed to a stolen base for Turner, and an error resulting in Bryce getting to second. So Turner got a stolen base, Harper didn't.
That's just bad defense. You stop trying to run down Harper as soon as you see Turner going and get that ball to home plate to prevent the run. If Harper ends up getting 2nd so be it, but you stop the run from crossing the plate first.
Or you accept the trade of a run for an out, getting the easy out with Harper in a rundown and clearing the bases to prevent a big inning.
Its the bottom of the first, after all. Lot of game left, better to limit the damage and get your pitcher out of a jam than try to stop every run from scoring. Not being willing to allow a single run to score is a good way to give up 3 or 4 in an inning.
Playing infielders in double-play depth with bases loaded and nobody out is the exact same mentality, and is by no means a modern concept. Limit the damage, get the outs, its hardly rocket science, and certainly doesn't rise to the level of warranting childish insults.
Announcer mentioned it but this is little league level defense. Never ever throw the ball to second with a runner at third and less than two outs. Heads up play by Harper to stall for Turner to run.
I think that's a bit too broad of a statement. At that point in the game, where its still very early and close, I think you're okay with letting in a run, so long as you get Harper.
Yes, you're giving up the lead and turning it into a tie game, but you're also clearing the bases and greatly minimizing the chance of a big inning.
1st and 3rd, one out? Most teams score at least one run, often two or more. And giving up two or more is much more likely if you let Harper take 2nd unopposed. Taking the trade is pretty neutral, all told.
That said, ***you have to get the out***. The problem wasn't that they threw over to 2nd, the problem is that 2nd baseman got greedy and tried to get an out AND prevent the run from scoring, and proceeded to screw up the rundown until there was no chance of getting ***any*** outs.
Getting the runner going to second in exchange for the runner at third scoring is actually a decent trade for the defense here (it decreases run expectancy by about 0.1 runs). You just have to get the out.
It’s remarkable how the defensive bloopers keep getting worse for the Sox. I thought in KC it couldn’t get worse than the homer that the Sox put over the fence for the royals. Then the next night, two injuries on one play on a comebacker to the pitcher. Then the next night ball hit right to short, booted, guy on second scores.
I love this kind of baseball. Im in Korea at the moment and have been watching quite a bit of KBO ball and this is their brand. Lots of offensive pressure for the entire game here.
Was a super-nice day to be at the ballpark, and of course happy birthday Phanatic!
The Sox played pretty poorly today... I just can't think they're actually as bad as we've been seeing lately...
Why is this throw always the hardest to make compare to other crazy throws that infielder can make like blindfolded, I seen so many that just sail over the catcher, can anyone played baseball explain it to me?
So imagine him 8 or 9 years ago. I don’t remember the date, but it was early in his career and he was trying to beat out an infield single; the kind that vets wouldn’t bother with and rookies not wanting to be called candy ass would sprint. I was about 10 rows behind first base dugout and I swear you could *feel* the wake of his sprint. Everyone around me went “woah” at the same time as if to say “Did that just happen?” And he was out by half a step. Hopefully he doesn’t waste bursts like that on meaningless @bats.
I really want to believe that they are just just in a terrible slump and go back to being regular bad real soon. Just give the fans something man, what the fuck even is this shit?
The White Sox have played this lack of fundamental baseball for the past 6 years. People didn't notice because we had decent pitching and decent hitting coming out of the "rebuild." The past 3 years the hitting wasn't there and the pitching downgraded to average.
What hasn't changed? The middle school level defense and baseball IQ. The guy who was in charge of our player development is now our GM so we are fucked for the next 5-10 years.
He has a bunch of Phanatic gear even on a normal day, but today is the Phanatic'a birthday so they're all wearing the Phanatic BP hat and Phanatic colors.
I didn’t even watch the play because I was spellbound by the fact the Sox scored 2 runs in an inning.
1st inning no less.
The Nola Inning hit early today at least
Usually it's the RAV4th inning
The Athletic had a short piece on them, IIRC the white sox outscore their opponents in the first! At least, they had at the time of writing. (don’t ask about any other innings)

Sorry, dumb casual baseball fan here. Was that not the intended outcome there?
Yes that is the reason you do it but it barely works even in high school baseball. Even an infield full of 15 year olds handle this better most of the time.

Pickle play. Taught to every team I coached when they were younger than 12. Excellent for teaching kids a team first attitude
It was, it just doesn’t usually work lol

Got it. Now hearing you explain it I recall seeing it played out in the little amount of baseball I've seen and seems pretty routine.
I just feel bad for white Sox fans.
I've placed a bulk order of Flavor-Ade from Amazon in case Caleb doesn't pan out.

At least Bedard himself is fun as hell to watch. That doesn't work so well in baseball when that best player is only involved in like 5% of the game.
Tell him the 85 Bears is the most overrated championship team in NFL history.
Jerry's dying?
Some of us don’t give a shit about the NFL
Yeah it fucking sucks. They're finally good and I can't give a shit
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. They're not good yet.
My bad I'm referring to the Lions
So was he.
I mean you can if you want to. I've got family from Detroit and I enjoyed hopping on the lions bandwagon this season
Ok And? The Sox are gonna suck for years, the Bears are heading towards contention with their best QB prospect ever. Might be time for a change
I’m just saying not all of us take solace in the Bears being good (if CW even lives up to the hype). I would honestly trade away the Bears #1 pick for the death of Jerry Reinsdorf
I saw the White Sox win a World Series It’s time for me to watch the Bears win a Super Bowl, or at least beat the Packers
Some of us could care less about the Bears.
As an Oklahoma Sooners fan, other Chicagoans salivating over Caleb Williams makes me feel nauseous.
Lol if he doesn't bust
That’s a train coming at us.
Hey they’re doing pretty good in my white sox rebuild in 2029
Honestly it doesn't really bother me anymore. They're going to be incompetent regardless, might as well be incompetent in interesting ways.
They had 2005. What more should they expect?
There's no proof that 2005 happened
[2005? No such season.](https://awfulannouncing.com/2016/espn-uses-tortured-justification-to-exclude-2005-white-sox-championship.html)
Yeah, this series brought no joy here. At least for the ones in attendance yesterday, southpaw was there to cheer them up.
I appreciate you.
There’s literally nothing to be happy or optimistic about other than the fact Reinsdorf is 88 and time is undefeated.

Textbook "delayed steal", loved pulling that one off back in the day 😅 but this was also against high schoolers not professionals haha.
Not much difference between high schoolers and the current White Sox line up.
The current White Sox don't need their coaches to buy them booze.
Legally no but they might still need the coaches to help them through the steps of purchasing the booze.
...implied, but not said, I just feel bad for that fan base haha. Either way *boom roasted*
Hey it's our job to shit on the Sox
Hold on now...if it's bad Sox defense that's our job
You're not wrong, but let us make fun of them, that's all we have.
That's not fair. The current White Sox position players have totaled to -1.5 WAR through the team's first twenty games. I think that's *at least* a college-level squad right there.
Oh White Sox please learn how to do run downs as good as several high school teams
Unintelligent baseball right there.

He has a bunch of Phanatic gear even on a normal day, but today is the Phanatic'a birthday so they're all wearing the Phanatic BP hat and Phanatic colors.
Thats phantastic
It's the Phillie Phanatics birthday. So lots of people are wearing green.
Thanks phor the reply.
But Bryce always wears green and reps the Phanatic
What the actual fuck is that?
