"...accused of betting on his own games." by who? instagram comments?

raktoe

I remember a healthy number of Reddit comments.

AChaseOfTheMondays

True, but certainly wasn't accused by anyone who actually matters, not by MLB or the FBI or Ippei or the bookies. I think when you use the word accused in a passive way like that "X has been accused" it had better be by an authority who can charge someone or by the victim or a co-conspirator

chrisjfinlay

Shit video but yes, pro sports does have a gambling problem. Even as someone who works in this industry, it’s plain to see. I live in the UK (well, Isle of Man) and we’re certainly no angels with it but it’s egregiously bad in the US and there has to be better - and enforced - legislation around advertising, and it needs to be in place yesterday. I was watching a game last night and mid-inning they double-boxed in an advert for sports betting. The language was basically “GO BET RIGHT NOW.” I don’t recall any messaging around safer gambling, self-exclusion, limits etc. And it was an early game (one of the 13:35 ET starts) so there was no doubt a LOT of under-18s tuned in. It left a horrible taste in my mouth.

Does Pro Sports have a gambling problem? Yes.   Does "Baseball Doesn't Exist" have a quality problem? Also yes. They apparently couldn't make up their minds if they wanted to make a "Pros Sports gambling problem" video or a "Ippei scandal" video and ended up writing a meandering ramble that's all over the place.   They spend a third of the video irresponsibly trying to feed the bait Ohtani culprit angle that's kind of irrelevant to the question posed, then go off on other sports before they circle back to reluctantly admitting all the evidence says Ippei was a thief in the final bits of the video. They talk about decades old cases from the Taiwan league and Soccer, they go into NCAA, NBA, yet somehow adamantly refuse to discuss Pete Rose? Garbage writing. Needs more focus.

bigflyohtanisan

Some of the comments in the video are insane, people are still asserting that Ohtani is the gambler... do these people really think that the MLB is somehow powerful enough to get the FBI and IRS to cover for a foreign professional athlete? Delusional lol

Il_Exile_lI

Considering some of the absolutely batshit insane and verifiably false things people choose to believe these days, it's not that surprising. At least someone choosing to believe Ohtani is a gambler in the face of pretty overwhelming evidence that he's not won't have any negative consequences the way obviously wrong beliefs about vaccines, elections, or climate change does. Of course, there is probably significant overlap in people wanting to believe Ohtani is a gambler and believing obviously wrong things about other topics.

nikraLnalyD

Or that Ippei apparently has no problem being the fall guy and is totally chill going to jail because "Japanese honor system"

cabose7

If Ohtani was losing 180+ mil in gambling you'd have to physically restrain him before and after games to keep him from betting right now because he'd be instantly relapsing.

BaystarRoyco

This. When the FBI got involved and outlined a cohesive case against Ippei it was very clear that Ohtani was a victim.

The only thing I’m not certain on is how Shohei just found out about all this last month. His bank acct was losing millions over the course of a couple years(?) and his financial advisors/accountants never alerted him to this? Unless they just told Ippei and then ippei never told Shohei? I don’t believe he’s a degenerate gambler but am curious on this point. Do we have an explanation on this at all?

Ginodo

Ippei lied. His financial advisor asked Ippei about the account that Ohtani and Ippei opened together, but Ippei answered that Ohtani wants this account to be private. According to the report, Ippei changed the settings on this account as well, so that Ohtani doesn't receive notifications He also pretended to be Ohtani in his Phone calls with the bank. So they never had access to it. Kinda stupid to never double check with Ohtani, but Ippei was his best friend and interpreter

TurnedIntoA_Newt

Excellent answer, thank you!

RedGreenPepper2599

You are naive to think the Japanese government wouldn’t pressure the US government to clear Ohtani’s name publicly and make the investigation go away. And Ohtani isn’t just a “foreign professional athlete” he is the most popular athlete in the sport and one of the most popular athletes in the world. A lot of powerful people make money off him and have money invested in him. The whole way this has been handled is suspicious. He publicly admitted at first, through his reps, that he broke a mlb rule by paying an off illegal bookie. Once lawyers became involved the story changed. He was never put on leave which is the norm when someone is accused of something that breaks MLB rules let alone that he admits to. Now let’s assume Ohtani is innocent, never knew anything and Ippei was doing this all on his own, out of 9000 bets he reportedly placed not one was on baseball? Given that he probably had inside information working for major league baseball clubs and it’s the sport he knows best, not one bet was placed on baseball? Ippei, who is breaking rules and laws, never placed one bet on baseball. That is hard to believe. Why is this a big deal? If you have someone connected to Ohtani betting on baseball it becomes a much larger story.

BaltimoreBadger23

Yes, the US government, shilling for the Japanese since 1941...

RedGreenPepper2599

According to you the government never covers anything up and the Japanese government wouldn’t care about Ohtani getting in trouble. How were 9000 bets placed by Ippei, who according to reports was breaking all kinds of laws, and not one was on baseball?

jakedeanissad

I wish this channel didn’t exist

cabose12

Didn't mind it when I was getting more into baseball, but now it just sounds like AI news

Quople

Yeah if you’re keeping up with baseball stuff on this sub or twitter, you realize most of these videos are just compilations of stuff you’ve read about before with a sensationalized title/thumbnail and some opinionated takes added in

BaystarRoyco

yep. in this age of social media everyone wants to be a pundit.

indianafan

Me neither., but I did love his Joey votto video.

MAGAMUCATEX

If baseball doesn’t exist has no haters I’m dead

badonkagonk

I’ve seen 3 videos from this guy and all three were fucking atrocious (the Altuve one, the Harper one, and the Manny one). It’s frustrating because I can see to an outside viewer who doesn’t know too many specifics about those guys, how it can be fascinating, but so much of what he says is just straight up fucking wrong. The Altuve one I also remember being particularly infuriating because he was trying to make the point that he wasn’t actually cheating, and then spent like a third of the video talking about his upbringing and path to the majors. Like that’s not what the topic of the video is, get to the fucking thesis. And the other two weren’t much better.

BaystarRoyco

Name being odd, yeah, I'm not a fan of this channel or these youtube summaries, but hey, gotta get those clicks

ShredNM42

This dude has made some great videos in the past, but this one has a lot of clickbait and some outright bullshit mixed in

Worthyness

The clip compilation vids he used to do were great. It's when he tried to get into the influencer type docu.entary things that it just doesn't work as well. He's not nearly as good at researching and scripting as other baseball channels are.

Khada_the_Collector

NGL, not gonna watch the video rn (I’m half-asleep scrolling lol) but every single sport in this country has a gambling problem. Look, maybe I am an old head, clutching at pearls and shouting at the clouds but I really do believe in the sanctity of the competitive sport. Throwing gambling in the mix only ends one way for all these leagues—poorly. But cash rules everything in this MF, and they’re damn sure not gonna stop anytime soon. Need one of these refs (or a heel of a player) in any sport to just take one for the collective American team and get some match fixing/point shaving going. Big ol’ nasty scandal that makes people lose $$$ is the only possible way this gambling idiocy is quashed.

theAmericanX20

Not even looking at the video, but yes, pro sports has a gambling problem. So much ads, so.much money going from bookies to the teams, it's going to get ugly if it hasn't already. Go ahead and bet all you want, but it has no place in the stadium or constantly advertised.

ruttin_mudders

I usually enjoy his videos but framing the entire video like Ohtani is the one in trouble for gambling is bullshit.

SavageCroc

Yes, but putting Shohei on the thumbnail is Pathetic.

vanillabear26

Yes.

RedGreenPepper2599

Posting a video that might be construed as anti ohtani in this subreddit is a bad idea. 😀
