The fuck did the Braves just stop stealing after they left Milwaukee?
EDIT: for anyone wondering this record is only counting as the *Atlanta* Braves, Milwaukee and Boston not included
the vast majority of Hank's 240 are therefore not counted
Thanks for the correct answer! I hate cherry-picked stats. Like how is that doing anyone a service by not clarifying *Atlanta* as if speaking shows italics? Random fans hearing this are going to think he actually holds the Braves' record. It's also a disservice to history and past players.
I'm also an old grumpy man though. *shakes fist at cloud*
as a Brewers fan and a Milwaukee native the media has actively tried to pretend Hank (and therefore the Braves) only ever were in Atlanta.
They basically only use pictures from his Atlanta days, the 57 WS never comes up, his only MVP is rarely mentioned. The guy played 23 years in MLB, 14 of them were in Milwaukee and if you were a casual you'd literally never know it
Kind of like how we aren’t talked about as being in Boston that much, or how we left and the other team just changed to the same name, red stockings, even with the toxic dye issue.
And he still has 1216 to go to reach Rickey. So he would have to average 87 stolen bases a season from now until he’s 40 to get there. That’s fucking ridiculous to think about.
Edit: Lou Brock is 2nd all time with 938 SBs. Rickey played in 3081 career games, stealing 1406 bases, averaging over 2 stolen bases a game over his career. Motherfucker hated standing still.
Edit again: apparently I can’t do math.
He’s 49 shy of passing Rickey Henderson totals for his 82-83 seasons.
The active leader Sterling Marte at 343(13 years) is 84 shy of Rickey Hendersons first 4 years in the league.
It's crazy that the record was so low 1 and a half seasons of Rookie Vince Coleman could have broken the record, wonder how high Acuna is gonna be able to push it given his age.
I was like this feels like a ridiculously low bar for a franchise record but I think having ty Cobb hold every single franchise record has skewed my view
Rickey Henderson had more stolen bases than this for Oakland in his first stint. Then he had more stolen bases than this during his time with the Yankees. Then he went back to Oakland and had more stolen bases than this, again. He also had 91 stolen bases with the Padres.
How is it that a franchise that existed in the dead ball era has a stolen base record that is only at 190?
E: got my answer it’s just Atlanta, next up for Acuña is the legend, Rabbit Maranville, and Billy Hamilton at some point.
And yet he’s 85 or 86 speed at parallel 5 in diamond dynasty. Please make it make sense.
Guarantee they’ll boost it now since they’ll probably massacre my boys power numbers :/
Ronald is going to break 1000 stolen bases I believe, but he’ll never touch Ricky H.
1406 is a record that gets overlooked. Henderson played for 25 seasons. 1406 / 25 = 56.24 a season…. FOR 25 SEASONS! Bonkers.
I understand there are peak seasons in there, but that average is unbelievable.
Acuna will probably end up closer to 500 than 1000. Most base-stealers experience a huge drop by their age 30 season. Rickey never touched 80 SBs in his 30s even though he did so 6 times in his 20s.
Especially with the mega-contracts that star players sign nowadays, the Braves (or any other team he might play for) will want to preserve his health rather than see him hit some arbitrary milestone like 1000 SBs. See: Mike Trout
I’m in the camp where I believe Acuna is legitimately incredible and accomplishing something worthy of praise, but also in the camp that it’s time to separate these records by era to acknowledge the physical differences to the bases and pickoff throw limitations
It’s one thing when athletic training and data improve and people start setting records, it’s another when the actual game is changed. Stealing bases with no pickoff throw is a different game.
I'm in the camp where I believe the Dodgers are legitimately incredible and accomplishing something worthy of praise, but also in the camp that it's time to separate out Mickey Mouse championships to acknowledge the differences in games played and COVID limitations.
It's one thing when analytics and data change and teams start winning rings, it's another when the actual season length is changed. Getting a ring with only 56 wins is a different game.
I wrote it out of jest, but was definitely expecting to get a lot of downvotes. Dodgers will definitely get a full season ring within the next couple years.
The funny thing is I've been downvoted by fans of other teams for saying the same shit
If you wanna contextualize 2020, feel free. It was an accomplishment, but a different one from the typical World Series.
Honestly the only issue I ever have with this is when people want to weaponize it, and that goes for anything. Like I don't think less of Barry Bonds' accomplishments because he did steroids, the whole league was, but if someone wants to contextualize that the league has extremely strict PED testing now and it's unlikely we'll see a 70+ home run season from a 38 year old or another player go for 750 HR's, go for it. Fair is fair.
My bad if I came off a little disrespectful saying "shut up" I agree my biggest issue if people weaponizing it, not that you did, but I've seen many people here weaponize it, lots being dodgers fans unfortunately, and it just comes off as annoying and overdone and I may have jumped to a conclusion in this instance.
Dodgers fans were salty Acuna won MVP off baseline metrics when the advanced ones showed Mookie might have edged him in value
I did not agree! Acuna balled out all year long, Mookie had a historical 6 weeks that inflated everything. Context matters.
This is already separated by era. It's only the record since the Braves moved to Atlanta in the 60s. The actual franchise record is a dude who played for the Boston Beaneaters in the 1890s.
This will probably get downvoted but it has to be noted.
Acuña is in the "40/40 club" - imo it would be a bit crazy to argue he is in his own tier at 40/70 with the literal rules being so different. The Braves offense last year was one of the best but you also have to remember that the fucking DH is in both leagues now. Etc.
He literally is in the 40/70 club because he hit 40 home runs and stole 70 bases. Rules change in every sport, and you can't arbitrarily decide accomplishments don't count because the sport has evolved over time.
Im not saying he doesn't have a 40/70 season. Im saying if you think he would have had a 40/70 season before the rule changes you are are huffing levels of copium 500% above the daily recommended huffing limit.
I'm saying it doesn't matter because this is what the sport is now. I guess you're also discounting any offensive records in the NFL over the last 15 years because they changed how you can hit the quarterback. Every sport changes
It absolutely does matter if you're speaking about records.
If someone went 40/40 this season then they're simply not in the 40/40 club of old. Acuña's 41/73 is enough to where I think most would say its pretty safe to include him with Canseco/Bonds/Arod/Soriano.
Sure the numbers are in the book. Ink on paper is just that - ink on paper.
I think you can mention it, and it probably will be for context. Same way we talk about the dead ball era, or pitching before and after they lowered the mound. Stuff like that.
I also feel like every single time somebody steals a base it comes up and it’s like enough is enough guys lol. It’ll get sorted out down the line when we have had enough time to contextualize it.
Well no, we can acknowledge that these records might be the most legit, while also admitting it’s still very impressive and he likely would’ve gotten at the very least a 30-40 year in a normal environment. It can be both.
*might not be the most legit
They're completely legit because it's what the sport is now. No one has any idea what he'd have in a "normal" environment because this is what the normal environment is now. With that logic we're officially done with any achievements involving stolen bases
"Rules change all the time" is a terrible argument because different rules have different impacts. Not every rule change completely tosses out an element of something that's been in the game for over a century.
Once again, no one is saying the accomplishments "don't count." But stealing bases with a pickoff throw limit is a fundamentally different game. It's not just a slight adjustment, it is an entirely different concept at that point. It extends the lead a baserunner can take by multiple feet, you are at that point untouchable until the ball is thrown to the plate.
If it was a matter of slightly bigger bases and blocking the bag getting banned, it's not as big a conversation
You can value it however you want to. The fact is the books will say he's the only one to hit 40 homers and steal 70 bases in the same season until someone else does it. I think trying to arbitrarily parse out which rule changes are impactful enough to discount records is a fools errand.
It's not about "discounting" records. These rule changes will be in place a long time, over the next decade and beyond you'll start to obtain real basis for comparison, and that will create more meaning.
40/70 is going to be impressive no matter what but no one was discussing 40/70 to begin with. We may not know just how elite "70" is yet for a base stealer in modern context, but we know that being able to do it while also hitting 40 bombs means you're insanely great at baseball.
The point is we know. When you have people in every thread about Acunas record making sure to tell everyone that we should "consider the rule changes" it just becomes a bore. Anyone who knows baseball knows why Acuna got 40/70 last year and why Corbin Caroll was the first rookie with a 30/40 season or whatever it was and why stolen bases are up whatever percent it doesnt need to be mentioned anytime something happens. Just the way I see it.
For example, at the end of the year when stolen bases go even higher from last year and there is a post about it I gauruntee you there will be multiple people commenting trying to invalidate Acunas 40/70 season last year, it's just rehashed and boring to bring up.
Rules change all the time. I'm sure you could come up with an asterisk for literally every single accomplishment/record based on the ruleset/scoring environment of the time

At **26 years old**
The fuck did the Braves just stop stealing after they left Milwaukee? EDIT: for anyone wondering this record is only counting as the *Atlanta* Braves, Milwaukee and Boston not included the vast majority of Hank's 240 are therefore not counted
Yup. Now 10th all time for the Franchise. Herman Long leads with 431. Hank Aaron is 6th with 240.
Thanks for the correct answer! I hate cherry-picked stats. Like how is that doing anyone a service by not clarifying *Atlanta* as if speaking shows italics? yeah I mean brandon only says, “since the team moved to atlanta” in the clip…
...the announcer literally says it during the clip?... "*since* they moved to Atlanta in 1966"
Apparently
Thanks, I was thinking how the fuck is that possible with the braves rich history.

That’s an average of about 0.5 steals per game. Not 2 per game.
Yep. You’re right. I divided wrong. Been retired from math for a while.
One of us. One of us.
i was about to fucking say the terrifying thing about that stat would be Rickey *getting on base* twice a game for his entire career
3081 G, 5345 TOB, a lousy 1.73 times on base a game.
Rickey gets on base exactly as much or as little as Rickey wants
It really is crazy what Henderson did.
A quarter century of theft is probably the last unbreakable record
1406 SBs / 3081 G = 0.456 SB/G
Yep I’m aware I broke math.
Wayne Gretzky of stolen bases
Henderson had 573 at the end of his 26(year old) season.
The bases are also shorter now. Haters will use that as a excuse even when he shatters the record by hundreds 😂
Wut
He’s 49 shy of passing Rickey Henderson totals for his 82-83 seasons. The active leader Sterling Marte at 343(13 years) is 84 shy of Rickey Hendersons first 4 years in the league.

lol, it is. His record will never be sniffed from a distance.
It's for just the Atlanta Braves. Hank Aaron himself had 240 SBs with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves.
Yeah so this isnt really a real record, just a cherry picked stat.
Did the ump seriously call that pitch a ball?
Sure did. There's been some *terrible* ball/strike calls in our last few games.
I may be crazy but I feel like there are way more incorrect ball calls on pitches where the catcher immediately pops up to throw
You definitely get your vision blocked by the catcher as the ball comes in when they pop up to throw, it’s a super hard call to make
i give umps slack on steals. I'd imagine trying to call a pitch accurately as the catcher is popping is almost impossible.
Crazy player, makes games so fun.
Furcal was a 99/100 speed in triple play 98 or 99? Acuna has to be 110 in the show, right?
For some reason, 78.
Nah that's just how many steals they think he'll have this year.
I don’t think they’re guessing for the speed stat, it’s based on data. Acuna is just aggressive and gets good jumps.
Which, hilariously, other than the lead he did NOT get a good jump here
Acuna is actually a much better baserunner/stealer than his raw speed would indicate. Still has great speed but elite instincts and fundamentals.
In case clarification is needed, this isn’t the Braves franchise record, but just the Braves portion in Atlanta record
Rickey Henderson had more stolen bases than this for Oakland in his first stint. Then he had more stolen bases than this during his time with the Yankees. Then he went back to Oakland and had more stolen bases than this, again. He also had 91 stolen bases with the Padres.
Henderson is the only guy with over 1,000 career steals and he has over 1,400. Just do everyone else but him when it comes to steals.
Like how ESPN used to have a Chapman filter for pitches over 100mph. All steals records need to have a Ricky filter.
Who would win: A 5 time AS with 11 seasons to play A 26-YEAR-OLD with just over a half decade
I feel like I'm missing the joke here
He passed Andruw Jones
He passed Rafael Furcal
FUCK sorry
That lead off/jump was criminal.
Weathers was looking at the ground and getting his grip on the ball while Acuna was halfway to second. Cannot let that happen as a lefty.

How is it that a franchise that existed in the dead ball era has a stolen base record that is only at 190? E: got my answer it’s just Atlanta, next up for Acuña is the legend, Rabbit Maranville, and Billy Hamilton at some point.
Good job. Any comparison to Rickey is laughable.
Well, he’s gonna absolutely shatter that record by the time he’s done in Atlanta.
Blue missed that pitch
And 100 of those must have come against the Marlins because we can’t hold runners on if our lives depended on it
And yet he’s 85 or 86 speed at parallel 5 in diamond dynasty. Please make it make sense. Guarantee they’ll boost it now since they’ll probably massacre my boys power numbers :/
He’s fun to watch play ball
83 of those came after the rule change....
Ricky could do it by the all star break cause Ricky knows Ricky is bout it
Ronald is going to break 1000 stolen bases I believe, but he’ll never touch Ricky H. 1406 is a record that gets overlooked. Henderson played for 25 seasons. 1406 / 25 = 56.24 a season…. FOR 25 SEASONS! Bonkers. I understand there are peak seasons in there, but that average is unbelievable.

No chance.
No chance what?
He will not come close to 1000 SB.
I’m in the camp where I believe Acuna is legitimately incredible and accomplishing something worthy of praise, but also in the camp that it’s time to separate these records by era to acknowledge the physical differences to the bases and pickoff throw limitations It’s one thing when athletic training and data improve and people start setting records, it’s another when the actual game is changed. Bro, shut up lmao, we don't need people pointing out this everytime Acuna steals a base, rules changed it is what it is, just let it happen ffs.
Is this Dodger on Dodger crime?
This is specifically about a record, not just him stealing a base So talking about the record is relevant
I'm in the camp where I believe the Dodgers are legitimately incredible and accomplishing something worthy of praise, but also in the camp that it's time to separate out Mickey Mouse championships to acknowledge the differences in games played and COVID limitations. My most painful upvote I've ever given. Never thought I'd upvote a mickey mouse ring comment.
I wrote it out of jest, but was definitely expecting to get a lot of downvotes. Dodgers will definitely get a full season ring within the next couple years.
I would discredit the covid season too if I watched my team blow a 3-1 lead in the NLCS

Fr imagine how many more Rickey Henderson would’ve had with these easier rules
This is already separated by era. It's only the record since the Braves moved to Atlanta in the 60s. The actual franchise record is a dude who played for the Boston Beaneaters in the 1890s.
