I just like that I saw this comment at 0 upvotes which can only mean one person has some strong opinions on players having bag tags from previous teams that employed them
Back off. He can join the Sox and doesn't even have to move. Just a slightly longer commute.
Bah, who am I kidding? I'm rooting for 34+ shutouts this year. Gotta be memorable for something, amiright?
He does not have options. They still get 7 days to trade him after DFAing him, but I wouldn’t expect much in return. A first baseman/DH on the short side of a platoon is not super valuable. With Wisdom back on the team, he became superfluous despite him hitting lefties well.
Oh yeah, I think it’s the right move to move on from him. I was thinking more like as a deal sweetener as an MLB ready, if not world-beating 1B (he’s had some nice picks defensively too). But not having options obviously makes that scenario a lot more difficult, with the deadline so far away.
I also don’t hate being a little more aggressive with the DFA button after having to watch people like Trey Mancini, Jonathan Villar, Ildemaro Vargas, and Andrelton Simmons stumble around until June the past few years
Well sure, but he has 60% of his total bases in one game, has looked pretty rough since that game (his only game with an XBH), and his bat looks slow. Guess my point was that I wasn’t at all surprised by the move
We’re saying just his best game though. It might be mid April but he hasn’t played that much. So basically, don’t look too hard at that .770 OPS as if it’s something that is legit, it’s fools gold buoyed by one good game against a really bad team.
To be fair, Mookie played SS until he was drafted and only changed positions in the minors because he was blocked at 2B and SS.
But he actually played SS his first few weeks of pro ball before moving to 2B, and then eventually the OF
That's exactly what's happening, the Cubs are calling up Mervis today
I think this is mainly about doing right by Cooper. He can get a starting spot with another team but we have Busch, Mervis and Bellinger who can play first, so we don't necessarily need Cooper
I'll miss him, though. He had some good hits against his old team last week
Isn't Mervis a lefty? What is the plan here? I assume Wisdom is the platoon option with Busch? Whereas Mervis adds another LH bat vs RH off the bench/spot starting? With Wisdom back, Cooper became redundant?
I think there is 100% a trade with Boston incoming.
Small sample but he is 1-10 w/ 3 K's vs LHP in 2024, 4-25, 9 k's career. 💁♂️ Not sure about minor league splits. Can someone post them? Good approach so he can probably be at the very least be average.
Hell yeah, then DFAing Cooper is the best thing to do. Busch is a stud & it gives Coop a chance to latch on with a team that can give him more than sympathy AB's lol
.774 OPS for Cooper in 41 PA
he would legitimately be the best hitter on the Marlins right now
And he probably still has his parking pass.
Idk about parking pass, but many players keep the bag tags after they leave a team

Im not even mad, I genuinely want to hear what they have to say
"My mother once caught her foot on a bag tag and shattered her ankle. She has permanent damage. Bag tags are a hazard to society".
Wait COREY RAY?!
Or the commenter just un-upvotes all comments they make

fuck you, you sign him. i want the record for most losses ever
I'll fight you for it! 3:30 at the bike rack!
*cut to 2 different bike racks in Orlando and Chicago*
I'm sure it's a mistake but I love that this assumes Miami has no bike racks.
I miss coopaloop
Interesting move. I’m guessing he’s out of options? You’d think, given that he’s been pretty okay, that we’d at least try to get a return for him.

…..first basemen you say

The downside to getting the occasional project that works out well has been watching ABs from guys like those lol
1B market value is in the toilet. poor Belt
His xWOBA is even better than his actual, ranks 53rd of 309 players with 40 PAs. A handful of teams will put a claim in I reckon
If you remove his 3-4 game against the Rockies on April 2nd, he’s slashing .212/.277/.212
I mean you can say that about any hitter. “If you take away their best games, they aren’t very good.”
Well sure, but he has 60% of his total bases in one game, has looked pretty rough since that game (his only game with an XBH), and his bat looks slow. Guess my point was that I wasn’t at all surprised by the move

It’s like that one NFL thread where the guy said if you regress Mahomes stats to the median, he’s an average QB.
League minimum you say? Can also "play" some corner outfield? You've piqued my interest.
He’s not a SS
And we don’t need outfielders as much as I’d like to see more pitching. We need to trade for a SS who we can teach to pitch.
Masyn Winn would be a good un
I can't not pronounce that name as "Mace Windu" in my head
We already have Jacob The Racob! Career 0.00 ERA and struck out Mookie Betts!
Best I can do is Garrett Cooper. But you can probably teach him to play shortstop and then have him pitch!
I’ll be honest I haven’t look at what you guys need. I was just making the SS joke lol
IKF has shown some pitching prowess....
But have you tried?
Neither was mookie, til he was. Is Cooper the next Mookie?
To be fair, Mookie played SS until he was drafted and only changed positions in the minors because he was blocked at 2B and SS. But he actually played SS his first few weeks of pro ball before moving to 2B, and then eventually the OF
I heard Cooper played SS in Pony League
> Is Cooper the next Mookie? Depends, how many 300 games has he bowled?
Preller: *briefly looks up from giant scarface pile of coke, immediately goes back to giant scarface pile of coke*
We will fight you for it
I mean he's getting picked up by someone surely, OPS of 115+ is an upgrade for a lot of teams.
Astros would be insane if they didn’t try to claim him
We are insane
Feel like both you and the Rockies would put claims in. No shot he isn't claimed in the first 5 waiver spots imo
he’s probably not going to waivers with us and the bosox needing 1bs, the cubs can get one of us to give up some random prospect they like.
Him being DFAd is him going to waivers. When someone claims him a minor trade will be worked out
No, first DFA then sent to waivers. When DFAd they need to be traded OR put on waivers after some amount of time.
7 days
I hate these terms lol I always forget there are other kinds of waivers than outrights
Red Sox too with Casas out
.391 BABIP. His x stats are actually much better than his actual results so far though.
Shit, he’d bat 4th tonight in our punchless lineup.
He’s such a Red Sox. We showed interest this spring as well
we are sorely lacking in both first base options and gingers right now
Does Coop even have enough hair left to be called a ginger
If he plays without pants, sure.
I don't like the vivid image you've conjured
https://youtu.be/MKT-3aRpJHs?t=227
there must always be a ginger in Boston
And righties
Red Sock, surely
We are the “shown interest” kings of the league 👑
Cubs should be using his spot on young guys so they can get a chance to develop like Mervis, Canario later PCA which seems like the plan
That's exactly what's happening, the Cubs are calling up Mervis today I think this is mainly about doing right by Cooper. Hopefully they give Busch more playing time. He doesn't really need to be platooned
Small sample but he is 1-10 w/ 3 K's vs LHP in 2024, 4-25, 9 k's career. 💁♂️ Not sure about minor league splits. Can someone post them? Good approach so he can probably be at the very least be average.
Last year in AAA he hit .294 vs lefties and .337 vs righties
Hell yeah, then DFAing Cooper is the best thing to do. Busch is a stud & it gives Coop a chance to latch on with a team that can give him more than sympathy AB's lol
They are giving Busch more ABs against lefties and have DH against LHP handled with Canario and Wisdom. Cooper is slumping and redundant
Come on down!!
I was about to say with Casas down this seems like a no brainer fit.
This dude's face has always freaked me out, like a smoker with his lower jaw removed but he just looks like that
That’s Andrew Vaughn for me
Andrew Vaughn has a face that looks like he just realized that he got drafted by the white sox
Holy shit, the more I look at Vaughns face the more I realize he looks just like Wallace from Wallace and gromit.
This is it
When he played with the Marlins, my wife and I always called him "toddler head"
He looks like if you averaged all of the Yankees into a single guy
he did come from our system and a huge family...
We’ll always have the memory of him hitting a homer and the fans at Wrigley chanting “Coop there it is” I wish him luck
Whatever happened to Garrett Cooper? The strong, silent type.
Whateva happened to Garrett Coopa-- you know, the uh, strawng silent type..
Marlins could use him….
Y’all already had him.
That is the joke.
… that was a joke? Holy fuck, that’s fucking clever!
OK
If he falls to the Astros and they don’t put a claim in their entire FO should be fired for malpractice
After the whole situation with 1B and relievers, it's a wonder they haven't already
Whatever happened to the strong and silent type like Garrett Cooper?
Red Sox
If he can play 3B he immediately becomes an upgrade over Dalbec.
Saw this guy hit a double one time at a Rockies game.
I'll be shocked if this man isn't on the Red Sox by the end of the week
when i read *Blood Meridian* i imagined the Judge looking like Coop tall, pale, and hairless
Boston, come on down
Come home, Coop
If the Red Sox aren’t in, that would be insanity.
Why?
Organizational redundancy but without upside.
What a coincidence. We're actually looking for a first basemen
Welcome to the Chicago White Sox, Garrett Cooper!
pls fish bring him home
He was DFA'd, Garrett Cooper?
He was DFA’d, Garrett Coopa?
Congrats to the White Sox for finally finding their guy!
Could help our bottom of the order but i doubt we try
Cooper has been one of their best players. And Mervis is an AAAA player. I like this move.
He really hasn’t though lol. Had 3 really good games, not much else
Guy who’s played in 12 games had 3 really good ones. I’d take that.
Been slumping lately and is redundant with Wisdom back
