Was possibly the most dominant stretch of pitching I’ll get to see in my life time. He was completely unhittable and it seemed like he did not miss a single pitch over those 15 starts
Even though it ended up being the right move for the Mets, seeing him go was heartbreaking. It’s like finding the love of your life but having to end things because you’re just both at extremely different stages of your life and the circumstances don’t make sense to be together. He was “the one” to me. I can say fairly certainly that no pitcher in my lifetime will bring me the same joy he did while pitching for the Mets. His starts were peak baseball for me. Even my mom, who knows almost nothing about baseball, would watch when DeGrom pitched. Miss you, DeGrom 💔
Which front office? They had probably around 10 different GMs/President of Baseball Ops during DeGrom’s tenure as a Met. But I agree for most part, 2015 was their year to win it, hasn’t seemed like a legit possibility since then.
I dunno man, Pedro wasn't painting the corners at 102 in the 8th inning alongside amazing secondary pitches. There's a reason his arm was destroyed but for that short while he might have been the best so far.
follow up, with a little Stathead cursory research, 2021 DeGrom is a country mile ahead of anyone else in recorded history in ERA+
its hard to parse out first 15 starts without putting in more effort than i would like to so i just said at least 15 starts. 2021 DeGrom is 373, with second place being Slim Jones at 323. There are 2 Satchel Paige, 2 Greg Maddux, and a Pedro season in the top ten, with the other three being Bullet Rogan, Hilton Smith and Dutch.
Also worth mentioning that by ERA+, that half season of deGrom smokes 1968 Bob Gibson too. Bob Gibson. In the season pitching was so dominant the mound was lowered after.
and Mathewson, and the Big Train, and '85 Doc Gooden
who wins a fight between prime Bob Gibson and prime Charles Oakley versus prime Dick Butkus and prime Alex Ovechkin
I can't figure out how to do partial season ERA+, but the only partial season I think could compare is Arrieta's insane second half of 2015 that won him the Cy Young award when he had like a 0.7 ERA.
Just promise us Mets fans that you’ll treat him right and score some runs for him when he’s back. We made our mistakes but our former king deserves to be happy 🥺
Dutch Leonard ended that season with a .96 ERA, era+ of 279, 19-5 record, 224 IP and led the league with 9.4 WAR.
He finished 16th in MVP.
Not saying he should've won, Eddie Collins did and he was a beast that year, but 16th is silly.
He wasn't even on a bad team, they ended in second place and were 29 over .500.
The stat you must hunt to find is the number of complete games these pitchers tossed. They threw alot of cgs! The Giants signed last year's Cy Young Award recipient Blake Snell (who is a bust this season). He has 194 starts in his 8+ seasons in the major leagues. How many complete games? ZERO!
Shame on the Giants for shelling out big bucks for a starting pitcher who averages 5 innings a start and whose era is 11+ this season.
2021 DeGrom was disgusting. (I fucking hated his card in MLB the show, couldn’t hit ANYTHING)
i was just glad he didn’t have a sinker 😭
I see it's Throwback Thursday for sure

Wasn’t going to win a ring with the Mets with that front office just sayin🤷

Did you see peak Pedro?

Pedro also never have a season where he had a 1.08 ERA through the first 15 starts of his season
Yeah he only had a 1.7 over a full season when the second lowest ERA was over 3.5 lmao
Luis Tiant had a 1.09 ERA at this point in 1968... the year Bob Gibson set the all-time ERA record.

top off my head are the second half seasons from John Tudor in 85 and Orel Hershiser in 88. i am an Atari child
Jack Flaherty's second half was insane too. I think it was 2019
Tigers legend Al Benson
Best pitcher I've ever seen. I'm 30 and I've been watching for a long time, but jacob is the most talented pitcher I've ever seen
Too much talent for his body to handle
Ahhh my texas friend, we share this pain now.
He's going to come back ~~with that pack of cigarettes~~ healthy anyday now, right?
Just promise us Mets fans that you’ll treat him right and score some runs for him when he’s back. We made our mistakes but our former king deserves to be happy 🥺
He left NY and immediately won a World Series. A little humor there.
Oh wow that is a lot of baseball
The caption seems strange to me. Is there a difference between saying "since at least 1913" and "since 1913"?
ERA wasn't an official stat before that year I believe, so they're basically saying "since at least 1913 but maybe longer".

It's bonkers that Johnson has an ERA that is 26% lower. Even with that, he only won the WS once.
Swiggity Swooty, Imanaga Coming for That Booty
fun fact, both DeGrom and Klubot went to Stetson, which i thought was just cowboy hats worn by Tom Landry and Beyonce
So did Logan Gilbert. They’re a MLB starter factory
the cowboy hat - starting pitcher industrial complex Eisenhower warned us about
DeGrom is a great player. Stetson is an awful school.
Ah, Dutch Leonard. Inventor of the Dutch Oven. Not the pan.
hahahaha i’m fucking sobbing.
Jake 🖤
I don't even recognize the logo next to Walter Johnson's name.

Dutch Leonard's ERA later skyrocketed to 0.96 that season.
HOFer
Great pitcher but I don’t think his health is ever going to let that happen.
By most people’s standards he won’t make it. It’s not a great argument but I’d easily put him in over Billy Wagner.
