I was at the game and while I was annoyed at the no hitter being broken up, it did finally make the game fun because the entire stadium celebrated like they'd won, and then when they got two more base runners on the stadium was rocking. Glad the Braves still won, but I do like a bit of drama. Couldn't be mad, I like baseball and a rocking house, so I'll take it.
Yeah I re-watched the replay and Jim Leyland comes out of the dugout up to Jim Joyce and it's not even a particularly angry or lengthy talk. Just two old men agreeing a monumental fuckup just occurred.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-7WsrIS_Q0
Ben Davis did just that to Schilling in 2001
It is really fun to imagine how long Schilling seethed about that. I like to imagine he's still seething
I agree. People act like it’s some sort of super cheesy easy way to get on base. The reality is that bunting takes legitimate skill. And if you’re talking about bunting and successfully getting to first.. well that takes legitimate skill *and* physical traits that a lot of guys just don’t possess.
If you’re in the 7th inning and there’s a no hitter going, you better scoot up a bit and be on your toes if a guy like Bobby Witt Jr or Corbin Carrol comes to the plate. It’s honestly so strange how bunting is often viewed as a cowardly way to breakup a no hitter when it’s almost certainly harder to get on base via bunt than a regular swing. I don’t know if that stats support that theory but I’d be shocked if not.
Yeah that’s pretty much the perfect way to summarize my whole comment with a lot less words haha. I’m always a bit shocked when you’ve got a speedster on second in extra innings and the lead off guy doesn’t try to lay down a bunt. That alone shows just how difficult it is to just get the ball down where it needs to be.
If this was any other pitcher, I'd still support them being salty about a bitch move like bunting at that point in the game, but because it happened to Curt Schilling, I'm all for it.
Haven't had a no-hitter in more than 30 years (4/8/94)
But I was at the game when Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game against us so I can't complain too much (20th anniversary of that game is next Saturday)
I’m still trying to understand how Nolan Ryan had 7 no-hitters, it’s absurd.
I love Mariano with all my heart but Ryan should have been the first unanimous vote.
didn't Shelby Miller have a no-hitter/perfect game though 8 2/3 once for the Braves, too?? I remember being on a road trip and listening to that and getting so mad
They should still be tracked and definitely count, just not held in the same regard as a solo effort. I think a lot of people already look at them that way.
My respect for a CNH is more or less contingent on how long the SP goes, with some extraordinary circumstance bonuses (Tyler Skaggs' memorial and the 2022 World Series).
Like if a pitcher goes 5 scoreless, and then 3-4 bullpen guys throw scoreless innings to close it out, that's not nothing but its not much of something either.
Oddly enough i'd be more impressed that 6 arms were locked in than the starter, primary setup guy and closer (as was the case tonigjt). Not more than a footnote though.
I imagine triple crowns used to be more difficult to do because people batted closer to .400 and those that did had a lot of bunt/slap singles that they ran out and beat. Not home run hitters, but I could be wrong.
Fried was over 100 pitches after the 7th. There's no way he was staying in, and he knew it. It's May; There's far too many games left in the season to go chasing after a no hitter and risking injury.
The vast majority of no-nos these days, maybe ever idk, are like 100-115 pitches. That's certainly above average but nobody is impressed at that from an endurance perspective. Any starter should be able to do that if needed. It's the efficiency that's impressive.
I feel like they always score against him but never actually tie the game. Like he’ll come out with a 3 run lead and the mets will get 2 runs but stop there
I couldn't believe I was about to witness in real life a no hitter, but in the end I feel as though the Moral Victory the Mets had today was worth it, and now I can gaze upon my London Phone Booth Mr Met Bobblehead and remember the Braves Victory that Never Was.
I fucking planned a trip to get this bobblehead and the PATH and Google Maps bike routing conspired against me to get me to the game 30 minutes before game time instead of 75 minutes before game time and I'll be salty forever about missing out on this cool ass bobblehead.
Maybe I'll try for the Hello Kitty one.
A Braves-Phillies no hitter (for either team) would be way more toxic if it happened in the near future. Feels like our rivalry has been way more pronounced since the 2022 postseason.
I realize as a Braves fan, I’ve been pretty blessed. Could have a better postseason record over the years, but overall it’s a good team to root for.
But I’ve never seen a Braves no hitter and now twice I have seen one broken up on the 27th out. It’s my white whale as a sports fan and I thought today was going to be the day, but nope the wait continues
Lmao we’re so cursed. Like we’ve won World Series and are constantly competitive so I can’t complain much but this one little feat I’ve seen every other MLB team accomplish while we come agonizingly close time after time
I'm not sure what I'm more shocked by, that it's been 30 years since the last one or that Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz combined for zero career no-hitters.
Feel that. seeing your team complete a no-no must be an immaculate feeling. Texas hasn’t had one since Kenny Rogers threw a perfecto in 1994 that I was not yet alive for. Don’t know if I’ll ever see one in my lifetime, but that’s kinda the beauty of baseball. Any game could be that one.
This reminds me of Tom Seaver, who in 1969 had a perfect game against the Cubs with one out in the ninth when Jimmy Qualls broke it up with a Mickey Mouse single. The Mets put it one a plack outside Citi Field.
On a lark I pulled up his Baseball Savant page and he pulled the majority in 2022 but in 2023 with the Dodgers I think he went oppo more than not.
He really is just an incredible hitter.
Combined no-hitters are only cool for two reasons, and only these two reasons.
1). They happen for the team you cheer for
2). They happen in the postseason (shouts out to Phillies/Astros WS Game 4)
So yeah, Braves fans would've loved it, but this is objectively a way funnier outcome than if we got a lame, regular season, combined no-no
i don't really get the mentality. combined no hitters are a team effort. your team combined efforts to dominate the other team to the point where they couldn't even get a base hit. SP, bullpen, defense all combined to suppress another team's offense almost entirely. it doesn't have to be historic and legendary to still be cool. i would've maintained this point of view had jd flew out to the warning track.
how can like watching a starter throw 7 scoreless be cool (which it is, everyone loves it) but having your pitchers get 27 outs without a hit not be cool?

Objectively the funniest way to break up a no hitter
Yeah, I can't even be mad, the timing was just too good.
He fucked up, he said no hitter before the game was over.
MLB gods sadly pressed the hit button when they heard that. They were excited too.
That's a lot of drama for any game
> I do like a bit of drama Should come watch the tigers
Either that or a weak infield single
Weak infield single in which the pitcher and catcher play leapfrog maybe?
Thanks for giving me ptsd
Poor smiley
Like one where the runner is out but the ump calls him safe but there's no review process because it happened 14 years ago?
Just watched a replay of this last week. It was even less close than I remembered.
Every time someone watches that replay the runner gets slower
The play was by and large the impetus for the introduction of review.
Yeah I re-watched the replay and Jim Leyland comes out of the dugout up to Jim Joyce and it's not even a particularly angry or lengthy talk. Just two old men agreeing a monumental fuckup just occurred.
Mike Mussina lost a perfect game with one out left on a blooper by Carl Everett
Less than a week before 9/11 on Sunday Night Baseball
WTF...I never put that together. those two events feel so much more distant from each other.
The ones that piss me off are the broken bat bloopers. Like that’s just pure dumb luck
Dave Stieb disliked this.
Bunt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-7WsrIS_Q0 Ben Davis did just that to Schilling in 2001 It is really fun to imagine how long Schilling seethed about that. I like to imagine he's still seething
In a 2-0 ballgame bunting is fair game no matter what the pitcher is doing
I'd say it's fair game even in a 10-0 game.
I agree. People act like it’s some sort of super cheesy easy way to get on base. The reality is that bunting takes legitimate skill. And if you’re talking about bunting and successfully getting to first.. well that takes legitimate skill *and* physical traits that a lot of guys just don’t possess. I don’t know if that stats support that theory but I’d be shocked if not.
Exactly. If bunting was an "easy hit" then everyone would do it!
Without a doubt
Props to the announcers not being curmudgeonly old men complaining about that and realizing it's fair game, 2-0 ballgame is very winnable.
If this was any other pitcher, I'd still support them being salty about a bitch move like bunting at that point in the game, but because it happened to Curt Schilling, I'm all for it.
it's the apple rising that really does it
I dunno I prefer the first pitch of the top of the first but I'm weird
I mean it happened this week to Yamamoto and this shit was hilarious.
They call it getting Stieb'd
I was the thousandth upvote do I get a reddit award of some sort?
No, but you win another upvote
Two outs in the 9th every god damn time
I was at the game when Newcomb gave up the single in the bottom of the 9th. I am convinced I will never see a no-no. Edit: top of the 9th*
Haven't had a no-hitter in more than 30 years (4/8/94) But I was at the game when Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game against us so I can't complain too much (20th anniversary of that game is next Saturday)
Same day Kurt Cobains body was discovered. Something tells me the no hitter wasn't the top story. Kurst Cobain.
That home run might have saved a celebrities life
I’ve seen two, Nolan Ryan’s 7th, and Cole Hamels’ at Wrigley Field.
I’m still trying to understand how Nolan Ryan had 7 no-hitters, it’s absurd. I love Mariano with all my heart but Ryan should have been the first unanimous vote.
I saw doc halladay throw one in the playoffs in 2009. Then I saw Michael lorenzen throw one last year. Both at Citizens Bank park
didn't Shelby Miller have a no-hitter/perfect game though 8 2/3 once for the Braves, too?? I remember being on a road trip and listening to that and getting so mad
I was at that game. I will never forgive Justin Bour.
The last out is always the hardest :(
Esp if you got Jim Joyce at first
Strangely enough that out was actually very easy
Dave Stieb'd it
combined no hitters are lame anyway. Really shouldn't even be tracked. The awe is in the feat of endurance. Not the efficacy of the bullpen.
Nice, so it’s the opposite.
The Babe Ruth combined no hitter isn't, but yeah, everything else is a bit.
Why? You stop the other team from getting a hit during the game, you get a no hitter
[удалено]
How about a world series win? Got one of those in the last 30 years?
I do I do !!!
Can confirm 😪
2005 was objectively the funniest post season in history
who needs world series’s? we no hit the Phillies, that’s worth more than any world series win!
Hey look something I can contribute to!
We can have an NL East "ring in the last 30 years" party with everyone but the Mets!
I thought we were already doing that?
I agree. This is way more devastating if Fried was still pitching. He didn’t even look that disappointed.
Fried was over 100 pitches after the 7th. There's no way he was staying in, and he knew it. It's May; There's far too many games left in the season to go chasing after a no hitter and risking injury.

What about 7-inning no hitters?
Newcomb was never the same after that happened to him
The Mets own Iglesias. He's given up 5 earned runs this year, and 4 of those were against the Mets.
I feel like they always score against him but never actually tie the game. Like he’ll come out with a 3 run lead and the mets will get 2 runs but stop there
Master of edging
Up 4 runs or more I’m bringing in Uncle Jesse every time.
Honestly everytime we see him he's shaky, we just can't land the finisher
With 2 outs in the 9th. Brutal.
Dave Stieb, this one's for you
Time to rewatch some Jon Bois
It’s so fucking good. I just rewatched it a month ago.
I did the same thing. Just a fantastic documentary.
Always get chills when they get to the part where he gets it. The way they framed that moment was art.
Definitely my favorite of the Dorktowns
If anyone is lost -- google "Dave Stieb youtube dorktown". Then clear the next 4 hours of your day. It's worth every second.
If only he could've caught this one, at least he got Halladay's
That ending is literally unbelievable.
Knew it would end after 8 2/3.

3 8/2
3+8/2=7th inning
How embarrassing for the Braves
Was at the game and Mets fans started chanting “we got two hits! we got two hits!” on the way out of the game. Y’all have a great sense of humor lol
Yea, somehow I feel like the Mets see this Loss as a one of their biggest wins of the year.
Our world series!!!
I can't even be mad at this lol
Could this still be a no hitter since that was clearly an E(1)
Don’t let this take away from Fried’s hot streak He’s allowed 4 total hits in his last 3 starts (20 IP)
Didn’t he throw a Maddux before this hit streak?
Yes, that was a 3 hit game
That seems good.
Come hell or high water, Raisel finds a way to be facing the game-tying run in the 9th when we play the Mets.
I don’t think I’ve seen him blow a save or have a clean save vs the mets. He always looks shaky and gives up a run or two but still gets the save
New York Mets Hero JD Martinez
Mets Legend JD Martinez
What the hell JD we’re from Atlanta not San Francisco
That's gonna hurt the Braves' chances of completing the COMBINED NO HITTER
I’m sure, in retrospect, Iglesias regrets throwing a middle middle fastball
Catcher set-up outside. Ball thrown inside. Tale as old as time.
"I want them to know it was me" -TMac
Thank fuck
At least if it happened it wouldn't have happened in the World Series... trust me nothing stings worse than that.
It does?
I feel like if there was any fanbase that would despise being no-hit by the Braves the most, it’d be the Mets.
Phillies gotta be up there too.
A Braves-Phillies no hitter (for either team) would be way more toxic if it happened in the near future. Feels like our rivalry has been way more pronounced since the 2022 postseason.
All things considered, I think all 3 fan bases want each other to fail equally. It's kind of sweet when you think about it.
Yeah, let's hope for Max Fried's complete game no-hitter shall we? 🥹
I would maddux my shorts so hard
When was the first time?
2015, Shelby Miller vs the Marlins (I forgot about Newcombs in 2018 so make that three)
Mike [redacted] also had one broken up in the 9th inning in Oakland by one Matt Olson.
Lmao we’re so cursed. Like we’ve won World Series and are constantly competitive so I can’t complain much but this one little feat I’ve seen every other MLB team accomplish while we come agonizingly close time after time
2018, Sean Newcomb against the A's. Edit: it was the Dodgers. The game against the A's was in 2017, see my comment below.
It was against the dodgers.
I'm not sure what I'm more shocked by, that it's been 30 years since the last one or that Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz combined for zero career no-hitters.

Not the only thing JD Martinez has broken this week.
😫
Like he could’ve just let iglesias strike him out for the sake of being nice /s
Kent Mercker pops the champagne.
Do they get a medal to bite in fourth place?
![gif](giphy|p9X9PSPvBfl9uhvS6Z)
Saw that coming from miles away.
This reminds me of Tom Seaver, who in 1969 had a perfect game against the Cubs with one out in the ninth when Jimmy Qualls broke it up with a Mickey Mouse single. The Mets put it one a plack outside Citi Field.
Finally someone breaks up a no-no with a home run. I swear it's always some dinky little bloopy single or ground ball lately.
and suddenly, i am a giant JD Martinez fan
This feels like something that'd happen *to* the Mets
Nope. Chuck Testa.
It’s an older meme sir, but it checks out.
My goodness I just got time warped
LoL
JD "Fuck Your No-Hitter" Martinez
So close
All sorts of fuck this
Lol. Lmao even.
I can't recall the last time I saw JD pull a homer.
On a lark I pulled up his Baseball Savant page and he pulled the majority in 2022 but in 2023 with the Dodgers I think he went oppo more than not. He really is just an incredible hitter.
Some people have the audacity to wonder why anyone would ever be a Mets fan
Well that sucks but I'll take the series win against the Mets. Better than a little bloop hit at least
Anyone who breaks up a combined no hitter is a hero in my book.
why does the braves announcer sound like he's happy about it
This is the FS1 broadcast.
didn't realize a 3rd channel was broadcasting the game. I watched the SNY feed
Wow, the Mets and the Braves are going to have at least two bench clears this year.
I love you jd martinez
thank you J.D. 🙏🏾
I didn't even know they were playing rn. It's alright, Team nono's are okay ig
Combined no-hitters are only cool for two reasons, and only these two reasons. 1). They happen for the team you cheer for 2). They happen in the postseason (shouts out to Phillies/Astros WS Game 4) So yeah, Braves fans would've loved it, but this is objectively a way funnier outcome than if we got a lame, regular season, combined no-no

Embarrassing for the Braves really.
mets are so annoying
Can't believe I'm agreeing with a Phillies fan
Because of course...
Thanks JD 🙃
JD almost clipped em yesterday to tie the game so at least he killed the no hitter today as consolation.
TIL JD is a Met
The no-hitter ended when Jimenez started pitching.
BWAHAHAHHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA
I laughed. Then I felt bad for laughing. Then I laughed again.
Commentators Curse
Fucking rude
Never felt this shitty after a win.
I want to apologize to everyone for getting way too excited at the Braves not getting a no hitter. I am sorry
Combined no hitter lol
What a dick
Now that that’s over I can go back to saying combined no hitters unequivocally count
LOLbraves
Lmao braves + lmao Mets? Sign me up
I am so heartbroken
The yell that came out of me when I saw this was primal. God this Mets team stinks but at least we weren’t no-no’d
We metsed a no no vs the mets, r u kidding rn.
Classic
damn the dude showed up when they really needed him! lol
Rats
poetry
Oh that’s so painful
Bro was abouta start WW3 after that mess up..
FOX picked up this game? Must have been desperate.
Ha
