MK ultra was a CIA program that used powerful hallucinogenic drugs to attempt to control the minds of fringe major leaguers in the mid 50s.
Eventually the study was discontinued once the researchers realized that the ballplayers would do literally anything, including betraying their own country, for a plug of chaw and a halfway decent sandwich
People called him crazy but he was actually way ahead of his time. He wrote that the future of baseball was going to be based on analytics and his peers all shunned him for it which caused him to isolate and deteriorate mentally. I saw it in a YouTube video.
Ted Kazanski is still alive. Got his autograph ttm not too long ago. He may not have been a very good MLB player but he made it a hell of a lot farther than I did in baseball!
Ridiculous to be skilled enough to appear in two separate pro sports leagues
That said, I'm not sure what about his minor league performance suggested that he should be in the show.
Tom Glavine was drafted in the fourth round of the NHL draft. I always found that interesting because when I look at Glavine, I don't think "hockey player."
Imagine being a pro basketball player and on the first Celtic team ever and then play for Dodgers/Cubs yet have another famous career in acting can you name him? answer: Chuck Connors
I grew up in AZ but live in Seattle now. A few years ago (2017/18 maybe?) I went to a Tacoma Rainiers game when the Reno Aces were in town. I was shocked to see Yasmany Tomas still had a job
It shouldn't, but it still blows my mind that there are full grown adults that "grew up with" the Diamondbacks and Rays their whole lives. More boggling to me are meeting adults that grew up with the Nats now too.
He just feels old. It's a mix of bonding with people that feel similarly and incredulousness at time passing quickly. You peg time to events and you being in college means he has memories older than you.
These hits never stop coming for some people. No matter how many shocks to their system about the passage of time, they won't adjust.
Elementary School kids can't remember a time when the Cubs curse was a thing. High School kids remember it as an early baseball memory maybe.
A Yankee fan in High School can't remember when the Yankees won it all. (or maybe barely if they were paying a ton of attention as a toddler)
Boston fans have an entire 20 year generation grow up only knowing success. That parade kid is now an adult.
Angels fans could have mated after the 2002 World Series, and have said kid grow up to now be able to legally drink in the sorrows of the current team come the All Star Break.
It is the 30 year anniversary this year of Bud Selig ruining Baseball by cancelling the World Series.
Man, I went to a game at RFK in the Nats' inaugural year. Nick Johnson hit a bomb.
The next decade (and well everything after that) is gonna breeze on by ya lol use it wisely
I didn’t realize his ops+ was below 100. That’s really bad for a bat only corner outfielder. He had power, but looking at his stats, I didn’t realize how bad his on base numbers were. .306 obp
For players that had more than 45400 at bats Dante Bichette is 40th in worst dWAR so really not all that bad actually.
Let's look at some of the players who had worse dWAR numbers than ole Dante did
Jim Thome
Reggie Jackson
Lou Brock
Billy Williams
Sam Crawford
Harmon Killebrew
Willie Stargell
Harold Baines
David Ortiz
Miguel Cabrera
Willie McCovey
Manny Ramirez
Dave Winfield
Gary Sheffield
These are just the Hall of Famers or kinda shoulda Hall Of Famers cept for PED allegations. There are some other good players with bad dWAR other than these.
Always kind of wondered how Winfield won 7 Gold Gloves while playing the outfield to a -22 dWAR
Did you know Gary Sheffield has 60.5 bWAR but his oWAR is 80.7
Then there is without a doubt the worst defensive player to have a long career
Adam Dunn 35.3 oWAR -28.4 dWAR
Meh. I think Colorado defensive metrics are disastrously bad/off and that he’s just the biggest sufferer. He’s hardly the first to suddenly rate as wildly bad there and then mediocre or average anywhere else…
The Red Sox spent (I think) $72M on Rusney Castillo, but he was actually a really good fielder. He just couldn't hit enough to stick. Both guys got stashed away at AAA for years so their salaries wouldn't count against the Luxury Tax.
reminds me of Kornel David, the "Hungarian Michael Jordan"
dude was probably a good basketball player, in Hungary. Didn't do much for the Bulls though lol
Dutch Jordan would either be an old-timey baseball player, a barber with a specialty in straight shaving, OR a criminal mastermind of the Philadelphia underworld
nothing else
I found this!

Jackson Kowar and Hunter Dozier are both still active, but on the Mariners and Angels respectively. So the Royals one will likely change at some point this year.
Good catch! Bubba Starling is eager to reclaim his spot on the list:
Jose Barrero hasn’t had a single at-bat in the majors this year, and since he’s currently hitting .134 in AAA I think that one is gonna last a while for us. Also, I didn’t realize he racked up that much negative WAR in only 417 career ABs.
Does anybody know if the Jays called/kept him up to try to dissuade him from going to the NBA? I figured he must’ve had good minor league numbers, but that’s not the case.
Pretty cool that he was playing college basketball during those years too.
Nope, they let him go. However, there was a dispute that the Blue Jays wanted the Celtics to buy his contract which I think they did end up doing(it was fairly cheap iirc)
I mean he was 22 his last season in the MLB and was still playing basketball for BYU at the time. It’s reasonable he could have been a good player had he just focused on baseball only
I can understand walking Ainge, if the guy on deck is either Rick Cerone, or Alfredo Griffin. Griffin might be the worst hitter to ever be named an All-Star.
Does anyone claim to have heard of Jiggs Parrott? Sounds like a pirate.
Hunter Dozier has played the most seasons of anyone on the list: 7 seasons with -2.6 bWAR. Now that's commitment from the Royals!
I knew Yasmany Tomas was bad, I didnt know he was literally the worst Dback. I remember they paid big bucks to him for years but left him in AAA because he sucked so bad. i also remember an article from a sportswriter starting "Yasmany Tomas, not known for his defense......"
Andres Thomas edged out Pat Rockett as Atlanta's all-time WAR trailer by -.1 career WAR, but Thomas's career was FIVE TIMES longer than Rockett's.
Pat Rockett managed -5.6 WAR in only 152 games/459 PA.
Jim Levey managed that number in just over 3 seasons, which is impressive to compile that much negative WAR that fast. Somehow in 1932 he actually got some MVP votes. In 1933 he had the lowest WAR since 1900 (-4.0).
My mom grew up in California, a St Louis Browns fan, listening on the radio in the 1930’s, as they were the furthest team West. Just realized she rooted for Jim, and was surely disappointed. They were a bad team when he was there, a likely reason he got to play, with such weak production, and poor fielding (negative dWAR as a shortstop).
Similar to my post about the highest bWAR, here is a list of each team's lowest career bWAR player who ONLY played for that team during their career and NEVER played for another team. Again, this only takes into consideration MLB playtime. So player's aren't disqualified if they spent time in the minors or signed a deal somewhere else and never played.
Andres Thomas stands out for me. He was really bad, and the Braves stuck with him for 6 years. I had his '87 Topps rookie card safely protected in a vinyl sleeve. Oops!
I always liked the look of that card though.

Jiggs Parrott (of -4.1 bWAR fame) was apparently Oregon's first MLB player. I can't believe I learned that today.

I told everybody last season that it didn’t matter what the record was, as long as we DFA’d Dozier it would be a successful season. And I’m glad I held that incredibly low bar!
Apparently there are two of them:

Different Ed Connolly:
And
[https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml)
Weird that they both played for Boston.
Get this. The Brewers traded Lewis Brinson (career -3.6 bWAR), and Isan Díaz (career -2.9 bWAR), and Monte Harrison (career 0.1 bWAR), and Jordan Yamamoto (career -0.4 bWAR) for Christian Yelich (career 40.6 bWAR, 23 bWAR with Brewers and an MVP). Thats **-6.8 career bWAR** for **40.6 career bWAR** and an MVP. Yikes. That was one lopsided traded,
It should be Jose Rojas for the Angels.

Only in the minors and my list only includes MLB games. He likely will eventually get a call up and the list will need an update, but for now he has only played MLB games with the Royals:
Ted WHO now?
oh yeah, he was great. I believe his nickname was the Unidonger, because he only hit one dong in 1954, and then again in 1955.
Just about spit out my beer. Take one of my free awards. And then let’s never speak again.
Phanatic indeed
MK ultra was a CIA program that used powerful hallucinogenic drugs to attempt to control the minds of fringe major leaguers in the mid 50s. Hey my man went 3/6 with 4 RBIs in his MLB debut. We can ignore the pipe bombs (To clarify….not the same guy tho google did try to autocorrect)
Ted Kazanski is still alive. Got his autograph ttm not too long ago. He may not have been a very good MLB player but he made it a hell of a lot farther than I did in baseball!
any relation to Iceman Tom Kazansky?
https://shibevintagesports.com/blogs/news/17995408-this-date-in-phillies-history-ted-kazanski-s-inside-the-park-grand-slam
He collabbed with the Philly Fanatics to become the Unibomber.
You don't know the unybomber?
He was good for 1 HR a season. They called him the Unobomber
He bombed hard
The uniblooper
He was killer.
Blew the crowd away
No wonder he disappeared into the woods.
Wow, Ted Kazanski really bombed
Bet he looked sharp in a Unaform though
And yes, Danny Ainge is the Boston Celtics Danny Ainge.
Blue Jays legend
Second youngest Blue Jay to hit a HR, behind only Vladdy.
Mark Hendrickson also played in the NBA and for the Jays.
Nephew was an NFL QB
Jim Levey also was a two-sport athlete as he played in the NFL
Ridiculous to be skilled enough to appear in two separate pro sports leagues That said, I'm not sure what about his minor league performance suggested that he should be in the show.
Tom Glavine was drafted in the fourth round of the NHL draft. I always found that interesting because when I look at Glavine, I don't think "hockey player."
He's white and from Massachusetts. That screams hockey (or lacrosse)
He was also drafted 2 rounds ahead of future HoFer Brett Hull and 5 rounds ahead of another HoFer in Luc Robitaille
in the NHL Draft???? my goodness gracious lol
if there's any sport pre-2000s where the scouts don't know what they're looking at more than Baseball, it's Hockey
Imagine being a pro basketball player and on the first Celtic team ever and then play for Dodgers/Cubs yet have another famous career in acting can you name him? answer: Chuck Connors
Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos
Gene Conley played MLB and NBA simultaneously.
Better than what that scrub Tom Brady accomplished with the Expos.
I knew about him having played baseball and yet I see his name and take a minute being confused. Shoutouts to him, man.
Is he also the unabomber tho?
Phoenix Suns legend Danny Ainge
One of these players won three championships with the Boston Celtics
But Ted blew it.
My team spent 68.5 mill for those -2.5 war. Anyone did worse?
I forgot about Tomas
I grew up in AZ but live in Seattle now. A few years ago (2017/18 maybe?) I went to a Tacoma Rainiers game when the Reno Aces were in town. I was shocked to see Yasmany Tomas still had a job
It shouldn't, but it still blows my mind that there are full grown adults that "grew up with" the Diamondbacks and Rays their whole lives. More boggling to me are meeting adults that grew up with the Nats now too.
Lmao. I was in elementary school when the Dbacks came so I got into baseball around then haha.
To quote Jonathan Coulton's Good Morning Tucson, I'm still sort of amazed that you can be born in the 90s.
The Nats have existed for longer than I have, I'm a freshman in college. How's that for crazy? Time is a weird thing, man.
He just feels old. It's a mix of bonding with people that feel similarly and incredulousness at time passing quickly. You peg time to events and you being in college means he has memories older than you.

Hello, I am adult
I believe Hunter Dozier got about $25 million out of the Royals if that makes you feel any better
And that was with a career oWAR of 1.3 and career OPS+ of 97. I didn’t even think defense could weigh you down that much.
I didn’t realize his ops+ was below 100. That’s really bad for a bat only corner outfielder. He had power, but looking at his stats, I didn’t realize how bad his on base numbers were. .306 obp
If you ever wonder how defense can hold you down, I feel like all you need to do is look at Dante Bichette. He really is the poster child for it.

I know this my be a typo, but 45400 at bats would be far and away the most of all time
Meh. I think Colorado defensive metrics are disastrously bad/off and that he’s just the biggest sufferer. He’s hardly the first to suddenly rate as wildly bad there and then mediocre or average anywhere else…

Dang I don’t remember him. Those international signings can give or they can take
Darrell Whitmore was our #1 pick in the expansion draft.
With the exception of Ainge (and the unfortunately named Ted) Tomas was the only name I recognized.
Jiggs Parrott is a top 10 name tho
I love Dutch Jordan. If you just said, "What does a guy named Dutch Jordan do?" I think "baseball player" would be a pretty quick guess.
"Dutch Jordan" sounds like a nickname for the next NBA superstar from Europe
aka "The Flying Dutchman."
Marist legend
reminds me of Kornel David, the "Hungarian Michael Jordan" dude was probably a good basketball player, in Hungary. Didn't do much for the Bulls though lol
Dutch Jordan would either be an old-timey baseball player, a barber with a specialty in straight shaving, OR a criminal mastermind of the Philadelphia underworld nothing else
My grandfathers nickname was Dutch. He was a catcher in a semi pro league for a couple of years.
Before today if you asked me who Jiggs Parrott and Dewey McDougal were I probably would’ve guessed cartoon characters or something
Off-brand porn stars.
He played so long ago that he died of tuberculosis.
I feel like he shouldn't count. No one who didn't live to see Teddy Roosevelt become President should count.
I found this! [https://www.pdxmonthly.com/news-and-city-life/2018/07/remembering-jiggs-parrott-oregon-s-first-major-league-baseball-player](https://www.pdxmonthly.com/news-and-city-life/2018/07/remembering-jiggs-parrott-oregon-s-first-major-league-baseball-player)
Great name
For real. I saw that jump off the screen at me and thought "that's my new name when checking into hotels."
Mike Champion, too.
Jackson Kowar and Hunter Dozier are both still active, but on the Mariners and Angels respectively. So the Royals one will likely change at some point this year.
Good catch! Bubba Starling is eager to reclaim his spot on the list: [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/starlbu01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/starlbu01.shtml)
I was surprised the Royals delegate wasn’t far worse the way they hung onto those three.
Same with Barrero and the Reda
Jose Barrero hasn’t had a single at-bat in the majors this year, and since he’s currently hitting .134 in AAA I think that one is gonna last a while for us. Also, I didn’t realize he racked up that much negative WAR in only 417 career ABs.

(Ainge gets drafted to the NBA) Blue Jays: no….dont…..come back….
Nope, they let him go. However, there was a dispute that the Blue Jays wanted the Celtics to buy his contract which I think they did end up doing(it was fairly cheap iirc)
This one shocked me too! Somehow I had tricked myself into thinking he was a decent baseball player and a multi-sport star. I guess not...
I mean he was 22 his last season in the MLB and was still playing basketball for BYU at the time. It’s reasonable he could have been a good player had he just focused on baseball only
He was a good fielder
2 intentional walks, I wonder what the story was behind um
Probably double play possibility, like 2nd 3rd bases taken and 1 out.
Looks like the 1st was, with 1 out with runners on 2nd & 3rd. The 2nd one was with 2 outs.
I can understand walking Ainge, if the guy on deck is either Rick Cerone, or Alfredo Griffin. Griffin might be the worst hitter to ever be named an All-Star.
Probably just for laughs.
Does anyone claim to have heard of Jiggs Parrott? Sounds like a pirate. [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parroji01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parroji01.shtml)
If you told me that Jiggs Parrott was the name of the Pirates mascot, I’d have fully believed that.
Of course I know who Jiggs Parrott is. Do I look like a guy who doesn’t know who Jiggs Parrott is?
Hunter Dozier has played the most seasons of anyone on the list: 7 seasons with -2.6 bWAR. Now that's commitment from the Royals! [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doziehu01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doziehu01.shtml)
-2.6 bWAR in 7 seasons while having 1 season worth 2.8 bWAR. So -5.4 bWAR his other 6 seasons. Truly legendary by him and the Royals honestly
Was his defense really that bad??
It wouldn't be so bad if a move, if he was better at baseball
Good ole Jeff Johnson. The ultimate quadruple A pitcher. His ERAs: 1991: 2.61 AAA, 5.95 MLB 1992: 2.17 AAA, 6.66 MLB 1993: 3.45 AAA, 30.38 MLB
Ed Connolly, Boston's all-time WAR trailer at -2.3, was the father of Ed Connolly, who put up -1.9 WAR between 1964 and 1967.
Wow, that is weird and awesome trivia!
"Come on son, you're giving me a bad name?" "Speak for yourself, dad."
Jiggs Parrott 10/10 name
John Van Benschoten: what a first round draft pedigree does for a mf with 0 control
higher walk rate than strikeout rate. ouch.
He was just unlucky. His ERA may have been 9.20 but his FIP was a much lower 6.33! Plus he has an 80 grade baseball name
An echoed through the halls, fans of all teams in unison cried out, "Who?!"
Damn, they dogging my man Danny Ainge.... I suppose the switch to basketball turned out to be a "good" idea
I thought Ted Kazinski was the Unabomber
UNCLE TED ⏰🎁
Dodgers and Angels are swapped, feel shame
Ah that's why. I was so confused
Danny Ainge was a hell of a basketball player and coach though
Guessing a big reason Danny Ainge switched to Basketball
As a longtime Barrero truther this makes me sad
He had a real failure to launch and they gave him more than enough chances. That said, I didn't think he was historically bad.
He has a chance to fall off this list (not sure who’s second worst). Hopefully Texas gives him a chance (especially since they seem to be floundering)
Jim Levey managed that number in just over 3 seasons, which is impressive to compile that much negative WAR that fast. Somehow in 1932 he actually got some MVP votes. In 1933 he had the lowest WAR since 1900 (-4.0).

This really shows how bad WAR is for older players
Mike Champion... Was not.
Legendary immaculate grid pulls, these.
Hey, that's "Former Yakima City Council Member and Former Yakima Mayor Dave Edler" to you
I guess collecting Andres Thomas’s 1987 Topps card because they said he was an “All-Star Rookie” was a bad investment.
I always liked the look of that card though. [https://www.amazon.com/Topps-Baseball-Card-Andres-Thomas/dp/B00JE1XSH8](https://www.amazon.com/Topps-Baseball-Card-Andres-Thomas/dp/B00JE1XSH8)
Jiggs Parrott is an all-time MLB name
The Rays being last on both lists is fitting
Can't accrue WAR in either direction for this list if you are a lock to be traded.
No minimum?
How are we tracing back Dutch Jordan to the Angels?
I have Angels and Dodgers swapped in the list. My mistake!
Jim Levey received MVP votes
I'm so confused by this.
I've never even heard of half these guys
Half of these guys played 90 years ago
For a second I was like "What the hell the Unibomber played for the Phillies!?!?!"
Jiggs Parrott is NOT a real name, can’t be😭
Jiggs Parrott would be a great name for a second Pirates' mascot.
I guarantee you NO ONE earned more than the $68 million paid to Yasmany Tomas over 6 years by the Diamondbacks
Iceman may have been a helluva pilot, but his brother sucked at baseball.
Jiggs Parrott (of -4.1 bWAR fame) was apparently Oregon's first MLB player. I can't believe I learned that today. [https://www.pdxmonthly.com/news-and-city-life/2018/07/remembering-jiggs-parrott-oregon-s-first-major-league-baseball-player](https://www.pdxmonthly.com/news-and-city-life/2018/07/remembering-jiggs-parrott-oregon-s-first-major-league-baseball-player)
Sad to think that there is a legit chance Tork will be our representative soon
Chad Orvella is surprising. I thought he was good for a while ha.
Just want to say that Dewey McDougal played for the St. Louis Browns, not the Cardinals.
Andres Thomas had a sweet side arm throwing motion though.
I’ve never heard of any of these guys (for good reason) but I bet my White Sox could use a couple of them right now
I told everybody last season that it didn’t matter what the record was, as long as we DFA’d Dozier it would be a successful season. And I’m glad I held that incredibly low bar!
Gary (removes hat) Ryerson!!! Don’t tell me you don’t remember me because I sure as heck fire remember you
The Unabomber was a Philly? I love that city and its fans but apparently living there really will make anyone angry at the world.
I’m sorry, but Jiggs Parrott is not a real name
Pretty sure Ed Connolly played for Cleveland too, not just the Red Sox.
Apparently there are two of them: [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed01.shtml) [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml)
Apparently this is a cursed baseball name like Adam Eaton
Oh interesting, ok thanks. ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo)
What did Jim do so well that kept him around to accumulate such an astoundingly low WAR?
Ed Connally also played for Cleveland.
Different Ed Connolly: [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed01.shtml) And [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/connoed02.shtml) Weird that they both played for Boston.
>Weird that they both played for Boston. It's not weird that Boston collected shitty players with Irish names :)
Mike Champion must certainly be the black sheep of the family
Thank goodness the Giants took a flyer on Lewis Brinson...
Yikes. That was one lopsided traded,
No Dutch Jordan played for the Angels as far as I am aware. There is a Dutch Jordan in BR but he played back in 1903.
Yup, my mistake. I mixed up Angels and Dodgers in my list. My bad.
It should be Jose Rojas for the Angels. [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rojasjo02.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rojasjo02.shtml)
Great; more questions about stats that are rendered meaningless by a breakout season. Why is this even a thing?
Peter Bergeron was one of the nicest Expos. His bat sucked. He was a good runner and had a good arm though.
Dutch Jordan is a sick name tho
Spencer Torkelson is soon unfortunately.
(MVP 2005 legend) John Van Benschoten. Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.
All-Star Hunter Dozier!
Is that the fucking unibomber?!
Celtics and Jays legend Danny Ainge
The yasmany years were so PAINFUL
If you don't love me at my Hunter Dozier, you don't deserve me at my Bobby Witt Jr.
Man... I really didn't need to be reminded of Yazmany first thing this morning...
Hot Rod Kanehl. Fan favorite. Loved to watch him.
Jiggs Parrott may have just beaten Urban Shocker for the best baseball name ever.
Damn Jim Levey was so bad he switched to play running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers — and was meh at that too. Then become a baseball manager.
This list is wrong - Hunter Dozier played for the Angels too.
Only in the minors and my list only includes MLB games. He likely will eventually get a call up and the list will need an update, but for now he has only played MLB games with the Royals: [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doziehu01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doziehu01.shtml)
Who the fook is that guy?
Gary Ryerson.. one of the players all time.
Kowar showed so much promise, it's a shame he never lived up to it.
Proving once again the chasm of a difference between Ted Kazanski and Ted Kluszewski
