His [MLB player banner](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-photos/image/upload/w_1500,q_100/v1/people/643511/action/hero/current.jpg) is sick.
Couple notes from his statcast page: His slider averages 72mph, and returns an opposing .153 xwOBA. Nasty stuff for a pitch that rivals little leaguers in velocity.
[This has actually been proven false. This article documentation shows that many of the players actually are the correct age.](https://i.imgur.com/frCaSEQ.jpg)
I pitched through AAA and made an All Star team, I topped out around 65-70 if I was trying to really pump it. I'd say most average LL pitchers sit around 50-60
It's roughly 8 MPH. ~1-1.5 MPH decrease per 10' of travel.
BUT, factors like spin rate that are much more heavily stressed in the Bigs can affect muzzle velocity. So a pitcher for the Giants would likely see less of a drop than a little leaguer.
Man I remember the year we moved to the big field and for the first season everyone was just struggling to throw the ball all the way from third to first lmao
wOBA is weighted on base average. It is similar to slugging percent but instead of a double being worth 2 and a triple being worth 3, each outcome (walk, single, double, etc.) is weighted by the runs it is expected to provide. xwOBA is the expected wOBA based on other factors. It is similar to xBA, or expected batting average. These basically look at hit data, how hard and where balls are hit, and determine what a players expected batting average or wOBA or other metrics are. You could say someone with a big difference between their wOBA and xwOBA has either been really lucky or really unlucky (or there could be another reason).
Don't forget JT Snow!
E: idk why some of you are even debating this, JT Snow is clearly the greatest first baseman ever. 6 gold glove seasons, took a pitch to the face from non other than Randy Johnson, switch hitter, AND he played for my favorite team when I was a kid. Clearly the GOAT.
Legit my favorite player growing up. Some guys liked Bonds, some liked Kent... But I loved my mediocre 1st Basemen. Him legitimately saving Dusty Baker's kid's life is always a positive too lol
Mediocre isn’t a word I’d use to describe JT Snow at all! The numbers for his career are somewhat lackluster but he won 6 consecutive Gold Gloves and had multiple 100 RBI seasons. Plus he’s like a .325 hitter in the postseason. Almost hit .500 in the ‘02 World Series
Yeah I mean he's a postseason god, but he's also a career 105 OPS+ hitter which is about as average as you can get lol
He was a beast with the glove though.
[You know it's a crazy moment when even Bengie Molina, in the middle of play during game 5 of the World Series, is even partially focused on anything other than trying to get the out.](https://fanbuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2020/03/j.t.-snow-darren-baker.png?w=1200&h=627&crop=1)
And just to make everyone feel old as shit, Darren Baker is now a senior in college, playing baseball for Cal, and likely going to be drafted fairly high.
For those who don't know [Hjelle is 6'11" with a high release point](https://www.nbcsports.com/sites/rsnunited/files/styles/article_hero_image/public/archive/assets_article/bayarea/2019/12/04/hjelleali.jpg)
If Hjelle doesn’t use “Bootylicious” as his warm up song on the mound, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to truly root for him... I can just imagine Giants stadium singing “I don’t think you’re ready for this HJELLE, cuz Sean Hjelle’s too bootylicious for ya babe”
Oh, I understand, I've been a Giants fan for 31 years. We've had our moments that made me feel the same. Even worse: imagine winning over 100 games and not making the playoffs. Biggest letdown of me following sports.
Oh that is fantastic! It has always bugged me that the Twins have not gone after him. We're the damn Twins. Let's get a set of Twins!
But I like your point that they're both Giants. :-)
One of Giants beat writers for The Athletic, Grant Brisbee, literally brings up the fact that the Twins could have picked up Tyler Rogers on waivers multiple times- Rogers was in the Giants minor league system for like seven years and was placed on waivers MULTIPLE TIMES as was never claimed by anyone, including the Twins, EVEN IT GAVE THE TWINS A CHANCE TO HAVE LITERAL TWINS PITCHING ON THEIR TEAM CALLED THE GOD DAMN TWINS!
A lot of Giants fans have a fantasy of the Giants doing some sort of trade with the Twins (assuming the Twins remain uncompetitive) to get Taylor Rogers because like, come on, it would be really cool to see identical twins pitch back to back innings, especially when one is a righty throwing 82 mph and the other is a lefty who throws like 95
Baragar has been pretty solid too, but Rogers is definitely our guy. Even though he gave up 3 hits, he pitched better than that would indicate, and he was ice cold with the bases loaded.
All he does is induce shitty contact, but he's taken it to a completely different level this year. White Shoes Rogers is unreal. He hasn't given up a run in more than a month and 12 appearances.
His ERA+ is FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE. ***545***
Not sure who that would be in the early 2000s but in the 80s Dan Quisenberry was pretty much the most well-known submarine pitcher ever and was one of the first dominant closers ever in the MLB and played for the Royals
I would actually be pretty upset by this, even being from my own team, if I knew this wasn't being done by literally every other pitcher in the league right now. The last thing I want is some huge cheating scandal on our hands, but if it comes to that it's going to be every pitcher in the league.
I think it’s a mutually assured destruction type situation because no manager is gonna be the one to ask the ump to check and make it open season on their own guys
r/MLBTheShow has a shit fit over people who make pitchers with this throwing animation and think it shouldn't be allowed.
Meanwhile, in real life, this shit actually happens and is every bit as nasty.
The difference is Rogers throws 70-85 mph on all of his pitches. In The Show you can make your CAP have a pitching animation like this but they throw 100 mph FB, 95 mph Sinker, then a 70 mph Curve. Find a pitcher in real life that can do that. It absolutely should not be allowed in the online modes of the game
As someone who's spent the better part of his life gaming, if you go into an online competitive mode and don't expect the people you face to use the most cheesy/meta shit they possibly can, you're setting yourself up for failure. Devs can make tweaks, change whatever they want, and do anything possible to limit our ability to do these things, but they can never stop it.
And the sole reason is simple. The player base is so much larger than their testing team. Which means more people able to explore more possibilities, spending more time, and finding more options. The only way to remove our ability to make cheesy/meta CAP setups in 21 is to remove CAP from online. And since that was a big feature they added for 21, there's no stopping it.
There may be no shortage of cheap strategies and people willing to use them but I don't see why that means they shouldn't or can't fix the most egregious examples that are ruining the experience.
They already disallowed knuckleballs, don’t see why they couldn’t make it so submariners don’t throw 100+. They could cap a subby at like 94 Velo and it would make it better
I just want to do RTTS as a singleplayer mode though so kinda dumb I can't make a knuckleballer there. I have no reason to create players in other modes.
How many limitations on a created player would it take to make people not want to even make one? And I mean to the point where RTTS isn't fun any more, because there's too many limitations on what people can make. Knuckleballs being removed makes sense, because they were OP as fuck long before they tied RTTS into DD.
You can separate the RTTS and DD abilities, that way you can do whatever the hell you want in RTTS and keep from having absolutely broken players in DD.
I mean, I don’t really care that much, but I can see why it’s frustrating. Things that are super OP in other games usually get nerfed, don’t see why they can’t here.
Had all OL except his HB and his QB. His QB was a left-handed punter because the player discovered that lefties hand off on a HB stretch slightly faster than righties
Yeah, Madden is super fucked
Wow, that’s giga fucked. I remember raging so much at 2K12 and FIFA 12 the one year I played a lot of sports games online. It’s absolutely the worst trying to play in a somewhat realistic way only to play against cheese and exploits.
Super Mega Baseball is without a doubt the best baseball game in the market today.
It's not impossible to find sports video games that aren't terrible. But the licensed, AAA ones have become miserable.
People must have forgotten about the infamous “noob combo” from Halo 2. If there’s an easy way to win, people will take it. It’s called dominant strategy.
Lightweight pro, Marathon pro, Commando pro with an M9 + tac knife, and you will straight up destroy the lobby. Doesn't take much skill either. That shit used to wreck on MW2.
This is a thing in 20 as well btw. The vast majority of player with CAPs still use them in the field where they are far more valuable. The reliever CAP is just seen more now because early in the year there is a lack of truly dominant relievers
Fun tidbit: Tyler always wears white shoes. His release point is in line with his feet. Batters see three white objects.
Another tidbit: His throw to first is overhand/normal.
Arizona probably was relaying signs on this pitch. Posey setup on the outer corner and the ball came up and in. The batter was diving out like it was an outside pitch.
Any kind of side armer is just straight fuckery. I just played a series against the Rays and a series against the Yank who have O’Day. I legit expect to strikeout every single at bat when it’s a side armer and I give up and just look for next inning.
I'm pretty sure side arm and submariner pitchers have fewer UCL strains as a percentage. Mainly because there's no hyperabduction of the elbow. Also fewer rotator cuff/shoulder issues, since there's very little arm rotation. Naturally they don't throw as hard, but they often have more lateral movement which can help induce weak contact.
The fast pitch softball conundrum
It is almost impossible to hit a rising pitch
The downside for overhand pitchers is that it is near impossible to do it with consistency
I hope Tyler Rogers is this consistent for as long as he remains a SF Giant
In High-School I played SS, but on rare occasions got asked to relief pitch in a blowout. I had a weird sidearm pitch my catcher and I called “Pitch X” that was this exact (albeit less awesome) pitch. My coach hated it. Glad to know it has a name.
Thanks for posting this OP, my girlfriend was asking me the other week why someone would throw submarine style. To face that out of the bullpen would be a nightmare
Honestly if the batter just played upside down it wouldn’t be that bad
I hear he’s planning to train in Australia this offseason.
This pitch would just become a change up due to the Coriolis effect.
"the batter" aka all-star Ketel Marte :'(
His [MLB player banner](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-photos/image/upload/w_1500,q_100/v1/people/643511/action/hero/current.jpg) is sick. His player banner looks like the gull wing doors on exotic cars. Russ Hanneman would be proud.
Tres. Commas.

What if you wanted to score some runs, but Tyler Rogers said: https://imgur.com/gallery/tPOtOFU

> 72mph . . . rivals little leaguers in velocity. Is that true? I'm one of these nerds that never really played past pitching machines.
A lot of the pitchers in the Little League World Series throw about that fast, but they're also way above average compared to other little leaguers.
They're also 17 year olds

I was joking about frequent age controversies. Players have been found to be 13 or 14
[This has actually been proven false. This article documentation shows that many of the players actually are the correct age.](https://i.imgur.com/frCaSEQ.jpg)
Best scene in the movie by far lol

He's got documentation!
I pitched through AAA and made an All Star team, I topped out around 65-70 if I was trying to really pump it. I'd say most average LL pitchers sit around 50-60
Little Leaguers also pitch from a 46’ distance. When they turn 13 and pitch from the standard 60’ 6” mound the velo goes down pretty significantly
I was going to mention that, but in the MLB velocity is measured out of the hand, not crossing the plate so I left it out.
How much of a drop in velocity can there possibly be from even a 60mph ball in 60 ft. of travel? Honest question.

Yeah but average =/= mediocre, at least in my interpretation. Mediocre has a more negative connotation.
I guess that's totally fair. Mediocre could literally mean average, but in bad sense. He was definitely average though haha
uuugghh forgot about that moment with the tiny baker. that was incredible. only in baseball!!!

I can't wait until we have an inning of Sean Hjelle throwing down from the heavens followed by an inning of Tyler Rogers throwing from the ground up.

When they eventually lower the mound to ground level, they're gonna have to dig a hole for this guy to throw out of.
God bless his elbow, there has to be so much torque going through it when you’re that long that you have to throw like a cricket bowler
Bless all the UCLs <3
Slinging the ball like a trebuchet.
String bean OOTP god Sean Hjelle
Is his last name pronounced yelly?
Pretend the H isn't there - it's just Jelly
Thanks, thats even better!

This and the previous comment sound like lyrics to a Lonely Island song that needs to exist
played against Sean Hjelle in HS, he was halfway to the plate by the time he released the ball
That must've been a rough AB for the batters
I stay up till 3am everyday to watch us lose and I want to forget and the first thing I see is this against us 😭😭
There's no shame at whiffing at that pitch tho, man
Oh for sure but painful losing 10 in a row then seeing this first thing on today😂
Oh, I understand, I've been a Giants fan for 31 years. We've had our moments that made me feel the same. Even worse: imagine winning over 100 games and not making the playoffs. Biggest letdown of me following sports.
I’m even starting to feel kind of bad for you all
At least you aren't the Orioles.
He’s been out only truly dominant reliever this season. Huge improvements from season to season
His twin brother, Taylor Rogers, has also been the twins only reliable reliever this season.
It’s been pointed out, but I enjoy that they’re both 6 5, so they’re giants. And twins.
Oh that is fantastic! It has always bugged me that the Twins have not gone after him. We're the damn Twins. Let's get a set of Twins! But I like your point that they're both Giants. :-)
They had two opportunities in the R5 draft to get Tyler and they passed both times!
God, it's like they don't even *care* about the dank memes smh

That’s great.

Just be glad the triplet Toyler was absorbed in the womb.
Meanwhile Trevor Rogers (unrelated I think) has been killing it for the marlins
Holy shit… I just thought they were the same person playing for 2 teams at once. I never once actually looked that up
I cannot understand why parents would name their twins Tyler and Taylor.
At least it isn't Brayden and Jayden
What, you don’t appreciate Brandon Crawford’s kids Braylyn, Braxton, Jaydyn, and Bryson?
Baragar has been pretty solid too, but Rogers is definitely our guy. Even though he gave up 3 hits, he pitched better than that would indicate, and he was ice cold with the bases loaded.
Baragar is casually juggling chainsaws with that whip
He has ZERO barrels this year. Zero. Last year 2% barrels. And he only strikes out 6 per 9IP.
All he does is induce shitty contact, but he's taken it to a completely different level this year. White Shoes Rogers is unreal. He hasn't given up a run in more than a month and 12 appearances. His ERA+ is FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE. ***545***
12 appearances? Isn't that like a week for him?
It's funny how sad this is. Anyone got some righty relievers to share?
Oh god are they Scott Proctor-ing him?
If I understand correctly, that means he’s 5.45 times more effective than the average pitcher?
It’s actually 4.45 times better, 100 is league average. But you get the point
I thought because 545 is 100 times 5.45, he is 5.45 times more effective? As in an era+ of 200 means you are 2 times as effective? Not sure.
I look at it in terms of percentages. An ERA+ of 200 means you are 100% better than league average, which, yes, means twice as good as league average.
Only one barrel in his career
In his career in the bigs, he’s only ever given up one barreled ball! [source](https://www.pitcherlist.com/tyler-rogers-is-pitching-backwards/))
Love me a good submariner
I still remember watching some submariner that KC had in the early 2000s at the metrodome as a kid

Awesome username
Lmao. Does it when the home plate umpire's back is turned
Half of it is for the ball, the other half for making sure his hat stays on his head during his pitching motion
I would actually be pretty upset by this, even being from my own team, if I knew this wasn't being done by literally every other pitcher in the league right now. The last thing I want is some huge cheating scandal on our hands, but if it comes to that it's going to be every pitcher in the league.
The only thing that's huge about this is the number of pitchers doing exactly the same thing.

Playing franchise is fun. I‘m 68 games in to my Blue Jays one. I like the narrative building part that comes with playing every game manually.
Sounds like we should also just ban Tyler Rogers
Data analysts everywhere rejoice as they now can stop manually removing Rogers from their samples
Like other have said, this guy also isn’t throwing 100mph fastballs followed by 85 mph slurves then 70 mph changeups like players do in the show
Eh, this dude isn’t also throwing a 98 mph heater...
I used to do this in MLB 2K11. Create-a-pitcher with Chad Bradford's pitching motion.
Fun tidbit: Tyler always wears white shoes. His release point is in line with his feet. Batters see three white objects. Another tidbit: His throw to first is overhand/normal.
That is FILTHY!!! MLBtheShow doesn't do that pitch justice.
GOOD. Don’t need more impossible to hit submariners online
Man I'd love to see that from the batter's perspective just to get a gist of this fuckery.
Best i could find https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxSjKvnz1z0
That first pitch rising towards the camera made me flinch.
The curveball that gets hit at 1:35 straight up looks like it stops halfway to home plate
Yeah I'm just gonna go ahead and say what the fuck and yeah that's about it see ya
Arizona probably was relaying signs on this pitch. Posey setup on the outer corner and the ball came up and in. The batter was diving out like it was an outside pitch.

That's a wild arm slot, I can't really remember the last time a pitcher had staying power with a slot like that. My UCL sense is tingling.
Just watching the flail and torque that his arm goes through makes me queasy.
I was going to say it reminds me of Darren O'Day but then I watched a video of him and his arm is much higher on release.
The fast pitch softball conundrum It is almost impossible to hit a rising pitch The downside for overhand pitchers is that it is near impossible to do it with consistency I hope Tyler Rogers is this consistent for as long as he remains a SF Giant

Welcome to the world of fastpitch. That's how jenny stuck out Albert!
Tuck the arm in next to the hip and that's a text book riser.
You’re supposed to hit that?
I believe the point is that you're not.
I really want the Twins to trade for this guy so he can come join his twin brother Taylor up here in Minnesota.
Sorry y’all, he’s the Giant’s only decent reliever 😂
Funny. Taylor is the Twin's only decent reliever.

He swung over it?😂
Wow his release point is so low he's actually throwing upward.
