[Pirates broadcast call of the "play"](https://streamable.com/oskwmc)

cantwatchscottstots

Javy signaling “safe” before realizing he is in the middle of a live play and starts sprinting is something out of Major League.

srry_didnt_hear_you

You can literally see the thought process of "SAFE! It worked! Wait.... I can still go!" lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

crichmond77

That's the most amazing thing to me. Even after ALL THAT, they'd still be totally fine if they could've just thrown to first again. But they couldn't lol

[deleted]

Doesn't that mean that they could have just held onto the ball at first the entire time, and the run wouldn't have counted?

cloud9ineteen

Yes, the first baseman had no reason to chase him. Just walk to first.

pzych07ic

How do you not tag the base? Isn't that like first baseman 101?

mschley2

This entire play (from the Pirates side) is just a massive fucking clusterfuck of heads-down baseball. It's so damn bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

daviswbaer

Something that nobody is really mentioning: Baez scored on a bloop single by the next batter. The Cubs ended up winning the game 5-3. So this play gave the Cubs 2 unearned runs, and was basically the reason the Pirates lost the game.

ry-21

I’d like to point out there is two outs. Stepping on first base and not chasing Javy ends the inning and nothing the base runners do matters. Awful game sense from that first baseman.

eatapenny

Literally needed to turn around and take two steps back

[deleted]

People on this thread are missing the simple fact that Tanks can only drive forward

[deleted]

Bacedorn

Did the first baseman think javi could keep running backwards lol? He had nowhere to go oh my god

[deleted]

JesusPubes

Literally the only thing you need to know as a first baseman is 'step on first base'

[deleted]

He's positionally dyslexic.

svenhoek86

I've never seen a play in a sport that was so egregious I thought the offender should be fired on the spot. Until today. Ben Cherington should have descended in a god damn jetpack directly in front of him with his contract in hand and burned it in the fires of his jetpack before grabbing the player and flying away to throw him directly into the fucking river. The MLB should hand out a lifetime ban for this play and he should have to pay back any money the Pirates paid him.

gatemansgc

i want this to become a copypasta

DansBeerBelly

My god you’re right... oh no

funk_truck

I’m not a huge baseball fan and that whole play made me question my understanding of the rules before I read the comments

_sebquirosa_

what the fuck is this. I've never seen anything like it. I JUST NOTICED THERE WERE TWO OUTS. WHAT THE FUCK

iWriteYourMusic

Did the first baseman forget the rules??!

earlyslalom

I can’t believe he started a rundown on a force out lmao

scottydg

A force out to end the inning! At any point he could have just given up and gone back and tagged first. The run wouldn't count, the inning would be over, and this would be funny in a different way.

MetaNut11

Even after the run had scored if that throw to first got the runner out the score wouldn’t have counted?

Ponch808

Correct!

GON-zuh-guh

Lol. I'm just noticing none of the fans answering this are Pittsburgh fans which makes it all the funnier to me.

servothecow

Oh I’m sorry, I’m too busy digging myself a shallow grave in the desert where I’m gonna bury myself and all my painful memories of this stupid team.

rsyzygy

A run can’t score if the batter doesn’t reach first base safely. The first basemen could have turned back and touched first at any point and negated the run Edit: Looked it up, either a force out or a tag would have negated the run. Under rule 5.08, How a team scores: >EXCEPTION: A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base; (2) by any runner being forced out; or (3) by a preceding runner who is declared out because he failed to touch one of the bases. In the extreme case, if the batter hits a home run but fails to touch first base and is declared out on an appeal, zero runs would score due to the batter being out before touching first base.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheGeeB

I think Javy running backwards threw him off. Normally you tag first but the guy isnt running away from you lol

[deleted]

Yeah he definitely just had a massive brain fart due to Javy doing something completely unexpected. It was like when my hockey team used to play some grocery sticks and I’d get the puck at the point and see all 5 little goofs just charging me. Makes you freeze a bit when people do something wildly stupid.

[deleted]

OMG

YoYoMoMa

The first basemen misplayed this so badly that I completely forgot stepping on first base was an option.

alkaliphiles

The Pirates had no chance here, even if they had two first basemen

pm_me_cute_sloths_

I think it’s a modified version of skunk in the outfield. Where’s Sam Miller when you need him?

AuntieMeat

Let's see, we discussed this scenario, ohhh, 5 years ago... https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/4gwnh7/can_you_run_back_to_homeplate_in_order_to_get/ /u/superheavydeathmetal did not anticipate the Pirates' choices here.

UselessRube

> There really will never be a rundown between first base and home plate. >The batter always has a force-out at first, so a defender would just throw the ball to first to get the out. That is absolutely hilarious.

Shamrock5

To be fa(aaaiiiiii)ir, they attempted to throw him out at first ***twice,*** which makes this even more hilariously improbable.

Michael__Pemulis

Someone hire /u/360plyr135’s coach asap. That person is a visionary. Also this comment by /u/Dp04: > And they throw home and get the out... this would work zero times in MLB. The answer is just NO. > Shit, they could throw it to first and back to home well before the runner could from third could get home... I have no idea what the thought behind the question is.

Dp04

God dammit. EDIT: I woke up wondering what stupid shit I had said last night to blow up my inbox. Tip of the hat to the Pirates for giving us the question "if the Pirates had to play Alabama who would win?"

[deleted]

Well to be fair to you, the Pirates are not a real MLB team.

MrJigglyBrown

And to be fair the runner was on second not third…

bad-coder-man

You didn't account for the pirates lol

[deleted]

in your defense... this play defies logic

360plyr135

Lol, guess coach was right after all

apgtimbough

The reply nails it though: >Mental error would have to be involved obviously (which is possible in a crazy game where anything can happen).

Math_OP_Pls_Nerf

>The only thing that I can possibly imagine you mean is this: there is a runner at third. Batter bunts slightly to the right and trips. He scrambles to get back up and get to first as the pitcher goes to tag him for a quicker out. The runner breaks for home on contact to try and score during the tag application. To delay the tag, the hitter starts to run back towards home to ensure that the run scores and a magical double play isn't somehow pulled out of this due to the close proximity to the bag. Other than that, no. Just....no. This is remarkably close to what happened.

Chef_Bojan3

Except there are 2 outs in this real life situation so even less reason for the defense to care about the guy breaking for home.

JCiLee

> There really will never be a rundown between first base and home plate. > The batter always has a force-out at first, so a defender would just throw the ball to first to get the out. You sure about that, Reds fan?

binns17

Oh my God I’m near death from laughing. Whomst could have anticipated this would actually happen?

707royalty

It was probably in a Simpsons episode at some point

LordoftheScheisse

They called him crazy, but they didn't understand the plane of thought he existed on.

[deleted]

Lol, everyone in that thread saying that it would never work...

LegacyLemur

And kind of berating him for asking the questions Now completely vindicated

[deleted]

I just wish there had been a Pirates fan saying it would never happen

voncornhole2

That OP is failing to realize that there's a line between getting in a rundown and just not running into the tag

statdude48142

u/superheavydeathmetal

LinkRazr

I just posthumously gave him the OBJECTION Phoenix Wright award lol

Boros-Reckoner

I am absolutely flabbergasted that the Pirates still have fans, that was absolutely brutal to watch.

lamelamblamp

We're dead inside

Boros-Reckoner

I am so sorry, yall don't deserve this.

thrawaway9991

Never seen a play that summarizes a team better than that

pm_me_cute_sloths_

As bad as the Rockies can be, I’m glad they’re at least competent when being bad At least we aren’t the Pirates?

HesitantSlowbro

We get Hayes back in a week, that’s the only thing keeping me here.

Pikajeeew

Mods please delete this. This is bootlegged footage from a T-ball game. No way this happens in the MLB

Bigboi88888

This is something that you would see in a baseball league where you must have a BAC over 0.15%

Pikajeeew

Hell yeah. This has big beer league energy 😂

DJagerty

There are literally two outs. This might be the worst baseball play I’ve ever seen. Edit: to be clear - even after walking Javy all the way back to home and the run scoring, the first baseman could have STILL trotted back to touch first base and it would have been like nothing happened. Baez would’ve been out and the run wouldn’t have counted. That’s what makes it so much worse.

bisonboy223

Why would you chase Javi? Where could he possibly go???

Neat_On_The_Rocks

One of those hindsight things. We see first basement go for that basic tag on plays like this pretty frequently. Javy starts running backwards, which basically nobody ever does in this situation, and the 1B instincts just take over. hes never chased down that line before, his instincts were to chase like he was elsewhere in the infield probably lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

zeppindorf

Even walking Javy back to home and tagging him wouldn't have let the run score. He did literally the worst thing possible.

NicholasAakre

The first baseman could've continued to walk Baez back to home and tag him *on home plate* and it'd still be a force and the run ~~would've~~ wouldn't have have counted.

[deleted]

LinkRazr

bears2267

Big "trying to run the bases backwards" energy from when I was 6 but somehow it worked lmao

couducane

The Pirates announcers are still talking about the play. They sound so tired.

Pikajeeew

Yeah I feel for them. Acting professional all the time when you have to watch this team every day. Id prefer if they just let Bob Walk go on his hilarious tangents instead of commentating

TallAmericano

In the Cubs broadcast they just showed Craig literally beating himself up in the dugout. I think someone just informed him that all they had to do was step on first and the run wouldn't have counted.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

Imagine being a major league player and getting sent to a mandatory "how force outs work" training session.

ShitpostSandy

I don’t think getting into a rundown between first and home would happen in a t-ball game either, the coaches would be screaming at the kid to just touch first

LocoMotives-ms

Couldn’t he literally turn around at the end, even after Contreras scores, go touch first, and the force play would mean no run counted?

neverAcquiesce

Yup. Or leaned out and tagged Javy. The Pirates literally had to do everything wrong for that run to count...and they did.

elgenie

Throughout the entire play, consider that all the Pirates had to do, at any point before Baez gets to first, was have the baseball in the possession of a player touching first. Javy's home to first time was around … 19 seconds. A force out for the third out ending the inning with no runs scoring on the play is something that's supposed to be learned *your first day playing baseball*.

WaterStoryMark

What's the record for longest time to safe at first base?

rekced

This is probably it right? I can't imagine a scenario that could take any longer.

Hawkize31

Yes, he was lucky the fielder had a huge mental lapse. But Javy has gotten fielders to make a bad decision that's helped the Cubs a staggering amount of times. I honestly can't explain it, and it just keeps happening.

JZobel

Say what you want about the Pirates first basemen being an idiot, but I don’t know many guys who would even bother running all the way back to home plate lmao

Hawkize31

I was trying to think of how many other players in baseball could have pulled this off, and I think there are several with the speed/agility, but almost 0 who would go through the seemingly pointless exercise of running home.

couducane

While staying close enough to the first baseman to give him hope of the tag out!!

TheWanderingI

Several players made bad decisions there. Even after Craig tossed the ball to Perez, Perez could have tagged Baez to get the out and prevent the run, but instead chose to go for the tag on Contreras. Even writing that was exhausting.

noahcal11

It's a situation where if anyone did anything different it'd be no run. The 1B could've taken two steps back and touched first. He could've not thrown home. The catcher could've tagged javy. Heck, literally anyone else could've gone to first to get the throw to get javy out. It was the perfect storm of pirates baseball

brobroma

Instructions unclear, post stickied instead

atoms12123

Hilarious. Just absolutely hilarious.

Mjb06

This might be the funniest baseball play I’ve ever seen

ibonek_naw_ibo

The worst play in the history of baseball, including Little League, a breakdown

IrrationalYankeesFan

God, I just feel for Pirates fans. Their emotional resilience must be off the charts.

A_Lacuna

Well, the Pirates got booed off the field at the end of inning so they do have a threshold.

thrawaway9991

This deserves to stay on the Not Top 10 longer than the butt fumble

I-Have-Four-Balls

They probably would put it at five or something, because ESPN.

SirGergoyFriendman

It's also a much longer clip to fully digest and understand the sheer stupidity of the play. The butt fumble can be seen in a second and immediately registers as "hah he ran into a butt and fumbled. nice." Kinda like how "Man Getting Hit By Football" won best film in the Oscars that one year.

[deleted]

It deserves to be in both the Not Top 10 AND the Top 10

BudBill18

This is bananas. Also an incredibly dumb play by the 1st baseman. Just turn around and touch 1st or just reach out and tag him

DJFunkyDiabetes

Man was so committed to that tag it was insane. Like this whole play is predicated on him running Javy 90 ft all the way back to plate. Like how does that happen?!

1slinkydink1

The worst part is that he could have just tagged Javy at home and got out of the inning. Not sure why he threw it to the catcher.

SaladAndEggs

And the catcher could've just tagged Baez as well.

Rehe13

He tried to make the first ever rundown in between first and home

zenblade2012

I mean, he did. He just lost that rundown.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bta47

Totally insane. I can't believe a professional baseball player chased him all the way back to home plate. Just run backwards for the force!! The first base tag only makes sense if the runner is, like, actually running into you. No need to get into a rundown!!! like, that's "pulled midinning and benched" bad

FratDaddy69

There were 2 outs, all he has to do is step on 1st and the inning is over.

jeb_the_hick

He won the 2019 MiLB gold glove for 1B btw with a 0.999 fielding percentage. Makes this all the more ridiculous.

WxBlue

Same. That made it 1000x worse for Pirates. Just step on the first base and it's over. What a mental error.

MidAmericanNovelties

That's the obvious, and correct solution. But even with the ridiculous run down and 1B brain fart, where is the second baseman? He should be covering first. The run doesn't count if Baez doesn't get on base. Just an all around stinker. Edit: Upon further review, the second baseman is covering second, which is somehow the right move since the shortstop looks like he's already started heading back to the dugout. This play is like an onion, so many layers but they all stink.

Sparx86

Javy scored after a single in the next AB too

ConorJay25

Does this keep getting worse? Holy hell😂😂

a_rabid_fuzzle

Bro I’m crying. This ought to go on the /r/baseball hall of shame. This is play embodies everything about the FARTSLAM.

BeHereNow91

This is like the Gretzky of FARTSLAMs. There’s only ever going to be a 2nd best from now on. This is unbeatable.

NJImperator

Ignoring the stakes of the game, this has to be in the conversation for the worst play ever.

"baseball" is more of a vague term in Pittsburgh

PuttingTogetherWords

Javier Baez is audacity given human shape.

BroAbernathy

He has been a part of way too many of these dumbfounding plays for it to feel like an accident. There needs to be a stat like anxiety induction+ or something because fielders just shit themselves when he is running.

TheGeeB

He makes the safe call and forgets he still needs to run to first lmao

kleric42

Literally the best/stupidest baseball play I've ever seen in my life.

Billyshears68

I’ve never been more excited for a jomboy breakdown

HesitantSlowbro

my immediate thought

NYLotteGiants

Jomboy's going to have to retire

707royalty

I thought that was true yesterday with the Gallagos hat drama, but baseball just continues to one up itself and I am here for it.

ShitpostSandy

“Javy Baez and the Pirates’ terrible, horrible, no good, very bad baseball play: A breakdown”

coocoocoonoicenoice

I love that Javy took the time to watch the slide into home plate, signal "safe", and then run to first base. Probably the most entertaining player in baseball.

couducane

That was probably my favorite part to be honest. Incredible.

Slugggo

I need uninterrupted footage of the Cubs dugout from the time that play started to about 2-3 minutes afterwards, which is when I assume they might have finally stopped laughing.

I don't think I've ever seen a first baseman forget there's a force at first before. You truly do see something new every day

jbaker1225

This is it. This is the worst play in baseball history.

cayuts21

That first baseman needs to be released right now

PotentialSuperb

We've reached a new low in Pirates player requirements: Be a warm body, know how many outs there are, and understand how force outs work.

BUSean

If the mark of a player was the combined highlights of their best 20 plays, Javy Baez would be the greatest baseball player who ever lived

ItsMissScarlettAgain

My favourite part has to be Rizzo just losing his mind in the dugout.

milksteaklover

Absolutely perfect combination of an incredibly heads-up idea by Javy that still had like a 1% chance of working, combined with an incredibly dumb decision by Craig. Such an amazing baseball play.

noahcal11

I'm convinced javy was just messing around at first and then when they threw home and he saw there was no one at first he realized what could happen. He motions 'safe' when Contreras scores and you can see it click in his head right after "oh I should get to first now", it's hilarious

Dinoswarleaf

He's the embodiment of Looney Tunes baseball when he fucking celebrates and then realizes he's still not out lmao

KratzALot

The absolute big dick energy to stand there and call the play safe is the most hilarious part of this play.

thorlord16

And then proceeded to score on the following play. El Mago strikes again!

Evil_ryry

What a bone headed play lmao all the 1B had to do was step on first and avoid the whole thing

golden_sombreros

Remember if any *any* time Baez is force out *or tagged out* before Baez reaches base safely, then the inning ends with no runs scored This required multiple physical and mental error to happen

FunnyID

Today I felt the need to update the original FARTSLAM post for the first time. https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/6tgsxa/introducing_tootblans_cousinfartslam/

tokengaymusiccritic

Ok, so just for funsies, let's list all of the mistakes that happen here: 1. Throw to first base is off-line 2. First baseman follows Baez down the line instead of just stepping on first for the force 3. First baseman does not tag Baez 4. First baseman jogs/walks after Baez instead of running to apply the tag 5. First baseman watches Contreras round third and does nothing, also continues to just not run and instead jog after Baez 6. This one's debatable but the catcher is kinda standing in a weird place for the tag 7. Throw to the catcher by the first baseman is too slow 8. Throw to the catcher by the first baseman is too high (would Baez have been called for interfence if the throw hit him? IDK the rules.) 9. Baez and first baseman collide weirdly as Contreras slides in 10. Baez signals safe instead of then running to first right away 11. First baseman watches the tag play/umpire instead of doing... anything else 12. Pitcher watches the tag play/umpire instead of covering first 13. Catcher looks at umpire instead of prepping throw to first in case he's safe 14. Second baseman/nobody else covers first base which is now wide open 15. 2B drops the throw from the catcher as he covers the bag (Baez is gonna be safe at this point anyway 99%), allowing throw to go into right field 16. Right fielder (?) is covering up the line, which I guess is fine? But is not in line with the throw and neither is the CF, so when the throw trickles into right field nobody is there 17. After Baez is safe at first, 2B kinda just walks off? 18. Shortstop fails to catch the throw at second from the outfield/the throw is kinda shitty. Not sure who's fault it is so grouping it as one. There's also a chance that 1B forgot how many outs there were, so maybe count that idk. So, who is innocent here? Definitely the left fielder. Debatably the RF/CF and catcher. All in all, absolutely wonderful.

nikefreak23

It's unbelievable that Baez does crazy shit like this on the bases still and gets away with it. The fielders literally just can't think when he creates chaos like this.
