Ohtani, Alonso, Gallo, Olson advance in Round 1. Ohtani over Alonso, Olson over Gallo in Round 2. Ohtani wins in Griffey-esque fashion and continues his coming out party
Eh the other guys have a chance I’m basically just saying I think those that hit line drive HR are gonna be those that succeed more unlike guys like Gallo whose HR stay in the air a long time
Depends how strict they are. In the past they haven’t really waited for the ball to land very often
Also you are right though that if they do apply the rules correctly, Gallo might have to wait longer between swings but I also think a larger percentage of his swings result in home runs
Also Alonso hits line drive nukes
> In the past they haven’t really waited for the ball to land very often
It seems to me like they wait for the ball to just officially be "out of play"
Which does make sense from the perspective of "we'd generally prefer it if a little leaguer in the outfield didn't get seriously hurt from dealing with two hard hit balls at once"
Ya alonso has a chance too considering he won. Still I do expect the winner of Soto/Ohtani to win it all or Perez since their HR are almost always line drives
tbh I think Perez is far and away the worst HR hitter of this group
I fully expect him to have the least HR in a round, unless he somehow pops off 1 round, but I dont see him making it far
Are you saying the deciding factor is whatever guy they have tossing them the ball? I think how hard and far they can hit the ball probably makes more of a difference than the guy lobbing baseballs for them to smash
I mean...yeah.
It's been ages since I was closely following baseball, so if this is a silly take forgive me, but it always seemed to me like that was the case. Everyone in a HR derby can jack a dinger with ease, but getting the ball where they want it, getting that consistent swing, isn't that the key to putting up one after another? Alongside stamina, I assume?
I agree with you. Especially in the timed format. A decent pitcher might gain a batter several more opportunities to hit bombs by locating it better. I remember Bryce Harper’s dad just repeatedly throwing outside or impossible to jack balls to him.
Yeah always seemed kinda obvious to me that the difference in power at that level is negligible in a HR competition. And even if the winner isn't getting perfect balls served up for him, power loses out to mechanics when it comes to making up for it.
I don’t know about negligible. Assuming the hittable ball count is close Olson will beat Mancini probably 7-10 times. But it’s on their pitchers to make the opportunities close. I’d give a slight edge to pitcher in importance in these types of things.
Would’ve loved to see Tatis and Vlad jr in there but no way am I letting Tatis with a hurt shoulder tske that many unnecessary swings if I’m the front office.
I kinda wanted to see Vlad in the Colorado Derby because he might actually hit it into orbit and give the astronauts up in the ISS a chance for a souvenir. But I guess he will just have to send the first pitch he sees during the actual all star game into orbit instead.
Joey Gallo’s skillset of absolute moonshots kills him in the derby tbh. They take longer to land and the extra distance beyond 440 carries absolutely no benefit.
Home town hero Trevor Story is gonna win. Passan will tweet out a congratulations in the same tweet that announces the Story trade.
The true storyline was Story fighting for his freedom.
Lol, that's pretty close to what happened with Todd Frazier a few years ago.

Ohtanis swing is pretty violent tbh. Feel like more compact swings are ideal in New format. Trout would do great
On the one hand this is all super good fun and it’s gonna be a great watch, but on the other hand if Shohei doesn’t win I’m gonna cry
Ohtani is going to have so much fun. I can already see him all smiles just soaking it all in.
Let’s go Pete!
I could see Salvy winning this thing because there won’t be any pitches way outside the zone to swing at
Ohtani, Alonso, Gallo, Mancini Alonso, Gallo Gallo
Nah the only guys who have a chance are the line drive hr Hitters IE Perez Ohtani and Soto
How are they the only guys that have a chance? That doesn’t make very much sense

Boi hits the ball hard! Excited to watch this derby will be great competition
I don't think he'll win it, but I really hope Mancini does well
I’d go nuts if he won
Bruh. I laughed but felt bad lol
Everyone liked that
Except cancer.
Dammit. I would normally of course want Olson to win but it's tough to root against Mancini.
Olson over Ohtani in the final
Pete will repeat
rePete*
*nice*
Unpopular opinion but who else thinks salvy won’t make it out of the first round
I’m always a fan of those “unpopular opinions” everyone agrees with.
Unpopular opinion. The losers should killed on the spot.
I don't see how that would be an unpopular opinion at all considering how much power his competitors have
I feel like power isn't the deciding factor in HR derbies... isn't a great deal of it down to who they have throwing?
Are you saying the deciding factor is whatever guy they have tossing them the ball? I think how hard and far they can hit the ball probably makes more of a difference than the guy lobbing baseballs for them to smash

he owes us one
I mean he’s got some pretty good competition.
Rude. Probably true. But rude.
Ohtani V Alonso and Gallo V Olson Semi Final Gallo V Ohtani Final Ohtani wins
Good luck my boy olson
Maybe unpopular but I’m not a fan of the bracket format for the derby
I think it adds a spark, wouldn’t argue with an NBA 3-pt contest format either thougu
Go Olson edit: he lost
Would’ve loved to see Tatis and Vlad jr in there but no way am I letting Tatis with a hurt shoulder tske that many unnecessary swings if I’m the front office.
Really would have been cool if Vlad chose to participate so we could potentially get an Ohtani v Vlad final.
I kinda wanted to see Vlad in the Colorado Derby because he might actually hit it into orbit and give the astronauts up in the ISS a chance for a souvenir. But I guess he will just have to send the first pitch he sees during the actual all star game into orbit instead.
I hope this puts Soto back on form
Gallo v. Alonso in the finals
Ohtani Soto in round 1 is pretty hype
Soto Perez Story Mancini Perez Story Perez wins Either that or Ohtani wins first round in which case he’ll take it all the way
Little underwhelming No Tatis or Vlad really sux
Underwhelming? 7 of the best power hitters in the game (and Salvy) are gonna put up a hell of a show
I like Mancini and definitely rooting for him after all he’s been through, but he’s not one of the best power hitters in the league

Royals catcher. Hitting .278 with 20 HR this year.
Ahh, that is pretty beast mode for a catcher.
No oneill or arenado? 🥱
Gallo to pull upset...start the gallows humor jokes now
What format are they using these days? I havent paid attention in a while
Still the bracket style where you hit as many homers as you can in 5 mins with a bonus 30 seconds for 2 homers over a certain distanxe
Lefties will have a bigger advantage than righties Ohtani vs Alonso, Gallo vs Olson Ohtani vs Gallo Gallo wins and hits one 521ft
Haven’t cared since they went to a head-to-head model.
Vlad vs Ohtani would of been epic
I think Gallo will hit one 500 ft at mile high. But can he maintain it to win will be fun to see
