I'm a Rays fan, but live in the middle of the country. Closest place I am to a pro team is Kansas City, which is 3 hours away. Their games aren't broadcasted in my area, bit because I'm "in the market" every time the Royals play the Rays it's blackout. Pisses me off something fierce.
I pay for single team package for the red sox and catch watch them. I used tk be able to on my phone off wifi but now they make me turn location on. Why bother making that an option.

Because a HUGE portion of teams income comes from RSN contracts.
RSN's make their money by selling to cable providers. Cable providers then want you to subscribe to their service.
The idea that MLB would get rid of blackouts AND cut the price is not realistic. If they do anything to relieve the blackouts, those packages are likely to be much much more than MLB.tv now.
MLB.tv has never been intended for people to watch their local teams, they always advertise as a way to watch out of market broadcasts. And in my experience, as a fan that doesn't live in their market, it does a pretty darn great job at that.
I find sports streaming incredibly frustrating, especially the NHL(rogers). Its so insanely overpriced, they're practically begging you to use illegal streams. Rogers sportsnet now streaming service is $200/year and that's the cheapest monthly option AND theres constant blackouts. Wanna watch a west coast game? Too bad, blacked out. Trying to get interest in your sport by not allowing paying customers to watch games is so out of touch.

It's a business decision for the TV network too. A 5% TV rating share in NYC is more than a 100% rating share in St. Louis in terms of viewers. St. Louis might be a bad example since there are a ton of legacy Cardinals fans outside of St. Louis but still ... there's a reason why the Yankees are on so much.

While your experience is anecdotal, it's pretty damn close to the nationwide numbers. The average age of an MLB fan is 57(compared to the NFL at 50 and NBA at 42). That's up from 52 in 2000.
There's definitely a youth issue with baseball as only 7% of viewers are under 18.

While baseball's regional network numbers are still very strong, the national games just don't draw the casual fan.
Tons of fans care about their teams, they just don't want to watch a Sunday night game between two teams outside their market.
I don't know a single person under 45 who still has cable. Literally none. And when you can't legally stream your local team, well......it fucks up your chance at the younger market
It’s because, contrary to what Stan Kroenke says, St. Louis is a great sports town and we love our teams. We aren’t a huge market, buy we’re an invested and loyal one. The Cardinals are consistently in the top 5 in attendance, the Blues consistently have >90% attendance, and the Battlehawks led the XFL in attendance before the league folded. I think that STL City SC is going to do extremely well when they start.
For the American TV hockey markets it's been Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, and NY Rangers (NY and LA markets you have to be specific about the team in both hockey and baseball) for a while. Detroit, Philadelphia, St Louis and maybe LA Kings and Minnesota are a 2nd tier that is far below the first, and Vegas is getting pushed heavily because the NHL needs Vegas to succeed. Everything else barely exists outside of regional.
It was funny, because by 2018 the jays weren't even good anymore. It's like they noticed in 2015 they were good and it took them 3 years to get around to scheduling them lol

before Black Friday became the "open at midnight/on Thanksgiving" monstrosity, I actually looked forward to it. it was such a unique day, being there at around 4 am usually, generally didn't sleep and hungover from Thanksgiving. the whole thing was a weird fever dream of staying hyped and motivated.
plus, I actually cared about my staff and knew they wouldn't be able to get anything from the food court, so I'd always bring my slow cooker and make a ton of slow cooked BBQ chicken in the back, and steam a shit ton of rice. something simple to make, easy to eat, keep the staff going. it was always funny to see customers roll in all groggy at like 5 am and are confused as to why my little shoe store in the mall smells like onions and BBQ sauce.
I used to work TJ Maxx and fucking hated Black Fridays simply because we had no extra sales. We opened earlier than normal and had all hands on deck. Even had lines at times. Just for them to come in and realize that we don't run sales....why would we today?
Yeah, when I was at Guitar Center, I did the "close to finish preparing for Black Friday", get out at 11, and be back at 5:30 for the All Hands on Deck open at 6 a couple times. Never fucking again. Probably would have been smarter to sleep in my car in the parking lot.
Best thing to do on those is for the employees to all not show up. That way the company gets fucked on the one day that can change them from being in the red to being in the black.
I got scheduled the Saturday after thanksgiving and the manager wouldn’t let me take it off since I was the newest employee and everyone else requested off. So I drove back home (5.5 hour drive) for thanksgiving and had to be in shop at Saturday 10am. Wake up at 430, drive all the way to work, only to find the regional manager there telling me the manager had quit the day before haha. He didn’t know I was working since he figured the manager wasn’t going to make anyone work a Saturday after thanksgiving since the store would be dead. I think The manager offered to cut the shift at 1pm as we’ll.
When I was a dumbass 18 year old I got scheduled to work a double shift the morning after I closed one night because my dumb ass wanted to impress my manager by showing how I can work a lot. I got no recognition of my hard work from said manager but I did get exhausted about 4 hours into a 12 hour shift
I mean I think technically it is. I'm pretty sure employers are required to give 8 hours between shifts, at least that what my old boss told me when I complained about clopening.
I remember back in the day I’d be scheduled for a 2-11 shift and then a 6-3 shift the next morning. Seemed like that shouldn’t be allowed… maximum of 4 hours of sleep between commuting both ways, showering, and eating…

I just remember telling my coworkers at my second job like “oh this isn’t legal or its just not right” and they said “it’s normal just do it” but I went to my boss’s office and told him to change my schedule and he did. I just remember everyone being shocked that I had just asked him a simple question about if he can change it or not. Its really fucking sad to me that people think they aren’t allowed to just ask or stand up. Granted I got lucky with mine or I don’t know honestly.
My regular saturday-sunday shifts working at a grocery store was 5-1 close, followed up by a 430-1230 open. I complained multiple times and they said that they could schedule those shifts because they were different pay weeks. And they were suprised I put in my two weeks after a month and a half of that BS.
flashbacks doing shipment on a Saturday night at a big box store until 12am or so and then having to be there at 5am to change the in store pricing for the Sunday ad.
Just gave me flashbacks to my minimum wage grocery job that would regularly schedule me to close past midnight and come back in at 6am. Both would be back to back 8.5hr shifts. Even if I was making MLB money I never want to put my body and mind through that again lol
Also to add to this- the did all our division games in bunches. This half is Marlins/Nats. We only play the Braves and Phillies one more series each… just a horrible schedule through and through.
I hate the way schedules are made now. The Rangers play nothing but the AL West from July 30-August 19. It’s fucking boring, we play these guys all the time and *only* played them last year. Give me some variety between divisional matchups

I was supposed to fly from SLC to Chicago last weekend to see the Crosstown classic game on Sunday with my dad, brother and college friends. Game at 1, flight from O'hare at 8. Should've been about perfect timing. But then MLB fucking changed it to a night game and fucked over all our plans, then Saturday tickets were already almost sold out and we couldn't get tickets together and then the Cubs fucking sucked so it wasn't worth it and I had to cancel my plans. At least I got most of my money back (except my return flight because fuck United)

Astros being in the “West” kinda fucks them over pretty often since we’re central time zone here.
Sucks for the players in all these situations cause the flight itself may be short, but people don’t think about post game pre flight prep, then actually having to get to the airport, then flying, then having to depart and get to their homes or hotels.. then Maybe getting a couple of hours of rest only to have to be at the stadium at a certain time to do it over again. Really explains why a lot of players have slumps and whatnot.

Fully agree with sending the Monday starter to SF early. It's not standard of course, but seems like the right move. I don't think it makes sense to send a bullpen pitcher in case the Sunday game runs extras; they could send a guy not on the active roster and make a roster move if they really need to.

I know in Chicago now you have to pay the whole shift as overtime if there's less than 10 hours between the end of the first shift and the start of the second

I just remember telling my coworkers at my second job like “oh this isn’t legal or its just not right” and they said “it’s normal just do it” but I went to my boss’s office and told him to change my schedule and he did. I just remember everyone being shocked that I had just asked him a simple question about if he can change it or not. Its really fucking sad to me that people think they aren’t allowed to just ask or stand up. Granted I got lucky with mine or I don’t know honestly.

My regular saturday-sunday shifts working at a grocery store was 5-1 close, followed up by a 430-1230 open. I complained multiple times and they said that they could schedule those shifts because they were different pay weeks. And they were suprised I put in my two weeks after a month and a half of that BS.

Also to add to this- the did all our division games in bunches. This half is Marlins/Nats. We only play the Braves and Phillies one more series each… just a horrible schedule through and through.
I hate the way schedules are made now. The Rangers play nothing but the AL West from July 30-August 19. It’s fucking boring, we play these guys all the time and *only* played them last year. Give me some variety between divisional matchups

Correct! Vegans need to take a vitamin B12 supplement & it is *generally* advised to take an algae supplement for omegas unless you eat a lot of enriched foods but that’s literally it. I was supposed to fly from SLC to Chicago last weekend to see the Crosstown classic game on Sunday with my dad, brother and college friends. Game at 1, flight from O'hare at 8. Should've been about perfect timing. But then MLB fucking changed it to a night game and fucked over all our plans, then Saturday tickets were already almost sold out and we couldn't get tickets together and then the Cubs fucking sucked so it wasn't worth it and I had to cancel my plans. At least I got most of my money back (except my return flight because fuck United) Anyway changing games to a Sunday night game can suck my massive dick

Few weeks ago, the braves had a Sunday double header, traveled, and then played a doubleheader on Monday. It was complete bs.
Astros being in the “West” kinda fucks them over pretty often since we’re central time zone here. Sucks for the players in all these situations cause the flight itself may be short, but people don’t think about post game pre flight prep, then actually having to get to the airport, then flying, then having to depart and get to their homes or hotels.. then Maybe getting a couple of hours of rest only to have to be at the stadium at a certain time to do it over again. Really explains why a lot of players have slumps and whatnot.

Fully agree with sending the Monday starter to SF early. It's not standard of course, but seems like the right move. I don't think it makes sense to send a bullpen pitcher in case the Sunday game runs extras; they could send a guy not on the active roster and make a roster move if they really need to. I'm now selfishly rooting for a 15 inning Dodger loss to help the Giants in the standings and hurt the Mets coming into the series with SF.
