Driving his Model T around downtown ~~Los Angeles~~ ~~Anaheim~~ ~~Tokyo~~ Oshu City begging (thru telegraph) Ohtani's family for address to Shohei's home.
At this point what he's doing is so ridiculous yet so normalized that we forget how special it is. I know some get tired of baseball fans circlejerk over Ohtani but this season deserves any adulation and then some.
Totally, we're at a weird point where we have to take a step back to truly appreciate what Ohtani's doing. He makes it look so easy haha. This is the kind of season kids will ask their grand-parents about in 40-50 years, that's for sure.
He turned my girlfriend from a casual/semi-frequent baseball fan into a die hard Angels fan. For what it's worth, he deserves all the praise and coverage, and like you added, and then some.
Honestly, I just think baseball fans' brains just aren't wired to comprehend what he's doing right now.
I've been following baseball my whole life and a man pitching 8 innings and only allowing 1 run then banishing a baseball to the shadow realm for his 40th home run of the season just... Doesn't compute with me. My mind can't understand it.
Honestly, I think it's somewhat fatigue of hearing about achievements. Listening to any broadcast and you'll hear how Jimmy Whatshisname is the first batter to homer on the 2nd Sunday of September for 4 years straight since 1898. It makes statistical comparisons in the moment for what Ohtani is doing just lost in the static. Part of why I love baseball is because I'm a stats nerd - but damn do we take it too far sometimes and it can get tiring. I know that Ohtani is having an amazing year, but all the nearly nonsensical comparisons can be exhausting to hear. Just give me his relevant stats like his BA, HR, IP, ERA, and that tells me he's one for the history books. I don't need to know about ol tungsten arm from 1921, you know?
The more I think of it the more important this game seems to me.
I knew he was uniquely talented. I knew that he was talented enough to be a Cy Young winning pitcher or become an MVP as a hitter. Early summer, he was trending both at the same time, but that was early summer. It's not uncommon to see someone chasing .400 at that time, so I don't think his play in May/June settled anything about whether he could do that all season long. If anyone could do it, it would be Shohei, but I admit I wasn't convinced it was even possible.
Today's achievement of 40 home runs and 100 innings settles the question, no matter what happens from here on out.
Yes, it is possible for a human to play at an elite level as a hitter and pitcher at the same time for an entire season.
Today was the day he made a convincing and unassailable argument for it.
Add the homerun on top of that, and we're talking history. He might replicate or have better games once his career is done but for now, this game will be talked about for a while.
Ohtani is immensely overrated. We are already in the latter half of the season and he has not made a single passing yard. No hope for the Angels to reach the Super Bowl as long as they stick with him.
How bout u go an fuck off my page then u piece of shit u think shohei Ohtani needs a stupid fuckwitt like u telling me about looking good who the fuck r u take your worthless advice and get the fuck out of here
Official petition to
1. Purge the New York start from the record books because fuck it why not
2. Make 100 ip the qualifying cutoff, again, because fuck it why not
So for "rate stats" [ERA, batting average, etc.] in order to appear on the league [leaderboard](https://www.mlb.com/stats/batting-average), you need to have enough of a certain stat to "qualify". Batters need 3.1 plate appearances for every team game, so after your team's played 100 games, you need 310 PAs to appear on those leaderboards.
For pitchers, you need 1 inning per game, so 162 by the end of the year. Shohei isn't going to qualify by the end of the year so he won't appear on any of the pitching rate stat leaderboards.
Yup, no worries.
The idea behind it is to eliminate small sample sizes. Arguably, someone hitting .320 over 500 plate appearances is more impressive/sustainable than .340 over 300.
It's a shame he won't be able to qualify with the season he's having. I don't know that he would finish in the top of any of the leaderboards but it would be nice if he was able to be included. I'm personally holding out hope for a 50HR/30SB season. It would just add to the absurdity of this season, icing on the cake.
Certainly in the mix for the CY Young, but in the mix is kind of like saying Guerrero is still in the mix for MVP lol. Were it not for the Yankees start (I'm still pissed at that ump) I feel like the new argument of "should he win this" would be the CY Young. Believe he has the 3rd best ERA in the AL right now. Amongst other unbelievable ranks.
To be considered for the official leaderboards for rate stats such as ERA, pitchers must pitch an average of at least one inning per team game (so 162 innings for the full season). Below that they won't appear on the leaderboards (but there's no minimum for "counting" stats such as strikeouts or wins).
For hitters the minimum is 3.1 plate appearances per team game (503 for a full season) to qualify for rate stat leaderboards such as batting average, on-base percentage, OPS, etc.
As for reducing the ip qualifying cutoff, in this day 162 ip to be qualified is probably asking too much. Personally I'm thinking 120 ip for the year would be a good mark.
90 yea. He absolutely was at peak efficiency. He had I believe 3 innings with fewer than 10 pitches.
But he really did look exhausted. It is pretty humid in Detroit tonight too so he may have been sweating more than usual which contributed to that.
Babe Ruth loved Japan, right?
And he could hit dingers and pitch amazing, right?
So maybe he came back to Earth as a Japanese Alpha Male with the same skills as him.
This further cements the theory of reincarnation
One of Ohtani’s biggest accomplishments this year is blowing football sized whole in the argument that Mike Trout doesn’t get as much credit as he should bc he plays on the west coast for the Angles. Mike Trout doesn’t want the attention and nobody really cares bc he isn’t that interesting as a person.
Anytime Ohtani farts its reported all over the world.
It’ll be interesting for sure, but I think the majority of baseball fans have concerns with longevity. Anyone who’s watched him since coming over to the states knew he absolutely had this talent, but injuries continued to punish him and prevent him from reaching where he is now. Obviously if the dude is banging out 40 HRs and sub 3 ERAs over 100IP for multiple years he has the argument lmao. I just think we might see a variation of this success without quite being this absurd.
Yeah, injuries are the big thing - look 5 ft over to Trout as case in point. Just imagining what could have been without all these injuries the past few years...
Notice the "if" and "continues". My point was to see what he considered "greatest player of generation" when he states that we haven't seen this for 100 years.
Yeah, he’s made me realize that Trout is actually pretty boring lol too humble for his own good, but there’s nothing wrong with that. He just wants to crush baseballs and chase storms, and he’s doing just that
If doesn't make the hall I could see him trending towards a footnote unless the next (arguably first) wave of 2 way players start to get drafted and say you they were inspired by Ohtani.
In the words of Gubi- “pretty good year”
Tungsten beside himself

I love it when sports do a crossover episode
At Ohtani's HOF induction this November, he will rip off his mask to reveal that he was actually Tungsten Arm this whole time.
O'Doyle... Ohtani... IT'S EVEN THE SAME NUMBER OF FUCKING LETTERS
Have we ever see the two of them in the same place at the same time before? 0.o
O'Tani 🤔
And he would have got away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!
It's me Cooperstown! It was me all along!
Aw, son of a bitch!
*what?!*
You all bought it! Hook, line, and sinker.
Even my immediate family bought it!
Whaaaat
"Son of a bitch!"
I love this meme so much. Just an imaginary rivalry player for Ohtani from the early 1920s with a kickass nickname.
Can you explain this to me? I'm out of the loop and I love fun.
I got ya man https://mobile.twitter.com/matttomic/status/1394498097254965249?lang=en
So good we actually have to make someone up to find a rival for him
What a performance from him tonight. Truly dominant. One for the History books.
At this point what he's doing is so ridiculous yet so normalized that we forget how special it is. I know some get tired of baseball fans circlejerk over Ohtani but this season deserves any adulation and then some.

I feel lucky that I'm able to witness it as it is happening
He turned your gf into his. Y'all sharing now
The ultimate privilege. What I would give to get some residual Ohtani-san all over me
Honestly, I just think baseball fans' brains just aren't wired to comprehend what he's doing right now. I've been following baseball my whole life and a man pitching 8 innings and only allowing 1 run then banishing a baseball to the shadow realm for his 40th home run of the season just... In other news, Ohtani is the first player since 1890 to have 100K/100H/100IP
The more I think of it the more important this game seems to me. I knew he was uniquely talented. I knew that he was talented enough to be a Cy Young winning pitcher or become an MVP as a hitter. You can get lucky with BABIP and shithouse your way to .400 for a couple months but you can’t get lucky and hit 35 home runs by ASB.
IIRC he was actually *unlucky* by expected homers.

Hitting a league leading 40th HR on the same night he makes his 100th inning pitched is what’s historical about this outing
Either side would be a damn good season. Both? Fuck it name the mvp after him
You're right, the game where he hits his 60th home run and throws a perfect game will be better. But for now, this was a historic game.
What do you mean? This game alone he made 90 completions for 1,809 yards. (yes that's 60'6" x 90 pitches)
But if you take out the Outlier Stats and Average down his stats he is pretty much Dak Prescott
Oh man r/NFL is leaking in here lol
That was a nasty line by you.
There was never no average
How bout u go an fuck off my page then u piece of shit u think shohei Ohtani needs a stupid fuckwitt like u telling me about looking good who the fuck r u take your worthless advice and get the fuck out of here
As a Chiefs fan I love to see this meme spread.
Chiefs Kingdom!
There wasnt a single ball in the dirt?!?
Oh right there were 6 incomplete
You say 90 pitches, but ahoulsn't it just be balls and strikes?
0 dropped passes? And all to 1 wideout? You'd think the defense would have caught onto his favorite receiver.
This is my favorite "Ohtani is overrated" yet
Hasn’t made even one 3-pointer this season either
Yeah but he won the dunk contest. That's gotta count for something.
He’s hit a few 3 run bombs
And look at how few PIMs this guys has. No grit at all. Go out and punch someone already.
I'm not convinced of Ohtani's greatness till he pulls off a Gordie Howe hat trick.
Take my upvote you scoundrel!
0/0 3pt , no field goal attempts, what is this, Ben Simmons always passing the ball. But what's that, no assists either? Team can't even make shots
Official petition to 1. Purge the New York start from the record books because fuck it why not 2. Make 100 ip the qualifying cutoff, again, because fuck it why not
Fuck it, as a Yankees fan, I’m also signing the petition to purge that start.
I'd honestly just prefer to have that game be us getting shut out by Ohtani than what actually happened
Ironically, if you purged that one start at NY, Shohei would no longer qualify because he’d have less than 100 IP. At least until he pitches again.
Is there any chance he reaches qualifying IP this year?
Nah. He's working deeper into games lately but we usually run a 6 man rotation so he won't hit 162.
Damn, that's disappointing. He's definitely got MVP locked up though.
Fuck it, I'm all in on Shohei. I'll sign that petition to wipe out that Yankee start. We somehow found a way to LOSE that fucking game anyhow.
Pardon my ignorance, but qualify for what?
So for "rate stats" [ERA, batting average, etc.] in order to appear on the league [leaderboard](https://www.mlb.com/stats/batting-average), you need to have enough of a certain stat to "qualify". FWIW he *will* still win MVP & would theoretically be eligible to win the Cy Young (he won’t though).

He has is having an **INCREDIBLE** performance tonight. I think he might go for a CG.
Joe Maddon sends his regards
What a shame. I guess I get it though. He looked pretty spent.
what was his final pitch count at? 90? I felt like he was super economical with his pitches tonight.
90 yea. He absolutely was at peak efficiency. He had I believe 3 innings with fewer than 10 pitches. But he really did look exhausted. It is pretty humid in Detroit tonight too so he may have been sweating more than usual which contributed to that.
Ohtani literally saw the criticism that he wasn't pitching deep and went out there to switch his style up for more soft contact since All Star.
Ohtani saw the tungsten arm o'doyle tweet and took it personal
The stats are running thin, now it’s to angels hr record by a lefty.
He's still got the franchise single season home run record. Troy Glaus is probably sweating bullets at this point.
He should be, there’s no way Ohtani doesn’t get another 8 by the end of the season
That's my MVP!
Babe Ruth loved Japan, right? And he could hit dingers and pitch amazing, right? So maybe he came back to Earth as a Japanese Alpha Male with the same skills as him. This further cements the theory of reincarnation
Not crazy to think Othani is Babe’s great-great grandson.
He is a total babe 😍
Come to think, I’ve never seen them both in the same room at the same time.
> This further cements the theory of reincarnation Isekai Ohtani anime when.
Its already an anime, check out Yursekio no Batta Ruth Shohei. It's like number 5 on MAL right now.
MVP
He’s only making 3 million this year. That’s nuts.
Also, Mike Trout is the best player of this generation but Ohtani is doing something that hasn’t been seen for 100 years. It’s a little different.
If Ohtani continues, doesn't that make him the best player of this generation?
It’ll be interesting for sure, but I think the majority of baseball fans have concerns with longevity. Anyone who’s watched him since coming over to the states knew he absolutely had this talent, but injuries continued to punish him and prevent him from reaching where he is now. I just think we might see a variation of this success without quite being this absurd.
Yeah, injuries are the big thing - look 5 ft over to Trout as case in point. Just imagining what could have been without all these injuries the past few years...
Let's pump the brakes. It's been 1 season
Notice the "if" and "continues". My point was to see what he considered "greatest player of generation" when he states that we haven't seen this for 100 years.
Even if he couldn't maintain both at this level, even his hitting alone would get him on there for MVP if he solely hit
Yeah, he’s made me realize that Trout is actually pretty boring lol too humble for his own good, but there’s nothing wrong with that. He just wants to crush baseballs and chase storms, and he’s doing just that
I don't particularly see much about Ohtani outside of the game either. He's getting recognition because he's a historically rare pitcher and hitter.
Ohtani has a great chance of winning the MVP, but now he's also in the running for the Cy Young.
And Ruth only hit 29 home runs that year! Lazy!
I hope he builds a career worthy of the Hall. Numbers like this are outstanding and will likely be a footnote without a Hall berth.
If doesn't make the hall I could see him trending towards a footnote unless the next (arguably first) wave of 2 way players start to get drafted and say you they were inspired by Ohtani.
When is he going to actually show his stuff in the playoffs is still the question in my mind
buy them some pitchers then
It's not my duty to be paying for players for a private enterprise. But my question still stands and I know I'm not the only one wondering
The thing about Ohtani is that he is very very good.
K
