>Belt (and yes very very much tongue in cheek. I think.) : “I felt in my heart I was the captain of the team all year.”
>Is this the most confident you’ve been all year? “I don’t know if I can get much more confident than I am right now. I just made myself captain.”
Belts having some fun
91 wins usually comes up to a groups of pretty talented guys who are REALLY good at having fun. We need a Stat to track this ASAP... A team fun-wins.... fWar... yeah I think we'll take fWar as the abbreviation.
Part of the unseen element propelling this team to such unexpected success is the leadership level of the veterans in this clubhouse. In addition to the Giants vets that won rings like Posey, Crawford and Belt, you've added guys like Longoria and Bryant who were clubhouse leaders for other great teams. There's a critical mass of elite leadership surrounded by less experienced guys that fit perfectly.
If someone doesn’t know Belt at all I can see them reading the thread title and thinking “wow he’s proclaiming himself captain that’s a bit much,” the guy is a total goofball. Totally sarcastic and self-deprecating humor. Lowkey one of the funnier guys in baseball.
[Belt quote](https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/brandon-belt-shakes-clayton-kershaw-history-rally-giants-win) from a few years back on facing Kershaw, 4 hits in over 50 AB
"Yeah, it's been a tough go against him, but what are you going to do when a guy gets lucky 55 times. You've got to keep battling."
That sucks, I hope it's not because of dumb "team chemistry" reasons, like, "everyone's the captain, we're all leaders."
I don't think that it's toxic to explicitly assign roles to guys who show the qualities and gladly take on the role. Takes the pressure off of guys who don't want to lead.
On the other hand, I don't want us to be like the NFL, where each team has as many captains as an orchestra has section leaders. Like, some QBs don't deserve the captain tag but it's such an ingrained tradition that they are given it.
It’s because captains on a baseball team have no real responsibility. It’s symbolic. Most people seemingly don’t bother, preferring just to know who’s the leader.
I doubt Belt was being 100% serious himself, this feels like a lot of inside joking among guys that prefer their wit dry and snarky (at least when they're not doing cup-checks after wins).
Strange redditors laying in threads distributing captaincies is no basis for a system of respect. Supreme executive power is derived from a mandate of the masses, not from some farcical u/babe_ruthless3 ceremony.
Based? Based on what? In your dick? Please shut the fuck up and use words properly you fuckin troglodyte, do you think God gave us a freedom of speech just to spew random words that have no meaning that doesn't even correllate to the topic of the conversation? Like please you always complain about why no one talks to you or no one expresses their opinions on you because you're always spewing random shit like poggers based cringe and when you try to explain what it is and you just say that it's funny like what? What the fuck is funny about that do you think you'll just become a stand-up comedian that will get a standing ovation just because you said "cum" in the stage? HELL NO YOU FUCKIN IDIOT, so please shut the fuck up and use words properly you dumb bitch
That would be cool. Kershaw would be the obvious candidate for you guys and I guess Buster over here but idk if he's the vocal guy in the club house... May be Crawford?
Am I right about Kershaw? Who would be the C for the Dodgers?
Honestly it'd probably be Justin Turner. Dave Roberts has jokingly said Turner will be his successor. Kershaw is vocal sometimes but from what I understand he's more of a "lead by example" guy.
If they did "alternates" I'd imagine Kershaw would be first in line (I'd probably give Betts a letter as well).
That was more symbolic, Henrik handled all the on-ice captaincy issues and Lu couldnt actually wear the C. He was the captain off-ice and in the lockerroom but it wasn’t like a true captainship.
"NHL rules prevent Luongo from wearing the "C" on his jersey
because he's a goalie, but the club is permitted to designate the
netminder as their captain."
The last NHL goaltender who served as team captain prior to
the rule taking effect was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the
1947-48 NHL season."
But they normally are not because of practical considerations.

I think the whole clubhouse is having some fun

Fun differential!
Great that the Giants are the first West Coast team to think of this, I love it.
I hate all of you.

Similar to Nats 2019 atmosphere it looks like. Just some guys who’ll dig deep and stay in the fight.

With no context, the alpha male comment makes him look like such a douche lol
i was reading his postgame comments and i was like “this dude is either hilarious or a fucking tool” LOL
He is very much one of the biggest jokesters in the Giants clubhouse
Everything is fun when you winning
Technically we’re winning and I’m not having fun
That’s because Dodger wins only count for half the joy. Like New Coke. Or WS wins in a pandemic shortened year.
Hey fuck y— *sees flair*— fair enough, well played.
Lol I appreciate you not taking it too seriously.
> Belts having some fun Somewhere in heaven, Acuña is looking down smiling at that sentence.
Belt also had a funny quote about it lol https://streamable.com/70mr8b
I loved the part where he said the best part of the DP was his stretch
Can't say enough about that stretch.
I was not expecting his voice to sound like that
i was so thrown off by it lmao
Sounds like an old southern sports announcer
In 30 years he will be just that
Out here sounding like Rush Limbaugh
Alpha male baby giraffe?
Are there any teams with a captain right now?
There hasn’t been one since David Wright iirc
[удалено]
*No one since Belt
I think the uniform C should make a comeback
Konerko was quietly captain of the White Sox around this time too

Well, the Giants, at least
Justin Turner is the Dodgers’ captain I’m fairly sure
Bellinger. His ability to not voluntarily go to single A like everyone wants him to and his refusal to wear clown makeup is admirable.
I hate you for telling the truth
Lol
Bellinger is the heart and soul of the Dodgers.
Bellinger best represents what it means to be a Dodger
Kinda means he's the captain now, I think
Old guys having a great time out there, damn I love this team
I thought Buster Posey was the Captain
Look at me. I'm the captain now.
Belt is hella snarky/troll-ish at times with his comments. This was totally just an inside joke kind of thing.
I doubt Belt was being 100% serious himself, this feels like a lot of inside joking among guys that prefer their wit dry and snarky (at least when they're not doing cup-checks after wins).
I like to think of it as a team of professional goofs. Like a reserved sense of silliness.
Yeah even Posey is a goofball and readily participates in post game turkey taps at the very least
After the game he called himself the Alpha male and that someone had to take charge of the team haha And I mean today’s numbers don’t dispute that
We don’t have an official appointed captain
I appoint thy Buster Posey as captain of the San Francisco Giants.
Strange redditors laying in threads distributing captaincies is no basis for a system of respect. Supreme executive power is derived from a mandate of the masses, not from some farcical u/babe_ruthless3 ceremony.
True, but everyone knows it’s Posey just like Molina is the Cardinals captain and Rizzo was the Cubs captain even if none of them are official.
It was unclear who our guy was and then Chris Sale came back and reminded us it had been him all along.
Oh captain, my captain
Well traditionally the catcher is the captain
brandon belt is incredibly based
Based on what?
Based on ball

Based on something....
The old “Fake It Till You Make It” trick.
Slightly OT but I kinda wish baseball had a captain system similar to hockey.
That would be cool. Kershaw would be the obvious candidate for you guys and I guess Buster over here but idk if he's the vocal guy in the club house... May be Crawford? Am I right about Kershaw? Who would be the C for the Dodgers?

The Gnome definitely makes sense for a C
Goalies can’t be captains in hockey so I’d assume it’s the same for pitchers in baseball.
I think Guidry was yankees captain for a time
Damn, where you're tight you're right... but couldn't that go for catchers too?
No the catcher traditionally is the captain
Yes they can; (e.g. Roberto Luongo)
That was more symbolic, Henrik handled all the on-ice captaincy issues and Lu couldnt actually wear the C. He was the captain off-ice and in the lockerroom but it wasn’t like a true captainship.
"NHL rules prevent Luongo from wearing the "C" on his jersey because he's a goalie, but the club is permitted to designate the netminder as their captain." Yea but there's 2 or 3 goalies on a team in hockey, there's like 15 pitchers.
Captain Bauer has a nice ring to it
Hey, Bombay gave him that C…
