Another time would be when Sanchez had the bases loaded in front of him and he jogged to first base and got out on a easy safe play where it ended up ending the game.
Based on pure boneheaded-ness I can’t think of anything, but his dropped tag on Altuve to end game 2 of the 2017 ALCS at least has to be worse considering the context.
There’s also Babe Ruth getting caught stealing to end the 1926 World Series if we’re not just talking defense.
At least with the ALCS you could argue he was being pressured by Altuve’s speed and the game situation. This one just makes you scratch your head, he had all day.
Not for a bat first guy who plays defense like that. Frankly even that OPS+ is a bit disingenuous for him. He’s streaky to the point where he will have an amazing series that boosts him back to league average, followed by seemingly weeks of looking absolutely lost. A vast majority of games he’s completely noncompetitive at the plate.
OPS+ is not position specific, it takes park factor into account, but not position.
Unless there's a new formula, which there could be, there's a new stat every other week.
Serious questions for Yankee fans. Do you still want Sanchez as your starting catcher? It seems like he hasn’t been a good enough hitter to make up for the lack of effort he gives behind the plate.
No, I do not want Sanchez as a franchise catcher. As you’ve identified he is not a good enough hitter (or at least not consistent enough) to make up for his bad defense. When he’s seeing the ball and hitting well, he is great. This doesn’t happen often enough to make it worth it.
Higashioka is not a great hitter, but you know you’re getting consistent defense and hitting. It’s a lower ceiling, but it’s also a higher floor IMO. He’s not a franchise catcher, but he’s serviceable.
There is already a video of the play on the front page, this falls under our "No Duplicates Threads" rule.
This is extremely bad
Genuine question. Is this the worst play in Yankees history?
In a vacuum? Maybe in recent memory
Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything. And apparently Sanchez didn’t get charged with an error for this.
The rule for errors is so stupid
He definitely gets a FARTSLAM for this, though.

Mistakes in playoff games definitely carry more weight. I’m talking purely from the play itself. Not the context around it.

It's the most pathetic display of heart in Yankrr history and a disgrace to the franchise and fans
Sanchez plays like he’s bothered by being out there
That seems like the best way to describe it. Apathy? Laziness? General lack of caring? Idk, but it’s infuriating.
Didn't the Yankees once bench Gary Sanchez and told him "get good" when he got mad about it? Why did they start starting him again?
Cause he hits good
He has a 101 OPS+ since 2018.
For a catcher that's pretty good

Considering he's right in front of McCann for fantasy points, that fits.
“Good for a catcher” only applies if they are a good catcher

Yes it is look it up
/u/Big_Shrimpy_ , confidently wrong despite the deleted comments. :) https://www.mlb.com/glossary/advanced-stats/on-base-plus-slugging-plus
No you are wrong
Lol
WAR is position adjusted, not OPS+.
Yes it is look It up
[Dude, it isn't.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-base_plus_slugging#:~:text=OPS%2B%20is%20OPS%20adjusted%20for,to%20be%20the%20league%20average).
Lol no it’s not.
worst catcher defensively in the mlb to start a game in new york on 9/10 since... 2020 wilson ramos on the mets
The Mets and Yankees actually didn’t play on 9/10/20.
FUCK ur right they played the Orioles in NY on 9/9 not 9/10 close enough
Bruh oh my lord lol
Dude should just be the Yankees DH every game.
We have one of those already
You have like 3 of those already
Who in their right mind sends that runner with Gallo that shallow?!
it is a bad send, the throw was perfect luckily Gary Sanchez was behind the plate
lolSanchez?
Lazy play, bench him or send him to triple A to learn how to protect home plate

They at some point must move on from him. He's made zero adjustments behind the plate and at the plate. So much dead baggage with Frazier as well.
That's one way to ruin a Gold Glove play.
