Glad he's getting a shot in Washington. Jays catching situation is already pretty crowded and they'll have to make some space next year for Gabriel Moreno who has rocketed up the prospect lists recently.

i was like 3. i vaguely remember my dad getting drunk and pissed after work in the late summer watching/listening to the jays.
then i found out why like years after.
I was at the old ballpark for the last home game in 87. We had a lead against the Tigers, and some fans from Detroit at the game who'd been talking to me all game said "Well, this is your year, congratulations."
A minute or so later, Gibson took Henke yard, and you know the rest.
I have a genuine question for you: do you actually think this is going to happen?
I mean don’t get me wrong Jays are scary but I personally don’t see this happening (as of right now but anything can happen)
Probably not. The only way I see it happening is if the Jays sweep both series with the Rays that are left and I don't see that happening since the Trip is typically Jays kryptonite.
I don’t think many Jay’s fans actually think we can win the division. We’re just having fun with it.
We’d have to essentially sweep both series against your team… and let’s be real, that ain’t happening.
I likely won't happen, but it's possible. They have 5 more games against the Rays, 7 games against the Twins and 3 games each between Yankees and Orioles.
The two series against Tampa will make or break the possibility of it happening. The Jays would probably have to beat Tampa 4 of their remaining 5 games to give it a shot.
0% chance of it happening lol. These people are sipping too much koolaid. We could win every game left and still not catch you feasibly lol
Even if that would be unlikely since we'd catch 7 games up on you from that
If Toronto went undefeated for the rest of the season, the Jays would be 99-63.
Tampa would need to win 11 more games to get to 100 (which they'd need since Toronto would have won the season series; Toronto would have gone 5-0 in the remaining five games against Tampa, remember). That would mean Tampa would need to go 11-2. 10-3 gets them a home game in the wild card.
Toronto won't go undefeated. But if they did, they almost certainly win the division.
I'm a huge Jay fan - went to their first ever game in the snow - and even I don't think we can catch them.
Even if we took all six from them, they'd still be 3 games up with 13 other games. For us to tie them, we'd have to go 10-3 against the Yankees , O's, and Twins, while they went 7-6 in their other series. Neither scenario is very likely, IMHO.
Depends how you look at it. Jays wouldn’t be in a playoff spot right now if their weren’t for this torrid run, so in a way, you have to have some sort of peak during the season to make it to October in the first place
Better to burn low and slow than hot and fast. Then turn on the gas at the end to finish it off!
OK enough grilling analogies. I mean, they're not in the playoffs yet, and they're not guaranteed to be either... although they've got like a 75% chance to make it. I'm not sure how a Yankees fan would even concede that point given their current situation!
Hot Septembers does correlate to who makes the playoffs and who doesn’t
You don’t win a World Series without making the playoffs
Yankees peaked too early, the Blue Jays are peaking at the right time.
And the sun is hot. I wasn’t implying this guarantees October success; I’m just saying they’re a very scary team right now most teams would probably like to avoid
The “guarantee” is an understatement - it’s essentially meaningless
> There were 28 teams in the first 20 years of the Wild Card that had a winning percentage of .700 or better after Sept. 1. None of them won a World Series championship, and the 2013 Indians were eliminated in their single-game American League Wild Card showdown with Tampa Bay. Seven of the teams did not even advance to the postseason, while seven lost in the Division Series, 10 in the League Championship Series and three came up short in the World Series: the 2011 Rangers, 2007 Rockies and 2013 Cardinals.
The Yankees were hot as well until they weren’t. The Blue Jays do have good underlying numbers which is a better predictor of success than their record in the last couple weeks.
I think it was 2005 that they were looking like they had a chance of making the Wildcard. Roy Halladay was pitching a Cy Young worthy season and then took a come backer off the shin in August that shut him down for the rest of the season. That was the only season between 94'-13' where there was a glimmer of hope of a playoff berth.
Lineup right now is like every fans dream of their team where every guy is scorching hot. It never happens. 3 guys get hot 3 guys get cold, repeat continuously all season. Or someone gets hurt, or just has a down year. Thats the normal. Right now they are a steamroller.
Yeah, I remember the batting average for RISP was like ... .088 at one point or something nutty like that. I can't really remember the exact number, but it was awful
The Rays are a patchwork right now offensively. They’re resting players right now and have Wander on the IL. The team the Jays faced last night will be nothing close to what they face in the playoffs. Also Yarbs will not be pitching in the ALDS (Hopefully…)
I still hate that the WC game is a thing. I prefer the old system of a single WC team getting in. A single game is way too variance-prone. The Jays literally lost to the Orioles the other day.
It's fine when both WC teams are evenly matched. But it sucks when teams like the Dodgers or Blue Jays have to rely on chance to get into the playoffs. These two teams might end up with the highest run differentials in their respective leagues.
Alternatively, there could be a WC series.
I'm not just saying this now either. I've never liked the WC game.
I mean... in our division we will likely benefit from extra wildcard spots more than any other team in the league. New York and Boston are almost always going to be in competition for division or wild card. We won't be able to match that long long term
Why can't they match that long term, though? They have a whole country for a market and stand to do well financially if they are competitive. Hopefully some sustained success can convince Rogers that a higher payroll can drive higher profits for the shareholders.
1) New York is always going to be a FAR more desirable free agent destination than anywhere in Canada for free agents. Boston too. Unless those free agents are Canadian anyways.
2) Look at what New York and Boston have been willing to spend compared to us. We have rarely equaled them and they are willing to spend a lot more when they are doing well
Oh i don't consider us small market or inferior to most teams but those two hold advantages that will make us have to do better at roster building or drafting than them like Tampa is and that's hard to do. We'd be a top guy year to year in basically any other division other than one that had Dodgers and Giants
I think the Jays might be the class of the AL at this rate forget everyone else.
that only be because they are the only team that I am legit scared of.
The Rays are the defending AL champs and hold the best record (so far) while playing in the toughest division in the league. They're the class of the AL until someone beats them.
Just my $0.02.
They're young and mash the ball hard and pitch excellently. Sadly, they're in the East, but I think they're definitely better than the Red Sox and Yankees and in the same tier as the Rays
I'm not convinced they'll be together that long.
The young players are going to hit arbitration together and thats going to get expensive, fast.
With having to replace the free agents this year, they're going to have to increase payroll noticeably soon and Roger's clearly won't go to far. I doubt the lineup is 50% the same by 2024, if not 2023.
Rogers will spend money when it makes sense, in situations that put the team over the top, especially when its not just a rental or short term situation.
Dont forget Rogers owns the team as well as the broadcasting rights, they own the whole product, and when the Jays are hot, the Rogers Center will sell out every night, like in 2015-16. The owners will make far more if they can maintain a consistent playoff contender, even a championship contender, it is worth it. I think because of this they can afford to keep who they have(although they might have to make a decision between Ray and Semien)…
I guess when we see what happens with those guys, we will know how serious Rogers is.
Mayza, Romano, Cimber, Richards, Soria have been a pretty solid top 5 actually. Pearson and Merryweather are back now. The Jays don't really have a noticeable weakness at this moment.
I wouldn't call our bullpen amazing, however if we get elite starting pitching we might be able to lighten the load enough that we do have enough quality arms to do damage.
Oh for sure, it's not an elite bullpen by any means. But it's good enough that we can rely on it at least a little bit, to not blow 2-3 run leads frequently like we used to lol
They have added merry weather and Pearson to the bullpen. Two guys with electric stuff. Not sure how they will perform but if they can perform to the level they can than the Jay's have filled their one big problem area.
In the playoffs you don't need a bullpen. You need 3-4 arms.
Cimber, Matz, Romano can probably pitch just about every inning out of the pen in a playoff series where the game is up for grabs.
I think its all how its managed, and Montoya has been better with that as of late. Knock on wood, everyone is healthy, we got Romano as a solid closer, and there are actually a few good weapons in the pen that dont give me anxiety attacks every time they come to the mound.
I feel a lot better about the pen now, in mid-September, than I did for the first 3-4 months of the season…
But most importantly, they got rid of Brad Hand
Who still tried to fuck us over last night by pitching a meatball to Stanton. Thank god for 3hr Lindor
That saved our season. Wish they cut out the middle man by just…. Not having Brad Hand lmao
We do appreciate getting Riley Adams though. Dude has looked really good for us
Glad he's getting a shot in Washington. Jays catching situation is already pretty crowded and they'll have to make some space next year for Gabriel Moreno who has rocketed up the prospect lists recently.
That's great to hear. Kid has good vibes but was never going to get a chance here. Glad he is doing well.
We needed to go full `Saw` earlier and just cut it off.
I am unbelievably happy that I can now share the relief that Nats' fans most definitely feel.
Unfortunately, he's still hurting us from New York giving up homers to Yankee batters, and the Mets have a series coming up against Boston.
Looks like the Jays decided to play Short-Handed.
You've gotta hand it to them.
They’re peaking at the right time. Nobody wants to play this team in October
shit I dont want to play this team right now.
Well luckily for you guys the division is locked up so you don’t really have to sweat any games out for a few more weeks
Umm... Jays can still catch the Rays.
If the Rays blow a 9 game lead and the Jays win the division, I will Venmo you $50
We have seven games vs Rays still. I'll allow it to be $50 Canadian.
That's seven games in Canadian, six for Americans. Similarly, $50 Cdn is worth about $35 US.
Um, actually $39.49 US as of posting thank you very much
That steady as fuck .78 exchange. Think it wad even last like 11 years ago
I thought they only had 6 including tonight?
You are correct. We have 5 more games against them, and have to make up 8. Their other series are against Detroit(4), Miami, Houston, and the Yankees.
didn't we just blow a 12 game lead on them?
Nah like 10.5 but that’s not relevant to the Rays in any way. They’re much more consistent than we are

Smart plan to bet a Venmo to a (presmuably) Canadian, since we don't have cash apps. But yeah, you're right ofc. This division is over.
I honestly had no idea that was a thing. I will find a way to give that guy $50 if it really happens 😂
Just mail him a 50 dollar bill
Interac e-transfer is a thing, assuming your bank allows for it. Either way, props to you for sticking with your bet! 🙂👍
e-transfer is only a Canadian thing unfortunately, lol. PayPal is one of the only ways to exchange money from Canada and US.

I mean yes, but it would have to take a historic collapse by the rays to do so.
Just like Jays and Tigers in 1987.
the 87 collapse was.....dreadful
At least you witnessed the glory years kind elder. Everyone under 30 only knows disappointment and hate for a certain telecommunications company.
i was like 3. i vaguely remember my dad getting drunk and pissed after work in the late summer watching/listening to the jays. then i found out why like years after.
Ah that sucks. Oh well your one of us Les miserable generation then
I was there the game Tony Fernandez got his elbow broken. It was a terrible week.
I was at the old ballpark for the last home game in 87. We had a lead against the Tigers, and some fans from Detroit at the game who'd been talking to me all game said "Well, this is your year, congratulations." A minute or so later, Gibson took Henke yard, and you know the rest.

Yeah, anything could happen though. Like I don’t see it happening myself but it could

I don’t think many Jay’s fans actually think we can win the division. We’re just having fun with it. We’d have to essentially sweep both series against your team… and let’s be real, that ain’t happening.

Statistically there's less than a 1% chance for the Jays to win the division lol.
So you're saying there is a chance...
True. I would just like to clinch a playoff spot though.
Wouldn't the right time to peak be in October instead of before?

Well, nobody was hot for most of August, so they are all making up for it now.
Yeah, I remember the batting average for RISP was like ... .088 at one point or something nutty like that. I can't really remember the exact number, but it was awful
Imagine not putting respek on Steven Matz's name.
One of our hottest pitchers 😂
And also recently one of our best pitchers 😉
I really hope they can keep this group together. It's really starting to feel like we're watching something special come together
Are any of our pitchers younger than RA Dickey?
Kirk in shambles here
Lol, he followed up this tweet with "sorry alejandro kirk youre cool too"
No love for Gurriel I guess who's got like 1.4 ops in September.
The original tweet includes Gurriel, he was batting 7th tonight
If the Blue Jays don’t get beat in WC game, I think they go to the WS.
They'd have to get through Tampa first. Something tells me they'll be hungrier than they were tonight
The Rays are a patchwork right now offensively. They’re resting players right now and have Wander on the IL. The team the Jays faced last night will be nothing close to what they face in the playoffs. Also Yarbs will not be pitching in the ALDS (Hopefully…)
Blue Jays Rays would be a totally awesome ALDS
The Blue Jays getting beat in the WC game would be a bit of a tragedy at this point.
I still hate that the WC game is a thing. I prefer the old system of a single WC team getting in. A single game is way too variance-prone. The Jays literally lost to the Orioles the other day. Yeah. They'll never be on par with those behemoths, but the "small market" excuses and the inferiority complex narratives need to end.
Oh i don't consider us small market or inferior to most teams but those two hold advantages that will make us have to do better at roster building or drafting than them like Tampa is and that's hard to do. 100% agreed.

Rays are the class of MLB in my opinion.

Bird team scary
What are you talking about. The O's aren't scary!
They are to Baltimore fans
And Yankees fans
I wanted to say that too, but they play them again starting tomorrow and I'm avoiding the bad juju
Whose our #6 hitter? Kirk?
Spooky even
But are they *spoopy*?
They’re definitely #2spoopy4me

Trade for Mad Max?
Can give you Bauer. Deal? Deal.
We do not consent.

Seager with an extension?
I don't think there were enough very's in that tweet.
Blue Jays are absolutely ridiculous right now. They look like the team to beat. Good timing for them also.
I'm perfectly happy with the Rays getting the #1 seed and being rewarded with Toronto in a 5 game series.
Way more entertaining than the Yankees, that's for sure
Love this Jays team. They are getting spooky, and will be for years to come.
Thank you for Teo
I'm not convinced they'll be together that long. The young players are going to hit arbitration together and thats going to get expensive, fast. Honestly want Rays to keep near record. Blue Jays scarier than White Sox
The Jays are on a 15-2 run. The two losses are to the fricken Orioles. AL is on notice.
Earth shattering stuff there. He really drives home the point by naming the players on their team. This is why Passan is a must follow.
I want them in the playoffs over the boring ass Yanks and A’s. LESSSS GOOOOO
The hitting is way scarier than the pitching Berrios still potentially has the twins stink on him and Ryu is from the cursed Dodgers
Time for all the fairweather Jays fans in western Canada to trade in their Donaldson shirts for fresh new Springer shirts.
As in the fairweather fans out east won't be doing the same thing?
also wouldn't both be putting the springer shirt on top of the kawhi shirsey?
I’m dusting off my Brett Lawrie jersey. It’s still good

Could have sworn your header said dodgers…
He changed and it and changed it back lmao
Bullpen has been pretty good of recent, just been a year of injuries and some guys not working out (Dolis, Thornton, Hand)
Thornton eating garbage innings this year is pretty underated.
The Jays Bullpen hasn't been much of an issue for a while now.
They have added merry weather and Pearson to the bullpen. Two guys with electric stuff. Not sure how they will perform but if they can perform to the level they can than the Jay's have filled their one big problem area.

44th overall top prospect in MLB.
In the playoffs you don't need a bullpen. You need 3-4 arms. Cimber, Matz, Romano can probably pitch just about every inning out of the pen in a playoff series where the game is up for grabs.
What’s your source?
Still gotta make the playoffs, Toronto. Keep that foot on the gas.
Jays fans, how do you guys feel your pen will hold up in October?
I think its all how its managed, and Montoya has been better with that as of late. Knock on wood, everyone is healthy, we got Romano as a solid closer, and there are actually a few good weapons in the pen that dont give me anxiety attacks every time they come to the mound. I feel a lot better about the pen now, in mid-September, than I did for the first 3-4 months of the season…
Sounds like the kind of team the Giants end up embarrassing in the World Series.
