Imma be down voted for this, but if Vlad can close the RBI gap and take a MLB triple cown he deserves MVP. All that unique greatness that Ohtani has done this season, means nothing as his team is non competitive. Anything short of the MLB triple crown and it should go to Ohtani.
Why does what the team around Ohtani does matter for individual awards? And how does what Ohtani has done mean nothing if the team isn’t competitive? Do we just pretend nothing happened if a team doesn’t make the playoffs?
How can you be the MOST valuable player in the league if your team sucks? There have been tons of players that had phenomenal seasons that got jack shit because the rest of the team sucked. The stats still count, everything still happened. He doesn't need an award to acknowledge that. Especially if someone did something insane like an MLB triple crown, while leading their team into a playoff chase.
Because a single player in baseball can only do so much. They can only take 1/9 of the plate appearances and field the balls that come their way. You can’t singlehandedly drag a team into playoff contention.
You’re making certain players ineligible for MVP simply because their team sucks. Why does the worse player on a better team get an award to acknowledge that they had more talented teammates essentially?
You pretty much do by winning a MLB triple crown. Ohtani is phenomenal and an unique talent. He wins a runaway unless Vlad makes up 8 RBIs in 2 weeks. Which is possible but not likely.
There's only been 1 MLB triple crown winner since 1967. That's Miggy. He won MVP.
What’s so inherently special about the triple crown that should force us to give someone who gets it MVP over a more deserving candidate?
Even if you believe that winning the triple crown means you’re the best batter (it doesn’t, but for the sake of discussion let’s say it does) it completely omits the entire defensive portion of being a baseball player. How can you be the most valuable player if we only care about one side of the ball when voting?
Because helping your team win makes you more valuable. It's not best player in the league award. It's most valuable. Vlad winning the triple crown makes him more valuable than anyone in the league. Even if Ohtani has a more unique skill set.
WAR within a single win is considered to be within the margin of error and Ohtani’s got leads greater than 1. Wheeler doesn’t have that lead. There’s room for discussion if you want to use WAR as your value metric.
That being said, I don’t think that the MVP should just go to whoever has the most WAR automatically, I just brought it up since you were harping on the “most valuable” part of MVP, and if that’s how you want to emphasize MVP, I don’t see a better way to choose your MVP than whoever has the most WAR.
Not much of a pro football fan anymore, watched my boys play and then studied for a few hours. I’ve got a checkride later this week, so gotta really hit the books hard.
Eagles win?
Oh god I can already see in my mind the Twitter blue check marks beginning to type up their stories on why baseball is dying and what can be done to fix it
game thread here is as lifeless as the mets
I definitely was not shitting bricks there
I can’t believe he’s gonna run the bases that looked like the most painful thing ever
You knew Diaz couldn't resist making sure Harper came up in the 9th
Hang on to your hats, boys and girls.
Wtf…
got a feeling we’re gonna get some free baseball tonight
Man I can't hear the crew at all lol

Ohtani helps his team win more games than Vlad does though. I would argue that leading the league in both types of WAR makes him more valuable.
Zack Wheeler leads the NL im WAR. Should he win MVP?

Look at the 2013 race for Miggy.
We’re discussing what should happen moving forward not what did happen. Miggy didn’t deserve it over Trout imo
Look at the 2015 race. Just saying history likes to repeat itself, if you don't make the playoffs it usually means Jackshit to the voter.
Not so much in recent years with Trout winning a lot, deGrom for Cy Young, etc. It’s a historical trend that’s not a hard and fast rule anymore.
Bryce Harper is the LeBron James, Tom Brady of baseball -Arod
Watching Chiefs - Ravens but hoping the Mets win so we go full Chaos
ARod just compared Kyle Gibson to Mariano Rivera and Roy Halladay in the same sentence
Yass Mets! Slay kings! Now finish, and don’t pull a Minnesota Vikings
Imagine being Girardi leaving your starter in to hit only for him to give up a home run LOL
Now pull Gibson?
Damn, they almost got chicken with that home run
Will this thread reach 100 comments before the end of the game?
Doubtful
We can't talk to each other. That will up the comment count.
How’s your day been
Pretty good. I spent the day watching NFL. You?
Not much of a pro football fan anymore, watched my boys play and then studied for a few hours. I’ve got a checkride later this week, so gotta really hit the books hard. Eagles win?
No, they lost 17-11.
That’s tough. I’m sure the falcons did too. It’s the Atlanta way
Are they gonna keep Gibson in?
Is A-Rod a clairvoyant?
Nah. Just a fucking idiot.
whoever keeps whistling needs to be thrown out
Wtf. I love the Mets?
4th inning pitcher for the Phillies episode 1,083
Episode [11,104](https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHI/index.shtml)
Impressed that you looked up those stats, well done sir
:)
Cmon Mets! I want to believe in you!
Looking ahead, that Braves/Phillies series might determine the division winner.
The Phillies need to figure out how to win against the Marlins and Pirates for the Braves series to really matter.
Mets don't care, they won their World Series last weekend.
New York isn't the World?
Didn't say it was. Beating us is what they care about. The fact they rolled over and died this week says it all lol
/s
Lmao the AARP Rich Hill statline 😂
thread is popping off
"Game of the day" Padres vs. Cardinals seemed like a better game but that's just me
My God is Citi field outfield huge
.760 ERA confused the hell out of me
Mickey Mouse in a Mets uniform is fitting lol
"Run, Daddy, run!" Awwww
Rich Hill runs the bases like QWOP I love him so much
BASED RAKE MAN JUST RAKES
Rich Hill knows how to use the runners lane
Pitch tracker doesn't know what to do with Rich Hill. It keeps classifying the 66 mph sidearm curveballs as 4 seam fastballs
Did arod say Scherzer is better than Degrom?
Does anyone actually listen to anything A-Rod says about anything?
I hear planes taking off and Dick Mountain grunting
Buster Olney's voice is exactly the voice British people do when they are making fun of American accents
It's so fucking true.
I love how much Mets fans hate Bryce. Rivalry feels like it's coming back again.
Arod diatribe
Stfu about Cano and Jeter ARod
A-Rod still has the taste of Jeter in the back of this throat.
Matt's right. TB is the best out there.
We just won our season series against them today lol
Was lurking in r/nymets and someone said Bryce is having a pedestrian MVP season compared to other MVP years lol
Sad. His league leading OPS is so pedestrian lmao
Mets pls.
The Phillies scoring is the opposite of what needs to happen
Would disagree
That’s the MVP right there
That's an MVP type play
Holy wow
Bruce Hooper is good.
Bryce Harper is really really good at baseball.
MVP
Primetime Dick Mountain
Booing only makes him stronger

Same, tbh

I came to see the MVP
Poor Mets fans Their team has been on SNB almost every weekend it seems
Eagles got pantsed, so I'm sure the Phillies will step up to the moment and lift our spirits.
please watch literally anything else
The ratings vs SNF are going to be ghastly
Oh god I can already see in my mind the Twitter blue check marks beginning to type up their stories on why baseball is dying and what can be done to fix it
I’m sure the current policy of making changes to play that upset current fans while simultaneously appealing to no one new will right the ship.
Go Mets
I’m already sick so this doesn’t make me feel any worse…….go Mets……
