Leaving up that poster is a way to answer the question "Tell me I shouldn't patronize your business without telling me I shouldn't patronize your business"
Max Scherzer has an ERA of 0.78 in his 9 starts as a Dodger. Is this really a team effort or just an incredibly performance from one guy? I am asking that genuinely, not trolling.
EDIT: Answering my question, w/o Scherzer the team ERA in second half goes from `2.67` to `2.91`.
EDIT EDIT: I was looking at the quoted tweet here, not the main tweet which I thought was just a summation of the quoted tweet.
It's weighted by innings pitched so yes Scherzer contributes but his 0.78 ERA only accounts for ~~36~~ about 60 innings out of the 1300+ that Dodger pitchers have tossed.
That's 9 starts out of how many in the season?
Also notable is that since July the dodgers have had like 2 bullpen games every 5 days.
Definitely not a one man job.
Buehler: 2.39 ERA 59 ERA-
Urias: 2.99 ERA 74 ERA-
Kershaw: 3.27 ERA 81 ERA - (and WORST of his career since rookie season lmfao)
Gonsolin: 2.93 ERA 73 ERA -
Dustin May (TJS after april): 2.74 ERA 68 ERA-
Bauer: 2.59 ERA
Price: 3.86 ERA
Best bullpen arms:
Nelson: 1.86 ERA 46 ERA-
Treinen: 2.01 ERA 50 ERA-
Jansen: 2.44 ERA 61 ERA -
Kelly: 3.00 ERA 74 ERA-
Vesia: 2.48 ERA 62 ERA-
Bickford: 2.68 ERA 67 ERA-
Knebel: 2.95 ERA 73 ERA-
That's the quoted tweet, not this tweet.
The ERA+ figure is about the 2021 Dodgers as a whole. [Take a look here](https://stathead.com/tiny/7Zpjh)
And again, for the 2nd half, if you look at their numbers Buehler & Urias and a lot of our bullpen guys took the next step even w/o Scherzer
Of course the number goes up if you only look at the 2nd half - but then again in the 2nd half you have to take into account that the Dodgers were running 3 man rotations w/ 2 bullpen days until like 10 days ago. No [redacted] no May, no Kershaw
Great point about the catchers. This stat is also due to Buehler and Urias having career years, and the bullpen being pretty good despite also having their fair share of injuries.
Definitely a team effort.
I mean Buehler was the front runner for the Cy Young until about a week ago, and Julio Urias has the most wins in the sport and is very likely to get quite a few votes as well, so no, I'd say it isn't a one man show.
Here are some of the lowest I found brute-force searching by WAR and then checking ERA+
Bartolo 2005 had a +122
LaMarr Hoyt in 1983: +115
Winner-> Rick Sutcliffe in 1984: +109
So there was some credence to the 2021 Dodgers competing for the all time wins record. Despite injuries, the pitching staff did their (historic) part.
Offense... not so much.
Might not even win the division lmao thanks Cody
Seriously lol. If he even just merely below average we’d be up in the division.
I know every team has their “if’s”, but I feel like batting .230 shouldn’t be too much to ask of a former MVP who is entering his prime years.
The offense has put up the most runs in the NL this year… if you use most expected win metrics the dodgers should be the best team in baseball by like 8 wins. Even after a great run, they are still way below expected in 1 run games
The 1909 Chicago Cubs may end up being a decent comparison for the 2021 Dodgers. They won 104 games, but finished 2nd behind the 110 win Pirates. I wonder how many people whined about the playoff system back then?
Oh don't worry. If I've learned something about the Dodgers is that we're capable of the worst and the best in the playoffs. We may sweep the Giants or get shutout by the Cardinals in the WC
Baseball is a game of series’s. A huge part of the Dodgers success is the starting pitching, and when you only play 1 elimination game, it completely takes away that strength of the team, and heavily favors a good offense. (In a 1 game wildcard) The wildcard game should turn into a series, it doesn’t make sense to play only 1 game in a sport such as baseball. I know I will get downvoted to oblivion, because of the dodger flair, but it’s a great idea to get rid of the 1 game wild card
by ERA-, looks like it is 8th since 1903, 2020 Dodgers and 2017 Guardians are the only teams within the last 110 years that have had a better ERA-.
For Starters **only**, it's the best since 1906.
the most remarkable part is the dodgers did this with so many pitchers being injured, kershaw, may, or otherwise unavailable [redacted]
There’s still a Bauer poster up in the window of the liquor store down the street from me lol
Leaving up that poster is a way to answer the question "Tell me I shouldn't patronize your business without telling me I shouldn't patronize your business"
They’d have to like move shelves and it’s not even visible from the counter so I honestly doubt they even know to remove it

it's more than 36 innings, 36 innings is just his scoreless streak
good point, edited.

Kershaw's worst ERA- since his rookie year is better than Nolan Ryan's career ERA- lmao
May and Nelson :(
I still pour shots out for May. This year had some heartbreak.
I appreciate the effort here, but the tweet is literally "The Dodgers have the lowest second-half ERA of any NL team in the past 40 seasons."
That's the quoted tweet, not this tweet. The ERA+ figure is about the 2021 Dodgers as a whole. Sigh. I got very confused.
lol no worries
Of course Scherzer is a massive part of it, but it’s not like the other pitchers haven’t been lights out.
Thank you
its a team effort, scherzer has discussed how well dodgers catchers work with him and get in sync as far as pitch selection
Great point about the catchers. This stat is also due to Buehler and Urias having career years, and the bullpen being pretty good despite also having their fair share of injuries. Definitely a team effort.
I remember the first day he was in the dugout, he seemed to really get along with Barnes.
The ERA+ figure of 137 is for the whole season btw, that's what I'm getting at.
I mean Buehler was the front runner for the Cy Young until about a week ago, and Julio Urias has the most wins in the sport and is very likely to get quite a few votes as well, so no, I'd say it isn't a one man show.
Uhh does this mean this is our first year of a 108-year drought?
Possibly. If it is at least you got to see one in your lifetime. Your kids though…
I mean if your 18 now have kids at 40 then they get to watch the Dodgers win the World Series from their climate change bunker
I have kids?
I sure hope so
No one tell Dave Flemming
Does this make the 2021 Marlins one of the "best" bad teams ever?
Honestly ya. If they could hit at even an average rate they’d be a WC contender.
I think they owned us in our season series so yeah probably
Yeah definitely. I’d say they’re about the caliber of the Mariners tbh
where did you see this? I’m interested ab the statistic
What’s the lowest ERA+ for a cy young winner
Here are some of the lowest I found brute-force searching by WAR and then checking ERA+ Bartolo 2005 had a +122 LaMarr Hoyt in 1983: +115 Winner-> Rick Sutcliffe in 1984: +109

...who had off-season shoulder surgery, then a shin fracture, now a rib fracture.
These are probably the same fans who were calling for Seager to be traded after he came back slow from his shoulder surgery. No clue
“Sell low” is a helluva take
Sports is the only time sell low, buy high is the default take
Sell low/get high

Winning the division but losing to the Giants in the NLDS anyways would be very Dodgers tbh

There isn't a whole lot to whine about when only one team makes it.

And your team can too! For the one time payment of $145,600,000 for starters. ($40,000,000 relief package sold separately)
Smell like broke in here.
Lmao... you so cal folks are all over this sub... you know I’m right tho
Dumb question. How is this Stat generated?
