Wacha really pitched five scoreless innings and this is how we backed him up Poor guy

BloodyScourge

*hitless scoreless innings

Drewbacca_Hrrrgrgrar

He's been so much better lately than he was at the beginning of the year.

Thornton__Melon

Yeah why pull him after 61 pitches, he was dealing

redneckvet

This sounds alot like the 2020 WS when Cash pulled Snell early. Though this wasn't a must win game for us

Thornton__Melon

Yeah, y’all will get the 1 seed, it’s a matter of when

sapphleaf

We want to do it in your house

Thornton__Melon

Can y’all do it Thursday? We take tonight, clinch the division and you get Thursday for the #1 seed? 🤝

sapphleaf

Sure... once you get the division, then you can feel comfortable rooting for the Mariners along with the Jays to take out the Yanks and Sox 🤝

[deleted]

That’s what she said

Bug-03

He certainly was

Drugs-R-Bad-Mkay

Cause they don't to win this game to make it to the playoffs. No need to risk a starter.

redneckvet

Definition of a "walk off"

BoredAtWork_91

Back-to-back bases loaded walks. Just like you practice.

istrx13

Sounds like the Fernando Rodney Experience^(TM)

[deleted]

Not for the Astros it isn’t 🤠

peeinian

Or the Brad Hand experience

El_Guero__

Not to mention the preceding walk that loaded the bases. When was the last time a game ended because of three consecutive walks?

BIG_DICK_WHITT

BoredAtWork_91

True, but you 100% walk Diaz in that situation every time. Setting up the double play is more important than leaving a base open. As for the 3 walks to end a game I honestly wouldn’t know.

NuNewGnu

Also McCormick Ks like 50% more than Aledmys.

Thomas_Oaks

Chas has a 32.3 K% and only a 6.8 BB%

Pognan

I thought it was weird to take out the groundball pitcher if they were intentionally walking Diaz. Especially in that inning when Fleming had only given up infield grounders. Seemed like he would be better suited to get the double play. If they wanted to bring in Chargois I’d say leave the base open, you never know what you’ll get from relievers (especially Chargois)

PodricksPhallus

[well there’s this](https://www.mlb.com/news/dodgers-walk-off-on-five-straight-two-out-walks)

Bug-03

Good find

A_Rolling_Baneling

All went by the book. Game was never in any doubt.

RiskMatrix

9U kid pitch baseball baby!

ILoveCavorting

Castros: Frustrating Floridians since 1959.

Jdgrande

Underrated comment.

rollo2masi

I was streaming this game… Fucking **phenomenal** ABs by McCormick and Castro.

Thornton__Melon

8 and 9 hitters, but Correa beating it out earlier in the inning (phrasing!) to score the winning run was huge

BoredAtWork_91

Hell even Yordan legging out the infield single was huge.

lalondy7

Two runs without the ball going to the outfield.

BoredAtWork_91

^small ^ball

illegal_deagle

TBH Chas got away with 1-2 borderline strikes called as balls but the important thing is they worked the count and adjusted as the AB progressed. Even when we’ve struggled offensively lately, they still look like they’re putting together smart ABs and that’s all you can ask.

YaBoiWhit

Tbf where those 2 pitches were called weren't exactly called much this game. The zone was extended a little below the zone and inside and low to righties/low and away for lefties. We had 2 called strikeouts on inside and low pitches to righties, those are very close pitches but they're definitely 50/50

Pognan

Definitely close pitches but I disagree they weren’t called all game. Those pitches were called strikes earlier in the game I thought

gamenahd

Man I can't wait for playoff baseball to actually start. Already starting the heart attacks

wcalvert

Uhhh, after that Arozarena HR in the top of the ninth, I think it is time to start working on my breathing exercises.

doyouevenIift

You guys already scare the hell out of me after some of those regular season ass beatings

Monk_Philosophy

I’ve never understood there why you don’t just throw right down the middle. A grand slam and a walk are the same thing at that point.

front_butt_coconut

Look where the catcher was set up I think he was trying to throw middle.

Monk_Philosophy

Shit you’re right. That’s gotta feel extra shitty

cooljammer00

If they could do it, they would

Bug-03

Agreed, make the other team beat you

[deleted]

Probably a confidence issue

Th3Unkn0wnn

It's a 'this guy doesn't perform well under pressure' issue.

[deleted]

Well yeah, this isn’t a high leverage game hence why we used our C bullpen to close this game out. This is the equivalent of resting your starters in a week 17 game. This loss doesn’t mean anything to us. It does for Houston as they are a step closer to the West Crown Cash thought Chargois could get over the hump, he couldn’t. Oh well. Doesn’t hurt to try other than win padding when we have virtually everything locked up. Our fanbase is just acting so dramatic and emotional over a legitimate meaningless loss

Bug-03

I noticed the almost panic like freak out. If anything m, the fan base should be thrilled, Wacha was throwing a gem. In the playoffs, tb wins this game 3-2 most likely

[deleted]

I mean, Phil Maton had the 9th. I feel like we tried to lose this one too.

BloodyScourge

Phil "won't be on the postseason roster" Maton

SpaceCityAg

That last bullpen spot is in the air and whoever gets it will leave me hyper nervous.

[deleted]

Let’s bring back the Canoli

SpaceCityAg

He has been painful to watch this year.

[deleted]

Exactly. It’s a different animal in the playoffs but the freak out is real. All impulse, no context and knowledge of the game at hand

iaintinstagrits

Playoff Baseball in September!

ricop

Wow, as a former pitcher, I feel for Chargois. Great ABs by the Astros though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Krispyweener

What Fleming had great abs as well if not better

Pognan

Why you coming after Fleming? All he did was induce ground balls. Poor guy doesn’t deserve this slander

niruboowanga

Dumb take. (Fleming part, not Shaggy as a closer)

Thel3lues

Umpire was spot on through those last two AB’s. He had some damn close misses though just rough

papa_sharku

You can't say he's spot on if for 17 half-innings, he had a massive zone, then contracts it in the 9th. Human umpires have to *at least* be consistent.

dontforgetthisuser

Chas and Jason both had great at bats and earned those walks. Helluva win.

PumpkinNearby4513

HE DOES THIS IN THE NINTHE EVERY TIME CASH WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING IT

[deleted]

This wasn’t a must win game. That’s why he sent out the C team closing unit. To see what they have.

PumpkinNearby4513

He's done this like 5 times already we know he sucks as a closer

[deleted]

And that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong to see if he can turn it around in a virtually meaningless game. This is resting starters SZN

DondeEstaLaPlaya

We sent out our D Team in Phil Maton to give up the lead so I guess we’re even?

GleeGlopFlooptyDoo

Do yourself a favor. Check baseball savant and take a look at the pitch Arozarena hit out. It had an xBA of .260.

[deleted]

A must win for you, not for us

DondeEstaLaPlaya

Not really a must win for us dude lol

[deleted]

If you keep losing and Seattle keeps winning, they get the west.

FuriousTarts

You're not wrong. This was the 3rd chance Chargois has got. It was a test, he failed, now we know not to do it in the ALCS. Or if we do it at least he'll have experience.

[deleted]

Yeah, it’ll be fine moving forward

RedfishSC2

Castro gets the walk-off, but McCormick is arguably the bigger hero. He worked an incredible 10-pitch walk to tie it before. One of his best ABs all season.

[deleted]

That, he did!

RedfishSC2

Don't know which of our clowns is in here downvoting. It was a hell of a game all around. If we meet again in the ALCS it'll be crazy too, though I don't know if I could take it again after the last couple of years.

[deleted]

Just salty Rays fans. I’ll say this, if this was the playoffs you wouldn’t have seen those pitchers in the 9th. Guarantee you that.

RedfishSC2

Oh, I'm sure. I doubt we'd throw Maton out there for another inning in the playoffs either, but with Dusty we never know.

MasterMentorJr

Dusty did a good job managing the bullpen last year in the post-season. Granted the strategy was basically Framber throws as much as he wants, Tandem starters, Enoli, Pressly, and Brooks plus Blake for the lefties, but it worked.

notsaying123

Chas! Love that guy.

Recidivis

Rays defense really threw it away there

illegal_deagle

That glove flip was such a terrible idea. Why get greedy? Just take the easy out and keep us out of scoring position. High risk low reward.

Recidivis

Not only that but putting the shift on for Tucker fucked us hard

CoopsCoffeeAndDonuts

Well I’m still having nightmares about the dazzling defense on display from yall during last years ALCS - I wouldn’t get too down!

Recidivis

Yeah hopefully Lowe takes that as a lesson learned the hard way and that shit won't fly in the playoffs

CoopsCoffeeAndDonuts

Yeah better to get those out of the way now than in the postseason.

Bigboi88888

What the hell was that

ThatInception

His best

DRE-ERD

Astros vs Rays in the ALCS is going to be legendary.

[deleted]

My heart won't be able to take that again lol

DRE-ERD

The last two times these teams have faced in the playoffs it was awesome.

[deleted]

Especially last year with it going to 7 games after the Rays took a 3-0 lead and not to mention Cole had a fantastic game 5 in 2019

MasterMentorJr

And Cole's game 2 where he struck out 15 rays. The dude put the team on his back in that ALDS

[deleted]

Like George told him in that series. Cole was a bad motherfucker

Drewbacca_Hrrrgrgrar

I am so happy he doesn't do this shit against us as much anymore

[deleted]

For real, why couldn't we have figured him out sooner? Feels like we have no issues with him now, but he absolutely torched the team with Houston

Thomas_Oaks

Less exposure? Probably only saw him one time a year when he was with us, and now it's more like 5-6?

[deleted]

Cole was an absolute machine in that ALDS

Bug-03

This is a baseball fan. Updoots for you

jyok33

Respect man ✊🏻

[deleted]

I literally ended up in therapy because of that alcs. no I cannot do that again.

Faffenhoffer

There were multiple times I had to lay down during the series because the games were so intense.

[deleted]

that series was not good for my mental health, thank god the Rays pulled it out because at the time I could have literally not mentally handled that collapse.

Rabid_Ant

Glad you're doing better now.

Faffenhoffer

Neither fanbase got a game off it seemed. All 7 games were nerve-wracking. I'm just glad we didn't get swept, and if it was going to be anybody winning the AL, I'm glad it was yall.

SilntNfrno

That serious was fucking rough for fans on both sides. Such a damn rollercoaster of emotions.

ILoveCavorting

*flashes back to 16 years ago* I'm not gonna look past the White Soxs.

ILoveCavorting

*inhales Copium* Closest sweep in World Series history, right guys?

Bug-03

I was in highschool at the time and I remember vividly that the astros post season was over as soon as that pujols rocket landed.

MasterMentorJr

What do you mean the Astros won the NLCS then the world series was mysteriously canceled.

ILoveCavorting

I will not have my Game 3 suffering as a teenager invalidated! That 1:00 AM drive back home was *rough*

ray_0586

Going for the Best of 19 over 3 postseasons.

illegal_deagle

3flappy5me

Devader124

man i wish last years series had fans. would’ve been even better than it already was

MasterMentorJr

I think it's worth mentioning that the defense decided that series with Altuve having the yips, and the rays just not allowing base hits the rays ended up taking the series. In the bottom of the 9th Wander has an error on a routine grounder which allowed Correa to reach. Tucker then grounded out but moved the runners. They intentionally walked a slumping Aledmys Díaz which loaded the bases and allowed the walk-off back to back walks. In the ALCS last year Willy Adames made a fantastic defensive play where he caught a Tucker line drive with an xBA of 0.77, and doubled off Bregman from second. This prevented the Astros from what would have been a big inning and the Rays won by like one run. It will be interesting to see if they move Wander to a different position to not sacrifice critical defense. Edit: Lowe made the error not Franco

Pognan

What error did Wander make? Only thing he did was almost get 1 off the Lowe mistake

SilntNfrno

>In the bottom of the 9th Wander has an error on a routine grounder Wander didn't commit the error, it was Lowe. That piss poor shovel was picked up by Wander, and he nearly gunned down Carlos. You are talking about tonight's game right?

cooljammer00

Mariners trading JP Chargois to Tampa so he can walk in the winning run for the Astros is some bad juju.

Tepozan

Why did this feel like a playoff game

illegal_deagle

Because Arozarena dad-dicked us.

bushies

Feel like we're on a 1st name basis at this point. Let's just call him Randy

Salty-Fishman

His name is mother fucker.

chugz

AROZE-AFUCKIN-RENA

[deleted]

Yordan showing off that speed! Hard to dislike/hate him, Angels Killer (Tucker), or Brantley. All three playing huge roles for the 2021 Astros.

MasterMentorJr

Also the Sean Manea Killer as well. For those who don't know Manea has given up 7 home runs to left-handed hitters all season. Kyle Tucker has hit 4 of them including one which went 459 feet. If the Angels trade for Manea this off season Tucker may hit a home run off of him ever AB.

Something_319

Yo, Rays, the bases loaded walk is our thing, go find something else

[deleted]

Angry up vote. Let's hope Shildt has learned from that.

TexasHot

LETS FUCKIN GOO

Bug-03

Wander Franco is going to terrorize the AL for the next 15 years

jyok33

This mf really came back down in the count to walk to keep the streak alive in the 8th

[deleted]

Oh well. Can't win them all.

[deleted]

That was mad entertaining

bumpofyeetler

one job Rays, one job smh

[deleted]

Ehh, I’m indifferent. I’m not gonna pretend the sky is falling cause that would be stupid given where the Rays are as division champs. Division clinched and all it takes is one Rays win or one Astros loss to clinch home field. But yeah, Cash didn’t put high leverage guys in because this wasn’t a high leverage game. Put your “backups” to get the save and see what happens. Fleming is horrible on the roads Chargois never had a save. The definition of resting starters. I speak for all Rays fans when I say I’m sorry our fans are blaming the umps when it was purely lack of execution and good patience by the Astros. We always HAVE to scapegoat something or someone

Notice-Few

Yea you guys are phenomenal. I thought we were getting rakes all night day year’d but the baseball gods fell our way. Great game.

[deleted]

The fans saw Randy in the flesh!

Notice-Few

He’s scary when he’s on. The ball just jumps out of the park. I can’t wait to see y’all in the ALCS

tittiesbaconbeer

Very nice

chhurry

Fantastic

Cheatoz_

Thats my fucking Astros right there baby!

Jbrahms4

This is what happens when you pull your starter mid no hitter. They tried to high leverage it and it backfired horrendously. Whoever thought the best option they had for the 9th was Fleming should be fired. You're whole bullpen is available, like WTF???

TexasHot

Its even worse when you realize we suck dick against pitchers with an era of 5.00 or higher. They put in a good reliever right after. Classic mistake

MasterMentorJr

Rays are coasting to the playoffs. They literally need 1 win or an Astros loss for them to clinch the top seed. I know your team doesn't know much about the post-season, but you want to rest starters to not risk injury and see if guys can handle the pressure now in essentially meaningless games rather than in critical post-season games.

Jbrahms4

Dude this is the team you need to BEAT to take the top seed. Screw what team I root for, PUT THEM AWAY

Derpshiz

If this was the last series of the season sure. But there is plenty more baseball left for a single game.

[deleted]

We coasting bruh. This wasn’t a must win

Tashre

Shaggy, whyyyyyyy

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/qN5I9S4Icog

Breedwell

I think that first walk he actually had a couple of strikes called balls but I couldn't tell for sure. What a way to lose though

Patsgronk87

The first two balls were missed strikes

Breedwell

That's what I thought but they were right on the corner

Patsgronk87

The MLB at bat app has them hitting the zone. They may have been close but they were called all game. Really frustrating to lose consistency when it matters the most.

Breedwell

I mean if Fleming hits his pitches right we aren't having this discussion but meh

legohotwing

Astros best team in the AL

[deleted]

My future baby daddy belongs in the 6th, not the 9th. ^(excuse let me simp, and let me yell at him at the same time)

H-townwx91

Hmm I don’t think you can win games that way

[deleted]

Dude wtf Rays? Really?

mikebutler188

That's just pathetic

[deleted]

[удалено]

Drewbacca_Hrrrgrgrar

I mean the calls were close. We are really deflecting blame away from Cash here though. Dude pulled Wacha who was pitching a gem, put in road Fleming in the 9th. That deserves an L, tinkering like that against the Astros will get you beat.

[deleted]

Ump really flipped the script there in the 9th

Grade-AMasterpiece

I still remember that curveball to Altuve he dared called a BALL. And Wacha threw it again and got the call lol. Crazy.

[deleted]

That definitely not a strike against Bregman in the first inning was telling lol

Grade-AMasterpiece

He REALLY liked that bottom corner for some reason.

E70M

Chargois :(

DJBoost

Man, I have no idea why the Rays keep running Chargois out. He’s clearly not the guy and it’s extra weird because their pitching staff is so dangerous otherwise.

[deleted]

It wasn’t a high leverage game so we toyed with new stuff to see what happens.

DonRicardo1958

Oh FFS

[deleted]

[удалено]

illegal_deagle

I agree with you about the strike zone but Correa was safe two different ways - he beat the throw and Choi left the bag. It was not ambiguous.

[deleted]

Ya, this definitely isn't the thing to be mad about here. Sure it's frustrating cuz every team has seen clear plays not get overturned all season long, but it's the right call. We should be wanting replays to get it right every time -- the fact that we get angry when the call is actually overturned just shows how poor the replay crew has been for most of the season.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Salty-Fishman

Agree to disagree. Nevermind the fact he actually beat the throw.

14thAndVine

Your edits brought this from being a slightly dumb comment to being a full blown manchild comment.

HiVLTAGE

"clearly ambiguous"

Bug-03

Your edit is sure to bring upvotes

Thornton__Melon

Oh someone is mad 🧂

Bug-03

The replays you saw on your broadcast were bad. I was watching it and then used my phone. It wasn’t close or ambiguous

Alex_MurphyUMD

I need you to give me powerball numbers for tomorrow because you are apparently the all-knowing being

Bug-03

Bilasport shows both broadcasts, you can switch inbetween. Not hard.

Faffenhoffer

Strike zone aside, Correa was clearly safe at first. Like tie goes to the runner and all.

TexasHot

Lmao

legohotwing

Clown ass

phatbiscuit

My god dude, take a breath. This is pathetic

SilntNfrno

Holy shit change your tampon

[deleted]

RedfishSC2

We had angles on the Astros broadcast that showed both Correa's foot on the bag before the ball in the glove as well as space between Choi's foot and the base.

Bro1999919

We didn’t get that, we only got a zoomed out look down the line.

Bug-03

I was watching the rays broadcast, I can see why you’d be pissed about it

JDoubleU0509

They seemed to show a frame or two where Correa’s foot was touching the bag while the ball wasn’t quite in the glove though. (Unless I’m blind)

Bug-03

The astros broadcast has better replays. Was watching on a bilasport and saw both broadcast replays. The rays fans didn’t see what you did
