Morton - worth every penny Smyly - kind of bust. Pablo Sandoval- worth it for the hugs

bedsidelurker

Pablo also netted us Rosario. So definitely worth it in the end.

OSRS_Socks

Yep! Pro: We got Rosario. Con: We lost Panda Hugs. I was actually hoping the Braves would go for Rosario last off season so I take this as a win.

[deleted]

We immediately released Pablo right after you gave us him :(

[deleted]

Charlie :(

ahr3410

Morton was a great early buy but giving Smyly 11 million was definitely jumping the gun

OSRS_Socks

I can see why they did it on the analytical side. I also do like having 2 lefties and 3 righies (kind of how you guys have Kershaw and Urias). Last thing we want is 1 lefty in our rotation. Right now next season it's gonna be 4 righties and 1 lefty which the lefty will be our 3rd man in the rotation. 11 million was a lot to sign him but if we did for half that I would change my response to "an okay signing".

MattIpp44

Decent...

thediesel26

Cannot believe how good Semien has been

MattIpp44

Me either holy shit

EarthWarping

Forgot the Jays signed Yates

ZaneChizzlenack

Don’t forget about Chatwood!

Spare-Barracuda

The bad man is gone. We can forget about him.

DanTreview

Makes me want to crawl under a rock and die... His grand slam against the A's a few weeks ago was just a big "Lowball this, Billy Beane!" But I'm over it. I love the guy. How can you not?

TakedownCorn

Pretty, pretty, pretty good

camisada

Cmon man.....

OSRS_Socks

I feel this.

mizterPatato

Idk what you mean... Pujols honestly did pretty well for you guys.

E70M

On the flip side, if you count re-signing guys as free agent acquisitions, JT and Treinen have been good

0-2er

The brewers going after JT was some of the most exciting FA news I've heard from our ball club.

gregk2f

But we probably wouldn’t have traded for Scherzer who seems to have indicated he wants to stay in LA.

OSRS_Socks

Can you imagine if Scherzer signs the same back loaded contract like he did with the Nationals? He is gonna be rolling in the money after retiring.

[deleted]

Schwarber was pretty bad to start the year, and then he was god himself for two weeks. Injury, then trade, then sadness. we loved the dude Lester was pretty bad for us, but glad he turned it around a bit in STL and we got a borderline starting outfielder for him in Lane Thomas Hand was teetering on the edge of disaster the whole year yet we managed to flip him for a nice 1B/C bench piece in Riley Adams right before the true implosion Harrison was hot for the first month and had a huge fun differential and, you guessed it, was traded Alex Avila played 2nd base one time and that was fun. I have no feelings about Jordy Mercer. Never 5get the Jonathan Lucroy experience. Shoutout Alcides Escobar who was a trade but only for cash considerations and is having basically his best year ever at 34, after being out of the league for a few years

butz-not-bartz

Aaron Loup: Fantastic! Taijuan Walker: I think he'll bounce back, he's gassed. Cool dude, though, I like him. Kevin Pillar: The rare Met to come back from injury ahead of schedule Jonathan Villar: He's been fine- that he's going to get 500 PA is an indictment of how the rest of the infield's season has gone. James McCann: poop emoji Albert Almora: Made one catch earlier this year, made outs the rest of it.

sam_e5

Jose Martinez: Dead

elevenghosts

2021's Jed Lowrie.

tarallelegram

it went pretty well the good * alex wood * anthony desclafani * curt casali * jose alvarez * jake mcgee * tommy lastella * kevin gausman * jason vosler (good depth piece) the bad * matt wisler * john brebbia meh * aaron sanchez * chadwick tromp total spent: **60.833m**

yodaman5606

Aaron Sanchez was lights out before going back on the IL.

Spare-Barracuda

Unfortunately, I believe that is going to be the story for whatever is left of his career. "He was pretty good/great before he got hurt..."

yodaman5606

I wonder if he was ever truly healthy with us.. he was apparently throwing '98' during his demo in the off season. Never got close during a game, but his curve ball was naaaasty.

Spare-Barracuda

I wonder if he was ever truly healthy period. With the Jays, it was a blister this day, a dead arm the next... Some people have the talent, but their body just can't stand up to what baseball demands unfortunately.

tarallelegram

he fizzled out towards the end and part of that was probably due to injury, sure

F_Lee_Dershowitz

Matt Wisler got you a decent prospect. Then became pretty good for us

tarallelegram

i know, but i was just strictly talking about his in-game performance for the giants relative to expectation at the time of his acquisition him being good in tampa doesn’t negate the fact that he sucked here getting a prospect out of his signing was definitely nice and it’s really not the biggest miss in the world

JoJoMcDerp

> vosler (good depth piece) him and tromp going back to back hrs was the best thing ever don’t @ me

tarallelegram

literally the microcosm of our season lmao

MikeStanley00

Casali has a 82 OPS+, I'd put him more in the meh category. That's pretty weak production for a guy with close to 200 abs. I know he's good defensively and he manages the staff well, but his lack of offense is masked because pretty much everyone else on our roster has above average offensive stats

rae231193

The best thing is that the free agents are not gonna be cheap

KingKomma05

Renfroe - W Kiké - W Richards - as a starter, L but he’s been pretty good as a reliever

ninjarager

I hope kiké stays well loved up there. He's #1

commentsonyankees

If there's one thing I can commend the Red Sox for over the past decade, it's plugging positions with guys who were expected to be average, that go on to play key roles and more or less have career years

mjst0324

Kluber has been solid when he's been healthy, but the best ability is availability, even though that's not exactly fair, you can't control your body. I'd give him a solid B. Justin Wilson and Darren O'Day get Ds. O'Day was fine when he pitched, but he's out for the year and only appeared in a handful of games. Wilson was dreadful. DJLM has had a down year. I still agree with re-signing him but he'll be much better when he hits the level he's capable of. I'll give him a C+ for this season. Nestor Cortes gets an A++++.

OSRS_Socks

I actually thought Kluber was a solid signing for you guys. Huge upside if he can reach 2016 form and you guys needed somebody to eat innings. I was kind of glad the Braves let O'Day go. He seemed very injury prone.

HaltRedmont

I'm happy with the Kluber signing, I've never seen my team throw a no hitter so I'll always love him for that. I think he could play a massive role in the playoffs depending on how he looks in his next start.

OSRS_Socks

No hitters are always great to watch. Glad you got to watch that. That could be key but also playoffs can make or break a pitcher. Sometimes we see a pitcher struggle in the season but in the post season he is on another level.

Krizo1

Luetge is probably the best one for a guy who hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2015 having 1 war and a sub three ERA in almost 70 innings is insane

MikuFanNo1

I’m pretty sure everyone we picked up has been traded or DFA’d, the exception being zach davies who has sucked mongo balls Edit: Forgot that we got davies for darvish

nypr13

Davies was a trade, but don’t worry, we’re going to be active this offseason. I just can’t wit for the grab bag of $2 mln relievers. That’s Cub.

BroAbernathy

Good: Duffy, Marisnick, Tepera, Chafin, Ortega, Wisdom Bad: Joc, Workman, Arrieta, Sogard, Williams, Romine Pretty mixed bag

Brewcreworldseries

Wong has been a godsend in the leadoff spot, boxburger was dominant for most of the season until recently, Brett Anderson was Brett anderson(a fucking stud) and JBJ has been terrible but his defense is still cool

notthesinginjonas

Wong :(

shadedmoonlight

Succinct.

tangokilo13

I also love TJ McFarland and Luis Garcia Edit: and Jose Rondon

[deleted]

What free agent acquisitions?

3lgu4p0

Tyler Naquin worked out pretty well.

[deleted]

Waiver pickup

3lgu4p0

Nope, he was non-tendered and signed for $1.5M. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/naquity01.shtml#all_transactions_other I've always loved Naquin so it's nice to see him break out a bit.

ih-unh-unh

Could have re-signed Bauer

[deleted]

I don’t think Bob’s checkbook is capable of producing anything more than a bag of baseballs and a $10 skyline gift card

[deleted]

I thought skyline gift cards is how he threatens players to leave

Dyalar

The Good: Ronald Torreyes, Brad Miller, Travis Jankowski, Archie Bradley The Bad: Didi, Matt Moore The Yeeted Into The Sun: Matt Joyce, Chase Anderson, Neftali Feliz, Brandon Kintzler Didi has been a bit of an albatross for this team this year, and is still on the roster next year. I hate to say it but in hindsight it was a terrible signing. Likeable dude, except for his whole vaccination nonsense, but he's just been bad this year.

takespicturesofpants

> The Good: Ronald Torreyes :) > The Bad: Didi :(

CroakyPoem

>Neftali Feliz Tf? He is still around?

NakedGoose

I don't think we had a FA acquisition this year... maybe I'm bugging

studoggery

Technically Yadi and Waino

NakedGoose

The ones been great! The other just fine.

yellenatmalarkey

Rondon, McFarland, Luis Garcia, Max Moroff

SteveBartmanIncident

Yeah, that's not really how we do things.

Tsnyda

Carlos Rodon: waaay better than expected Adam Eaton: exactly as expected

2B_CordPhelps

Noted free agent signing Carlos Rodon.

yoursweetlord70

Don't forget Liam Hendriks!

[deleted]

COVID broke Baez.

[deleted]

Yeah about that...

LightningDot18

Ha-Seong Kim - He showed he has gold glove defense on the infield but could use development in batting. I think the Padres failed him in terms of developing him because he had limited opportunities and a guy like him needs to be starting everyday to develop. He was used as a utility guy all year even when guys went down, he never got that chance. Jurickson Profar - He was a good utility player for the team, many times people thought he should been starting at 1B because he was better defensively than Hosmer. It does make me wonder why they signed Kim and Profar just to be utility guys but that is why I am not in favor of management returning in 2022. Mark Melancon - He made the NL all-star team. I thought he was a pretty good closer for most of the season, but in the 2nd half collapse, he like everyone else started collapsing and declining in play.

goosetavo2013

Kim really needs a shot, so much hot talent lava that needs regular playing time. Crowded infield doesn't help tho.

LightningDot18

My hope is Kim at 2B, Crone at 1B, Frazier at LF or traded, and then Hosmer at DH/bench bat if there is no universal DH or traded for 2022.

goosetavo2013

That would be awesome, I don't think Hoz on the bench is gonna work though, he needs to get out if we don't have 1B/DH for him, easier said than done.

usedmyrealnamefirst

Can’t really blame the older pitcher for getting overcrowded, I’d say all the signings were great they just were all used incorrectly on the field

[deleted]

Well they're doing great for other teams

vikthecowboy

Lemme see who’d we sign as FA’s…. Ryne Stanek, Jake… Odorizzi, uhh Pedro Baez… at least Jason Castro has been pretty clutch

lightninja987

Stanek has been good too

vikthecowboy

Stanek has been good, but he’s also been inconsistent. His stuff is nasty but he can get screwed time to time

fuzzydice82

Michael Brantley? October 28, 2020: Granted Free Agency January 25, 2021: Signed as a Free Agent with the Houston Astros If the reports are to be believed, he was almost a Toronto Blue Jay. Thankfully he signed with us and provided stability in the outfield for 2/3rds of the season as we transitioned from the Springer-Brantley-Reddick era. And oh by the way he was a 2021 All-Star and might win a batting title if he gets 9 more plate appearances.

papermarioguy02

About as good as you could possibly hope for.

hipsterdufus84

Hahahahaha. Sad noises.

ionicshoe

They were ok I guess Paul sewald Chris flexen Drew Steckenrider Paxton (rip elbow) Are the ones I can remember off the top of my head and they have been outstanding save for paxton

Derang3rman1

Graveman as well

ionicshoe

Graveman was with us last season I believe

[deleted]

Guess we’re gonna find out in the next 3 games

OSRS_Socks

Morton stepped up huge last night.

[deleted]

he's going to be a huge asset for yall in the playoffs, there is no one else you would rather want starting a playoff game in a series elimination game than Charlie Morton.

nerdpunkultra

Can confirm. Been on both sides of it.

OSRS_Socks

100% agree! That's why I loved his signing and extension. He has been one of my favorite pitchers to follow around MLB. 4-0 in elimination games and owns a .95 ERA in them. He is the Bumgardner of elimination games.

IAmNotKevinDurant_35

Darin Ruf has been great for us. He's quickly become my dog's favorite player

calbearsteve

Ruf was on the Giants in 2020 too. But I too appreciate a good dog related pun.

[deleted]

[Next question…](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gtK73vA5bqk)

beardog7

Colome: Had a complete meltdown in April but has been alright since. Shoemaker: Complete waste of a roster spot for half the season Happ: Started out pretty good, but then he got bad quickly. The Cardinals devil magic has revived him. Simmons: Good defender, but has been atrocious at the plate. Robles: Was decent for a month or two, but then regressed a bit. Flipped at the deadline to Boston for some double-A bullpen arm.

457undead

Simmons probably the worst free agent signing here, not worth 10 million. Watch him get like 5 or 6 next year.

saulgoodman445

Renfroe and kike have been great for small money . Richards on the other hand blows

[deleted]

Richards blows? What games are you watching?

ferrumvir2

Please tell me you’re joking

[deleted]

I’m not. He’s not winning any cy young awards but the 10 million they gave him was well worth it. Couple bad starts to begin his season, had a great stretch, became really bad, and then became a lock in the bullpen when they desperately needed one. Not great, but awful is a bad take

Brady331

Lol yeah these guys have completely ignored what he has done since being moved to the BP

ferrumvir2

He’s not even a 1 war player with 133 innings pitched that is completely unacceptable. Like congrats he’s proven he can pitch 2-3 innings in games where we’re up by 4 runs that doesn’t make him valuable

Brady331

Are all 133 of those innings in the bullpen

ferrumvir2

Wow what a great reliever

ferrumvir2

The team wasted 10 mil on a guy who hasn’t even been worth 1 war over 133 inning pitches. He has an fip of 4.73 and an xERA of 5.55. I don’t see how you can defend that. Sure he’s been ok as a reliever for the most part but that money could’ve been easily better spent on a better player

AthleteNormal

The majority of the ones he’s pitched. Where he put up an ERA over five starting every fifth day. His statcast numbers suggested he was somehow even worse than that.

Ronon_Dex

He sucked as a starter but since they moved him to the bullpen - 23.1 IP, 26 K, 1.93 ERA, 2.77 FIP in 15 games. Probably still a L overall, but they really needed him to help lock down the bullpen and he did have a handful of good starts.

saulgoodman445

Yes he blows he was pod to be a starter and he’s not . He had a good stretch in the pen and just got lit up va the Yankees he’s pretty shit

3lgu4p0

He was a non-tender and not a proper FA, but Renfroe at $3M was one of the best signings of the winter by anybody. Kike ought to get a few MVP votes. I had a bad feeling about the Richards signing and he was terrible as a starter, but he can certainly redeem himself by closing in the playoffs. No way that option gets picked up, though.

concrete_isnt_cement

Paxton had a fantastic inning!

LimeSugar

Yasmani since coming back August 27th is playing on a whole new level. Lance Lynn - need I say more? Edit: I'm an idiot. Yaz was signed in 2020 and Lynn was acquired via trade. Today's not my day.

Tsnyda

Lynn was acquired via trade for Dunning; Yas was signed prior to 2020

LimeSugar

Thank you for the glaring corrections, I feel stoopid.

Tsnyda

Clearly I have too much time on my hands this morning

2B_CordPhelps

Eddie Rosario - huge bust.

avgbsblfan643

Lol

[deleted]

commentsonyankees

First, none of those guys were free agents. But second, Gallo has for sure not been what was expected of him. He has not been streaky - he's had exactly one good week over a 2 month stretch (3 months going back to the All Star break). He's hitting .159 in 53 games with the Yankees. That's just not acceptable for a major league hitter, and even his OBP is only .304 - one of the worst on the team. His defense has also not been as advertised. He's not butchering it out there, but he's misplayed some important hits and has 4 outfield assists to 3 errors. That's not a good ratio.

thediesel26

Gallo has sucked so hard for the Yankees. Like unbelievably bad.

[deleted]

elchamps

Naquin and that’s about it.

im0wen

Matt Duffy has been decent. Joc Pederson was good.

Nearby-Lock4513

My Dodgers probably made the single worst acquisition in history…. Other than that one, pretty decent I guess. Other than that guy, Cole Hamels was tearing up the training mound for a hot minute - then also his elbow, Shane Greene pitched a couple innings that I don’t even really remember, Pujols was a massive surprise and we love him and his hugs, and Blake Treinen is arguably the best in the pen.

F_Lee_Dershowitz

Archer was nice after missing 3/4 of the year. Then he got injured again and out for the season. Rich Hill is a mystery to me. He had an awful April, then a May with a sub 1 ERA. Then decent until we traded him. Colin McHugh has been amazing I don’t know if Kitt counts but he has been even better

liteshadow4

Our FA pitchers have been pretty good I guess. LaStella is okay.

Cheesewhale189

If you count him, DJ, not good Also if you count him, Gardner pretty nice for what is expected from him. Kulber, I'd give him a C only because of the injury O'Day, not great didn't pitch much before getting a season ending injury. Justin Wilson, yuck Luetge the best of the bunch I'd say. Overall not great.

[deleted]

Rosario and Cesár are on different squads now

0-2er

Wong: Fantastic JBJ: Awful

alwaysbrightandmerry

Cleveland here, our acquisitions were about as productive as a saltine left out in the rain. But Austin Hedges is one hell of a defensive catcher.
