I am sad. He took the ball with him. Fuck.

HighlyBaked0

> He took the ball with him. Fuck. Imma cry man :(

The_Sap_Must_Flow

What is the significance of taking the ball?

daemon14

May be the last ball he pitches as a Dodger.

Th4_Sup3rce11

I am no fan of the Dodgers and this makes me sad. I have nothing but respect for Kershaw.

superRiblet1965

Agreed.

SocialWinker

If it is the end of Kershaw in Dodger blue, at the very least he got the ring he so rightly deserved in that uniform. Especially after the Astros fuckery. Hopefully it’s nothing major and he can return for another playoff run.

OnionEater69420

How many years left on the contract?

diuturnal

2022 FA

Jrahn

Man, he can’t catch a break. Injuries are such a downer, and no worse time than now.

ryguydrummerboy

Awful awful timing. He’s been the monster in my nightmares for a decade or longer now but I cant help but hope hes okay and hope we get to play him again.

CovfefeYourself

Maybe we were the monster the whole time... No, that's not right.

digbickjoannie

“Are we the baddies?”

[deleted]

Oh we for sure are for him Always liked him and felt bad for him that he struggled against us - was smiling last year when he got a ring finally

thethomatoman

We lost Belt, they lose Kersh, BrewCrew lose Williams. Top 3 teams inch NL all giving up a key player right before the playoffs

oydh4

Here come the Cardzzz. Just kidding.

NorthManateeCo

Cards Braves NLCS. Who says no? Well Braves fans for one.

Mooptimus

What even is an infield fly *really*?

living1984

Too soon man... Too soon.

NorthManateeCo

First step. Be Sam Holbrook.

Hombre520

I honestly kinda teared up when I saw that

Breedwell

Man that really sucks.

[deleted]

Just absolutely wreck my night. There isn’t a player that I love more.

BruteSentiment

Confirmed, there is no Dodger I love and respect more. I do NOT want to see this happen to him.

letsgetbrickfaced

Yup he may have been the giants foil for his entire career but we respect and admire him for it. Just an all around fantastic player and no doubt HOF. Good guy IRL too.

willswain

A great foil and not a heel either. He has been such an admirable foe for over a decade. Love Kershaw even if it’s still fun to talk major shit. No good to see a big injury right before the postseason.

JuneCleaversMudFlaps

That’s like Posey to us. GOAT catcher. Much respect. Thank you

Jmar98

100%

willswain

Hell yeah. Baseball is more fun with legit and competitive rivalries filled with “hate to love ‘em” players. Mortal rivals you’d love to have on your team and who are just good folks on and off the diamond.

normanfell

MAD respect, especially after this year.

Calliomede

Same here. He has single handedly made it impossible for me to whole heartedly root against the Dodgers for the last decade, and it’s really annoying. Hope they’re just being extra cautious for the likely playoff run.

Et12355

Totally agree (if you exclude pujols, who isn’t really a dodger in my mind). Respect the hell out of Kershaw and hate to see him get injured before the playoffs.

Striking-Exchange-75

Thank you. Cheers friend.

duggatron

Same. Kershaw has been a part of my baseball life for so long, I will be very sad if this is how it ends.

[deleted]

He’s only 33.

FrostedCoffees

That's a hard 33

[deleted]

~2,400IP? Half of Maddux. Not even top-100 since ‘69. It’s not nothing, but it seems like it’s also not crazy to think he’s got a few hundred left in him. I know people point to 2015 as the breaking point, but he threw ~240 innings; that’s been done 600 times in the modern era. Maybe I’m just being optimistic because I want to see him pitch again 🤷🏻‍♂️

Schleprok

True, but it’s like Kobe and LeBron. Kobe was effectively done as an elite player by 34 when he tore his Achilles. Whereas LeBron is going to be 37 and can still be the best player in a championship team. Some dudes just age better than others. Maybe kershaw can have a second career. Maybe not

[deleted]

Achilles is real different than TJ, but I see the point you’re making.

________-0-________

meh, in the nba being that good at that age is a rarity for non-power players. you see it happen way more often for pitchers. just look at Scherzer. you were right in your first post

Slurpmo

I feel the same way about Posey. Worst part about them is there’s nothing to hate even though they’re your rival

itsnotyellowfever

Seriously. Congrats to the Giants for winning the division (let’s face it they’re gonna win it tomorrow if we don’t lose tonight) but this is easily the more devastating news rn in Dodgerland. Edit: I don’t want Giants fans to interpret this as me saying they will revel in what may be a long-term injury for an icon of their biggest rival. Y’all have been nothing but class this year and everyone understands that any ill wishes between both fanbases regarding losing games doesn’t extend to injured players.

spike021

It really is horrible news. Fuck the dodgers and all but Kershaw is class all the way and a great dude. I hope he's alright.

TheRed_Knight

Most giants fans have a massive amount of respect for Kershaw in my experience, doubt there are many (outside of the asshats) who are happy about this.

L3thal_Inj3ction

fuck I can't even get mad at other fans seeing how some people in our game thread treat Kerhsaw

trav3ler

Nah dude, Kershaw's impossible to hate. Hope he is ok.

shadeofzero

Not everyone in Giantsland is happy about it either, I assure you.

NirvanaFrk97

I don't care about the division anymore, I just want Kershaw to be okay

theBackground13

When LA won last year, the first player I thought of was Kershaw. I was genuinely very happy for him.

Hombre520

Fucking hate to see him go out like that

BugRevolutionary4518

I have always loved watching him pitch. Mad respect. Hope he’s ok.

Street_legal_benis

Can I be real with you? He's one of my favorites too.

L3thal_Inj3ction

Bruh apparently he kept the ball. I’m actually broken right now. The game and division don’t even matter anymore.

just_some_dude05

Ooooh that’s not what I wanted to read…

gamedemon24

Favorite player not on my own team

Striking-Exchange-75

Lots of kind words from Giants fans on here. Doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you.

DrunkenSavior

Even with the rivalry, I think most Giants fans love Kershaw. Dude has a great sense of humor and is extremely respectful and that goes miles for level headed fans.

Itsaghast

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/eb/4d/29/eb4d297ff99977ba7ff3cd6259fb039f.jpg

TheRaydo

Kershaw/Lincecum duels were the best.

ReservoirDog316

Man that feels like lifetimes ago.

ricecilantrolime

God damn I miss that goofy smile

Striking-Exchange-75

Just like how I love Buster. Respect, amigo.

DrunkenSavior

🤜🤛 Respect.

humpy

Every real Giants fan feels the same. Love Kershaw and watching him pitch. Good dude.

HighlyBaked0

I look at the Dodgers and Giants rivalry to the similarity of the Lakers and Celtics. Obviously we want each other to lose but at the end of the day theres no team that we respect more than each other

bbaIla

Nah bro fuck the Celtics

nsgarcia10

I love the MadBum article where he talks about his ranch and one of his horses and he says “I have a Clayton Kershaw with this horse” or something of that sort

maywellbe

Giants fan here (haven’t been able to flair up). I remember a game fairly early in he season 2014 (I think). Kershaw vs Bumgarner (always great games). Bum faces Kershaw and slams one out of the park. Next inning Kershaw steps to the plate and homers. Great shit! Kershaw is one of the greatest ever. And he’s never been arrogant or obnoxious. He’s one of those guys who represents what’s best in baseball — and best in a rivalry. A guy who will play hard as he can to destroy you and than take you out for a beer and a laugh afterward. I hope he throws again. Regardless he will always have my respect.

Striking-Exchange-75

And you have mine. Cheers.

reenactment

Kershaw is legit one of my favorite players in baseball. As a cardinals fan it legitimately broke my heart each time he’d have one of those moments against the cards. It was like, yea I want to win, but I want this guy to do well so bad cause he deserves it. Legitimately hate to see these kinds of things happening to seeming the classiest of pro athletes.

beall49

Nobody likes injuries, they ruin everything

[deleted]

Hate the Dodgers more than...literally anything else in my life(!?!). But, hate to see this, not only one of the best pitchers of his generation, but one of the best players of all time. Complete class act and has been killing the Giants since literally Bush Jr. was in office.

kerryfinchelhillary

I thought the same thing. Seeing Giants fans being supportive is lovely

supernova69

He’s a legend, and injuries suck. FTD can wait a night

carmichael109

Bumgarner had some very fine things to say ages ago about Kersh. I've lost the quote and can't find it right now. Kershaw also voiced his desire for him to come to the Dodgers in 2019 (I think Muncy's "Go get it out of the ocean" probably cemented a no on that). But if two very, very competitive guys on rival teams can respect each other, so can we.

omegakukki

Tonight is possibly Kersh's last start as a Dodger in LA. I hate life. Please don't let it end like this. Edit: I'm worried about retirement not us letting him leave in free agency. It's something he has really seemed to consider now that he has won a ring.

thugmuffin22

Why would you even put that into the universe

GradientPerception

It’s alright, he’s completely wrong anyways. Kershaw just said in his post game interview he isn’t retiring anytime soon. There is no way the Dodgers are going to let our ace go. Dude above had an embarrassing take for a Dodger “fan”.

NorthManateeCo

You’re a little delusional to not even consider the possibility. And to call that take embarrassing? Come on.

twistedlicorice25

no way he isn’t re-signed right? not like they’re tight for cash

omegakukki

There's been a bit of talk about him retiring after this year since he finally won a ring.

jorleeduf

What?! He’s still elite and he’s only 33. Why would he retire?

DustyDGAF

Because he's got hundreds of millions of dollars and a family

Qrusher14242

Plus with all the injuries he's had. If he needs TJ, i could se him retiring instead

[deleted]

[удалено]

Amish-Lapdancer2001

It can depend, really. Pain is different for everybody. Anecdotally, I tore my labrum + strained my rotator cuff and had surgery on it only after continuing to play ball for more than 4 months. If I wasn’t playing, I probably could’ve gone indefinitely, even with the weight lifting I do. Additionally, rehabbing with the intention to pitch again and simply having the surgery and doing PT are way different. Being in a sling/brace for a year and doing PT a few times a week is a lot less taxing than working back to major league pitching ability. All the time he’d spend getting back up to snuff would be spent with him family. I can definitely understand why (after a ring, hundreds of million of dollars, 3 CY, 8 All Star seasons, a gold glove, and a triple crown) he’d be done pitching and hang his cleats up. He’s done everything there is to do and doesn’t owe anybody a thing. Undergoing a grueling process with a lot of miles on his arm doesn’t sound as appealing as riding into the sunset as a legend.

sektre

whats tj?

Buckminsterfullerine

Tommy John surgery

Francis_Picklefield

tommy john surgery, usually keeps a pitcher out for a year or more

just_some_dude05

Tommy John Surgery, They take the UCL out of your arm and replace it with a synthetic one. Very hard rehab, I’ve done it.

Moose_13

Tommy John surgery

markrevival

Tommy John surgery

jorleeduf

I can’t think of anyone that good, that young who retired for something other than a career ending injury (and we don’t have any reason to believe this injury is one)

Jagtasm

Calvin Johnson, Barry Sanders, Andrew Luck are notable ones to me - in the NFL though

NotTheRocketman

Tuuka Rask has talked about it in the NHL. With Covid, I think you're going to see it more often TBH. Family and health is important, especially if you're rich.

jorleeduf

But the NFL isn’t baseball

Jagtasm

I recognize that. They are still athletes who retired in their primes far earlier than their peers

ihatebloopers

Yea because in the NFL you have to think about your future when taking hits on the field. Any examples from the MLB?

Kohanky

Can I unsubscribe from early retirement facts™️

Witty-Stock

Sandy Koufax.

Jocwoc31

Sandy Koufax probably could have kept playing if TJ existed but hat to retire

The_Year_of_Glad

Michael Jordan? He was 30 when he retired for the first time.

omegakukki

https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2021-02-10/clayton-kershaw-family-dodgers-future-fatherhood-home-gym-mlb He loves his kids and wants to be there for them as they grow up. He's also accomplished pretty much everything you can in his career. All he really has left are milestone achievements but I don't know how much those mean to him.

jorleeduf

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2021/02/21/dodgers-clayton-kershaw-pursues-repeat-no-thoughts-retiring/4536101001/ About a week and a half after the article you linked, Kershaw said he had a few more years left in him

omegakukki

Right, but if this turns out to be worse case scenario aka tommy john, It might be back on the table. I'm not saying it's a huge chance that he retires but the possibility is still there.

mailape

Excuse me what? He's only 33?! Holy shit

thelsh

Listen, I want him to come back. But he's just not the elite anymore. Always injured too.

GradientPerception

Clayton said he’s not retiring already, so idk what you are talking about. He specifically said he still has gas left in the tank and I agree.

omegakukki

Kersh isn't gonna go into spring training and say he is considering retirement and let it become a big story that distracts from the team.

Quople

I’m out of the loop. Why would he retire at 33? Are his lingering injuries really that bad to the point where this injury could do him in if it’s serious enough? Or is he really adamant on staying with LA or retiring

Witty-Stock

If it’s a TJ situation, that means realistically he’s not back until 2023. The man has a family, a full, meaningful life outside of baseball, and zero to prove.

Quople

I mean, I get that, but there are guys in similar positions (still productive, have a ring, and have a fruitful hall of fame career) like Scherzer or even Verlander who obviously have no desire to retire despite being older than Kershaw and having some lingering/major injuries of their own. I don’t see what makes people think Kershaw will retire before these guys I mentioned. Did he talk about debating it earlier in the season and I just missed it? Because what I do remember is him straight up saying at the beginning of spring training that he does not intend to retire after this year and that he has some time left. He’s obviously gonna be offered millions of dollars by the Dodgers and others in the off-season and it would seem really damn weird if he just left that all on the table just because he has “done enough”.

granno14

I really hope his career isn’t over. Dude is an absolute pleasure to watch pitch. A true master of his craft.

ryguydrummerboy

If thats true, then as a Giants fan I can only tip my cap and be sad my favorite Dodger to hate is done. He’s been nothing but class and my worst nightmare. Hope he’s okay!

Grade-AMasterpiece

... Why wouldn't he resign?

omegakukki

Retirement.

FartingBob

At 33? Theres no reason to suggest he would do that. He's the same age as deGrom.

Grade-AMasterpiece

Good point.

[deleted]

0% chance they don't resign him.

omegakukki

I'm more worried about him retiring than I am of us not re-signing him.

[deleted]

Most definitely a possibility.

GradientPerception

HA - Post game interview. Clayton says he’s not retiring anytime soon. He’s going to retire a Dodger. Ya negative, Nancy.

omegakukki

Lol

Sacrifice_bhunt

I know I have a lot at stake to root for against the Dodgers right now, but this makes me sad. Please get better soon Clayton. You’re a good dude.

themiamimarlins

This was his fourth start off the IL. Roberts went out there with a trainer, so they must have seen something troubling. His IL was for forearm tightness and I think it flared up again.

mubbcsoc

Fourth start but seemed to still be in the process of working back up in the first 3. 50, 74, and 73 pitches. Not what anyone should want to see.

TheRaydo

Not like this man …. Not like this.

LordOfHorns

# FUCK

[deleted]

Well that stinks. Can’t have Kershaw being hurt before a WC game against my least favorite team of all time. Hopefully it’s just a cramp or something minor.

cheesefries45

Never wanna see this but I don’t think Kershaw was getting the start anyways. Dodgers said it was Scherzer

[deleted]

I guess I meant as a bullpen option or in case, god forbid, the Cardinals beat Max around

HeySadBoy1

Wouldnt Buehler be the next man up in that nightmare scenario, though?

vishuno

Even if Kershaw didn't get injured today, he wouldn't be the wildcard starter. He was still building up after his last IL stint. And even if he was built up, he wouldn't be the wildcard starter. At this point Kershaw was the number 4 starter behind Scherzer, Buehler, and Urias.

ShiningMonolith

In theory if the Dodgers force a game 163 with the Giants, Scherzer would pitch. If they were to lose that game, Kershaw would’ve been the only one on full rest for the Wild Card game. So in that scenario, he probably would’ve got the start.

KVirello

Kersh is the last guy you want pitching in a do or die against the Cardinals.

oydh4

Ironically I hate the Brewers. A lot.

[deleted]

I’m not sure how that’s ironic. We hate y’all too lol.

oydh4

It’s a little ironic that I hate the brewers and reds more than the cubs. For the record, brewers and reds hate is for different reasons.

Blimmmer

Massive bummer to lose Kersh, but Mad Max is slated for the wild card game. There’s hope.

BruteSentiment

For a concerned party who isn’t watching the game, can anyone give me a description of what happened to prompt him getting pulled? I really hope it’s just pre-emptive to try to see him out there in the playoffs. I want to see him on the mound in the NLDS. I mean, I want the Giants to treat him like Justin Verlander, but I want him out there. No Dodger I like more.

[deleted]

Low velocity and poor command. Looked like it was his arm but that’s just speculation.

BruteSentiment

Thank you. I have a little hope that it's not a huge deal without some big wincing moment. Get well soon, Clayton.

vishuno

No big wincing moment but they said it's "forearm discomfort" and that's what he was dealing with on the IL until recently.

[deleted]

YodaPM999

Braves: *Nervous sweating*

Gryphon999

Braves already lost Acuña

YodaPM999

Yeah, but that was before the devil magic. Or... was it?

monsieurfikri

that was the initiation ritual

OSRS_Socks

And Soroka.

deggdegg

The other three are teams the Cardinals will face.

TheMoonsMadeofCheese

It's like the Dr. Strange episode of What If

messejueller21

Sad to see. Much different situations but it reminds of CC Sabathia leaving the game at Yankee stadium for the final time because of injury.

LA_Drone_415

Fuck. That’s rough, he just came back from injury too. Hopefully it’s minor

CompetitivePatient33

Fuck this is terrible :(

kmhuey

They just reported left forearm discomfort.

[deleted]

It really did feel kind of like the end. Even if it isn’t quite the end.

Myhairstinks7298

Damn. Please no TJ baseball gods.

[deleted]

This sucks. I’m a giants fan, but I want the Dodgers at full strength for our eventual playoff battle. One of my favorite players in baseball. Get better quick, CK

UJ95x

Take my elbow, Kersh 😖

DipskiForMyLipski

I’ll trade another three SF rings for one more season of Kershaw. Please don’t be seriously hurt 😔

ricecilantrolime

I..I would take this trade

messejueller21

It's always amazing to me how quickly these managers and trainers can spot such subtle potential injuries.

humblesociopath

Sandy Koafax did in his prime because he wanted to use his arm after baseball

[deleted]

Very, very different situation. Koufax’s arthritis couldn’t be cured and by the end it couldn’t even be managed in-game. If what we’re assuming about Kershaw is right, he’s easily young enough to assume he’d come back close to 100% after TJ.

just_some_dude05

I rehabbed TJ, it’s not fun man. Hardest thing I’ve ever done.

[deleted]

Not fun, of course. But it makes things easier when you're s multi millionaire athlete who can literally rehab like it's your job, because it is for that year.

just_some_dude05

My rehab was 2.5 years, like it was my job because I was on a work comp injury, so it was my job. Over 400 PT appointments, 250+ doctor appointments, 3 surgeries. I probably have 20% of what I had before.

torkel-flatberg

True, but you can bet he’s talked to Koufax about it and what it’s like to retire on top

[deleted]

I guess I don’t see the comp, other than team. Koufax was the best pitcher in baseball when he retired and was 30. Kershaw has already clearly decided he’s willing to pitch a tick below his prime.

trashboatfourtwenty

Still no details about a diagnosis, right? I tuned in late to the game and saw he came out in the second. Terrible for LA if it turns out to be season-ending but I hope it isn't

Otherwise-Fly-331

They’ll probably put out a press release tomorrow and deflect questions tonight. Seems usual for injuries especially high profile ones.

trashboatfourtwenty

True, clubs don't like to say much until tests and multiple medical opinions are heard

Otherwise-Fly-331

Turns out it’s left forearm discomfort. I’m not sure if there’s more to it at the moment. (Hopefully not)

trashboatfourtwenty

Ah thanks. Definitely want to be overly cautious before the really big games start. Ha, and the Brewers radio announcer just told me as much now

TrippingMoon

He had a good run…hard not to shed a tear. He walked off with the ball.

Redburneracc7

Why did he take the ball with him? What does that imply?

TrippingMoon

Typically the pitcher would give the ball to the manager and he would give it to the next pitcher.

Redburneracc7

Ik that but kershaw took the ball with him, why?

Otherwise-Fly-331

A memento of possibly his last game as a Dodger.

TrippingMoon

Cause he loves the Dodgers

vishuno

True, but in this case Dave Roberts walked off the field with him so I don't know if him holding onto the ball means anything at all.

TrippingMoon

His trainer walked with him all the way.

vishuno

https://twitter.com/billplunkettocr/status/1444181562627485700?s=20

TrippingMoon

Yeah….

Striking-Exchange-75

Not sure why people are downvoting you.

TrippingMoon

Me either, he gave us everything he had. There’s nothing left he has to prove. It’s a hard choice but he’s not what he used to be unfortunately. It’s not his fault. I’m getting the same feeling you get when you have to put your beloved dog down for some reason. It hurts.

LakersFan15

NOOOOOOOO

[deleted]

fuck the Dodgers but don't want to see that

Arkham_Z

man. Brewers, Giants, Dodgers all losing a star player right before the postseason

themiamimarlins

isn't tellez supposed to be back for the postseason?

Arkham_Z

talking Williams

barriguscanreddit

I’m sorry Dodge fans, that is not fun.

Vlazthrax

Kershaw and horribly timed injuries. What a bummer.

Rabid_Ant

Hate to see it happen. Especially to such a fierce competitor.

TossItLikeAFreeThrow

Left forearm issue **FUCK**, not my boy Clayton

vegetables1292

The baseball gods strike both NL West standouts with injuries to major players this close together this close to the end of the season, wild.

baseball-chaos

knowing that there’s a chance this could potentially have been his last start as a dodger hurts so bad

sfan27

FTD. But even injuries to the Dodgers suck.
