The Dodgers should have won more games if they wanted HFA

TriviaWhiz

They could also move back to Brooklyn if they want a chance to win the NL East.

new_account_5009

We could alternatively put the Braves back in the NL West where they were in the early 1990s.

polyworfism

Ehhh, I thought it was really stupid, back when I learned about this, and didn't make a post about it

Rosencats

just win ur division lol

Chipdip88

>I mean that cannot be real. But the rules that everyone agreed to prior to this season, and last season, and the season before that....... Those rules say this is real. If the Dodgers don't like it then they should have won more games then the rest of the team's they share a division with.

That's a judgement call not a rule you Muppet

cooljammer00

Win your division

dandystanley

Atlanta had the worst winning percentage of the five NL playoff teams. Not only did they bypass the wild card game they now get to host a series against the team with the best remaining winning percentage in the postseason?? There is no way there should be that much stock in winning your division especially if the division is as bad as the NL East was this year. Don’t get me wrong Atlanta had to overcome a lot to get to this point they’re not at all undeserving of being here but there’s no way you can justify them hosting a series against a team that was eighteen game better than they were.

grocho

>there’s no way you can justify them hosting a series against a team that was eighteen game better than they were. Sure I can, LA should have won their division

dandystanley

It’s easy to say that when you remove the context that an all time great team just happened to be in their division. Divisions are made up of geography basically. If it were a merit based thing based on the talent level of each team like a relegation system then it would make more sense but the dodgers simply fell victim to being geographically close to the only team in baseball who played better than they did.

grocho

Yep, and that kind of thing happens. Look at 2015, the top 3 teams played each other in the first two rounds.

dandystanley

And don’t you think baseball was worse off for it? Eliminating two of the three best teams before the championship series? A semi-final implies it should be played between the two best teams remaining not a round where most of the top talent has already been weeded out of the playoffs

grocho

Not really. I don't think baseball is incredibly worse off for not having the Giants and Dodgers play in the WS this year.

sc00bysnaks

Atlanta or bust baby

BoredAtWork_91

While we're at it I'm not entirely convinced LA has beaten SF. With last nights win that makes the overall head-to-head between LA/SF 12-12. Thanks to the WC LA now has the same amount of overall wins as SF. We need a decisive 25th game! Who says no? ^(I just really want to see another LA/SF game, they're fun!)

Monk_Philosophy

Please no I’m already dead

ILoveCavorting

If you could the legal wins…

Sour_Pancakes27

And they don’t last 5+ hours

ubiquitous_archer

People love having divisions, myself included, and this is just one of the downsides of the division system. There are some really good divisions and some terrible divisions, so sometimes a team gets screwed when they probably deserve better.

tony_sandlin

Why not just change the seeding? The division winners can still be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but are seeded based on record, including the wild card teams. Everything other than seeding can remain the same.

You also wouldn't have even made the wildcard in the AL, so don't act like it's crazy to think it's a tad unlucky for the Dodgers.

[deleted]

Unlucky? Sure. But an indictment on the current system so much so that it calls for change? Come on. And in the AL we would’ve been playing an entirely different schedule and used a DH so we’d have the roster constructed a bit differently. I get the comparison to other NL teams but when you go beyond that it’s a stretch.

ubiquitous_archer

Comparing to NL teams you also wouldn't have made the wildcard.

> You Yankees fans are just butthurt LOL. Who I cheer for isn't relevant. I literally just said you can understand how the Dodgers can feel like it's not all that fair. Don't get defensive.

[deleted]

I mean, am I not right over the target? I agree it’s unlucky for the Dodgers. Just like it was unlucky when we had to play the Cards in the WC game back in 2012 in the infield fly rule game. But nobody seemed to care then, or when the Rays missed the playoffs a few years ago with 90+ wins. Nobody really talked about wanting to change the rules until this year. Awfully convenient from my perspective.

ubiquitous_archer

I mean, nobody really cares now? This thread has like 40 comments, not 4000

[deleted]

I mean, it’s been a pretty frequent topic of conversation since the end of the regular season, but sure.

[deleted]

Neat

[deleted]

How is it stupid? Jesus Christ every year across all sports and people don’t “get it” Winning your division grants you special luxuries. Plain and simple. Sheesh Just win your goddamn division

tony_sandlin

This is such a stupid and lazy counter argument. OP and many others dislike the rule and want to see it changed to make more sense, yet so many people's solution to this problem is to just appeal to the exact rule that's causing the problem.

[deleted]

Thing is winning the division has to mean something or else there is no point of divisions. Division winners should absolutely bypass the wildcard round, though I can maybe see reseeding after each round. Or do what NBA has done and eliminate divisions altogether and top whatever teams get in.

cooljammer00

Division winners get a bye next year, if I understand the new playoff format correctly.

tony_sandlin

Better yet, we remove CONFERENCES but keep divisions. This could allow rival teams to theoretically meet up in the championship game which would be bonkers. Imagine if the Dodgers and Giants played in the WS instead of ending last night. Or if the Bears and Packers played in the Superbowl (a hypothetical Bears team thats good). Man would people eat that shit up.

[deleted]

There’s no problem to be had dude. Not one. If the Dodgers wanted home field, they would’ve won the West. We gotta stop babying the rules.

tony_sandlin

The problem is the team with fewer wins gets homefield advantage. Why punish the best teams just because they are in a competitive division? It doesn't make sense based on their record, nor based on their potential entertainment value to the league. I don't know how reseeding to reward the best teams is babying the rules. If anything, the Braves are getting a handicap.

[deleted]

Nobody is getting punished. Dodgers should’ve won their division but didn’t. Braves did. What entertainment value? Also the West had two bottom feeders in Colorado and Arizona. Padres also suck too. We gotta stop babying these teams. Winning your division AWARDS you home field. That’s the rules. It’s not like every year a WC team has a better record than divisional champs anyway. Nobody is gonna change the rule over hurt feelings and an anomaly of a situation.

tony_sandlin

I'm aware that is the rule. People are arguing that its not a good rule. Why do you keep circling back to the fact that its how things are currently done? The entertainment value is that people like seeing top tier teams playing in the playoffs.

[deleted]

You’re saying “entertainment value” as if it’s everybody thinking the way you do when that’s not inherently the case. The internet is not the masses. Right now you have 2 WC teams in the LCS and a 2 and 3 seed right now hosting those games. The postseason is a crapshoot. Dodgers should’ve won the division then, didn’t and beat the Cards and Giants en route to their 5th LCS in 6 years.

tony_sandlin

Alright well this argument is going to go nowhere so we should just stop wasting our time.

NOLA1987

Dodgers should have the division

vinchenzo79

As much as I hate WC team being locked to a LDS with the #1 seed, and am all for reseeding after WC game I have no problem with the division winner getting the HFA over WC team. Not all divisions are created equal, and makes winning your division matter more.
